My podcast guest this week is bagpiper, fashion designer, content creator and visual artist Chris D. With over twenty years of bagpiping experience under her belt, this talented bagpiper regularly marches in parades in Westchester and New York City. Every year Chris D and her entire bagpipe band are scheduled to march in multiple Saint Patrick's Day parades including the largest one, which takes place in Manhattan. When March rolls around, their busy season is underway. For the first time in the history of State of the Arts, a bagpiper joins me for a riveting interview in honor of Saint Patrick's Day. Listen to this one-of-a-kind State of the Arts episode to learn about the fascinating life of a professional bagpiper and about the ancient instrument that was birthed in Scotland, but eventually assimilated into the Irish culture (as well as many other cultures).

Becoming a great player is clearly possible, as many pipers achieve it. But it's easy to feel like we're getting stagnant or plateauing in our progress. So could becoming a world-class piper really be simple enough to boil down into 100 words? Absolutely! Here they are: ~~~~~~~~~~ "Every day: listen to masterful bagpipe music, interact with bagpipers better than you, play at least one tune on full bagpipes. ‌ Most days: hone essential fundamentals, in this order of priority: 1. Rhythmic Accuracy 2. Scale Navigation 3. Gracenote Quality 4. Blowing Mechanics/Posture 5. Tuning drones together 6. Maintaining optimal blowing pressure. 7. Tuning drones to chanter 8. Avoiding “Mental Blowing Anomalies” 9. Embellishment 10. “Expression” Technique ‌ Practice as wide an array of tunes as humanly possible. Be wary of routine! Keep practice very short, singularly focused, and objective. Afterwards, play strictly for enjoyment. ‌ Regularly put yourself in new, challenging musical situations. Play for self-expression, never for accolades. ~~~~~~~~~~ This week on Dojo Conversations, Andrew and Jim discuss Andrew's 100-word blueprint for improving at bagpipes. It's at the heart of his personal experience and piping philosophy, and forms the core of Dojo University's approach to teaching (the "Five Phases to Bagpipe Freedom"). So could you adopt this blueprint to become a world-class piper yourself? Tune in to find out...

Synopsis Few of us today really know–or care–very much about the War of Austrian Succession, a conflict that troubled Europe in the 18th century. For music lovers, it’s enough to know that to celebrate the end of that war, George Frideric Handel was commissioned to compose music for a fireworks concert in London’s Green Park, an event that took place on today’s date in the year 1749. Back then there were no such things as microphones and loudspeakers, so Handel’s score called for a huge military band of 24 oboes, 9 horns, 9 trumpets, 3 sets of timpani, 12 bassoons, 2 contrabassoons—and strings. When King George II was told about it, he balked a little at the expense: “Well, at least I hope there won’t be any fiddles,” he commented, and so Handel was informed the strings were definitely off. A public rehearsal was held at the Vauxhall Gardens and a London newspaper reported that 100 musicians performed for an audience of more than 12,000, causing a 3-hour traffic jam of carriages and pedestrians on London Bridge. The official event with fireworks went off with a bang–as well as a few fires breaking out. Episode sponsor is Quince & Co. and my Longaberger home business. Travel with me from the Setesdal Region of Norway, to Scotland, to the U.S. to explore lice in knitting and literature.  Robert Burns' poem "To a Louse" is read by Alan Wood of Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland.  Alan is friend of the charming Louise, host of a podcast I enjoy, The Caithness Craft Collective.  I read Robert Frost's poem "A Considerable Speck" which isn't exactly about a louse, but could be.   I review the books that I consider most important for those interested in Norwegian Sweater knitting.  Of course, there are many out there so I just picked my favorites.  Elizabeth Zimmermann's Knitting Without Tears, Knitting Workshop, or The Opinionated Knitter Sheila McGregor's The Complete Book of Traditional Scandinavian Knitting Norwegian Knitting Designs by Annichen Sibbern Bohn.   For the very enthusiastic knitters and historians, consider Annemor Sundbo's Setesdal Sweaters: The History of The Norwegian Lice Pattern. There is an update on my projects, although the Norwegian sweater has been stalled for the past week.  I finished Baby Slippers from Knitting at Home by Leanne Prouse. They turned out lousy. I started on a new project and picked up a pair of socks that had been in hibernation since the summer. Thanks to everyone who has sent well wishes to my mother who fell last week and broke her arm last week and also to me and the family.  You are wonderful people!  The music is compliments of World Champion Piper, Bruce Gandy, from his CD My Father's Son.  Available at www.brucegandymusic.com.
