We are so happy to share this recording of our live event, Dating Your Character. Your fellow writers came up with wonderful things in the text chat, which you'll hear us read throughout the evening. Prefer to watch? Head to https://manuscriptacademy.com/dating-your-character Writing doesn't have to strictly be a serious, intellectual exercise. You can reap rewards by approaching your work in an experimental frame of mind. Our way of developing an intimacy with your character is through the awkward and always-interesting lens of dating. Introducing Dating Your Character, with producer/literary manager Marilyn R. Atlas and VP of Literary Development Elizabeth Lopez. Having sold several first-time writers' books, Marilyn and Elizabeth believe that screenwriting and prose writing seek to satisfy the same visceral and emotional needs. While they inevitably look at manuscripts with an eye to adaptation, this class is an informal way to bridge both worlds. Using examples from film and TV, they look at character development as the key to binding all the composite parts -- the theme, dilemmas and scenarios leading to all-important transformations. By riffing on the choices that the screenwriter could have been confronted with, they focus on possibility, not inevitability. To reinforce that, they'll offer exercises to reveal the choices open to you in your work. Expect fun, support, laughter, community--and actionable tips to bring your characters to life. Marilyn R. Atlas is a talent and literary manager and award-winning producer. Her clients have appeared in shows such as Star Trek, Fringe, Pretty Little Liars, How to Get Away with Murder, 90210, Revenge, Hart of Dixie, NCIS:LA, True Blood, Dexter, Chuck, Castle, and Criminal Minds. She was film producer on Real Women Have Curves for HBO, which won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival; A Certain Desire, starring Sam Waterston; and Echoes, which won the Gold Award at the Texas International Film Festival. In addition to producing a variety of programming for the cable/ pay TV market. In live theater, Marilyn co-produced the West Coast premiere of the musical God Bless You Mr. Rosewater by Ashman and Menken (the writers of Enchanted and Tangled). She also co-produced the award-winning play “To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday.” Marilyn herself has been in development on pilots for Showtime and ABC Family. In addition to Marilyn's film/TV credits, she has sold (first time) novels Chasing the Jaguar to HarperCollinsto Hachette Book Ave Maria Bed & Breakfast to Grand Central Publishing, and the Hungry Woman in Paris, Group, and the Last Ride of Caleb O'Toole to Sourcebooks Her Lifetime movie The Choking Game based on the YA book by Diana Lopez aired in summer 2014. She is also featured in the book Write Now! from Penguin/Tarcher. She is the co-author of a relationship-based, screenwriting guide called Dating Your Character, about an organic approach to character creation for Stairway Press's Summer 2016 catalog.
Elizabeth Lopez attended Vassar College, majoring in English Literature. She was a screenwriting fellow of the L.A. Latino Film Festival and has had several articles published online and in print for entertainment-oriented magazines such as “Storylink,” “The Script Lab,” and “Gideon's Screenwriting Tips.” She has taught screenwriting classes at the Ojai Writers Festival, The Writers Store, and for the WGA TV Writers' Fund. She and her partner Marilyn R. Atlas, along with producer Devorah Cutler-Rubenstein, co-wrote the character-based guide/workbook “Dating Your Character,” which embraces a more playful approach that focuses on tying plot to inherent and evolved character behavior. In her own words!"I'm a Los Angeles & Atlanta based actress/writer/director/producer/pitbull rescuer/lover of slashes. A California girl born and raised, I attended the University of Southern California (GO TROJANS!!!!) where I graduated Magna Cum Laude (hey, if I can't brag about it, it's no fun at all!!!) with a B.S. in Music Industry and minors in Business, Communications, and Theatre.I've always had a great appreciation for the arts and an intense love of the stage. I'm intrigued by the power art has to move people and connect people. As Tyrion says in Game of Thrones “no one can resist a good story.” I believe in the power of storytelling and have always been driven to be part of the process.Growing up, my eccentric- yet very talented- extended family put on talent shows every summer where we would sing, dance, play instruments, and do full blown productions of plays. In high school I began acting and dancing in school productions and continued to do so while attending USC. After college, I took that long held love of performing and began pursuing a professional career as an actress. In 2013 I began my television career on the long running soap opera “Days of Our Lives” and the hit Showtime series “Dexter." I've filmed national commercials for brands such as Budweiser, Toyota, Gap, Valley View Casino, and many more. As a model, I've been featured in everything from FHM Magazine to charity pin up calendars to major commercial print ads to coffee table books and art galleries across the country and abroad. In 2018, I co-wrote my first half hour dark comedy pilot entitled "Tithes" with my writing partner Eric Williford. Tithes was recently a semi finalist in The Script Lab and Coverfly's Screenwriting Contest. We followed that up by penning the entire first season, a short film, a feature horror film, and another 1 hour drama pilot that was recently a semi finalist at the highly competitive Austin Film Festival. Our latest project, a darkly comedic webseries called DisGraced, was released to the wild during Covid-19 to rave reviews. I'm also a huge animal lover, a proud dog mom to three rescue pitbulls, and part of the Leadership Team for Angel City Pitbulls. I'm also a self proclaimed foodie, which I credit to coming from a long line of fantastic Italian cooks; and an avid lover of traveling.I love being part of the creative process and am so very grateful for the opportunity to do it."Like to have a ASC cinematographer as a mentor?Have you thought of upgrading your cinematography game? About: Today I speak with Hannah Pearl Utt and Jen Tullock, writers of the adorable indie comedy BEFORE YOU KNOW IT, which Hannah also directed. Hannah and Jen star as sisters from a dysfunctional family who discover their birth mother (played by Judith Light) isn't dead, but alive and acting on a popular soap opera. Mandy Patinkin and Alec Baldwin also star. I was excited to talk to Hannah and Jen because they developed their film through the illusive Sundance Filmmaker labs – something I've personally been rejected from numerous times. Luckily, Hannah and Jen share their advice on applying to the labs and the one thing that ended up being a game-changer and helped get them in. Guests: Hannah Pearl Utt is an actress and writer, known for Before You Know It (2019), Disengaged (2016) and Partners (2015). Jen Tullock is an actor and writer best known for the 2019 Sundance comedic drama "Before You Know It," which she co-wrote and stars in alongside collaborator Hannah Pearl Utt, Judith Light, Mandy Patinkin, and Alec Baldwin. The film, formerly titled "Stupid Happy" was a participant in the 2017 Sundance Director and Producer Labs. Their short film "Partners," which they also starred in, premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. In 2016 she co-wrote and starred in the Turner/Super Deluxe series "Disengaged," created with and directed by Utt. She was featured in the NBC Diversity Showcase and is the award-winning narrator of several New York Times best-selling audio books, as well as the voice of the title character in Emmy award winning short Henry. Host: Shanee Edwards graduated from UCLA Film School with an MFA in Screenwriting and is currently the film critic for SheKnows.com. She recently won the Next MacGyver television writing competition to create a TV show about a female engineer. Her pilot, Ada and the Machine, is currently in development with America Ferrera's Take Fountain Productions. About: Set deep in the wilds of Appalachia, where believers handle death-dealing snakes to prove themselves before God, THEM THAT FOLLOW tells the story of a pastor (Walton Goggins) who digs deeper into his faith when he discovers his teenage daughter Mara (Alice Englert) holds a secret that threatens to tear their fragile community apart. Written and directed by first-timers Britt Poulton and Dan Madison Savage, this film is a modern-day telling of Adam and Eve, with all the temptation and snakes of the archetypal story. Olivia Colman (THE FAVOURITE) plays Hope and packs an emotional punch that makes it one of the best performances of the year. In the podcast, Poulton and Savage talk about the challenges of getting the film made and why writers really don't need to go to film school. Guests: Britt Poulton is a writer and director. After studying International Relations at UC Berkeley, she left politics to pursue film and completed her MFA at USC's School of Cinematic Arts. She wrote PROFILE, a female-driven political thriller that played at both Berlinale and SXSW in 2018. THEM THAT FOLLOW is her first feature-length screenplay and marks her directorial debut. Dan Madison Savage is a writer and director. He was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and studied film history at Vassar College. After graduating, he moved to Los Angeles to complete an MFA at USC's School of Cinematic Arts. THEM THAT FOLLOW is his first screenplay and his directorial debut. Host: Shanee Edwards graduated from UCLA Film School with an MFA in Screenwriting and is currently the film critic for SheKnows.com.
