Lst chance for Film Fest tickets: https://buytickets.at/thedopeyfoundation/2216905 PAtreon: www.patreon.com/dopeypodcast This week on Dopey, Dave opens the show with a meditation on the Rolling Stones' “Monkey Man,” junkie music, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, and the impossibility of legally buying an MP3 in 2026. He also gets hyped for the first Dopey Short Recovery Film Festival, talks about bringing big ideas into reality through recovery, and reminds listeners to reach out for Narcan, fentanyl test strips, treatment help, stories, and voicemails. Then Dopey Nation delivers some truly insane listener stories: Danny B writes in about smoking crack and accidentally pulling a red-hot cherry through his stem into the back of his throat; JD D. Hart tells an all-time bath salts story involving paranoia, hiding drugs in his ass, a stuck vial, friends rescuing it with surgical gloves, and somehow winding up with hepatitis A, E, and C; and another listener shares a meth-fueled poop-in-a-bowl story that ends with shattered glass and hard poop in the basement. Dave also reads Patreon and Spotify comments on the Mishka Shubaly episode, including reactions to resentment, God, Trump, Mark Lanegan, liquid meth, the Bailey Dopey theme song, and whether Mishka came off as brilliant, annoying, or both. Then Dave sits down with beauty creator, recovery advocate, and Moda Smile founder Dean Moda for one of the most powerful and intense interviews in Dopey history. Dean talks about growing up in Brooklyn with Trinidadian and Panamanian parents, being gay, getting bullied, discovering weed, FIT, early sex work, squatting in Bushwick, and eventually being unknowingly introduced to crystal meth during a traumatic hookup that ended in sexual assault. Dean shares how that night opened the door to years inside New York's chemsex scene, where crystal meth, sex, shame, danger, and trauma became impossible to separate. He talks about meth psychosis, paranoia, hallucinations, PCP-laced joints, treatment attempts, relapse, Greenhouse Treatment Center in Texas, Crystal Meth Anonymous, and the moment he finally understood that one hit would always lead to more. It is a brutal, funny, honest, deeply vulnerable story of trauma, addiction, identity, survival, and recovery — plus somehow, teeth whitening. PLUS MORE MORE MORE! In this episode of Pushing Up Lilies, I'm examining the disturbing case of Shawn Michael Grate, a serial killer whose crimes spanned a decade across northern Ohio and left multiple families forever changed. What makes this case especially unsettling is not only the length of time the murders continued, but how many opportunities there may have been to stop the violence sooner. As investigators pieced together the evidence, a clearer picture emerged of a predator who targeted vulnerable women, leaving behind unanswered questions and unimaginable heartbreak. As a forensic death investigator, I walk through the timeline of the investigation, the evidence that ultimately connected the cases, and the forensic and investigative techniques that helped bring long-awaited answers to the victims' families. We'll also discuss how missing persons investigations, crime scene evidence, and victim identification play critical roles in solving complex serial homicide cases. But as with every case I cover, I want to keep the focus where it belongs. On the victims. Each woman had a life, a story, and people who loved her. Behind every headline was someone whose future was stolen far too soon. Their lives deserve to be remembered with dignity, not simply as part of a criminal's history. This episode explores the realities of serial homicide investigations while honoring the individuals whose stories might otherwise be overshadowed by the person responsible. This episode contains discussion of homicide, sexual violence, and serial murder. Listener discretion is advised.

Send me a DM here (it doesn't let me respond), OR email me: imagineabetterworld2020@gmail.comToday I'm honored to introduce you all to: Sexual assault survivor, whistleblower and overcomer, Frontwoman, singer and songwriter for the band Wisher, loving fiancee to Noah, black belt badass, belly dancing goddess, workout fanatic, creative writer, artist and poet, Pirates of the Caribbean devottee, animal lover, Pokemon card collector, special effect and set building aficionado, former Jane from Tarzan, recovering alcoholic and sobriety champion, and an incredible young woman breaking her silence for the first time today: Kayleigh KAnnA little bit about Kayleigh and what we will be discussing today: Born with dreams that refused to stay small, young Kayleigh scribbled “singer” on those childhood “what I want to be” papers. Music was never a hobby - it was destiny written in her bones. Today, as the ethereal yet thunderous voice of Wisher, Kayleigh channels that calling into symphonic metal that blends the grandeur of Nightwish, the cinematic sweep of Hans Zimmer, and the heavy fire of Avenged Sevenfold. Their music is raw, evolving, and deeply human: shorter, sharper tracks like “Aqua Devita” that feel like emotional release, harmony-laden guitars that soar like choirs, and live shows where Kayleigh performs as if every modest venue is Live Aid. She closes her eyes, sees thousands, spins, jumps, and pours out her soul - because the stage is her haven, her zone, and her way of sharing joy no matter if two people or two thousand adoring fans stand before her.Wisher itself tells a story of growth and chosen family. After years of lineup changes and compromise, the current steadfast crew of Wisher jams from the heart - meshing whimsical wonder with crushing riffs, and prioritizing real connection over perfection. The band's journey mirrors Kayleigh's own: honest, theatrical, a little intense, and utterly authentic. They've turned bar stages and club nights into sacred spaces of celebration, even when life throws emergencies, health struggles, or industry hurdles their way. Kayleigh leads with love, canceling shows if a bandmate needs care - always choosing mental health and family over deadlines, because she knows what truly matters.Yet Kayleigh's light shines brightest against the shadows. She has looked unflinchingly at the entertainment industry's underbelly - its documented ties to exploitation and human trafficking - and refused to dim her own path. A survivor herself who carries the weight of knowing too much, she re-evaluated her dreams rather than selling her soul for fame. She speaks openly about the darkness: artists lost, survivors silenced, monopolies like Live Nation squeezing out local voices, and the ethical cost of “success.” Her response? Double down on integrity, support real artists who build with heart and entrepreneurship, treat music as ministry, prioritize purpose over profit, and fiercely protect what is sacred. And on today's show, Kayleigh will be breaking the silence on her own story of survival - a life-altering, traumatic event and aftermath that changed her life forever. A testimony of ultimate betrayal by people she loved, trusted, and cared deeply about. And together, we will be taking off the heavy layers of guilt and shame that have weighted heavy on her heart and soul for many years, and shedding them - handing them back to those who caused the betrayal that was never supposed to happen. Kayleigh has spent years advocating for others - she has loudly been cheering on the survivor community - learning, educating others, and being an incredible ally - all while silently harboring a testimony of her own. And today that silence breaks. Today, a bright light gets shined on the darkness. And today, Kayleigh's voice expands from singing on stages and her online advocacy, and into the eyes and ears of those ready to bear witness to her own story of overcoming. Today, she passes the torch she has received from other survivors in her own healing journey to all of you here with us today. Kayleigh is proof that survivors don't just endure - they rise, they sing, they uplift. In her music and her message, she hands us back our own light: the reminder that we all have a soul, a purpose, and the power to create beauty anyway. She is living testimony that no matter what you've survived, your voice can still shake the world with love.
A predator rarely “shows up” as a stranger in the dark. Sometimes he shows up as a trusted helper with a badge, a friendly smile, and the perfect reason to be near your child. In the final episode of Season 7, we talk with Conference on Crimes Against Women presenter Chris McGhee, the father of a survivor and a relentless advocate for criminal justice reform, to unpack how sexual assault grooming actually works and why it can fool entire families.Chris breaks down grooming as a deliberate playbook: selecting vulnerability, building trust, crossing boundaries in small steps, then using shame and fear to keep a victim quiet. He shares how his daughter Grace was targeted by a school resource officer who first positioned himself as a mentor, then weaponized his authority, his community reputation, and Grace's relationships to trap her. We connect these real-world details to the grooming model described by Dr. Georgia Winters and Dr. Elizabeth Jeglic so listeners can recognize the patterns, not just the headlines. We also talk about the aftermath: PTSD, triggers, and the unique pain of watching a case end in a plea deal that doesn't feel like justice. Chris explains how disappearing-message platforms like Snapchat can complicate investigations, and how survivors can experience secondary victimization while navigating reports, interviews, and court decisions. Finally, we focus on prevention and change: open parent-teen communication, removing blame from children who were manipulated, and pushing for anti-grooming laws and accountability when mandated reporters abuse power. If you care about child safety, sexual assault prevention, and real criminal justice reform, listen through and share this with someone who needs the language to spot grooming sooner.

The murder of a young girl has sparked a reckoning with France's failures to investigate and prosecute violence against children. A historian's take on bringing Charles de Gaulle to the big screen. And how France's legal recognition of animal sentience has yet to guarantee the welfare of farm animals. The murder of a child in south-west France has caused outcry after it emerged that the chief suspect was previously accused of raping and sexual assaulting other children – but had never been charged, or even interviewed by police. Child welfare advocates and feminist groups have started weekly demonstrations outside the Justice Ministry, demanding stronger action against systemic failures to investigate, prosecute and convict child abusers. Steffy Alexandrian and Arnaud Gallais, who both founded child protection groups after being sexually abused, describe their experiences with the justice system and why an overhaul is long overdue. (Listen @3') On 18 June 1940, a then little-known general made a radio broadcast from London to German-occupied France to rally the French resistance. Few heard his call, but the speech would launch Charles de Gaulle on the path to becoming one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century. Eighty-six years later, de Gaulle is back in the spotlight thanks to the blockbuster biopic La Bataille de Gaulle. Historian Julian Jackson – whose acclaimed biography, A Certain Idea of France, inspired the film – talks about the delicate process of bringing history to the screen, the general's love-hate relationship with Winston Churchill, and why his warnings about Europe's dependence on America still resonate. (Listen @18'40'') In July 1976, France passed a landmark law for animal rights: Article L214 of the Rural Code, which recognised animals as “sentient beings” with needs that humans had to respect. Fifty years later, animal studies specialist Émilie Dardenne says it has not stopped sometimes shocking cruelty in France's massive farming industry. Many survivors of sexual violence receive what's called a sexual assault forensic exam to collect evidence for law enforcement. These exams can take hours and they usually happen in an emergency room... which can be a harsh environment to spend the hours after a traumatic experience. A new clinic in Minneapolis will be the first in the Twin Cities to provide an alternative, with more focus on healing and follow-up treatment. Sahan Journal recently reported on the effort by Southside Community Health Services. And the organization's medical director Sheila Kennedy joined Minnesota Now to talk about it.

Jas Rawlinson is a fearless journalist, author and advocate. But before she was any of those things, she was a girl trying to survive in a home filled with domestic violence and coercive control. Jas grew up watching her father abuse her mother. She carried that shame into her first relationship, where love bombing turned into sexual abuse. But Jas didn't stay silent. She reclaimed her story and her power. And now, she's on a mission to expose the systems that exploit vulnerable women. In this episode of I Catch Killers, Jas explains the difference between physical and emotional abuse, and why the latter is so often dismissed, why she went undercover to expose Brisbane’s illegal massage parlour industry, and why she refuses to believe all men are the problem. “What were you wearing?” sounds like a question, but it often functions like a verdict. From the the 2026 Conference on Crimes Against Women in Dallas, we sit down with Dr. Mary Simmerling and Dr. Denise Huskins Quinn to unpack the What Were You Wearing exhibit, a traveling art installation that recreates the everyday outfits survivors wore during sexual assault and pairs them with stories, audio, and case artifacts. The result is confronting and deeply human, designed to put the work of bearing witness back on the community and to dismantle victim blaming in real time.Mary traces the exhibit back to a poem she wrote after her own assault at 18 and explains why art can reach places training manuals cannot. Denise shares the harrowing facts of her 2015 kidnapping and rape, and the second trauma that followed when police and media pushed a false narrative that the crime was fabricated. We talk about confirmation bias, interrogation tactics like the Reid technique, and the impossible “credibility tests” survivors get trapped in, from being judged as too emotional to not emotional enough. We also dig into what it means to make a problem “visible” when shame and silence keep so many stories hidden, and how the team thoughtfully includes well-known cases, including their work with the family of Gabby Petito. Finally, we preview a new companion installation built around another loaded question: “Why didn't she just leave?” and the life-or-death realities of domestic violence, resources, and lethality risk during separation.

In this episode of Pushing Up Lilies, I'm covering the heartbreaking case of Rachel Castillo, a young mother whose disappearance in Southern California led investigators to a devastating discovery, and ultimately, the conviction of her estranged husband, Zarbab Ali. Rachel vanished during what should have been a routine custody exchange involving her children. But almost immediately, investigators began uncovering signs that something was terribly wrong. What followed was an intense investigation involving surveillance footage, blood evidence, digital tracking, and a search that ended with Rachel's body being found buried in a remote area. As a forensic death investigator, I walk through how cases like this begin to unfold behind the scenes, how small pieces of evidence start forming a timeline, how investigators interpret behavioral patterns, and how critical those early investigative decisions become when someone suddenly disappears under suspicious circumstances. This episode contains discussion of domestic violence, homicide, and burial concealment. Listener discretion is advised.

Often, cases of sexual violence are treated as a criminal justice issue. But this approach can lead to repeated harm, doubt, and underreporting. Survivors, experts and service providers alike are calling on all of us to start viewing this as a public health crisis. In the Loop discusses how our approach to treating and preventing sexual violence could improve, and what resources exist to support and empower survivors in our area. Resilience clinical services supervisor Jillian Furey, DePaul University professor Megan Greeson and Department of Family and Support Services' Laura Ng all join us to dig into this issue.
