Jonte Knif was interested from an early age both in engineering and musical instruments and music. During the following 6 years Knif played in many ensembles specializing in music from medieval times to Frank Zappa, and started to build tube amps and design speakers and harpsichords, which got international recognition. Knif switched to study in the department of music technology in Sibelius-Academy and graduated in 2005. After graduation, he decided to concentrate on hardware design and founded Knif Audio in 2005. This episode of Composing Myself sees Wise Music Group CEO Dave Holley and Creative Director Gill Graham venture - digitally, naturally - to the wild hinterlands of northern Finland for a highly illuminating conversation with Outi Tarkiainen. Winding through subjects as diverse as motherhood, how synesthesia affects and influences the compositional process, foraying into the world of jazz, and breaking down long-standing taboos in classical music, this is forty-five minutes you'll be glad to have spent listening closely to.https://www.outitarkiainen.fi/en/Outi Tarkianen was born in Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland, a place that has proved a constant source of inspiration for her. She has long been drawn to the expressive power of the human voice, but has written vocal, chamber and solo instrumental works as well as works for orchestra and soloist. ‘I see music as a force of nature that can flood over a person and even change entire destinies', she once said.Outi has been commissioned by orchestras including the San Francisco Symphony, BBC Symphony, BBC Philharmonic, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestras and her music has been taken up by the symphony orchestras of St Louis, Detroit and Houston, among others. Her early work with jazz orchestras culminated in Into the Woodland Silence (2013), a score that combined the composer's sense of natural mysticism with the distinctive textures of the jazz orchestra tradition. Major works since include an orchestral song cycle to texts by Sami poets The Earth, Spring's Daughter (2015), the saxophone concerto Saivo (2016, nominated for the Nordic Council Music Prize) and Midnight Sun Variations premiered at the BBC Proms in 2019 (nominated for the Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco's Musical Composition Prize). Her first full-length opera, A Room of One's Own (2021), was commissioned and premiered by Theater Hagen in Germany.Outi studied composition at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, the Guildhall School in London and at the University of Miami. As part of Radio 3's New Year New Music, Kate Molleson talks at length to one of the 21st-century's leading creative artists – the Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho. Celebrating her 70th birthday this year, Kaija describes music as a study of self and the human spirit. Kate meets her at home in Paris where she reflects on her life in music, describing the the conviction with which she pursued compositional classes with Paavo Heininen at the Sibelius Academy, and the distinctive musical style she developed as a result. Kate hears how Saariaho found herself in the musical milieu of Paris and the draw of the city's research institute for music and sound, IRCAM, where she cemented her place on the world stage with a dazzling work for small chamber orchestra and electronics inspired by the aurora borealis, Lichtbogen (1986). She tells Kate too about the challenges of writing her opera Innocence, whose subject matter deals with the legacy of trauma surrounding a shooting in a Finnish International School, and the inevitability of embodying the emotional pain of the story's characters during the composition process. And as 2023 commences, Kate is joined by the Managing Director of the London Symphony Orchestra, Kathryn McDowell, and the music journalist and author, Norman Lebrecht, to discuss the major challenges and opportunities awaiting the musical world in the year ahead.

Welcome to Bittersweet Symphony, a podcast about the bitter, sweet and bittersweet memories and experiences of classical musicians during the pandemic. Hosted and produced by me, Cliodhna Ryan, a violinist, it's an intimate and heart-warming exploration of the human spirit. My guest in episode ten is french horn player Hannah Miller. She shares the bitter experience of a chamber ensemble trial in Paris thwarted by endless lockdowns, and her sweet experience of restoring her great-grandmother's chicken coop which had fallen into disrepair. Her family worked on the project together and it became the first of many building efforts they embarked on collectively. Her bittersweet memory is of her graduation from Julliard. This milestone didn't happen in New York with her classmates but online, which meant she could celebrate this moment with her entire clan. Hannah Miller attained her Bachelor degree at Finland's Sibelius Academy and graduated with a Master's degree from New York's Juilliard School in 2021, where she was awarded with the William Schuman Prize for outstanding achievement in Music and leadership. During her time in Finland, Hannah won the position of Associate Principal Horn with the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra, and has since gone from strength to strength as an orchestral musician, performing with the Irish National Opera, Tapiola Sinfonietta, Irish Chamber Orchestra and joining the Verbier Festival Orchestra in 2019. As a member of the Irish contemporary music group Kirkos Ensemble, she has been featured in solo and chamber music concerts performing a wide range of new works. She has performed with Crash Ensemble, Le Concert Impromptu and Ulysses Ensemble. Hannah is the Festival Director and founder of ‘FuddleFest', a music festival based at her home in Fuddletown, Wexford which first took place in August 2021. In Part 2 of our conversation, Pasi talks about the reason he and his trumpet section in the Helsinki Philharmonic perform Sibelius on German trumpets, which sheds some light on Sibelius' background and concepts of sound. In addition, we talk about interpreting Sibelius, the Finnish tradition of phrasing, how it can be different from the American approach, and what it is like for Pasi and Valtteri when playing Sibelius as substitutes in non-Finnish orchestras.

So who better to ask about the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius than two players who have performed his music for most of their lives? In Part 1 of our conversation, we talk about Sibelius and his influence on Finnish culture. Pasi and Valtteri also discuss how Sibelius used nature and silence in a number of his works, specifically in the Fifth Symphony.

Antonio Alemanno - Speaking your Soul with Music

Outer Travel - Inner Journey

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 26, 2020 26:01

This episode of Outer Travel, Inner Journey, is a love story-- of a dedicated and soulful musician's love affair with his instruments. Meet Antonio Alemanno. He is a multi-instrumentalist and composer who has traveled here and there discovering the language that speaks his soul-- MUSIC. His journey started exploring the distinctive, bright, and powerful sound of charango. It's a small Andean stringed instrument of the lute family that produced the Motorcycle Diaries movie's popular music. Antonio learned the charango and transcribed more than ten songs from a composer from Buenos Aires, whom he met and heard the stories behind the songs from. It was at this moment that Antonio became acquainted with the nuances of music. The stories and emotions behind it may be very emotional and intense but one could not necessarily hear that from the songs. Stories could drift away from the instrument, like how he didn't connect with the charango stories. So Antonio's journey discovered the respective translation of an instrument's and music's tradition into new contexts and its practical use as a language of the soul. He and Alex delved into a productive discussion of contentious narratives around this. To him, art, like a human soul, has an inner journey and an outer story expressed in it. He explains that putting music in a different context does not necessarily remove its sacredness; it depends on what you do with it. While learning the Oud, an Arabic lute, Antonio finally unraveled the secret to learning and speaking with music. The Oud was a delicate instrument to learn, but he just went on, tried, and took the challenge. With the help of one of his teachers, Antonio has opened the gate to learning by surrendering to the instrument. Playing and composing came out naturally from him because he was learning from the instrument in much the same way that the instrument is learning and feeling what his soul speaks of. To him, it was the realization of 'bringing something in a different context with full respect to the tradition'. Links mention in the podcast Antonio's website Watch video of the podcast Support me on Patreon and receive great gifts! Start today – Road to Self Care – Ayurvedic Self Massage Techniques   Podcast Highlights The instrument has a life in itself and it can teach you. In one of my classes, my teacher said, I am not letting go-- like I am putting too much where it needs very little. It was like a gate opener. It revealed a lot to me. An instrument is on its own, but how you relate to it makes you one with it. If you blend with it, music becomes your language. - Antonio Alemanno Music is vibration. What I learned from Yoga and now reaffirming with you is the art of surrendering. Instead of trying to control something, let the music and the instrument teach you. Hear each other's language. Each one is teaching each one. - Alexandra Kreis The inner voice may not always be right. But how do you know? Truth can be so relative and individual at times. Observe where truth resonates more and follow those vibrations. - Antonio Alemanno Antonio’s Superpower Wish: Getting the green on the traffic light. Will power. When faced with a challenge, my will power gets shaken too. In yoga and music, it's about listening. It's about relating to your inner voice and intuition. At the end of the day, you will have to find a compromise. It's not easy, but if you have a strong feeling about something, try it. Do it. - Antonio Alemanno Will power can be so easily abused and misperceived. But the beauty of will power, combined with intuition gets you good results. People can say what they want, but you'll know what is true and you're going to make it true for you. - Alexandra Kreis   Guest BIO Antonio Alemanno, from Italy, has been traveling here and there; wherever his calling is bringing him.  He is a professionally trained multi-instrumentalist (double bass, cello, oud, charango, frame drums, electronics) and composer, graduated at Sibelius Academy in Global Music (MA) Helsinki, Finland. He has developed a distinctive rhythmical and melodic approach, in which he borrows and blends the different colors and nuances of the instruments he plays. He is also a Hatha yoga teacher and practitioner.

Lasse Enersen is a Finnish composer who studied composing in the Sibelius-Academy 2001-2004. He has also assisted film composers (Alexandre Desplat, Abel Korzeniowski, Heitor Pereira). Enersen started his film composer career working on numerous international documentary feature films, but his first fiction feature film credit came with Tuntematon Sotilas/ Unknown Soldier by Aku Louhimies, which became the biggest box office hit in Finland in 60 years. TUNTEMATON SOTILAS/ UNKNOWN SOLDIER is the story of an infantry unit's tour of duty that lasts for more than three years during the Finnish Continuation War. The film is based on the classic novel by VÄINÖ LINNA. The film is the story of four young Finnish soldiers, and their brothers-in-arms and shows how friendship, humour, and the will to live unite these men on their way to and back from war. This telling of the story demonstrates how the war changed the lives of each of the soldiers, of those on the home front, and ultimately their entire nation. In this episode, Lasse Enersen shares several behind-the-scenes stories about his composing and the recording of his original score. He talks about how his unique approach to this score was influenced by an Irish hardanger d'amore player and Finnish lullabies. He also discusses how he sought to ironically capture beauty in a story about war and how the most popular piece of his score was one he wrote in just 15 minutes. Lastly, Lasse Enersen shares the story of how he ended up having three, custom decca mics created for the recording of this score.ANNOTATED SEGMENTS - Suite from Tuntematon Sotilas02:20 - Hardanger, Nature and Lullabies06:01 - Scoring a movie of war and of men09:54 - Great beauty12:27 - A Finnish Orchestra and Decca Mics16:04 - Catharsis and FreedomSOUNDTRACKThe original soundtrack to Tuntematon Sotilas was released in October of 2017. Welcome to Secrets of Organ Playing Podcast #129! Today is a special podcast. Our subscribers who know me probably are aware that I am quite a spontaneous person, I don't like to plan too much. So yesterday when I received an email from a Finish organist Airi Saloniemi asking for an opportunity to try our largest pipe organ in Lithuania at Vilnius University St John's church, I spontaneously said, "Yes". So now because of this Airi and her husband Tuomas Saloniemi are next to the organ bench besides me. Airi is an organist and cantor in Vantaa which is a city next to Helsinki, capital of Finland. There is an area called Korso and they have a small church (17000 members in a congregation). She works there every week, playing services and leading choirs. Tuomas, like Airi studied at Sibelius Academy and he plays tuba. It was at the Sibelius Academy that they met each other. Recently he decided to switch careers and now works in communications for a healthcare company but still plays tuba occasionally. In this conversation, Airi and Tuomas share their experiences about playing organ and tuba, what are challenging and exciting things to them, about their practice ideas, especially the famous 10000 hour rule. Airi is a connector and she makes things happen because she organizes concerts in her church and Tuomas has communication and marketing skills which are vital for anyone living in today's world. I actually suggested Tuomas to start a podcast about tuba music and tuba players since there is a lack of in-depth conversations in the tuba world. And don't forget to help spread the word about the SOP Podcast by sharing it with your organist friends.
