Dr. Kersti Kents moved to Muskoka in 2006 and began working full-time in the emergency department. A chance meeting in the ER, in 2009, resulted in a new addition to her career path – aesthetic medicine. After several years of training, Medical Aesthetics of Muskoka was established in 2013. In 2017, Dr. Kents recognized a dire need for dermatologic medical support in Muskoka. She decided to pursue a postgraduate diploma in practical dermatology, and changed her scope of practice to include Skin Disorders. With 2 daughters under the age of 8, working full-time in the ER, twice a week at her aesthetics practice, bi-weekly at a medical spa in Barrie, as well as travelling out-of-region for multiple weeks to complete her dermatology supervision, it was no easy task. But the ability to grind through adversity and tough challenges is part of what makes an entrepreneur successful. With the support of her husband, family, colleagues and close friends, she was able to persevere and achieve her goals. Having retired from Emergency Medicine in December 2020, Medical Aesthetics of Muskoka now operates 5 days a week, providing dermatologic care as well as aesthetic medicine treatments. Fostering a business culture that promotes open communication, Kersti attributes much of the clinic's success to her team of hard-working, supportive and committed staff members. Workplace bullying is a persistent pattern of mistreatment from others in the workplace that causes either physical or emotional harm.[1] It can include such tactics as verbal, nonverbal, psychological, physical abuse and humiliation. This type of workplace aggression is particularly difficult because, unlike the typical school bully, workplace bullies often operate within the established rules and policies of their organization and their society. In the majority of cases, bullying in the workplace is reported as having been by someone who has authority over their victim. However, bullies can also be peers, and occasionally subordinates.[2] Research has also investigated the impact of the larger organizational context on bullying as well as the group-level processes that impact on the incidence and maintenance of bullying behaviour.[3] Bullying can be covert or overt. It may be missed by superiors; it may be known by many throughout the organization. Negative effects are not limited to the targeted individuals, and may lead to a decline in employee morale and a change in organizational culture.[4] It can also take place as overbearing supervision, constant criticism, and blocking promotions.[5] Step One - Name it! Legitimize Yourself! Step Two - Take Time Off to Heal & Launch a Counterattack Step Three - Expose the Bully Stress-related diseases and health complications from prolonged exposure to the stressors of bullying: Cardiovascular Problems: Hypertension (60%) to Strokes, Heart Attacks; Adverse Neurological Changes: Neurotransmitter Disruption, Hippocampus and Amygdala atrophy;Gastrointestinal: IBD, colitis; Immunological Impairment: More frequent infections of greater severity Auto-immune disorders;Fibromyalgia (21%), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (33%);Diabetes (10%); Skin Disorders (17%) Nausea, Tremors of the Lips, Hands, Etc., Feeling Uncoordinated,Chills, Profuse Sweating, Diarrhea, Rapid Heartbeat, Rapid Breathing, Elevated Blood Pressure, Chest Pain, Uncontrollable Crying, Headaches; 37% of workers have been bullied: 13% currently and 24% previously; Most bullies are bosses (72%) ;More perpetrators are men (60%) than are women(40%); Most Targets (57%) are women; Women bullies target women (71%); men target men (54%); Bullying is 4 times more prevalent than illegal discriminatory harassment; 62% of employers ignore the problem;45% of Targets suffer stress-related health problems; 40% of bullied individuals never tell their employers; Only 3% of bullied people file lawsuits --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theadamparadox/support

18 December 2012: Join presenter Dr. Robert Dellavalle as he speaks with Dr. Anna De Benedetto, from the University of Rochester Medical Center, about the relationship between skin barrier disruption and subsequent immune responses and skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis, and blistering.
Living with psoriasis since the age of 11, Irene was told by her doctors she could simply take a cream and it will go away. However by the age of 17 it spread to her entire body. Hospitalised for two weeks to undertake intensive treatment, she was trialed on a host of medications that only seemed to make things worse. She finally turned to Chinese Medicine and her skin cleared within two months. Irene then completed a double degree in Human Biology and Chinese Medicine. We discuss the interesting forms of treatments she underwent including herbal remedies and diet changes. Irene places a strong emphasis on managing stress levels to maintain a healthy immune system and the need to connect with our heart over our heads. If you suffer from psoriasis we talk about foods that you should avoid and the importance of monitoring and being in tune with your body's own reactions after eating certain foods. Of course we don't forget to talk about foods that you should be eating in abundance, the role of gut health and topical skin solutions. We also delve into the key differences between Western medicine and preventative Eastern medicine Links & Resources Website: https://www.salubre.com.au/ Discount code for 20% off all Salubre products: "Sister20"

Revision Techniques That Work Students up and down the UK are busy revising for exams. Claudia Hammond discovers which methods are effective from Professor John Dunlosky, and the results will send a shiver down the spine of those who've left their revision to the last minute. His review concludes that using a highlighter pen, underlining, reading and re-reading, and using mnemonics are the least effective techniques. Instead, students should do lots of practice tests and plan their revision sessions over time. Right or Wrong ? - Therapists Who Cry Last week's research paper from the USA on therapists who cry when their clients disclose something sad prompted scores of All in the Mind listeners to share their experiences. Claudia reviews the responses and airs a range of views. Out Of Area Hospital Care for Detained Patients An investigation by Community Care journal has disclosed an increase in the numbers of patients, detained under the Mental Health Act, who are being sent, many miles away from their homes, to be treated in private hospitals. Community Editor, Andy McNicoll tells Claudia Hammond about suspicions that out-of-area care is linked to acute bed closures and describes the concerns this practice raises for the care of vulnerable patients. Psychological Treatments for Skin Disorders More than half of the UK population experience a skin condition in any given 12 month period and the psychological impact on the individual can be enormous. The All Party Parliamentary Group on Skin has just published an updated report, a decade since they last investigated, criticising the lack of access to psychological help for sufferers and the trivialisation of skin disease in general. Dr Andrew Thompson, clinical psychologist and researcher at the University of Sheffield, talks to Claudia Hammond about the scale of unmet psychological need and Emma Rush, chairwoman of The Vitiligo Society, describes her personal experience of living with such a visible difference.
