Season 2 continues with January 2020’s bestseller, Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson. After the holiday rush it’s always interesting to see what book emerges as the front runner in the new year. NYU classmate Ethan Loewi and I dive into this darkly funny book about combustible children. Reviews were mixed on this one. Some people loved it, others put it down halfway through. Did Ethan and I delve in, or did we shelve it? Thanks so much for listening to Furthermore! What book did you begin your year with? Please stay safe and healthy out there. Head over to our Instagram, @Furthermorepodcast to comment and let me know what books you'd like to see Furthermore tackle. Keep Reading!

This short story is about a group of young schoolchildren living on Venus, who have never seen the sun in their lifetime. It’s about sacrifice, the pain of nostalgia, bullying. It’s super short but packed with stunning detail and emotion. Our discussion includes: Bradbury’s descriptive language [11:07] That ending! We love an ambiguous ending. What should the media learn from coronavirus?

The coronavirus is “a nightmare scenario” for media, wrote New York Times columnist Charlie Warzel. “It is stealthy, resilient and confounding to experts. It moves far faster than scientists can study it. What seems to be true today may be wrong tomorrow.” Warzel is right. We’ve talked a lot in recent years about fake news. But combatting information we know is false is a straightforward problem compared to covering a story where we don’t know what’s true, and where yesterday’s expert consensus becomes tomorrow’s derided falsehoods. In these cases, the normal tools of journalism begin to fail, and trust is easily lost. There’s been a lot of criticism of what the media missed in the run-up to coronavirus. Some of it has been unfair. But some of it demands attention, reflection, and change. There’s also a lot the media got right, and those successes need to be celebrated and learned from. The questions raised here are hard, and go to one of the trickiest issues in journalism: how does a profession that prides itself on reporting truth cover the world probabilistically? What do we do when we simply can't know what's true, and when some of what we think we know might become untrue? Warzel covers the way technology, information, and media interact with and change each other. He’s one of the people I turn to first when I’m churning over these questions, which is…not infrequent. And so what you’re going to hear in this podcast is a bit different than the normal fare: this is less an interview-with-an-expert, and more the kind of conversation that I — and others in the media — am having a lot of right now, and that I think we at least need to try and have in public.  References: What went wrong with the media’s coronavirus coverage? by Peter Kafka, Recode What we pretend to know about the coronavirus could kill us, by Charlie Warzel, NYT Book recommendations: The Uninhabitable Earth by David Wallace-Wells Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson Uncanny Valley by Anna Wiener If you enjoyed this episode, check out: Is the media amplifying Trump's racism? Chile is an exceptional country to grow vines in. Indeed, it is also the leading country of origin on our shelves here in Ireland and our brand leader (by quite a margin) is the Santa Rita label. Vine growing in Chile is mainly concentrated in valleys running away from the Andes towards the Pacific Ocean. Over time the unique characteristics of these valleys and their contribution to ripening grapes have been analysed and studied. This has led to Cabernet Sauvignon perfection from the Maipo and crisp Sauvignon Blancs from the Casablanca Valleys. It's a great story. Have a look at the Wine Folly web site, explore each the main valleys and see how they are being developed. Vina Aresti is unusual in Chile. It doesn't try to explore multiple valleys but instead focuses all of its winemaking from grapes grown in the one valley - the Curico. This is the largest of the 'wine valleys', lies 200 kms south of Santiago and has an incredible range of microclimates and soil types. See HERE for a fabulous and detailed account. It's a great download. Vina Aresti winemaker Juan Ignacio Montt dropped in to the WinePod and explained all! Pablo González-Calvo De Miguel travels the world representing the Garcia Family Wines. They are among the finest wines made in Spain. The family operates out of Ribera del Duero. Their ambition is to make the finest wine possible. The Garmón label is produced from Tempranillo (Tinta Fina) vines that are between 40 and 80 years old in the east of Ribera del Duero. The vineyards are as high as 1000 ms above sea level. Mauro, from Bodegas Mauro just to the north of Tudelo del Duero, is produced from 80 hectares of the most brilliant, ancient and stony vineyards. It's a 90% Tinta Fina/10% Syrah blend.  See HERE for a fabulous video! The San Román and Prima labels come from TORO where some of their oldest vines are ungrafted in phylloxera free soils! These are genuine pioneering wines. .. and they really do make great videos. see HERE! Time for another "What's Up at our Houses"... Purging is a hot topic for us this month. Personal purging & hosting the DTT Urge to Purge Challenge. Other stuff includes a life changing event at Kelly's that has nothing to do with decorating. At Anita's house she has embraced the de-cluttering concept with both arms. And she comes ready with lots of great tips on everything from seat covers to slippers. Speaking of slippers - here is a darling pair in case you are in the market. HERE (https://amzn.to/2MBfB78). You decide "house shoe", slipper, carpet slipper or heck, wear them out of the town! Too cute!! Kelly is working on her white garden during the 'winter' in Cali. Her plan is based losely on the white garden at Sissinghurst. See HERE. Anita mentioned a blog post on an Australian garden. See that post HERE (https://cotedetexas.blogspot.com/2019/01/down-under-with-jenny-rose-innes.html). De-Toxifying our homes has been on our minds and Anita has a new way to clean the water you drink. Try a Berkey water filter. Check them out HERE (https://amzn.to/2Tnjorr). Someone asked for our blog links. Here you go Cedar Hill Farmhouse (https://cedarhillfarmhouse.com) and My Soulful Home (https://mysoulfulhome.com). Let us know what is up at YOUR house! Wires & the technology that the wires support are part of our lives. The concept of wireless is fantasy. Even the "wireless" phones, gadgets and more that claim to be wireless are not. Even 'wireless' things need to be charged. So rather than giving in and putting up with the wireless lie we have solutions for you! Thanks to Darcy H for her question which inspired this episode. I wireless high 5 to Darcy !! Thanks for this great epiosde idea. We hope our thoughts help you & anyone else who is tangled up in cords. Try flexible moulding to conceal the the wires. Check it out HERE (https://amzn.to/2LUH2Z7). Keep all devices in need of charging in one room, like an office or create an enclosed charging station. Listen in for an idea on how to do this. Get a collective charging device for iphone, airpods & Apple watch. Kelly has this one from OLEBR HERE (https://amzn.to/2CS7a4f). Television wires - try painting the wall your tv hangs on black. Check it out on Pinterest - looks really cool. Or paint the wires that are exposed to match your existing wall color. Plug molds are the bomb for hiding wires. This one even has USB outlets. Check them out HERE (https://amzn.to/2AzbcNn). Circular holes in desks so wires can slide through and down to an outlet. Cable clip organizers. These look great to prevent grasping for fallen wires. See HERE (https://amzn.to/2CTZ2QD). Cord Tacos - super cute for controlling wires especially for travel. Could also make your own. Look at them HERE (https://amzn.to/2LVGsuf). Rolled jewelry organizers can be a great place to keep your wires tangle free. HERE (https://amzn.to/2C2IcNV) is a cute one. And here is one made just for devices, wires & chargers. If you listen to Decorating Tips & Tricks YOU ARE A DESIGNER! Even great designers need some extra help sometimes. If you find yourself in need of some help with your overall project, specific advice on decorating choices or simply another opinion on your space, you may decide to hire a decorator. Listen in for all our thoughts on this topic. Here are 7 questions we think you should ask anyone you are considering hiring for the all important job of your designer. How do you decide what projects are a good fit for you? Do you welcome client involvement, or do you prefer clients to be hands off? What elements define your own style and where do you find inspiration? What do you find most challenging about designing a home? What is your project management style? Give an example of a design mistake you made & how you handled it? How do you prioritize a design project? These are fair questions to ask a potential design hire. If answered honestly these questions will give you real insight into the person's style and how they handle a project. With that knowledge you can decide if you want to work with them on what is a very personal project ~ your home. Thinking of being your own general contractor and/or designer? If so this is a good read for you. Click HERE (https://mysoulfulhome.com/be-your-own-general-contractor/) Did you know Anita and Kelly offer virtual design consults through the shop Bespoke Decor. On this weeks programme we are joined by Paula Murphy and her family and friends who share with us what it means to them as a family to be involved with Focolare.Focolare was founded by Chiara Lubich in Trent, Northern Italy in 1944. During the Second World War, Chiara and a group of her friends, would read the Gospel together as they took refuge in the air-raid shelter each night and started to put the Gospel into action in their lives. The word Focolare means 'hearth' and those involved in the movement came to be known as focolarini, 'people of fire'. This nickname is appropriate because "there, even in the midst of the appalling destruction of the war, there was a joy, a light" (Susan Gately, God's Surprise). In living the Gospel, especially the call of John 17:21 "Father, may they all be one", the Focolare movement involves a strong inter-faith dimension and follows a communitarian spirituality which places a "deep emphasis on the communitarian dimension of Christian life" (See HERE). You will find more about Chiara HERE and the history of the Focolare movement HERE. On this week’s programme we are joined by Paula Murphy, Martina Gorham and Catherine Treacy and their children who shared the support they received from Focolare in nurturing their families’ faith. At each gathering, the families gather to celebrate the Eucharist and family members go into their own particular group depending on age and gender to receive a little teaching and share how they can apply this to their lives. The families then have a picnic together and a time for recreation. The Focolare meetings are an important way of helping adults and children to live the Gospel in a practical authentic way. For example, the children spoke about the Baby Jesus project where Focolare made little cribs with the Baby Jesus to give to people during Advent as a form of evangelisation. The children also showed us how to roll the Cube of Love and how this helps them to live the Gospel message of love in their everyday lives.
