Family and friends of missing Oceanside woman Angelica Brophy will be back on Palomar Mountain today to continue their search for the mother, who has been missing since early July. The USS Lincoln is on it's way back to San Diego, but it is still unclear when exactly it will return to NAS North Island. A celebration of life will be held today for former San Diego Chargers legend and sports broadcaster Billy Ray Smith Jr.     What You Need To Know To Start Your Saturday. 

I’m ba-a-a-ck! Being a grandfather isn’t something that you train for.  It was quite challenging last week to go outside and shoot basketball for an hour in the summer heat with an 8-year old intent on dispatching his creeky ol’ Grandpa in morning games of one-on-one. He took the overall 3-game series, but Grandpa held his own (at least for this year).  Now, where did I put that tube of SportsCreme? In fact, the past month has found my lovely wife and I spending a full week with each set of our five young (10 and under) grandsons.  We have enjoyed a total summer blast! Now, the house is quiet again.  Our eight-year old rescued Old English Sheepdog (Molly) seems to be mourning the loss of our fine young gentleman visitors and their very patient Dad. Molly enjoyed extra company during her morning and evening dog walks every day. It has been difficult to keep close tabs on sports while traveling to visit or hosting our very sharp and fun-loving grandsons over the past month. Some things appear to have changed a lot.  Others didn’t. It’s time to catch-up. Good news!  Saints legend Drew Brees was inducted into the Pro Football Hall-of-Fame! New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees led the Black and Gold to their only Super Bowl appearance and title in February, 2010.  He set numerous NFL passing records during his stellar 20-year pro football career. The Texas-born Brees was an excellent student as well.  He majored in Industrial Management at Purdue University.  Drew Brees quarterbacked the Boilermakers football team to the Rose Bowl in 2001 as the team won a share of the Big Ten title. The San Diego Chargers selected Brees with the first pick in the second round of the 2001 NFL draft. It’s hard to believe that he played in San Diego for the first five years of his pro football career. A trade to the New Orleans Saints in 2006 also paired Drew Brees with new head coach Sean Payton.  It would be a match made in WhoDat Heaven for us Saints fans. Hurricane Katrina devastated the city in August, 2005.  The Louisiana Superdome was painstakingly repaired and refurbished the following year as New Orleans welcomed home its beloved football team along with a new quarterback and head coach. Drew Brees’ infectious positive attitude and leadership skills helped the Saints improve every season leading up to that Super Bowl victory. More importantly, the Saints’ rise served to boost the spirits of the entire Gulf South region during recovery efforts from both Hurricane Katrina and, a month later, Rita in southwestern Louisiana. Sorry, Archie Manning supporters.  The true GOAT (greatest of all time) for the majority of New Orleans Saints fans is Hall-of-Fame quarterback Drew Brees.  Congratulations! Red-hot Red Sox are blazing in baseball’s American League! The Boston Red Sox have won 27 of their last 32 baseball games through Sunday, August 9.  Boston was at the bottom of the American League East standings earlier in the season. The BoSox are still seven games behind the Tampa Bay Rays with 45 games left to play in baseball’s seemingly never-ending 162-game regular season.  Late inning comebacks have been the rule during Boston’s recent hot streak during July and into early August. Will the Boston Red Sox remain hot during this hottest month of the year?  Stay tuned! The eight team UFL recently packed-up and left Houston and Birmingham.  Why? Spring pro football’s United Football League (UFL) quietly exited two of its long-time markets less than two weeks ago. The Birmingham Stallions won three straight spring football titles from 2022 through 2024.  A brand new college football stadium for UAB featuring nearly 40,000 seats played host for Stallions home games in each of the past five seasons. The UFL’s billionaire owner and apparent league spokesman, Mike Repole, jousted with Birmingham football fans earlier this season about their lack of support for the team. It’s no surprise that Repole just pulled the plug after attendance declined this year.  His excuse for leaving Birmingham is what has raised eyebrows in Alabama. He said, “With Birmingham, this decision was 100% about the wrong sized venue.  Even on opening day, when 16,000 Stallions fans showed up, the energy, passion, and game atmosphere was not felt due to the size of the venue.” Here’s a question for you, Mr. Repole. Doing just as you requested, the Houston UFL franchise vacated its college football stadium at the University of Houston.  The Houston Gamblers moved into the city’s downtown soccer venue with 20,000 seats this season.  How do you explain why less than 7,000 fans attended Houston Gamblers football games this spring?  The team did exactly what you asked for and had even less success.  Houston’s UFL franchise is now defunct. Perhaps Mr. Repole might consider that the UFL’s on-field product is simply not very good.  It is also played during increasingly hot spring weather – especially in the league’s southern markets.  UFL games – which are (generally speaking) low scoring and not very exciting to watch – have trouble attracting local fans when tickets were priced as low as $20 apiece. The market, sir, has been and continues to speak to you quite loudly. Golf – Welcome to the winner’s circle, Jackson Koivun and Asterisk Talley! Two weeks ago, former Auburn All-American golfer Jackson Koivun picked-up his first PGA win at the 3M Open in Minnesota.  It was only his third professional start! After Sunday’s middle-of-the-pack finish in his fourth PGA start at Greensboro, NC, the 21-year old Koivun has earned enough FedEx points to qualify for this week’s first round of PGA playoffs beginning Thursday in Memphis. Let’s also welcome a 17-year old upcoming high school senior golfer to the winner’s circle. Asterisk Talley (yes, that’s her real name) easily won her first USGA championship by taking the US Women’s Amateur title in Tennessee with an 8-up victory.  She had previously finished runner-up in the 2024 US Junior Girls Amateur and the US Women’s Amateur. Congratulations to Ms. Talley!  Yes, there will forever be an Asterisk next to her last name on the US Women’s Amateur trophy. LIV Golf remains on life support but wants to tee it up again in 2027 In this continuing soap opera, LIV Golf (completing its fifth season in late August) will lose its Sugar Daddy financial backers.  The Saudi Public Investment Fund (with over $1 trillion in assets) has lost more than $5 billion to start, fund, and prop-up this worldwide golf venture.  They are skedaddling by no later than the end of August. Last week, LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neal announced that a new lead investor has been secured.   Before you say, “Hooray!”, the golf league’s boss did not reveal a lot of specifics.  We don’t know who the investor is, how much money was actually being injected, or any other details which translate into a viable 2027 LIV Golf campaign. Golfers expecting to participate in LIV Golf during 2027 (assuming there is a season) will be playing for smaller prize money and will likely be asked to share in the risk (and, if possible, the rewards) of the revamped league. The future still looks shaky for LIV Golf. The US Senate punted on 4th down to go on vacation and leave the future of college athletics hanging in the balance When you woke up on Saturday morning, the United States Senate had adjourned to take a well-earned (sarcasm intended) full month of vacation. Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Maria Cantwell (D-Washington) were finally able to bring their college sports bill to the floor of the US Senate over the past few weeks.  It showed some encouraging signs of passage. The SEC and Big Ten finally jumped aboard to support the Senate’s “Protect College Sports Act” last week.  That was the equivalent to a two-minute drill in hopes of getting this bill across the Senate’s goal line prior to the legislative body’s annual August recess. College sports conferences have been unable to get their primary rule maker and enforcement arm (the NCAA) to take consequential actions in recent years.  Guidelines and enforcement of rules in today’s transfer portal and NIL high dollar environment have many mid-sized and smaller universities considering dropping sports altogether.  The SEC recently suggested it was willing to break away from the NCAA and establish its own set of rules if something doesn’t change soon. With the proverbial play clock running, some Senators (as they are prone to do) tried to add amendments to the college sports bill last week.  They wasted too much time and failed to bring it to a full Senate vote prior the month-long adjournment. However, the Senators are promising to bring this college sports bill to a vote when they return in early September. If that occurs, the sports bill must still be approved by the House of Representatives and then obtain the President’s signature to become law. Earlier this week, Pennsylvania’s resident rodent Punxatawney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter.  According to my calendar, we were already slated for six more weeks of winter prior to the official arrival of spring! For sports fans, there are just a few days left until the end of traditional football season.  We’ll discuss the big game coming up on Sunday in just a bit. Pro football (like the other major sports) has slowly stretched-out its regular season.  The NFL went from 14 games to 16 back in 1978.  A 17th regular season game became a reality after the franchise owners wisely trimmed the pre-season from a ludicrously long four games down to three in 2021. It isn’t a secret that the NFL owners now want to expand to an 18th regular season game in a few years. They are reportedly offering to cut the preseason from three meaningless games to two.  However, the NFL has telegraphed a desire to have each of the league’s 32 teams play one international game per year after expanding to 18 games. The NFL doesn’t do anything without a keen eye on profits.  They have calculated the value of international television rights and global merchandising.  It apparently makes financial sense. On Thursday, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees named to the NFL Hall-of-Fame! Saints fans are rejoicing today knowing that the greatest player in franchise history was voted into the Pro Football Hall-of-Fame Thursday in his first year of eligibility. Drew Brees received only two major college scholarship offers coming out of high school in Austin, Texas.  After three terrific seasons as the starting quarterback at Purdue, Brees also excelled in the classroom by earning a degree in Industrial Management. It’s hard to believe that the (cough) 6′ Drew Brees was not a first round NFL selection in 2001.  He was drafted on the first pick of the second round by the San Diego Chargers. Did you know that Drew Brees spent his first five NFL seasons playing for the Chargers? Fortunately for New Orleans Saints fans, Drew Brees was acquired by Louisiana’s Black and Gold team in 2006.  His arrival in the Crescent City coincided with the hiring of offensive-minded first-year head coach Sean Payton. The Saints’ new dynamic duo provided a much-needed shot of optimism into the region following the devastation caused by 2005’s Hurricane Katrina. Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints eventually won the Saints’ first and only Super Bowl title on February 7, 2010 with a 31-17 win over Peyton Manning’s Indianapolis Colts. Has it really been 16 years since that game was played? Brees and the Saints should have earned a second Super Bowl appearance at the end of the 2018 season.  The NFC Championship game played in New Orleans featured the all-time worst “non-call” by NFL referees on a quite obvious pass interference penalty late in overtime.  The visiting Los Angeles Rams won 26-23 but lost to Tom Brady’s New England Patriots two weeks later in the NFL title game. After a 21-year NFL career, Drew Brees retired at the end of the 2020 season.  The Saints legend set numerous NFL passing records including his incredible 54-game streak of throwing at least one touchdown pass. Drew Brees was an intense leader on the football field, an inspiring community leader off the field and is a proud father of four children. He has invested in several business ventures following his retirement from pro football.  Brees also returned to television in 2025 to cover regional NFL games for FOX Sports. Only 1.5% of NFL players will ever be inducted into the Hall-of-Fame.   Drew Brees deserved this honor and was voted-in during his first year of eligibility! Why is there even Pro Bowl game anymore? I don’t know. The NFL’s Pro Bowl game was played on Tuesday night. If I had known about it, it wouldn’t have mattered. My wife and I were fixated on the final night of the Westminster Dog Show (won by Penny the incredlble Doberman Pinscher). The top canines provided more compelling viewing than the NFL’s cringeworthy post-season fare. Tuesday night’s NFL Pro Bowl drew an embarrassing 1.9 million viewers.  That is down from last year’s slightly-less embarrassing 4.7 million Pro Bowl viewers. Historically, the Pro Bowl game would pit the NFL’s most talented players from the teams which had been eliminated from playoff competition.  The game (played in full pads and helmets) was held from 1980 and for more than three decades in lovely Honolulu, Hawaii on the weekend prior to the NFL’s title game. That tropical setting was once considered a big enticement for players to participate and bring their families along for a week-long vacation.  Those of us watching on television at home could enjoy a mental warm-up watching football being played in the toasty sunshine featuring nearby beaches. Not anymore.  Football players who are making millions of dollars per year don’t seem to value a fully-paid vacation week in Hawaii like they once did. In 2023, the Pro Bowl morphed into today’s goofy assortment of skills challenges and a 7-on-7 flag football game.  The venue was also scaled down.  This year’s game was played on Tuesday night in a 4,000-seat convention center arena in San Francisco. In case you cared, the NFC All-Stars rallied for a (cough) thrilling 66-52 flag football win over the AFC All-Stars. Zzz. The NFL’s championship game kicks-off Sunday at 5:30 PM CST on NBC This year’s season finale pits the AFC’s New England Patriots against the NFC Seattle Seahawks. Before the 2025 NFL season kicked-off, the oddsmakers in Las Vegas had last year’s champion Philadelphia Eagles plus the AFC’s Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills as the most likely teams to reach the championship game. Seattle and New England were significantly further down that list. Both teams missed the playoffs after the 2024 season.  The Seahawks at least finished 10-7, but New England was a dismal 4-13 just one year ago. Only the 1999 St. Louis Rams had won just four games in a season (going 4-12) prior to returning the following year to win the NFL title.  Rams’ quarterback Kurt Warner’s led the “Greatest Show on Turf” to an NFL championship.   What caused such a terrific turnaround for this year’s New England Patriots? Last season’s 4-13 record by New England resulted in the team firing head coach Jerod Mayo.  Former Patriots’ linebacker Mike Vrabel was given the chance to coach his former team beginning this season. Adding a talented coach like Vrabel certainly helped, but it doesn’t fully explain the Patriots’ turnaround story this season. The coach would replace 13 of the 22 starting players from last season.  Every one of New England’s 11 NFL draft selections last spring made the cut and is still playing on the team as of this week.  Add several financially prudent free agent signings, and the New England Patriots entered this season with a new team and a winning attitude. Coach Vrabel wanted “tough” minded players as he evaluate players being drafted or signed via free agency. A three-time NFL champion as a linebacker, Mike Vrabel played for legendary coach Bill Belichick and alongside quarterback Tom Brady for several years.  He saw what type of mindset won titles in New England over the past quarter century. The Patriots steamrolled to a 14-3 record and won the AFC East title during the regular season.  They beat the Houston Texans 28-16 in the divisional round and downed the #1 playoff seed Denver Broncos 10-7 in the AFC championship to earn a title shot this week. Seattle Seahawks traded their Pro Bowl quarterback and still improved in 2025 Gino Smith had been Seattle’s starting quarterback for two seasons through the end of the 2024 campaign.  Smith had been named to the NFL’s Pro Bowl for two consecutive years. Surprisingly, the Seahawks traded Gino Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders during the offseason and were left without a starting quarterback. Seattle then hit the free agent jackpot by signing journeyman Sam Darnold to a three-year contract.  Darnold is playing for his fifth NFL team in eight seasons and struggled for his first six years in the league.  His breakout 2024 season with the Minnesota Vikings helped Sam Darnold gain a more permanent home in Seattle. The Seahawks’ stingy defense was rated #1 in the NFL allowing just 17 points per game in leading Seattle to a sterling 14-3 regular season.  The Seattle offense also scored 28 points per game which was eighth best in the league. Coach Mike MacDonald was a successful high school football player who suffered a serious injury in his final game.  He attended the University of Georgia and didn’t play football. However, he started coaching a high school football team while still in college. A summa cum laude graduate in Finance, Mike MacDonald jumped into coaching upon graduating from college.  He would eventually become the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens.  The youthful 38-year old coach then accepted the head coaching job in Seattle two years ago. The Seahawks, like their head coach, play fundamentally sound football and rely on their top-rated defense to win games. You won’t find many familiar stars in this Sunday’s NFL title game Can you name the starting running backs for either Seattle or New England?  I can’t. America is going to get a chance to learn a lot about these two unheralded competitors and their coaches on Sunday night in Santa Clara, California. The Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots quietly did the weekly work to climb the standings and finish with identical 14-3 regular season marks. The two starting quarterbacks aren’t flashy but both passed for more than 4,000 yards in the regular season.  New England’s Drake Maye tossed 31 touchdowns but only had eight intercepted.  Seattle’s Sam Darnold had 25 touchdowns but was picked-off 14 times (third highest in the NFL this year). These two teams have identical season records, great defenses, and effective quarterbacks.  The biggest surprise to me is that New England is considered a 4 ½ point underdog in Sunday’s game. Lee Hacksaw Hamilton shares his “Hacksaw History” highlighting his career from Long Island to Ohio University, upstate New York, Cleveland, Phoenix and San Diego. We discussed Lee's early days doing play-by-play in minor league hockey, minor league baseball, and as a TV journalist. Then it was on to Cleveland to broadcast big time WHL pro hockey, a competitor with the NHL at that time. Then on to Phoenix KTAR where he lit the Valley of Sun on fire. In the late 1980s, San Diego called and invited Lee to be the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Chargers and also to host a sports talk show on XTRA 690. That sports talk show was the very beginning of an innovative all sports talk radio station that featured many names including Jim Rome, Steve Hartman, Chet Forte, Coach John Kentera, Billy Ray Smith, Scott Kaplan, Philly Billy Werndl, Jim Laslavic, Pat Curran and many more. This episode was originally aired as part of the John Riley Project on July 20, 2022. The History of Sports Talk Radio Lee shared his Long Island roots and the start of his radio news/DJ career in his college days on a radio station in Appalachia.  After a great run broadcasting pro hockey in Cleveland, he took his talents to the desert to announce Arizona State football and basketball. Hacksaw also hosted a sports talk show on KTAR in Phoenix shocking the locals with critical comments of ASU's football suspension, the Suns getting blown out in the first round of the 1981 NBA playoffs, and the ineptitude of Bowie Kuhn during the 1981 MLB strike. This was the start of the “Best 15 Minutes in Radio.” This was the start of “Putting Topics on the Table.”  “React!”  Lee was determined to grab his listeners by the throat and hold them for 4 hours of compelling sports talk radio. Hacksaw's reputation in Arizona led to a 1986 phone call from the Noble Broadcast Group in San Diego to be the San Diego Chargers play by play guy and start a sports talk show on the Mighty 690.  At the time the station was broadcasting rock n roll and Wolfman Jack. Little did they know that things were going to radically change in the next few years. Lee was the only sports guy in the entire station, and he started with a blank slate.  How in the hell was he going to pull this off? He started by creating a 9-hour NFL Sunday broadcast with a 2-hour Countdown to Kickoff pre-game show, the live game, and then a post-game show with caller participation.   The Mighty 690 Sports Talk Radio Meanwhile, every afternoon drivetime Hacksaw hosted his talk radio show using many of his provocative techniques to drive listenership. Lee was a sensation bringing sports facts, stats, and opinions in the late 1980s. He was the internet before the internet was a thing. After a brief transition to sports and news talk, the station went 100% sports starting in 1989. The Mighty 690 was the 3rd radio station in America to go all sports, and the first on the west coast. 690 had a “blowtorch signal” that carried Lee's show from “Baja to the Canadian Rockies” As 690 went all sports, many new voices took the microphone to create a wide variety of opinions and styles on sports talk: Jim Rome came on board to start his Scrub Saturday show. He later got the night shift right after Hacksaw's show, working on developing his style, his smack, and his clones. Rome later went on to national fame, but did you know Hacksaw was first offered the national gig prior to Rome but he turned it down. Steve Hartman joins the station and with Lee's recommendation he was paired up with former Monday Night Football producer Chet Forte.  Two loudmouth guys: one young, one old, one west coast, one east coast.  It was perfect. Steve Mason and John Ireland took on the morning show and later saw their careers take them to new places. Scott Kaplan and Billy Ray Smith joined the station creating a strong show and a loyal listening audience of Great Friends. The Coach John Kentera joins the station sharing his wealth of knowledge of local high school sports, plus offering his commentary on the San Diego pro and collegiate sports teams.   San Diego Chargers: I root for Herbert to Win, but Spanos to Lose As a long time voice of the San Diego Chargers play-by-play, and as an NFL junkie, Hacksaw was right at home broadcasting the Chargers every Sunday. We retrace some of the magical moments of the Chargers Super Bowl season including stories about Bobby Ross, Stan Humphries, Stan Brock, Tony Martin, Dennis Gibson, and the playoff run against the Dolphins in Steelers. We reminisce about the good vibes as both the team and the community both came together in a very special way. After the 1997 season The Mighty 690 lost its broadcast rights to the team, breaking promises made to the station and to Lee personally to stay on as the play-by-play guy.  Hacksaw was very disappointed with the decision, but he bounced back and was the play-by-play guy for the Seattle Seahawks for 3 seasons. So, how does Hacksaw feel about the Chargers now? This all followed a collegiate career playing for the University of Buffalo, where he was the most prolific pass receiver in program history with 240 receptions for over 3,400 yards and eighteen 100-yard games. In 2019 he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, where, present day, he is the wide receivers coach.
