He is often found huddled around a new script in development or dreaming up a revival of a favorite musical. His directing work collides fantasy with the mundane, and is often representative of queer and/or Jewish communities. He creates where generosity of spirt and pursuit of excellence go hand-in-hand. Michael is a ferocious advocate for the fourth wall and believes every second act deserves a dream ballet. In Fall 2023, Michael made his directorial Off-Broadway debut with JOB by Max Wolf Friedlich. The twice-extended, sold-out run was a New York Times Critics Pick and hallmarked as "Highbrow and Brilliant" in New York Magazine's Approval Matrix. The commerical transfer at the Connelly Theater in 2024 recouped its investment in five weeks. Born and raised outside New York City, Michael began his career as a child actor on Broadway. While stage managing his middle school musicals, he developed a deep passion for being behind the scenes. Michael has developed and staged new plays and musicals at HERE, Ensemble Studio Theater, JACK, SoHo Playhouse, Williamstown Theater Festival, IRT Theater, Lifeworld, Martha's Vineyard Playhouse, and the Pasadena Playhouse. As an Assistant, Michael has supported the work of Terry Kinney, Moritz von Stuelpnagel, Leigh Silverman, Jessie Nelson, and Joe Brancato. In addition to his directing work, Michael has worked as a General Manager and Company Manager Off-Broadway and on tour. He is the Co-Founder of G45 Productions, an artistic collective dedicated to new plays. His education spans Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Arts to Northwestern University to the Williamstown Theatre Festival to watching countless movie musicals as a kid. Chapo Trap House and Movie Mindset's very own Will Menaker stops by to help celebrate Denzember and discuss Carl Franklin's 'Devil in a Blue Dress', based on the inaugural Easy Rawlins mystery novel of the same name by author Walter Mosley. It's a stylish period noir made by a filmmaker and team seemingly uninterested in reproducing the aesthetic trappings of classic film noir, instead opting for a rich and colorful evocation of parts of 1940s Los Angeles rarely seen in the movies. We discuss the career of Carl Franklin, as well as this film's thematic links to his 1992 neo-noir masterpiece One False Move. Then, we discuss the movie's thoughtful subversions of classic film noir, exploring the conditionality of freedom and access to the American Dream for Black Americans in postwar era South Central Los Angeles. Elsewhere, we continue our discussion on Denzel as actor and offer praise to his performance in addition to the movie's supporting performances from a scene-stealing Don Cheadle and the stunning, underrated Jennifer Beals. Will's Top 5 Denzel Reaction GIFS:1. This week on Fabulous Film and Friends, we're concluding our look into the paranoid, dystopian lens of 70's sci-fi by discussing three of the four versions of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. We're talking the 1956 version directed by Don Siegel and starring Kevin McCarthy, Dana Wynter, King Donovan, Carolyn Jones, Larry Gates and Sam Peckinpah in a cameo, comparing it to the 1978 version starring Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Jeff Goldblum, Veronica Cartwright, and Leonard Nimoy along with both Don Siegel and Kevin McCarthy in cameos, as well as the 1993 version called Body Snatchers directed by Abel Ferrara and starring Gabrielle Anwar, Terry Kinney, Meg Tilley, Christine Elise, Billy Wirth, R. Lee Ermey and Forest Whitaker. My guests this week are series regulars Roseanne Caputi, David Johnson and George Young, and of course, the inimitable Gordon Alex Robertson. Before we harvest the crop of pod people, the synopses: All three films center around the idea that an alien species has invaded our planet and has replaced members of our community with look-alikes sprung from plant-like pods. The key difference in the pod people is that their personalities are devoid of emotion. Which Body Snatchers film wins the war? Find out!
We all have stories. It's just that Pat Healy's are better than yours. If you're Gabe, you know Pat from his directorial debut “Take Me” (now streaming on Netflix!)— but if you're like the rest of us, you know Pat from fucking EVERYTHING! “Ghost World”, “Magnolia”, “Cheap Thrills”, “Compliance”, “The Post”, “The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford” — fucking “Better Call Saul”! He also hung out at Steppenwolf with Michael Shannon, Terry Kinney, and goddamned STEVE MARTIN!!! So just kick back, shut up, and listen to Pat tell you about the time he cried in Steven Spielberg's office. You're welcome.

Welcome to another episode of OTTplay Now You Know, one podcast that talks about lesser-known trivia, facts about your favorite shows and films. I'm your host Nikhil Created by Shonda Rhimes, Inventing Anna is a Netflix drama series based on the fraudster, Anna Sorokin, who swindled money from banks and investors posing as a wealthy heiress. The show stars Julia Garner and Anna Chlumsky in lead roles and is currently one of the most popular shows on Netflix. Lucy Mangan of The Guardian stated in her review of the series, quote-unquote, “It may have more heft than it initially appears, but it is played essentially as a modern soap opera – and God, is it fun”. Let's dig into some trivia now. Star of the TV series Ozark, Julia Garner, had an unconventional auditioning process for Inventing Anna. She just had a meeting with creator Shonda Rhimes instead of an actual audition. According to Julia Garner, who plays the lead as Anna ‘Delvey' Sorokin, she found the real Anna very likeable and charming when Garner visited her in prison to research the character for the series. To perfect Anna Delvey's accent, Julia Garner spent time learning the German and Russian accents and mixed them together. She also added a few elements of the American accent as well because Anna Delvey lived in New York for several years. The actors who played the roles of the Scriberia journalist group, comprising of Jeff Perry, Anna Deavere Smith, Terry Kinney, and Anna Chlumsky, used their spare time in between scenes to play various theatre games. The Scriberia journalist group was the centre of comedic relief through the series, and actor Anna Chlumsky said that it was endearing that the series focused on her character Vivian Kent's love for journalism. The real name of journalist Vivian Kent, who broke the story about Anna Sorokin, the character played by Anna Chlumsky, is Jessica Pressler. Pressler is also portrayed in the 2019 film Hustlers starring Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu. In the film, her character was renamed Elizabeth for the film, and she is played by Julia Stiles, and the film is based on her article. If you haven't watched this series yet then do so streaming exclusively on Netflix.Well, that's OTTplay Now You Know for today's podcast I shall be back again with a brand new episode pretty soon until then it's your host Nikhil signing out.Aaj kya dekhoge OTTplay se poocho

Many of you likely know Actor Jeff Perry as the strategically conniving, power-hungry, Cyrus Beane opposite Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn on Shonda Rhimes' smash it, Scandal or as Meredith Grey's father on Rhime's other smash hit, Grey's Anatomy. What you may not know is that he is one of the founding members of the famed and respected Steppenwolf Theater Company, alongside High School pal Gary Sinise and college friends John Malkovich, Terry Kinney, Joan Allen and Laurie Metcalf. One of the many things I learned from working with Jeff on Scandal is that he is deeply passionate about the work. This conversation is full of his love for: stories that matter and a craft that he respects deeply. Lessons on perseverance, following your bliss over a paycheck, and how to stay true to one's self are littered throughout our chat. SHOW NOTES: How a passionate and encouraging Acting Teacher in HS launched Jeff and Gary Sinise's journeys as thespians at age 15, (2:43). The origins of Steppenwolf Theater Company, (4:03). More origins of Steppenwolf, "Seven of us got in a few cars and drove from Normal, Illinois to Highland Park..."(8:51). The effects of one passionate HS teacher on American Culture, (11:23). How the faculty of Illinois State influenced some of the greatest American Actors we have by training them not only to act, but to decide on which material they wanted to produce, (12:11). Being led by love of the work versus making money, (15:06). How lack of work led Jeff (and John Malkovich) to teach, which he loves, (17:06). How things shifted once Jeff started making bigger money, (21:11). The differences between stage work and camera work, (25:49). How disillusionment with a high-paying TV show that he didn't love sparked Jeff to launch the teaching arm of Steppenwolf 23 years ago, (28:06). How Steppenwolf's success in having shows moved to Broadway led to its members making a living as actors. (31:41). "Also in those years, from '82 to '89 the original, sort of people from the first and second generation of the company, started to get television and film work. And I felt like I was one of the last to crack that,"(33:04). "After many attempts at landing that kind of job, that's when I finally landed one: when, when I knew that psychically and emotionally I had just said, 'I don't care'," (36:31). How Jeff got Scandal by way of Grey's Anatomy, (40:00). The Scandal Experience, (51:06). Shonda Rhimes' brilliance in her quiet introduction to Jeff's character Cyrus' homosexuality after several episodes on a mainstream hit show, (54:26). The power of television and film in representing the under-represented, (56:51). Jeff's go to mantras and ways of thinking to help himself, (1:03:33). "Took a lot of decades to be calmer and not second guess so many things", (1:06:12).
