Kirkland & Ellis, the world's largest law firm by revenue, brought in more than $100 million last year from just one of its clients: Blackstone Inc. That's more than double the amount Kirkland earned from the private equity giant in 2023. The dollar amount itself is eye-popping, but also notable is that we even know this information at all. Blackstone was required to disclose the payments in investor filings late last month because a Kirkland partner, Reg Brown, sits on its board. On this episode of our podcast, On The Merits, we talk with Bloomberg Law's Brian Baxter about what Kirkland has been doing for Blackstone, the strong professional and personal ties between the two companies, and what the massive fees tally means for the law firm that typically handle's most of Blackstone's business, Wall Street's Simpson, Thacher & Bartlett. In a repost of a fan favorite from 2022, Laurel S. Braitman (re-)joins the podcast to talk about her most recent book, "What Looks Like Bravery: A Journey Through Love & Loss" about losing her father to cancer and finding herself in the process. She is the Writer-in-Residence at the Stanford School of Medicine. Her work has appeared in The Guardian,[5] The Wall Street Journal, Fast Company,[6] The New Inquiry,[7] Salon,[8] and a variety of other publications. She is a summa cum laude graduate of Cornell, and a TED talk fellow. She authored in 2015, "Animal Madness: How Anxious Dogs, Compulsive Parrots, and Elephants in Recovery Help Us Understand Ourselves." Braitman is a Thacher alumni and grew up over the hill in Santa Paula. Besides her father's (and mother's) remarkable life stories, we talked about the changes we've seen in Ventura County and Ojai over the decades, the writing process, how the publishing business has changed and where it's headed, and the saga of Monarch, the grizzly on the state flag. Laurel said it was captured in the Tehachapi Mountains, I believe it was in the Sespe wilderness. We did not talk about the Consumer Protection Bureau, Ventuckian musical genres or local mafia connections. Check out more about Laurel at https://www.laurelbraitman.com/

The historic twin light station on Thacher Island, off the east side of Cape Ann in Massachusetts. is one of the small number of lighthouse sites in the U.S. that are designated National Historic Landmarks. In 1771, there were nine lighthouses in operation in North America. The original twin lighthouses built on Thacher Island in 1771 were the first built to mark a dangerous spot rather than a harbor entrance, and they were also the last lighthouses built under British rule in the colonies. The two granite towers that stand today, 124 feet tall, were built in 1861 and fitted with first-order Fresnel lenses. The north light was deactivated in 1932. The twin lights of Thacher Island, Massachusetts In the 1980s, concerned citizens of Cape Ann formed the Thacher Island Association and chose a caretaker to live on the island. The Town of Rockport's Thacher Island Committee in partnership with the nonprofit Thacher Island Association maintains and operates the island, including both lighthouse towers. This episode includes historic audio recorded in the 1980s, as well as audio from a recent visit to the island with co-host Sarah MacHugh. Sarah spoke with Syd Wedmore, chairman of the Thacher Island Town Committee. Co-host Sarah MacHugh (right) on the way out to Thacher Island. The story is set in the distant future where Earth and Mars are on the verge of war. The last spaceship to leave Mars[1] headed for Earth is stopped and searched by Martian soldiers, who are looking for three saboteurs who destroyed a Martian city.[2] They are not found, and the ship continues towards Earth. On board the space ship, a business man by the name of Thacher meets a young woman and two men, who tell that they are the people sought by the Martians, and proceed to tell Thacher the story of how they did not destroy the Martian city, but used a device to reduce the entire city to fit in a tiny globe, which they smuggled on board the ship. The city is to be used as a bargaining chip against Mars in the upcoming war. Thacher reveals that he is a Martian secret agent, and several of the passengers on board are Martian police. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hmphaudiobooks/support

Gabriel estava interessado principalmente em fundir o pop a um som de outros sotaques, outras histórias neste álbum de hoje, o Peter Gabriel 4: "Security".Músicas Sebastiana (Gal Costa)Kiss of lifeRhythm of the heatLay your hands on meI have the touchWallflowerProdução: Baioque ConteúdoRoteiro e apresentação: Pedro SchwarczDireção: Newman CostaEdição: Felipe CaldoRedação: Luiz Fujita e Paulo BorgiaArte: Juliana BarbosaSegue a gente lá no insta: @umpaposobresom Produção: Baioque ConteúdoRoteiro e apresentação: Pedro SchwarczDireção: Newman CostaEdição: Felipe CaldoRedação: Luiz Fujita e Paulo BorgiaArte: CRIO.LAH

Journalist and biographer Mark Harris joins Liza to discuss the legacy of Elia Kazan and whether or not there is such a thing as a happy ending in Hollywood.
Legendary filmmaker Elia Kazan gave us such cinematic classics as On the Waterfront and A Streetcar Named Desire, but he made himself a pariah when he named names to the government. My guest today is Matthew Thomas-Malani. Matt and I went to high school together and reconnected a few years ago on Facebook when I shared a recommendation for the movie, Boy Erased, staring Lucas Hedges.Matt and I both grew up in religious communities that taught being gay was wrong -- a sin. As I have declared I no longer subscribe to those teachings, I've had people from that community respond quite harshly and critically. Imagine how much more difficult it is for someone to come out as gay in such an environment, as was Matt's experience.I'm so grateful for Matt's willingness to share pieces of his coming our journey. Today, Matt is happily married to Tony Brooks. Matt and Tony live in a carriage house in Pennsylvania with their three dogs -- Thacher, a treeing walker coonhound, and the beagle brothers, Franklin and Zebulon. Matt is a voracious reader, mostly of non-fiction and he loves good movies and certain sitcoms (with irreverent humor). He loves to cook and bake, although he says he's a better cook than baker. If you or someone you know is struggling with their coming our journey, here are some resources for support and encouragement.

I ran into Thacher at a horror convention and knew I had to get him on the show. He writes suspenseful thrillers and some down and dirty horror. He does it with his own style and that is what I wanted to talk about. We had a great time discussing many things. One was his new comic on Kickstarter called Grim Reefer: A Marijuana Fueled Horror/Comedy comic. We discuss hiring artists and finding that magic that makes a comicbook come together. After listening to this podcast, go over to https://demonweasel.com and check out Thacher's comics and novels, and especially check out his Kickstarter for Grim Reefer!

Will Aubrey, who has led the Helderberg Escarpment Hawk Watch at Thacher Park for more than two decades, is passing the torch — or perhaps the binoculars — to John Loz, who just finished his term as chairman of the Audubon New York Council. Each September, about 3,000 birdwatchers come to Thacher to count the raptors on their annual migration to South America.Aubrey says teaching is in his blood — both he and his sister became teachers, following their father and grandfather. With the Hawk Watch, he combines his passion for teaching with his role as a citizen scientist, reporting the numbers of each kind of raptor counted over 16 days to the Hawk Migration Association of North America and the NorthEast Hawk Watch.Aubrey describes the shapes and flight patterns that identify various raptors and says the local turkey vultures — “their wings in a V” — “act as a Welcome Wagon” for the raptors passing through, as they see the turkey vultures getting a free ride.“It's environmental monitoring,” says Aubrey of the count in this week's podcast at AltamontEnterprise.com/podcasts. THE REAL ESTATE SESSIONS PODCAST Episode 286: Host: BILL RISSER Guest: WENDY THACHER Episode Summary: Meet today's Guest, "https://www.linkedin.com/in/wendythacher (Wendy Thacher)," a business development manager with Chicago Title in Portland, Oregon. She is also one of Bill's top referral partners providing great guests on this podcast. In this episode, I sit with Wendy, born and raised in Iowa, as she talks about Portland, where she is presently based, and its appealing features, career path, and Real Estate tips. Top Takeaways: "It's important to do your homework and lead with value." - [Wendy Thacher] "If I don't ask enough questions or enough of the right questions, we're going to end up with a marketing strategy that isn't sustainable... that doesn't speak what the client is trying to convey." - [Wendy Thacher] "The overall goal is to have marketing strategies that are sustainable, feel good, and reflect who the agent is and the services they offer." - [Wendy Thacher] Episode Highlights: [00:34] Intro [01:36] Wendy shares her background and how she met Bill. [05:38] What is the biggest misconception about Iowa? [08:51] What brought you out of Iowa to the Pacific Northwest (Portland, Oregon)? [10:11] What are three activities you recommend for visitors to Portland? [12:54] What led you to work for Chicago Title? [16:24] What are some of the challenges you have faced as a service marketer? [18:20] What would you recommend for people who also want to lead with value when interacting with clients? [21:27] About Stephanie Chumbley. [26:11] If you had one piece of advice you could give a new agent just getting started, what would it be? [28:18] How to contact Wendy [29:28] Outro Episode Notes: Wendy shares the humorous event around how she met Bill at a conference in 2013 and built a great working relationship since then. As an active kid growing up, Wendy enjoyed the field of over 80 hectares of farmland in Iowa. Highlighting misconceptions about Iowa that it is Ohio or Idaho, Wendy shares that Iowa is known for corn and not potatoes. Also, there is the widespread belief that Iowa is generally flat, which is not the case. During her schooling at the Iowa State University, Wendy had spent a semester at the University of Oregon while partaking in a National Student Exchange Program and fell in love with the state. Upon completing her degree at Iowa, she moved to Oregon. Three key activities for visitors in Portland: First is tourism, which is too notable to pass up. Next is exploring the food scene, including restaurants and food carts or trucks, which are usually the starting point of the most well-known restaurants in Portland; an example would be a donut tour. The third is appreciating the proximity to other natural beautiful sites like the coast, mountains, and a country, all in different directions surrounding Portland, which gives ideas for various trips. Following her response to a job advert for a Marketing assistant in a Real Estate company with a branch in Portland, Wendy worked on teaching Realtors how to use their tools and create their websites; this became her passion and formed the foundation for what she does now. She then moved to Transnation Title, which closed down later on, after which she got a job with Chicago Title. Bill recommends the "https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UtZjhmjKpEI (Business Wars Podcast; Starbucks vs. Dunkin episode)" for listeners who are also coffee lovers like Wendy. Wendy explains the challenges of being a Service Marketer. Two types of relationships are built; the first is between herself and the client, and the second is the relationship she facilitates between the client and the escrow officer who helps close the deal. Another challenge is that most potential clients already have a Title company or even a favorite escrow officer, so she intentionally always leads with value to get...
Tune in as Storey's Acquiring Editor, Deb Burns, speaks with Meg Thacher about her book, Sky Gazing: A Guide to the Moon, Sun, Planets, Stars, Eclipses, and Constellations. In this episode, Thacher shares her passion for astronomy from how she got started (spoiler alert, an inspiring professor made all the difference!) to what it was like to write her first book, the beautifully illustrated Sky Gazing. She goes on to explain that astronomy acts as a "gateway science" for kids who are fascinated by mysterious black holes and the unimaginable size of the sun.
Ojai is celebrating this month, in however an abbreviated fashion, Ojai Pixie Tangerine Month. So Emily Thacher Ayala, whose family has been farming in the Ojai Valley for a century and a half, is the perfect guide to this sweet, petite fruit, which has become a key characteristic of Ojai. Emily talks about her family's rich history in the valley - her father's side included Sherman Day and Edward Thacher, founders of Thacher School and the Ojai Tennis Tournament, on her mother's side the Friend family, the pioneers who began farming here in the 1870s and still operate Friends Packing House. Her depth of knowledge about the land - its peculiarities, vulnerabilities and beauty - is peerless. We talk about Emily's circular journey out into the world and back, including a stint in Central America, her stewardship of the family legacy, the farmers market circuit, the challenges of citrus ranching during a pandemic and the future of farming in the Ojai Valley. Emily's entertaining anecdotes include bear encounters, the pixie motto contest (a non-winning entry went, "too delicious to throw at cars") and her son's surprise visit from famed cartoonist Sergio Aragones. We did not talk about the Ming Dynasty, Hudson's Bay Company or the comic stylings of Nate Barzgate. http://www.ojaipixies.com/

Today we'll meet Sheila Murphy. Sheila always wanted to be a lawyer. As Sheila approached her college years, she elected to attend Binghamton University. She completed her coursework early there, so she worked for a year before starting at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School. After earning her JD, she was ready to meet her early vocational goal. She was now an attorney. Sheila went to work for the firm of Thacher, Proffitt and Wood, and with much consternation, became a litigator for them. She had a fear of public speaking and was certain she didn't belong in the position, but she decided she had to give it a shot. To her surprise and relief, she became increasingly better at the work as time went on. Her successes gave her a new confidence and maturity, and she enjoyed her career at the firm until it was time for a change when she and her husband began their family. Thus, Sheila's first professional pivot came after the birth of her child. Though she loved her work, she found herself looking for another position that might be more accommodating to her family needs. She had established a sizable professional network, and she began searching out leads for an opportunity to take her career in the new direction she wanted. She found that opportunity at MetLife. There she worked again in litigation along with business advising and some oversight of regulatory attorneys. Her years there were both happy and fruitful as she once more gained great experience and learned from the work she did. It was during these years that Sheila had a realization and epiphany that made a huge difference to her career. Listen as she recounts to Amy what occurred and how that event caused her to assert herself in her work and thus move forward professionally. She spent many happy years there, but she began thinking about what she should do next. As she thought over her idea of a bold move, she began what she calls an “interview tour”. She networked with knowledgeable individuals to gain clarity and insight into her possibilities. She did a verbal needs assessment to see where her skills might best serve. Then she pondered the “what ifs”. “What if I decide to do this? How would I go about it?” She refined her list of possibilities and made the decision that she wanted to continue to work with other attorneys. She tested her business concepts on many of them and they gave her great feedback. Eventually she was ready to resign from MetLife and become her own boss with her own business. Her business now focuses on working with two groups. The first group is comprised of women attempting to gain control over their careers. She helps them find their way to the next level and/or develop their own book of business. The second group is made up of business professionals who are not lawyers. They gain guidance on climbing their own career ladders and navigating the corporate climate. In her new role as a career coach, consultant and advisor, she is helping professionals shortcut those hurdles she maneuvered. She works to help her clients find their own path to forging the careers that they deserve. Though her life remains full of challenges, she says her happiness is now “through the roof”. Topics in this episode: Methods for attracting clients to your business How to meticulously build career and business models How good networking strategies enhance a career How to plan for a successful outcome How self-evaluation is an important first step Why careful financial planning is essential before starting a business Links: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sheilamurphyfocusforward/ focus-forward-consulting.com

Despite his down-to-earth demeanor and genial wit, Tony Thacher, the farmer and erstwhile geologist, has a distinguished lineage. His grandfather helped start The Thacher School in the 1880s, and his wife, Anne Friend Thacher, is the daughter of legendary citrus rancher Elmer Friend and part of the historic family that were among the first to stake out claims in the Ojai Valley. We talk about the current state of agriculture, Berkeley's Free Speech Movement, water issues, community service, the future of Ojai and steelhead trout. Tony also tells a few tall tales (some which might true-ish), We did not talk about the Buffalo Bills' heart-breaking loss to the Chiefs in the AFC title game, Israeli irrigation technology or UFOs.

Kari connects Jeff to his mother, as they talk about his more private gift of songwriting, how this moment in the world is like a mirror and midlife crisis that can be good and force us to address superficialities and what our raison d'etre is, how he knew to follow his life path in his college years in Boston (and Warren Towers) with doors that open to other doors and feeling at home, what he listens to for grounding, the '80s with Level 42 and how Howard Jones' music was about positivity, and Rockapella's new music like "Lady Mine - Bach v. Beethoven."

The “KR” on our barn is a well-known landmark of old time Paso Robles. The Kentucky Ranch- our home, winery, vineyard and gardens was part of a 4,000 acre Spanish Land Grant until 1869 after which it became a thriving horse breeding operation. Our ranch includes the 1920’s KR barn, outbuildings, our home, barley fields and riparian habitat for deer, coyotes, bobcats, turkeys and the occasional mountain lion. The vineyard was planted in Spring of 2007, it consists of Zinfandel and Petite Sirah.Since 2004 Thacher Winery with the grasshopper label, has been hand crafting wines from superb vineyards found on the Westside of Paso Robles and in Southern Monterey County. Our boutique production of Rhone blends and Zinfandels demonstrate local subtleties and true westside terroir. Construction of the tasting room and 4600 square foot, solar powered winery was completed in 2008, just in time for our fourth harvest of about 33 tons of premium wine grapes.Visit Thacher Winery at https://www.winesoundtrack.com/cantine/thacher-winery
Illegal Airbnbs could pull up to 1,500 housing units from Portland each year despite a new city clampdown, according data from the website InsideAirbnb. Cornelius and his friend Thacher Schmid just published an investigative report in Portland Mercury about illegal Airbnbs and their impact on the Portland housing crisis. In this special edition podcast, Cornelius and Thacher talk about their story, about the data they used, and why Portlanders still love Airbnb even though most seem to know hosts can make the housing crisis worse. http://insideairbnb.com/portland/ https://www.portlandmercury.com/news/2018/10/11/23548145/illegal-airbnbs-could-take-1500-rentals-off-market/ https://www.pricedoutmovie.com/ https://www.facebook.com/PricedOutPDX https://twitter.com/pricedoutusa https://www.instagram.com/pricedoutmovie/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/priced-out-podcast/support
