A recent global survey conducted by Theirworld , a global children's charity organisation, has revealed that South Africa faces an urgent crisis in early childhood development. According to the report , 38% of South African primary school teachers believe most children are not developmentally ready when they start school and this places South Africa's children at a significant disadvantage compared to their international peers. Their world says the findings highlight the urgent need for investment in early childhood education to prepare children for the demands of the education system and future job market. Sir David Attenborough once said, “An understanding of the natural world is a source of not only great curiosity but great fulfilment.”And so, surely it is our responsibility to do everything within our power to create, nurture and maintain a planet that provides a home not just for us, but for all life on Earth? So why, here in the UK, is a deluge of untreated sewage being dumped by water companies into our rivers and along our coastlines?Last year alone, there were a whopping 372,533 sewage spills, over a period of 2.7 million hours. This is one of the BIGGEST environmental scandals of our time. Yet, as is always the case, it doesn't have to be this way. This is why today we are joining forces with Hugo Tagholm to bring to you a deep dive into the world of marine conservation and critique the scandals we're witnessing on our shorelines.Hugo served as Chief Exec of Surfers Against Sewage, one of the UK's leading marine conservation and campaigning charities that have been instrumental in campaigning for the introduction and enforcement of legislation that protects our seas from pollution. He also led partnerships at The Climate Coalition, and joined forces with Richard Haward's Oysters and the Good Law Project, with the aim of compelling the Government to rewrite its Storm Overflows Discharge Reduction Plan to impose much tighter deadlines on water companies to clean up their act.Tagholm has also served as Programme Director at Theirworld and is an esteemed TEDx speaker, columnist for Oceanographic Magazine, and avid surfer.Earlier this year, he was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science for his services to marine conservation by the University of Exeter and has recently become the Exec Director and Vice President at Oceana, the largest international advocacy organisation dedicated solely to ocean conservation. The crux of this wonderful conversation focuses on the majesty of our oceans, the tragedy of their decline and the urgency of change.Chatting with Hugo was an absolute pleasure and my hope is that this one inspires you into your own form of action and activism —because we can't change the world without changing ourselves. To celebrate the 100th episode of Better Angels on World Children's Day, Sarah handed over her hosting microphone to Andrew Jack, global education editor of the Financial Times, for a wide-ranging interview with her and her husband, Gordon Brown, about the state of global education.   Andrew asked Sarah and Gordon, the United Nations Special Envoy for Global Education, about their motivations for advocating for children's education and what actions world leaders need to take to give all children around the world a quality education.   “If we could become the first generation in history where every single child had an education and where instead of developing some of the potential of some of the children in some countries, we developed all the potential of all children in all countries, then that would, in my view, make the biggest difference to our prospects and possibilities as a world,” said Gordon.   Sarah reflects on her career as an activist and shares her insights from working with youth activists, displaced families and global movements for change during her 20 years as founder of the global children's charity Theirworld.

This year marks 20 years since Sarah and Gordon Brown lost their daughter Jennifer, who died ten days after being born seven weeks prematurely. In a search for answers, they founded the Jennifer Brown Research Laboratory in 2004, which looks into the causes and consequences of premature birth. Around 1 in 13 babies in the UK are born prematurely –before 37 weeks. Sarah is Chair of the charity Theirworld and tells Emma about the latest research. It's been over a year since Sarah Everard was adbucted, raped and murdered by a serving police officer, Wayne Couzens, who's now in prison for life. The vigil that followed in London followed to remember Sarah, ended up with clashes with the police and arrests. Now it's been reported that some police officers thought the event was an anti-police protest. The Evening Standard newspaper has printed what certain officers have told Westminster magistrates court this week. They say they faced resistance when they tried to break up the crowd, had feared being attacked, and were branded “murderers” by some people in the crowd. At the moment, six people are being prosecuted by Scotland Yard over the vigil. Jamie Klinger is one of the founders of Reclaim These Streets, which tried to organise the vigil. Psychologist and co-host of BBC podcast Bad People Dr Julia Shaw's new book Bi: The Hidden Culture, History and Science of Bisexuality combines her own experiences of being bisexual and her background in the psychological sciences to explore and celebrate a sexual identity she says remains marginalised and forgotten. It's been described as "one of the biggest medical scandals ever to hit this country". In 2017 surgeon Ian Paterson was jailed for 20 years after being found guilty of 17 counts of wounding with intent. Mr Paterson was diagnosing cancer when there wasn't any and cutting his patients open for no reason, performing unnecessary and damaging surgery. He also carried out unregulated "cleavage-sparing" mastectomies, in which breast tissue was left behind, meaning cancer returned in many of his patients. Ahead of a new ITV documentary being broadcast this weekend, Emma speaks to the whistleblower who first raised concerns about Ian Paterson – Mr Hemant Ingle, and one of Paterson's victim's Debbie Douglas, who is still campaigning for a change in the law to prevent anything like this from happening again.

Better Angels New Year Special Happy New Year! Welcome to the first Better Angels episode of 2018, the podcast for the activist spirit. As 2017 turned out to be a shade darker than the already gloomy 2016, people around the world are bracing for what comes next. High human costs of war, attacks and assaults on women, children, hospitals and schools, and the ever-growing gap between the haves and the have-nots. Yet where there is darkness, we can always find light. We can find the very best of humanity in individuals who offer hope and inspiration, through the generosity of their acts, both large and small. To start off 2018, Sarah Brown called out via social media for people to contribute their best actions of the year, the ones that highlight the ‘Better Angels’ of their nature. For the first podcast of 2018, we are sharing the stories of amazing people across the world and their inspiring acts.  You will hear from: Kiko, who has learnt to row and is aiming row solo across the Atlantic Ocean to raise money for a hospital and, importantly, empower other women. While strides have been made in equal opportunities for girls and women, there’s an unwritten code that holds still many girls back at an early age pretty much everywhere in the world.
