In 2022 and 2023, Children and Young People with Disability Australia – the national representative organisation for children and young people with disability – conducted 3 surveys of children and young people with disability, and their families and carers, about their experiences in early childhood education and school settings. The survey responses show that 29% of children in early childhood education and care settings and 70% of young people in school settings report being excluded from events and activities at school. As well as this, 28% in early childhood education and care settings and 65% in school settings reported experiencing bullying. To unpack this research in more detail, we're joined by Dr Catherine Smith from the University of Melbourne, who worked in partnership with Children and Young People with Disability Australia (or CYDA – that's C-Y-D-A, as you'll hear Catherine say during our discussion). We've podcasted about the Lake Powell Pipeline, so we thought, as the drought continues and water levels continue to drop, let's go have a look. We told our board about the idea and it turns out that board member Catherine Smith rafted the Colorado River through Glen Canyon as a teenager in 1955. We were so pleased that she insisted on coming along. We included David Petitt, a well-known photographer now painter, and of course, our producer and host Logan, his wife Angie, and our assistant producer Ben.The level when we took our trip in May was only 1/4 full at 3523 feet – just 33 feet above the minimum power pool of 3,490 feet, or where there's not enough water to run the power generators. Dead pool is 120 feet lower, at 3,370 feet. Because the lake dropped about 40 feet in 2021 they have been releasing 500,000 acre-feet from Flaming Gorge to delay that moment of truth. But the big picture is that Lake Powell is really only of value to generate power, tourist economy aside. So if it drops below minimum power pool, then evaporation and rock-saturation coefficients start to play in. If preserving water is the sole priority, why expose all this surface area and let it seep into the sandstone? It starts to look like better water sense to send as much water as possible to Lake Mead. It's an immense, critical set of decisions the water lords have to make in the face of the harshest drought in 1200 years, and due to climate change, looking like the new normal. Now suddenly the Glen Canyon Institute — premised on draining the lake and revitalizing the river and deemed “looney” by Utah Senator Orrin Hatch — is gaining prominence, with Director Eric Balken finding himself in interviews in the New Yorker. At the end of the episode, we interview him too so he can help us make sense of our observations of both beauty and tragedy inherent in Glen Canyon's re-emergence.As we explored the re-emerging canyon, we also looked for Ancestral Puebloan evidence. Having found little, we reached out to Erik Stanfield, an archaeologist with Navajo Nation. You'll his voice about halfway through the episode. Our trip begins with a long walk down temporary ramps as Bullfrog Marina continues to have to move deeper and deeper into the canyon as water vanishes.

What about the S and the G in ESG? In episode 191, you meet Catherine Smith, General Counsel & Company Secretary at Wah Kwong Maritime Transport Holdings Limited in Hongkong. We have a candid conversation about Environmental Social and Governance, which refers to the three key factors when measuring a business or company's sustainability and ethical impact. Catherine is calling for more ESG startups since there are so many things we need to do to fulfil the challenges we are facing. I asked Catherine why the interest in ESG reports has grown so much; she thinks it's because so many more stakeholders are reading them now. There is no way to hide. You do not want to miss out on listening to all the wisdom Catherine shares! Download and listen and discuss these issues with a friend or a peer. They are also welcome to listen to the Shipping Podcast, of course.

Travel writer, Catherine Smith, found her passion for solo travel by accident more than a decade ago. Since then, her adventures have brought her to New York City, Italy, New Zealand and beyond. Mostly importantly, these trips have allowed her to get to know herself more deeply and trust her intuition. People often assume travelling solo makes Catherine fearless, but she reminds us that she, like all of us, has fears. On each trip, she purposefully stretches and strengthens her “courage muscle”, allowing her to bring back more confidence, freedom and self-acceptance to her everyday life and relationships. Can you help answer the BIG questions? (spoiler: the answer is yes) ..... and you can do this from your sofa. Minimal effort required. So how do you help transform the world for people living with psoriasis in these very uncertain COVID-Y times? The easiest thing to do is help Prof. Catherine Smith and Dr. Satveer Mahil by answering a questionnaire. What!? I hear you - it sounds too easy right? Well this is the deal. They are trying to answer this huge question- How does COVID affect people with psoriasis? The problem is that the information they have so far is skewed. They see patients in their clinic... but that's it. They don't know you, and until I filled out their survey, they didn't know me either. It's impossible to answer big questions without big data. That means psoriasis stuff about you, and your kids (if they have psoriasis) and your nan (if she has psoriasis too) is hidden to researchers because these members of your family are often missed out when data is collected online. Can you help? Or are you worried about your data? If you're worried about your data then I totally get you. That's why the data you submit can be anonymised. Probably spelt wrong- but it does what it says on the tin. You will not be identifiable. Or you can be like me where you say "Heck YEAH! email me some more info when you have it!" because that's how I roll...plus I'm nosey as heck when it comes to psoriasis stuff and want to know what's going on. More than 14,000 New Zealand homes were flipped within six months of purchase during the last property market boom. But that represented less than 3 per cent of total sales, new research by OneRoof shows.National and Labour politicians blamed "flippers" for pushing up house prices, and introduced legislation to quash property speculation. But data published in today's OneRoof Property Report shows house-flipping in New Zealand was not as prevalent as popularly believed.Of the 647,133 homes sold between 2013 and 2018, OneRoof and its data partner Valocity identified 14,588 that were bought and then resold within six months. In Auckland, of the 193,698 properties sold between 2013 and 2018, 6631 (3.4 per cent) were flipped within six months. One Roof property writer Catherine Smith told Kate Hawkesby during that period just under 650,000 homes were sold."In a classic flipping situation, which is what developers, real estate agents would tell you, is within six months, there were less than 15,000 properties that were flipped over."She says they can't find any data that says speculators were one of the drivers of the market."Most astonishing thing I got was a little Treasury paper, which was a recommendation to the Minister, which said we don't have empirical evidence that this was happening'."Despite this, politicians blamed speculators for pushing up prices and brought in legislation to quash it.The research showed that, between 2013 and 2018, 25 per cent of residential sales (165,098) were bought and then resold within five years. The median holding period for houses in New Zealand since the year 2000 is 3.45 years, and 9 per cent of those resale properties were flipped with six months.According to the data, the "flip capital" of the country was not Auckland, but Wellington. Fourteen per cent of total resales (properties bought and resold within five years) in the capital between 2013 and 2018 were within six months. In Auckland, the figure was 12 per cent. Six-month flipping in Hamilton and Tauranga sat at the national average of 9 per cent.Valocity valuation director James Wilson said nationally, the average gain on resale properties was $155,000.In Auckland, where property values have risen 45 per cent since 2013, the difference between initial sale prices and the resale prices varied from 21 per cent in Franklin to 25 per cent in the Central City and 26 per cent in Waitakere. In Hamilton the difference was 22 per cent, and in Tauranga it was 21 per cent. The difference dropped to 14 per cent in Christchurch, 12 per cent in Invercargill and 11 per cent in Gisborne.Wilson said the data raised questions about the National Government's decision to introduce the bright test in 2015, which taxed gain on non-family homes bought and sold within two years. The policy targeted speculators and was extended to five years by Labour last year.Former Property Institute CEO and OneRoof property commentator Ashley Church said the bright line test was unnecessary as professional resellers already paid tax on their gains and investors were taxed on rental income."To label investors as 'speculators' is wrong," he said. "Property investors provide an important and tangible public service [as landlords] yet the Government seems to be doing everything it can to get investors out of the market and discouraging others from entering it."Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford said the Government needed responsible property investors who were committed to providing high quality, long-term service to tenants, rather than making a "quick buck"."A number of our policy changes have been designed to prevent a repeat of the destructive speculative frenzy that saw house prices double and the worst homelessness in generations."

Habit of Action: No electronics in the morning. Instead take time to get present and meditate. Nik's habit: Pat yourself on the back and celebrate the little victories. Greatest area of strength: The ability to talk to anyone and be comfortable in her own skin. Training for this area: “I'd really encourage them to push themselves outside of their comfort zone.” Be alone or go talk to a group of strangers. Book: The Alchemist - Paulo Coelho Web resource: Painted Picture Sooner not Later Live your list Contact: Twitter - @SNL_catherine Catherine@soonernotlater.com Words of wisdom: Listen after the end credits to hear the words of wisdom that Catherine teased at during the show.
I can get pretty passionate on today's topic. And that passion has even led to some “voice raising” at a casual friend gathering. Cuz one thing I won't back down on is the Gospel and sharing the good news with the whole world. We all are in need of a Savior. And no one sin is greater than another. Like Jesus defending the adulterous woman, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her” (John 8). After the men holding stones dispersed and Jesus dismissed the woman, asking her to sin no more, he said, “I am the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness but have the light of life.” As followers of Jesus we do not walk in darkness, but carry the light of life. So many are lost, wandering in darkness, not because they are worse than we are, but because have not been shown the Light and love of Jesus. In today's episode I interview Catherine Smith, Strip Church Event Coordinator. She shares about their ministry to women in strip clubs. AND tells listeners how to get involved in their new initiative, Bright Lights, Big Cities. One of my favorite parts of this episode is realizing the special love moms have to offer a broken world. I pray God speaks to you through our conversation and perhaps moves you to serve in this exciting way. What we talk about: The unbelievable story of how the XXXChurch.com got started “People are not expecting to meet with Jesus at a porn convention.” The need the XXXChurch saw that no one else was filling The vision and goal of StripChurch to invest & build relationships The launch of Bright Lights, Big Cities–what it is and what they need When the leaders training happens and what's involved What you could do to help a team, if you can't commit to training Why moms minister best to women in the sex industry–the power of a mother's love “Don't blame the dark for being dark. Blame the light for not shining in the dark.”-Craig Gross, Founder of XXXChurch.com The resources available through XXXChurch for those struggling with porn addiction: X3Groups–accountability groups for men & women iParent.tv to help parents navigate technology X3Watch filtering and accountability app The difference and call to holiness for those within the church, choosing to follow Christ “We are not for porn, we are for people.” Connect with Catherine: Catherine@xxxchurch.com Links mentioned: XXXChurch.com resources–where to start 100 cities included in the Bright lights, big cities initiative Bright Lights, Big Cities Training Online accountability for every device–X3watch.com iParent.tv helping parents navigate technology X3 Groups for accountability
