Sustainability Milestones: Adaptation and Resilience

Welcome back to Architecture 5 10 20! I'm your host, Guy Geier, Managing Partner of FXCollaborative Architects in New York. My guests for this podcast are pioneers and visionaries shaping the future of the built environment across various disciplines. Join me in exploring their remarkable journeys, discovering how they reach their current heights, and envisioning what lies ahead in the next 5, 10, and 20 years. Join me for this episode as I have an insightful conversation with Ilanah Judah, a former colleague of mine at FXCollaborative and now Americas Climate and Sustainability Leader at Arup. It has been so exciting to watch her grow into a major voice in climate resilience, and she brings a wealth of experience and clarity to a topic that is far too often misunderstood or oversimplified. Ilana unpacks what resilience really means in the context of the built environment and discusses why it's not just a checklist of add-ons. She explains how resilience differs from sustainability (even though they are deeply interconnected) and shares why thinking about resilience as an unbroken chain is so important for meaningful impact. Ilana and I talk through what a resilience journey can actually look like, from risk assessments and future scenarios to implementing and ongoing operations. She, in addition, reflects on how her career path shifted after Superstorm Sandy, why adaptation and emissions reduction need to be addressed together, and what is changing in how clients are thinking about climate risk today. If you are interested in how buildings and systems can actually prepare for (rather than just respond to) what is coming, then this one is definitely worth a listen. Ilana brings remarkable clarity to a topic that can easily get lost. Time stamps: [01:43] - Hear how Ilana's career in architecture evolved toward sustainability and resilience after witnessing Superstorm Sandy's devastation. [03:17] - A desire to understand resilience led Ilana to academia, consulting, and leadership at Arup. [06:46] - Ilana highlights the need for a shared definition of resilience. [08:57] - Ilana shares how she differentiates between sustainability and resilience. [12:31] - Ilana explains her thesis on adaptive mitigation. [13:34] - We discover that Ilana's resilience planning starts with risk assessments, aligning goals, and relocation if necessary. [16:35] - Developing a resilience plan requires prioritizing risks, budgeting, financing, and ensuring long-term maintenance. [18:49] - Hear about how Ilana helps investors assess climate risks. [21:15] - Ilana points to some of the benefits of innovative tech such as AI. [24:47] - Professionals need to go beyond codes and historical data to address future climate realities in design. [26:17] - Resilience is becoming more and more important to standards, with insurance and mortgage shifts possibly leading to major migration. [29:42] - Ilana argues that resilience demands thinking across scales and identifying vulnerabilities and challenges. In this episode, we dive into the importance and meaning of environmental and social justice across different regions. We hear from Social and Environmental Justice experts Erica Olesson, Sustainability Leader, Tonkin + Taylor in New Zealand, Scott Recker, Environmental Remediation Practice Leader at Antea Group USA, and Valentina Vieri, a Sustainability Specialist for HPC Italy. The group discusses strategies for achieving sustainable development, emphasizing the need for community engagement, regulatory compliance, and addressing vulnerable groups. ---------Guest Quotes“That term, environmental and social justice, is not one that we use very commonly in Australia and New Zealand where I've worked. We talk more about social license to operate, so it's a similar concept, perhaps a bit reversed. It's more about what the company needs to do for, what the organization needs to do for the community to be happy that they're there and to be making sure that they're responding to those community needs.” - Erica Olesson“So the term environmental justice has been in use in the U.S. for probably at least 40 years. And it's really been indoctrinated into legislation and regulation in the last 3 or 4 years. So, it has a very specific definition in the U.S. and what that really means is equal treatment of community, regardless of your race, color, national origin, your income, where you live, all of those things need to be treated equally. If we go to different parts of the world, and I work with my Inogen associates all over the planet, it means different things in different places.” - Scott Recker“Sustainability is, I think, a global vision of different topics, of different perspectives. And what we try to do is to integrate these perspectives together, these different points of view, and try to find a common solution that can bring values, not just for a company, a person, but for the environment, the people and the planet. So for everybody, this is what we try to do.” - Valentina Vieri---------Time Stamps00:00 Te Ara Oteata, or the Mount Messenger Bypass, case study (02:03) Roundtable conversation (02:22) Valentina's perspective on environmental and social justice(06:29) Scott's insights on environmental justice in the U.S.(10:55) Erica's view on social license to operate(14:17) Challenges and trends in environmental and social justice(31:47) Measuring impact and benefits---------Sponsor copyRethinking EHS is brought to you by the Inogen Alliance. Marianthe shares the courageous decision to embark on a two-year sabbatical with her husband, sailing from the UK to New Zealand, which was driven by their shared values of adventure, learning and sustainability. This sabbatical was not just a break from work but a deeply aligned step with her personal values and purpose, allowing her to engage in sustainability projects and community building on remote islands. Rather than feeling this time away from the office set her career back, Marianthe translated her experiences into roles more aligned to her values upon her return. In addition, Marianthe discusses empathy as a crucial tool to drive change, helping her bring others along on her journey and highlights the importance of senior sponsorship in driving successful projects, stating that having senior support is crucial for implementing change effectively. Send me a messageToday's friend of the pod is Rory Martin. Rory has a great title - Vice President of Group Sustainability for Frasers Property, based in Melbourne here in Australia. That is probably the least interesting thing about him though, and the life he's lived til now and the stories he reveals in this chat about his incredible life to date - the highs and the lows - reveal how he has come to be one of Australia's leading corporate sustainability thinkers and practitioners.Rory grew up in Ireland and trained as an architect, before curiosity got the better of him and he moved to Australia and then evolved his career into the sustainability field, where he's been awarded many recognitions and made even more valuable contributions to many areas of his and our shared professional lives - sustainable finance, climate risk and resilience, passive Haus and australia's terrible home building standards, biophilic design, carbon abatement and how to think about and build buildings that enhance human health and wellbeing. For over ten years Rory has had fingers in a lot of pies, and the achievements and awards he and the teams he has been a part of is recognition of the quality of his thinking, his actions and the person that he is.I didn't expect this conversation to go into just about every area we did, and Rory shares a remarkable, vulnerable and life changing experience from when he was 21 and travelling across the world from Ireland to Australia before becoming dangerously unwell in Thailand.I've known Rory for the best part of ten years and what he shares I didn't know about, and most others don't. This conversation is about the gifts of tragedy, the power of curiosity and the virtue of humility. There was so much that I enjoyed chatting to Rory about as we're about the same age and similar points in our career trajectory, and the ability to reflect upon and contemplate where the corporate sustainability movement and individual is at now, where it has come from and what may lie ahead is such a fascinating one for me. I was reminded that this work and the characteristics of the people who work in this space is part science but seemingly lots of magic too. To make sense of complexity, to build stories to influence and persuade, to constantly be learning, to be pushing the boundaries of what hasn't been done and the imagination involved in that - it's exciting to step back and realise my every day gets to exist in those realms and mindsets which I love and am grateful I found this profession, despite the challenges and disappointments it throws up on a near daily basis. So with Rory's experience of Guillain Barre syndrome and the rapid onset of paralysis it induced and the life he has lived since, and with the theme of meaning in mind, this quote from Victor Frankl seems apt “We can discover meaning in three ways; firstly, by doing a deed, secondly, by experiencing a value, and thirdly, by suffering. This was a special conversation, and I was moved by Rory's personal and professional reflections. I hope you are too.Today's show is delivered with Gilay Estate. In this episode, Craig Coulter and Sai Yadati from the EY Advanced Manufacturing and Mobility team, examine what industrial companies can do to accelerate their sustainability initiatives. As the urgency for carbon net zero mounts, industries are compelled to innovate and transform. The EY 2023 Sustainable Value Study reveals that the majority of advanced manufacturing and mobility (AM&M) companies are actively pursuing emission reductions, with a significant number targeting carbon neutrality and net zero within three decades. However, they face persistent challenges, including the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, inadequate energy infrastructure, geopolitical tensions over mineral resources, and a lack of high-quality environmental, social, and governance (ESG) data. In this installment of the Advanced Manufacturing and Mobility Business Minute podcast series, we hear from Craig Coulter, EY Global AM&M Strategy and Operations and Sustainability Leader, and Sai Yadati, EY Americas AM&M Sustainability Leader. They delve into the strategies industrial companies can adopt to meet their climate change goals, emphasizing the role of digital innovation, strategic partnerships and leadership. Coulter presents five key methods for harnessing technology to further sustainability, advocating for initiatives that extend beyond mere regulatory compliance. Both he and Yadati highlight the critical role of leadership in cultivating a culture that embraces innovation, risk-taking and change. Join us to learn how fostering collaboration between digital transformation and sustainability teams, investing in employee skills development and establishing strategic alliances can pave the way for companies to expedite their journey toward decarbonization. Key takeaways: Challenges such as energy infrastructure limitations, conflict minerals and the need for accurate ESG data are obstacles to reaching climate goals, despite progress and investments spurred by recent legislation. Digital tools are critical for energy transition, with examples showing significant reductions in emissions through smart energy management and the potential of virtual power purchase agreements for renewable energy sourcing. Leadership plays a key role in decarbonization by fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration, essential for maximizing digital technology benefits and achieving sustainability targets.

Today we're talking about the big topic of Sustainability within big business. Former Chief Sustainability & Social Impact Officer at McDonalds, Bob Langert, joins the show and shares his three decade long journey in making environmental change happen at one of the biggest organizations in the world. An environmental activist at heart, Bob shares how he was able to take a topic he cared deeply about but was low on the company priority list, and over time use his passion to make people notice and act. Sustainability started as Corporate Social Responsibility and Bob recalls how in the 1980's it was just starting to gain prominence and it took a long time for the topic to reach the mainstream status it has today in business. Companies need to be willing to change if they want to compete in a future environment 20 years from now which will look different to how it does today. Bob stresses the need for change agents within that; fewer people laying low and trying to stay out of trouble, more people who are open, patient and bring big ideas. Ultimately that passion and persistence helps the business, because as Bob says, “Businesses that are satisfied and content are going to die.”Bob does recognize that a key challenge in getting action on sustainability issues is trying to force it, either by being too emotional or pushing too hard. He describes how over time he achieved success by creating connections with people inside and outside the organization. These relationships rested on truthfulness, trust and empathy; putting yourself in others' shoes to see different ways of influencing them. That empathy allows you to see new allies, as often we assume people don't care, or will not be supportive, but they can surprise you. In fact some of your harshest critics can become your collaboration partners for change, or even your public advocates.Jo and Bob also discuss the need for companies to be more proactive and preemptive, but that often, that comes with little glory, as a hero in a crisis is easy to find, but credit for preventing a problem often never happens. But issues, like critics, will never stop coming, and Bob says that's a reality you need to accept, and a target you need to bear on your back, when part of a big organization that needs to make money (and there's nothing wrong with that).--To look outside, Bob reads a lot, particularly other perspectives of leadership and change through biographies. He also relies on travel to observe people across settings and cultures. He treats these as learning experiences that help him see things differently and promote a push beyond complacency, or accepting that 'things are the way they are'.--Bob Langert led McDonald's Corporate Social Responsibility & Sustainability efforts for more than twenty-five years before retiring in 2015. Currently, he provides corporate sustainability consulting through Mainstream Sustainability. Bob has been engaged in social responsibility issues at a global level since the late 1980s, leading environmental affairs, animal welfare, and Ronald McDonald Children's Charities' grants. He was appointed McDonald's first vice president to lead sustainability in 2006 with contributions spanning sustainable fish, coffee, palm oil, beef, packaging, extensive animal welfare progress, protecting the Amazon rainforest, nutrition strategy and CSR reporting, measurement, and accountability. His book about McDonald's sustainability journey, The Battle To Do Good: Inside McDonald's Sustainability Journey, was published in January 2019.Langert received his BA from Lewis University and his MBA from Northwestern University. In 2007, Langert was named as one of the 100 Most Influential in Business Ethics by Ethisphere. Follow Bob on

"You also need a theory of change. If you haven't understood what the big thing is you're trying to achieve, and you haven't understood how you are going to achieve that thing, then you have no theory of change and you're not going to achieve it."Bob Gordon told me that when he started out as Head of Sustainability with Nando's in the UK he didn't really have a theory of change. Bob's now Director of Zero Carbon Forum, and has a very clear theory of change to support the hospitality sector to reduce, and then eliminate, their carbon footprinIn this interview Bob shares some of his story on that journey, and offers some really solid advice for sustainability directors and managers who want to get results and make a real difference, even at a time when businesses are facing acute commercial pressures.Read the full show notes with links to resources at http://realise.earth/118

Other awards Brad and Tru Earth have received include B.C.'s CEO of the year, B.C.'s Top Exporter of the Year, and Best Eco-Friendly Household Product Company 2022.   To learn more about the TruEarthMovement, go to tru.earth.   In this episode we discuss: ●      The most sustainable innovation in laundry detergent (ever) ●      Why Tru Earth manufacturers in North America ●      Tru Earth's secret for attracting top talent ●      The recipe behind Tru Earth's record 4-year growth     Key Takeaways: When you create a product that aligns with consumer values, makes life easier, and fixes a market need for both consumers and retailers, magic happens. The market rewards smart solutions, and we need more smart solutions like Tru Earth's eco-strips across industries. What we measure shows what we value. Brad talked about the two main metrics that Tru Earth uses to measure success: 1) how many plastic bottles Tru Earth has eliminated from shelves, homes, and ultimately landfills; and 2) how many loads of laundry they've donated. These metrics have incredible power because they are meaningful. These metrics are a reason to get out of bed in the morning, a reason to innovate new solutions, and a reason for employees to engage deeply with work. What are you measuring at work? We sell our potential short when we set our sights too low. Focusing only on extrinsic metrics, like revenue and market share, is setting your sights too low. But when you tap into someone's intrinsic desire to make a difference, when your metrics show a deep meaning for why your company exists in the world, you unleash a force more powerful than anything found in a traditional business model. Recycling plastic is not going to solve our plastic waste problem. Only 5% of plastic is recycled, which means 95% of plastic—year after year—ends up in landfills,  polluting our waters, or being incinerated (which hurts our air).  This is a call to action for changemakers across industries to innovate solutions that eliminate plastic, especially single-use plastic. This type of innovation is not only important and meaningful, but it can also be incredibly profitable.    References: ●      Tru Earth ●      You can learn more about polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and its use in dishwashing detergent pods here. ●      The Greenpeace report on plastic recycling can be read here. ●      Ocean Wise ○      Shoreline Cleanup conservation program ●      entrepreneurship@UBC   Connect & Share: If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? Alec Crawford welcomed Scott to the Stay Podcast to discuss sustainability, technology, artificial intelligence, and their impact around the world. Scott has had a long career in the environmental field, beginning with working as an environmental scientist for a chemical company, to managing environmental issues globally, and finally joining Trane Technologies to help work in refrigerants. Scott recently attended Davos and his takeaway was that every sector of the economy needed to help move towards a better future with improved sustainable practices and reduced emissions is now at the table. The conversation between the interviewer and the sustainability leader revolves around the concept of sustainability and how it is integral to the success of the company. The sustainability leader defines sustainability as being about who a company wants to be, and how they can continuously improve. Train Technologies has two major facets: HVAC systems and transport refrigeration. The sustainability leader is responsible for leading sustainability efforts and running the Center for Energy Efficiency and Sustainability. Sustainability is not just about environmental efforts, but is also about social work, how employees are treated, and the expectations of suppliers. Sustainability is about making sure the company is positioned for success in the future. Scott, the Sustainability Officer at Trane Technologies, discussed his team's role in designing products for the future and how sustainability is now interwoven with the purpose of the company. He highlighted their program called Operation Possible which encourages employees to think of ways to solve big societal issues, such as increasing access to fresh food. He also discussed his interactions with the CEO and the board, emphasizing that for companies that see sustainability as their business, the CEO, board, and leadership team are fully engaged on all sustainability efforts on a daily basis. Trane Technologies is serious about its commitments to reduce emissions, increase diversity and provide opportunity for all. These commitments are attached to the CEO and manager's compensation, showing how serious the company is. The board has also readjusted expectations, linking progress to ESG issues. The company has set leading commitments around gender parity, investing in STEM education and allowing employees to volunteer in their local communities. We speak about the importance of a strong core and a light touch and the partnership with the animal that is so collaborative and satisfying.  We talk about the innate characteristics of different horses and some of their limitations and how communicating even through a different language can yield such results.  There is a natural parallel here to stewardship and engagement as a light touch but strong core conviction is so important there too.  There is a need to be iterative, responsive and to recognize limitations there too when dealing with companies, but equally to try to speak the same language. We turn then to another recent trip Christine took, on an Idaho cattle drive, where we learned about regenerative agriculture and the adaptive grazing techniques that is restoring agricultural land there. Finally we hear about a corporate initiative that Christine has worked on, in which the outside interests and passions of a group of colleagues are collated in order to promote inclusion, better team building and better mutual understanding. Not unlike this podcast series in fact.

10 Minutes to a Better Building with Boland

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 21, 2022 11:37

Julie Wolfington, Energy and Sustainability Leader at Boland, made her third appearance on 10 Minutes to a Better Building to talk about sustainability's essential issues in building management. For years building practices used more of the earth's resources than returned to the environment. That practice is not sustainable, and companies recognize things need to change. So how does a business know if it's sustainable, and how do they measure it? “The concept of sustainability refers to three main pillars,” Wolfington said. “The environment, which is the pillar we mostly think about, but also there's the social pillar, and the economic pillar.” For this discussion, Wolfington focused on the environmental aspects of sustainability. In terms of the environment, one way to measure the sustainability of a business is through the emissions output. Certain greenhouse gases, such as those emitted from a car or refrigerants, can devastatingly affect the environment. “Greenhouse gasses are measured by their capacity to store the sun's heat,” Wolfington said. “This is referred to as its global-warming potential or GWP.” These measurements translate to numbers that help determine how dangerous a particular gas emissions output is for the environment. Wolfington used the CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) scale to demonstrate how these measurements work. For example, one molecule of methane has the same heat storage capacity as 74 molecules of CO2. So, while CO2 may be the most prevalent greenhouse gas, some of these other gases could prove more harmful to the environment, and reducing those emissions is a critical step towards sustainability. Wolfington said Boland works closely with their customers to help them meet their sustainability goals and find ways to reduce those emissions in their buildings.

Dairy has long been an agricultural leader in efforts to enhance sustainability and combat climate change, said Robert Bonnie, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Under Secretary of Agriculture for Farm Production and Conservation.Even during times when farmers had questions about how climate policy was evolving, “Dairy stayed engaged, and continued to look for ways to, advance opportunities for, for producers,” Bonnie said. “That is notable and really important.”Bonnie in the podcast explains USDA's Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities initiative that it rolled out last month, as well as how climate-smart agriculture programs may evolve and expand. He also notes that the farmer signup deadline for the Dairy Margin Coverage Program ends March 25, encouraging dairy producers to participate.  “One of the things USDA is really interested in, is making sure we have better data to make that case, to drive a narrative that demonstrates that agriculture can be part of a solution that it already is, that has already done things, and that there's more to do and that agriculture is engaged,” he said. “I think driving that narrative to the broader public is really important.”

And, if the one thing that ties building owners of different types together is the desire to make their buildings better, Boland's mission is to help them achieve that mission.“The recipe to a better building is different for each of our clients,” Wolfington said. “For example, if you're a commercial real estate company and you want to flip your building next month, your better building is one that costs you the very least amount of money right now. So, your recipe might include a box of band-aids and some duct tape. Suppose you're a university, and you're going to be around for many, many years, and you own your buildings. In that case, your recipe for a better building will probably include energy efficiency upgrades that will lower the lifecycle costs of your buildings.”How does energy efficiency factor into making a better building?“When a building is energy efficient, the building owner's saving money,” Wolfington said. “The building is running better. If it's energy-efficient, that means it's tuned well, probably more comfortable for the occupants, the building is marketable, and it's the right thing to do.”There are a few critical steps to ensuring the desire for a better building is achievable. Wolfington said any building improvement project must align with business goals and consider all internal and external factors to be a success. And, once the goals and factors are assessed and aligned, a plan to make the building better should follow.
