In Episode 168 of the Not Your Average Autism Mom Podcast, host Shannon Urquiola takes listeners on a fascinating journey into the intricate world of the autistic brain. The episode begins by unraveling the consequences of overload – impaired processing, deteriorating levels of cognition, and the accumulation of stress chemicals that lead to physical pain and panic. Communication becomes a challenge, with language skills weakening, and attempts to reason often exacerbating the overwhelm. The heightened senses of autistic individuals add an extra layer to this complex experience. Shannon then introduces the concept of the brain as a circuit, illustrating the relationships between the brain stem, limbic system (emotion center), and frontal cortex (thinking center). The metaphorical racecar encounters a double whammy as poor filtering systems bombard the Limbic System with intense stimulation, while weak connections with the frontal cortex render thinking centers unable to control emotional floods. This dynamic often results in strong emotional reactions. The explanation of how these dynamics contribute to meltdowns, where processing, thinking, and problem-solving skills fall apart, provides valuable insights into the challenges faced by autistic individuals. She explores shutdown as a protective mechanism when the brain is overwhelmed. Gradual exposure to stress may lead to a shutdown, where one or more senses close down, and the individual becomes lethargic and unresponsive. Unfortunately, this defensive response is often misread as daydreaming or noncompliance, leading to increased prompting and potential meltdowns. Listeners are encouraged to embrace a deeper understanding of the autistic experience, recognizing that the challenges are rooted in brain-wiring rather than intentional behavior. Have you guys heard of VIVEK RASHAMEY? He is running for president, but I think he's actually a white hat. Because he's has to know that TRUMP/White hats are leading by a landslide. But either way, if you haven't heard him, you need to go and listen to him because he's SLICING/DICING with the truth, tearing up the media- telling them off, as well as the Deep State, confronting the attack on Christians. So if this guy does nothing else but to get the truth out there to Americans- HE'S DOING HIS JOB! Even a better job than the fake media/fake prophets in church. Because the fake church is so offended that they don't know their head from a hole in the wall. So they and the FAKE media (even on social media) are desperately trying to shut down the TRUTHERS! Because they know an uprising is coming! AN UPRISING OF TRUTH! VisionI saw this lens and its edges were blackened, dirty, matter of fact the entire lens was dirty, you could see light when there was light around, but people without a proper lens COULD NOT see in the dark. Then I began to watch & see a city full of darkness, and there were people walking around with these lenses around them, but I knew they were Christian. But then even when the day came, they could see a little better, but could not see at night, or through the darkness the way in which they were to go.Then I saw myself traveling through a book tunnel into the Library of one of God's palaces. Raising a child on the autism spectrum is not a linear journey and it's by far, not easy. I think that one of the most challenging aspects of raising a child on the autism spectrum is the constant search for what works. It's a topic that many of us have faced and continue to wrestle with – those moments when we feel like we're on the edge when the challenges of raising a child on the spectrum seem overwhelming. It's the feeling of wanting things to be easier, even if just for a moment. Maybe you tell yourself, "I've tried everything, I've done it all, and nothing is working." Sound familiar? Something that many of us experience when raising a child on the spectrum is the feeling of defeat when our child isn't making progress, or perhaps they're experiencing regression in their skills. In this episode, I share why is it unhelpful to buy into this "nothing is working" narrative. When it feels like progress is stagnant or there's regression, it's essential to take a step back and assess the situation. As parents, our role is to support, encourage, and believe in what is possible for our children. Embrace their uniqueness and celebrate the progress they make, no matter how small it may seem. Let's embrace the quirks, the challenges, and the extraordinary love that defines our lives. After all, it's in these shared experiences that we find strength, compassion, and the reassurance that we're part of a community that truly understands. Together, we can overcome challenges and create a brighter future for our families. The path of being an autism mom is a unique and often challenging one. It's a journey that begins with a diagnosis, then often becoming consumed with confusion, fear, and uncertainty. Many of us start this journey feeling overwhelmed by the unknown that lies ahead. We fear the unknown. We fear for our child's future, their well-being, and our ability to navigate this complex world we weren't prepared for. In this episode, I speak to your fears, share some examples and scenarios, and, above all, provide you with hope and encouragement because I firmly believe that you are absolutely meant to be your child's mom. When our child is diagnosed with autism, it can feel like we've been thrown into a world where nothing is familiar. Imagine for a moment that your child is like a puzzle, and this diagnosis is the first piece. It may not make sense right away, but as you gather more pieces along the journey, the picture becomes clearer. Guilt is a constant companion for many of us. Autism is not anyone's fault, and perfection is an unrealistic standard. You are doing the best you can, and your love and commitment are what truly matter. Being an autism mom is a remarkable, transformative journey. It will challenge you, test your limits and for sure your patience and forgiveness many many times, and it will change you in profound ways. But it will also fill your life with love, strength, and purpose beyond measure. Asking "Why" is a natural response to life's challenges, a way to make sense of our experiences. But there are a few reasons why asking "Why" may not be as helpful as we think. Asking why is really just us searching for insight, right? We are trying to make sense of what we think are our negative experiences in life. But here's the thing - we can't always know or figure out the reasons why things outside of our control happen. So, what's the alternative to constantly asking "Why"? What can you do when those "Why" questions seem to be consuming you? Join me in this episode as I share strategies and examples for moving past the "Why" and regaining a sense of control and purpose in your life. Individuals on the spectrum have what we can describe as different brain wiring. Their neurological connections between various brain centers are not as strong, which makes it challenging for them to process multiple pieces of information rapidly. This can make navigating our fast-paced world incredibly exhausting and difficult for them. Neurotypical people like you and me can effortlessly filter out around 80% of information that's not relevant to the task at hand. We focus on what's important. This filtering mechanism allows us to quickly process information despite this fast-paced world. We immediately and subconsciously filter out all the information irrelevant to that objective. For some of our kids, this might be only a mild problem, but for others, this is severely disabling, making the world very confusing and overwhelming. It's essential to be patient, give extra time to process and respond, and above all, be proactive to provide them with tools and strategies that work for them. Today's episode is all about a topic that's near and dear to my heart - the guilt that often accompanies us on this incredible journey of parenting that we weren't prepared for. When you are parenting a child with autism, this journey may take on unique dimensions. Guilt tends to creep in when we dwell on our perceived shortcomings. It can manifest in various ways: We all make mistakes, but sometimes, we dwell on them for too long and beat ourselves up for not being perfect. I'm not doing enough, taking time for myself is selfish, comparing your child's progress, self-blame, and constantly second-guessing your choices. Whether your child is neurotypical or on the spectrum, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to being a perfect parent. We all have moments when we wish we had handled a situation differently or said something else. The key is to recognize that these moments don't define us as parents. Let's embrace the quirks, the challenges, and the extraordinary love that defines our lives. After all, it's in these shared experiences that we find strength, compassion, and the reassurance that we're part of a community that truly understands. Free yourself of self-limiting beliefs. Your challenge is to entertain beliefs that that are self-nurturing. I know that beliefs can drive behavior. Shine your positive light into the world. Entertain ideas that are in line with who you truly are. Cultivate and nurture your talents. Be confident because you know your strengths. Choose to believe in yourself, even during challenging times. Your self-esteem will thank you. #MondayMindset My dream is to make sure this young girl, 8 years old, my granddaughter, grows up to be a strong confident woman that shines her light into the world with so much self esteem that it empowers other women to do the same. Can I let you in on something? A LOT of people I know struggle with low self-esteem. And it's really sad. They don't love themselves. They feel unworthy, and they go through life with a cloud hanging over their head. They really don't like anything about themselves. Is this you? Do you feel the same way? I put together something that I think can REALLY help you. It's called: The 5 Day Self-Esteem Challenge Reserve your spot: http://bit.ly/IMALLINSELFESTEEM It's a totally FREE 5 day challenge that will help significantly grow in self-esteem. One of the greatest gifts God has given us is the gift of time. The first commandment that God gave Moses was the institution of the Biblical calendar. [Exodus 12:1-2 RSV] "1 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, 2 "This month shall be for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you." When the Israelites were enslaved to Pharaoh, their time did not belong to them. As slaves, every day was the same without hope, creativity, and a future. When God entrusted the Jews with the gift of time, He required that they sanctify time by making it holy. They were given the command to infuse the world with holiness and the fulfillment of the will of God in the earth. Just as the moon illuminates the night sky, the light of the Word of God illuminates the darkness in the world. In the Scroll of Esther, we see the Rippling Effect of Time. Esther's destiny defining moment took place when the king's edict went out to annihilate the Jews throughout the Persian empire. [Esther 4:13-14 RSV] "13 Then Mor'decai told them to return answer to Esther, "Think not that in the king's palace you will escape any more than all the other Jews. 14 For if you keep silence at such a time as this, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another quarter, but you and your father's house will perish. And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?"" Esther had a choice to make. Was she going to remain silent or was she going to cause a Rippling Effect of Time? Everyone one of us has to make a Rippling Effect of Time from time to time. The decision Esther had to make was not an easy decision. God was going to bring deliverance to the Jews either through Esther or someone else. Like all of us, Esther had free-will and she had a choice to make. What happens when you place your hands into water? It causes ripples in the water. What happens when you make choices? It causes ripples in time. The Scroll of Esther is a scroll about the Rippling Effect of Time. Join us for “The Rippling Effect of Time” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/destined4torah/support
