God sees your pain, but more importantly He sees your way out: the path to healing and transformation. See as He does. Transcript: There's somebody in here tonight you have a broken heart God wants you to give that to him right now you're living in such futility that you're never going to move until you give him that broken heart much damage has been done to my body as a whole the hearts have been shattered the hearts have been pierced to the very core but I am trying to get you to give you my heart, give me your heart. I am trying to get you to get out of yourself. Lay it all at the altar. Allow me to be the one who loves you totally and completely. You are already whole, but the enemy is trying to make you believe that is not true. My Son's sacrifice was not for nothing. His love He came that you might be set free his love was shed abroad on that cross my heart weeps for you tonight because you hold on to something that's broken; when I'm trying to make all things new.  I know. I know the pain. I know the shame, the degradation. Don't hold on to it. It's done its over with. Move into the newness of this life. Move into the bright light that I am shining upon each and every one of you here this night. You're weeping for all the wrong reasons. You're weeping over past failures that you can't change. You're weeping for those who you lost. You can't get them back. Weep no more my children, but rejoice in me. If you will just give me that broken heart this night, I promise what lies in front of you is so much greater than what you leave here this night. The deepness of who I am will come forth within you. It will bring you to a place that the enemy cannot touch you. I love you with an everlasting love. Children of Zion, I say unto you give me all the brokenness that is within I really do have a marvelous future standing right before you I'm waiting on you when are you going to relent and sell out to me.  Yes, I gave Adam a wife because I know you need companionship, but first of all, I want you to become intimate with me and be satisfied with me, and then I will give you every desire of your heart. Sometimes you act like spoiled little brats and you want your own way when I'm saying my way is much better. Lay it all down. Lay it all down. Give it to me right now and don't pick it back up again. When you falter is when the enemy comes in like a mighty rushing wind and knocks you off your feet again and then you have to regroup. Do not falter this night but just give it all to me. One hundred percent. You will blossom. You will blossom in the desert places, you will come to full bloom and you will want no more. The blessings are there. The giftings are there. I'm waiting on you. Are you ready to or your arm is wide open to receive all that I have for you. It might not be as you pictured in most times it won't be, but what I have for you is so great and so powerful. Tonight, I'm asking you to grow in my grace, grow in my glory and grow in my long suffering. You can only do that as you give me that shattered heart. I don't want to repair your heart. I want to give you a brand new heart. Are you able to receive that tonight? Are you able to rejoice even in your sufferings? Good questions. Do you have the correct answers?  I am brooding over you children taking my freshness my restorative powers and setting you in the direction in the path that I have established for you I am giving you an understanding of my love for you and with that love you will find your true purpose you will take that and you will go into the highways and the byways for me and take the deepness of who I am. I have brought selective judgments in different regions and different places. Trying to prick the hearts and cause them to see that I am God. There will be many more of these types of events that will take place in the short days ahead I do not want you to be dismayed by this I want you to understand that it is me there is much wickedness there is much darkness in this land and I am uprooting every bit of it nothing will be hidden nothing will be covered over because I am bringing the exposure that needs to take place.  As I am doing this, you will feel an increase in my glory. You will feel an increase in my love. All of you will have compassion for them and be ready to minister to them when they come through. This is just the beginning of the great and marvelous move that I have promised you would be taking place. I have so many that are going to come to the footstool that I'm usually to leave them and teach them and show them of my ways. I want you to fully understand that everything that you've been through has not been for nothing. It has been for this hour, for this moment in history.  All of you have stories that have been written in many books and as we approach the darkest of the darkest hours, your lights will shine bright and your lights will reflect Me to the people don't hold back don't resist let the anointing that I place inside of you come to the forefront. I tell you children you are worthy. You are worthy because My son has made you worthy. You are worthy because I handpicked you, and you agreed with me before you left having to come down here in this time period and do these works. You will see your families come in you will see them come to know me. I know the enemy has been using their lack of understanding to torment you. I know the enemy has tried to separate and divide but I am building And I am causing families to be families. I am causing families to love one another and as I build this in the kingdom, it will spread. My love is forever and it goes from everlasting to everlasting and children you must know that my love is inside of you doing the works that I have foreordained it to be doing.

Are geniuses real? The neuroscience and myths of visionaries | Big Think

Revolutionary ideas and culture-shifting inventions are often credited to specific individuals, but how often do these "geniuses" actually operate in creative silos? Tim Sanders, former chief strategy officer at Yahoo, argues that there are three myths getting in the way of innovative ideas and productive collaborations: the myths of the expert, the eureka moment, and the "lone inventor." More than an innate quality reserved for an elite group, neuroscientist Heather Berlin and neurobiologist Joy Hirsch explain how creativity looks in the brain, and how given opportunity, resources, and attitude, we can all be like Bach, Beethoven, and Steve Jobs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRANSCRIPT: -There is no such thing as a lone inventor. We want to be as empowered as Ayn Rand. We want to think that we are the fountainhead, so this is how we tell the story. But until you believe that genius is a team sport, you will never give up control. - It's not just about collecting a bunch of data and knowing a lot of facts, but it's making these novel connections between ideas. - I think all of us as humans are sort of endowed with the need to make things better. Genius is just an extreme version of that but it represents us as humans in a very fundamental way. TIM SANDERS: There are myths of creativity and these myths are usually propagated by people that have romantic notions about heroes, romantic notions about eureka moments. And these myths of creativity keep people from collaborating and it causes them to be a lone wolf. And the research says it causes them to fail. So let me talk a little bit about those myths of creativity. In the world of sales and marketing, I battle against three myths. Myth number one, the lone inventor. This is very dangerous because there is no such thing as a lone inventor. As a matter of fact, there's a lot of historical research that has debunked Einstein. Specifically in terms of inventions, Henry Ford, not a lone inventor. Classic example, Thomas Edison. In the invention community, Thomas Edison is a brand. It stands for 14 people. Yes, there was a figurehead named Thomas Edison. His name is on 10,000 patents. He did not invent a single thing. He marshaled people together and knew how to spot innovations and put people together like, a creative soup, if you will. Here's a classic example, Steve Jobs, you ask the average person, say a millennial who uses a lot of Apple technology, "Who's one of the greatest inventors of our time?" They'll say Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs once said, "I never created anything. "All I did was notice patterns "and put people together to finish projects." So think about it. If he doesn't have Wozniak, there is no original Apple, right? If he doesn't have Ive, there is no iPod. If he doesn't have Tony Fiddel, there is no iPhone. And the list goes on and on. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a challenging condition, but the good news is that it's highly treatable. The key to effective management and recovery lies in understanding the condition, embracing the right treatment approaches, and adopting a supportive mindset. This article distills essential guidance and expert insights, aiming to empower those affected by OCD with knowledge and strategies for their treatment journey. YOU ARE BRAVE FOR STARTING OCD TREATMENT Taking the first step towards seeking help for OCD is a significant and brave decision. Acknowledging the courage it takes to confront one's fears and commit to treatment is crucial. Remember, showing up for therapy or seeking help is a commendable act of bravery. YOU CAN GET BETTER WITH OCD TREATMENT OCD treatment, particularly through methods like Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), has shown considerable success. These evidence-based approaches are supported by extensive research, indicating significant potential for individuals to reclaim their lives from OCD's grasp. The path may not lead to a complete eradication of symptoms, but substantial improvement and regained control over one's life are highly achievable. OCD TREATMENT IS NOT TALK THERAPY OCD therapy extends beyond the realms of conventional talk therapy, involving specific exercises, homework, and practical worksheets designed to confront and manage OCD symptoms directly. These tools are integral to the treatment process, allowing individuals to actively engage with their treatment both within and outside therapy sessions. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS “BAD” THOUGHTS A pivotal aspect of OCD treatment involves changing how individuals perceive their thoughts and their control over them. It's essential to recognize that thoughts, regardless of their nature, do not define a person. Attempting to control or suppress thoughts often exacerbates them, which is why therapy focuses on techniques that allow individuals to accept their thoughts without judgment and reduce their impact. YOU CAN NOT CONTROL YOUR THOUGHTS, BUT YOU CAN CONTROL YOUR BEHAVIORS You will have intrusive thoughts and feelings. This is a part of being human, and it is not in your control. However, you can learn to pivot and change your reactions to these intrusive thoughts, feelings, sensations, urges, and images.  YOU HAVE MANY OCD TREATMENT OPTIONS While medication can be a valuable part of OCD treatment, particularly when combined with therapy, it's not mandatory. Decisions regarding medication should be made based on personal circumstances, preferences, and professional advice, acknowledging that progress is still possible without it. In addition to ERP and CBT, other therapies such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness, and self-compassion practices have emerged as beneficial complements to OCD treatment. These approaches can offer additional strategies to cope with symptoms and improve overall well-being. The accessibility of OCD treatment has expanded significantly with the advent of online therapy and self-led courses. These digital resources provide valuable support, particularly for those unable to access traditional therapy, enabling individuals to engage with treatment tools and strategies remotely. For those without access to a therapist, self-led OCD courses and resources can offer guidance and structure. Engaging with these materials can empower individuals to take active steps towards managing their OCD, underscoring the importance of self-directed learning in the recovery process. TREATMENT WILL NEVER INVOLVE YOU DOING THINGS YOU DO NOT WANT TO DO I am usually very clear with my patients. Here are some key points I share I will never ask you to do something I do not want you to do I will never ask you to do something that I myself would not do  I will never ask you to do something that goes against your values. RECOVERY IS NOT LINEAR Recovery from OCD is not a linear process; it involves ups and downs, successes and setbacks. Embracing discomfort and challenges as part of the journey is essential. Adopting a mindset that views discomfort as an opportunity for growth can greatly enhance one's resilience and progress in treatment. There will be good days and hard days. This is normal for OCD recovery.  There will be days when you feel like you are making no progress, but you are. Keep going at it and be as gentle as you can SETTING CLEAR TREATMENT GOALS Clarifying treatment goals is crucial for a focused and effective therapy experience. Whether it's reducing compulsions, living according to one's values, or tackling specific fears, clear goals provide direction and motivation throughout the treatment process. BE HONEST WITH YOUR THERAPIST The success of OCD treatment is significantly influenced by the honesty and openness of the individual undergoing therapy. Without reservation, sharing one's thoughts, fears, and experiences allows for more tailored and effective therapeutic interventions. IT IS A BEAUTIFUL DAY TO DO HARD THINGS.  No question. You can do hard things!  OCD is a complex but treatable condition. By understanding the essentials of effective treatment, including the importance of evidence-based therapies, the role of mindset, and the value of self-directed learning, individuals can embark on a journey towards recovery with confidence. Remember, every step taken towards confronting OCD is a step towards reclaiming control over one's life and living according to one's values and aspirations. TRANSCRIPT There is so much bad advice out there about OCD treatment. So today, I wanted to share with you the 11 things I specifically tell my patients on their first day of OCD therapy.  Hello, my name is Kimberley Quinlan. I'm an OCD specialist. I specialize in cognitive behavioral therapy, and I have helped hundreds of people with OCD over the course of the 10, 15 years I have been in practice.  Now, whether you have an OCD therapist or not, my goal is to help you feel confident and feel prepared when addressing your OCD treatment and symptoms, whether you have an OCD therapist or not. That is the big goal here at CBTSchool.com and Your Anxiety Toolkit podcast.  Make sure you stick around until the end because I will also be sharing specific things that you can remember if you don't have a therapist, because I know a lot of you don't. And I'll be sharing what you need to know so that you don't feel like you're doing it alone.  Now, if you're watching this here on YouTube, or you follow me on social media at Your Anxiety Toolkit, let me know if there's anything I've missed or anything that you were told on your first session that was particularly helpful, because I'm sure your knowledge can help someone else or another person with OCD who is in need of support and care and advice. So let's go. Here are the 11 things that I tell my patients on their first day of OCD therapy. Number one, I congratulate them for showing up, because showing up for OCD treatment is probably one of the most brave things you can do. I really make sure I validate them that this is scary, and I'm really glad they're here. And I'm pretty impressed with the fact that they showed up, even though it's scary.  The second thing I tell them is that OCD treatment is successful. You can come a long way and make massive changes in your life by going through the steps of OCD treatment, showing up, being willing to take a look at what's going on in your life, and making appropriate changes so that you can get your life back, do things you want to do, spend more time with your family, your friends, the things you love to do, like hobbies, and that OCD treatment can be very effective. We're very lucky that OCD is a very treatable condition. It doesn't mean it'll go away completely, but you can have absolute success in getting your life back.  Now, one thing to know here is, how do we know this? Well, OCD treatment research and OCD treatment articles. If you go onto Google Scholar, you will find a lot of articles that show a meta-analysis of the OCD treatments available, where it shows that ERP and cognitive behavioral therapy are the gold standard of treatment. And using a meta-analysis, that basically means that they've surveyed all of the large, well-done research articles and found which one shows the most results and shows that they have the most repeated results over periods of time. And that's why it is so important that you do follow the research because there is a lot of bad information out there, absolutely.  Now, the third thing I tell my patients on their first day of therapy is that OCD treatment is not talk therapy. It's not just talking, that it requires OCD therapy exercises and homework and lots of worksheets. I have a packet that we give our patients at the center that I own in Calabasas, California. Everyone gets a welcome manual. And in the welcome manual, it's got worksheets on identifying obsessions and compulsions. It's got mindfulness worksheets. It's got logging worksheets. And I will send you home with those to do for homework. You'll come back. Let me know what worked, what didn't work, what was helpful, what wasn't. And you will be doing a lot of this work on your own.  Now, again, as I mentioned at the beginning, if you do not have access to OCD therapy or you don't have the resources to get that, we have an online course called ERP School. It is a course specifically for people with OCD, where I walk you through the specific steps that I take my patients through. And all of those worksheets are there. They have worksheets on identifying your obsessions, identifying your compulsions, mindfulness, self-compassion worksheets, things that can remind you and prompt you in the direction of setting up a plan so that you can get moving and make the steps on your own. The fourth thing that you need to know on the first day of your therapy is that there is no such thing as bad thoughts. Let's just sit with that for a second. There is no such thing as bad thoughts. Your thoughts do not define you, nor do your behaviors, that you might have these thoughts that you think are going to really freak you out. You might have this idea, these thoughts, these intrusive, repetitive, scary thoughts, and you might think, “Well, I can't even tell Kimberley about them yet.” I will often tell my patients like there is nothing these walls haven't heard, and you probably won't shock me because I haven't been shocked in many, many, many years working as an OCD therapist. I've heard it all. I've heard the most, what people perceive as the grossest thoughts. It's a normal part of the work that we do. And your thoughts are neither good nor bad and they do not define you. And I really make that point made because, as we move forward, I want you to know that I've seen a lot of cases and that “your thoughts aren't special” in that they're not something that I would be alarmed by.  The fifth thing that I would tell my patients is that you cannot control your thoughts. And I bet you believe it because you've probably tried over and over again, and all you found is the more you try and control it, the more thoughts you have. The more you try to suppress your thoughts, the more thoughts you have. There are, as we've already discussed, OCD treatment options that will really solidify this concept. Now, the most important one is exposure and response prevention, which is the type of treatment that we use for OCD and is the type of treatment that all of those research articles I discussed before show and direct to as a really successful treatment for OCD.  Now, in addition, there are other OCD treatment options. One of those treatment options is OCD treatment with medication. Now, again, when you do that meta-analysis, we have found that a combination of CBT and ERP with medication is the most successful. Now, that doesn't mean you have to take medication, though. I'm never going to tell my patients that they have to take medication.  So we can have OCD treatment with medication. We can have OCD treatment without medication. In fact, some of my most difficult cases, the clients, for medical reasons or for personal values reasons, chose not to go on medication. You can still get better. It might make it a little more difficult. You may want to speak with your therapist, or if you're doing this alone, you might need to put in a little extra homework, have a team of support, and people who are really there holding you accountable. Absolutely. But medication is another treatment option that you may want to consider as you move through this process. Now there are also new treatments for OCD recovery. They might include acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness practices, self-compassion. We even have some research around dialectical behavioral therapy as other OCD treatment interventions. I will be implementing those as we go, depending on what roadblocks show up. And again, if you're doing this on your own, there are amazing resources that can also help you, and I'll share about those here in a bit. Again, as we've talked about, there is also OCD treatment online. Since COVID-19, we've done a lot of growing in terms of being able to utilize CBT via the internet, via our computers, via our smartphones. A lot of people come to us because they've looked for OCD treatment in Los Angeles, which is where we are. And even though they only live a few miles down the street, they're still doing sessions online because it's so convenient. They can do it at home between sessions with their work or between getting their kids to school. So, OCD treatment online has become a very popular way to also access treatment. And I give these to my clients as we go, because sometimes they're going to need a little extra help.  Now, as I've mentioned to you earlier in there, if you don't have access to OCD treatment, there are tons of self-led OCD courses. Again, one of the ones that we offer is ERP School. Now you can go to CBTSchool.com, or you can click the link below in the show notes, where we have all of these courses for OCD and other anxiety disorders. But there are others as well—other amazing therapists who have created similar products.  When we're really looking at treatment depending on your age, the treatment does look very similar for OCD treatment for adults and OCD treatment for children. They are very, very similar. With children, we might play more games, have more rewards, use those strategies, but to be honest with you, adults are just big kids in adult bodies. So I really believe that we want to make this as fun as we can. Have rewards. Have there be something that you're working towards. Make it fun. Make it a part of a game. I use a lot of games in treatment and a lot of ERP games because why do we want to make everything boring all the time? Why not make it a little bit fun if we can? Number seven, the main thing I'm going to tell you here, and this is really, really important, is I will not ask you to do something that you don't want to do. I have this in our welcome manual. We don't ask people to do things that go against their values, and we don't ask people to do things that I myself would not do. There are a lot of TV shows that sort of use ERP and exposure work as sort of like doing your worst, worst, worst, worst, worst case. And that's fine. But often we're not doing that. We're doing exposures, we're facing your fears so that you can get back to functioning, so you can get back to doing the things you want to do. So again, I'm not going to have you do anything you don't want to do. You're in charge. If you're taking ERP School, we do the same thing. You create your own plan. You create a hierarchy of what you want to start with, and we work our way up. And we do the same thing in therapy as well.  Now the eighth thing that I will tell you, and by then you're probably getting a little tired and overwhelmed. We might take a little tea break really quick, but I would tell you that recovery is not linear. While we do have effective treatment for OCD, it will be an up-and-down process. You'll have really good days, and you'll have some hard days. And those hard days don't mean that you're doing anything wrong. It doesn't mean that your treatment's not successful. It just means we have to take a look here and see what's going well, what's not going well, what do we need to tweak, do we need to make a pivot here. Or do we need to reassess something and maybe apply some additional tools—mindfulness tools again, self-compassion skills, some distress tolerance skills, maybe? But just remember, your recovery will not be linear, and that is okay.  Now the ninth thing I'm going to tell you is that your OCD treatment goals must be clear. You are going to get really clear on why you're here, what you want to do, why you're doing this treatment because it is hard work. Again, there's homework. I'm going to be giving you some things to do at home, and they're going to be a little bit difficult. They're going to cause you to feel some feelings that maybe you don't want to feel, some sensations you don't want to feel.  And so, really again, I will ask them, like, what are your goals for treatment? Now, some common OCD goals for OCD therapy is to reduce compulsions. “I want to be able to not be doing these compulsions for hours and hours.” Other people say, “I want to live my life according to my values. I don't want to let fear constantly be telling me what to do.” Other people will say, “I want to learn how to tolerate this discomfort and this uncertainty because every time I try and run away from it, it just gets worse. It makes it worse. And now I'm stuck in this cycle.” So it's important that you get really clear.  Sometimes people will come in and they'll say, “I've never been to Paris. I want to be able to go to Paris with my family. And so, that's the goal.” That's fine too. You could have a large goal like that, or you could have a really simple goal like, “I just want to have more space in my life to paint,” or “I don't want to feel like I'm on edge all the time, like the scariest thing is going to happen all the time.” And that's fine too.  Now, the 10th thing that you're going to need to know and need to remember is, our recovery is really dependent on how open and honest you are. As I said at the beginning, some people don't feel yet like they can trust to tell me the depth of their intrusive thoughts, and that's okay. But throughout therapy, I'm going to need you to be really honest with me and really honest with yourself, because if you're not disclosing what's going on and the thoughts you're having, we can't actually apply the skills to it. And then it puts a wrench in the success of your treatment.  So we want you to be as open, honest as you can. And I often will say to them, there is nothing I haven't heard. In fact, if you have taken ERP School already—a lot of you have—we actually play a couple of games where we play a game called One Up, which is where no matter what thought you have, you make it a little worse or little more scary. And I give some demonstrations and show like I'm not afraid to go there. I will go to the scary, yucky place just to show you that that's what I want you to do as well. Again, it doesn't have to be all serious. We're allowed to play games, and we do that in therapy as well.  Often people will ask like, how do I tell my therapist about these horrible thoughts I'm having? Like, how do I share? If you're having a specific type of thought that you feel is particularly taboo or very scary to share, or you're afraid of the consequences of sharing, what I would encourage you to do is do a very quick Google search. There are some amazing websites and articles online of your obsession. Print it out and bring it to your therapist, and say, “Hey, this is what I'm dealing with. I'm too scared or I'm too vulnerable to share. It's so horrendous in my mind, but this is what I'm going through.” And chances are, again, the therapist, if they're a trained OCD specialist, will go, “Ah, thank you for letting me know. I've treated that before. I'm good to go.” Again, if they're a newer therapist, it's still okay because they're getting the education about really common obsessions that happen a lot in our practice.  Okay. Here we go—drum roll to the last one. And I know you guys are probably already guessing what it is. It's something I say to my patients and to you guys all the time, and it's this: It's a beautiful day to do hard things.  We have been taught that life should be easy, shouldn't be scary, shouldn't be hard, and that you should be Instagram-ready all the time. But the truth is, life is hard. And today is a beautiful day to do those hard things. I have found that those who recover the fastest and the most successful over time are the ones who see discomfort as a challenge, something that they're willing to have. They'll say, “Bring it on, let's go. Bring my shoulders back. I know it's going to be here.” And they're really gentle with themselves when they have this discomfort. And I want you to really walk away feeling empowered that you too can handle some pretty uncomfortable things because you already are. So again, it's a beautiful day to do hard things.  All right, let's round it out because I know I promised you some extra things here. Now, what have we covered? We've covered the mindset shifts that you need for OCD therapy, behavioral changes that you're going to need to make. We've talked about complementary tools, the most important being self-compassion. And also, guys, you can also follow Your Anxiety Toolkit because we have over 380 episodes of tools and core concepts, and everything like that.  Now, for treatment, just so that you get an idea of what this would look like, I share with my patients what treatment looks like. So usually, once I've told them all of this, I send them home with their welcome manual, and I'll say, “The next two to three sessions, I'm going to be training you for this treatment. And a lot of that is going to involve psychoeducation, me giving you tools, giving you strategies, putting a plan together.” And again, for those of you who don't have therapy, we do exactly that in ERP School. So if you feel like you need some structure, you can go to CBTSchool.com and access ERP School. We can go through that.  Now, for those of you, again, who don't have an OCD therapist, does OCD therapy and treatment work for you too? Yes. We actually have some early research to show that self-led programs can be very successful for people with OCD and with other anxiety disorders. So, if you don't have access to therapy, you could take ERP School. You could buy some workbooks that you buy from Amazon or your local bookstore. There are a ton of workbooks out there. Shameless plug, I also wrote one called The Self-Compassion Workbook for OCD. You can get it wherever you buy books. There are also online groups. I'm a huge, huge proponent of online groups. So if there are support groups in your area, by all means, use those because just knowing other people who are struggling, what you're struggling with can be so validating and inspiring because you're seeing them do the hard thing as well.  But either way, treatment requires a lot of homework. So, as I say to patients, showing up here once a week isn't going to get you better. You're going to have to practice the skills. And if you don't have a therapist, you're going to be doing that anyway. So I want to really hope that you leave here with a sense of inspiration and hope that you can get better even if you don't have OCD therapy at this time. So there you go, guys. There are the 11 things I tell my patients on the very first session. I will usually end the session by encouraging them and, again, congratulating them for coming in and doing this work with me. Let them know I'm so excited for them.  I hope that this was helpful for you, and my hope is that you too will then go on to learn all the tools that you need in your tool belt and go on to live the life that you want to live because that's the whole mission here at Your Anxiety Toolkit.  Have a wonderful day, everybody, and I'll talk to you next week.

It first started over 20 years ago when I went to my first bodybuilding competition to support my friend Shelley at her first show. At the time the only divisions were fitness and bodybuilding and Shelley was a bodybuilder. I remember that overwhelming feeling coming over me while in the audience watching her on stage. The feeling told me that I absolutely was going to be a bodybuilder starting right then. I was 20 years young and bodybuilding at the time didn't have the appeal to as many people as it does today because there weren't all the different categories that there are today. In fact, after my first show I brought a picture of me with a thank you note written on it to the gym I worked out at and gave it to the staff at the front desk who always seemed so supportive of me while I was there training for my show. The next day, I noticed the picture was missing, so I asked the people at the front desk what happened to it. They said they were told to remove my picture because they didn't want to promote “that type of stuff” here at this gym.  I'll never forget how that made me feel. But I had that overwhelming feeling that told me to keep going regardless of how other people thought or treated me. There will be judgement by others for anything you want to do, no matter what it is.  But, we wake up with our thoughts and live with ourselves all day long.  I'd rather be inspired by myself than repressed to please others. And now today over 20 years later bodybuilding is still a major part of my life, including here with this podcast, where I talk to you guys about all things bodybuilding. Bodybuilding is also a major part of my life with my posing business too, which also came about from a strong, overwhelming feeling that I needed to create products and services all about posing and stage presence.  I started this business 11 years ago at the gym I owned by hosting weekly posing classes and booking private 1 on 1 lessons. When I sold the gym and focused primarily on posing and stage presence I definitely received a lot of backlash. People thought I was crazy to not want to focus on the nutrition and training component of bodybuilding in addition to the posing. To others, posing was this thing over here that didn't need its own focus. But I knew differently. After my experience with people literally traveling 4 hours each direction to come and learn how to pose and perform from me (before there was ever something called a posing coach), I knew 100% there was a market for what I do. I knew that there are people out there that have never been on stage before and will spend money to learn how to perform their best on stage in their underwear. I knew from experience there are people who do care how they present themselves and would pay for the right help. I also know as a bodybuilder myself that at the end of the day we want to win and will leave no stone unturned in order to give it our best shot. I don't need the world to agree with me.  In fact, if you don't value what I can do for you, then you aren't my customer anyways, and that's ok. Even today with the popularity of everyone wanting to be a posing coach, it's risky to focus on just posing because you still have coaches who do the nutrition and training component and want to control their clients in every way. I don't blame them because they want their clients to look their best on stage, and with the amount of terrible posing instruction out there, how do they know who to trust to send their clients to that is actually going to elevate their client's posing and stage presence skills?  But on the flip side some coaches are holding their clients back from looking their best by not outsourcing the posing component to a true specialist.  100% of what you do on stage on show day is nonverbal. And when you are on stage with a ton of people, every little detail counts in order to stand out. Those details need to be isolated and refined by a specialist.  Today everyone is a posing coach. It's challenging to separate the quality of instruction out there and find a true specialist.  If you want to know if someone is decent posing coach, ask him or her to show their client transformations. If someone can take a person from hot mess to show stopper then you have my attention. If you are seeing transformations of customers who were already decent at posing and they show just a small tweak in the transformation, I'm not impressed. It's like advertising an Olympian as your best student. They are an Olympian because they are already above average versus people just starting out are often awkward at posing. I've had clients go from placing 4th and 5th in their contests to winning their shows. I know with every ounce of my being that posing wins shows.  But to those who don't know me, I'm just another person showing people how to pose.  I have students that are always so supportive and posting about me in the groups on Facebook that they are a part of, but their comments are overwhelmed by tons and tons more comments of other posing coaches too. It's not easy to stand out in a saturated market and some think that what I do won't survive, but the overwhelming feeling inside me tells me otherwise.    I've also had a lot of naysayers tell me that people want in person posing instruction and I'll never be successful with an online posing business. I know with every part of my being that my virtual classes are not only effective, countless students have become really phenomenal with my 100% virtual class method.  So I don't need the world to approve of what I do.  I know differently.  Plus, there are students in my weekly group virtual posing classes that have been a part of them for a year, so I know there are people who enjoy what I teach in my classes, because I teach more than just how to pose. The way I see it, I'd rather have a smaller pool of people who are driven to succeed, and happy to be there, than a large pool of people who don't care as much as I do.  My husband always says I care too much. He is right, so I'd rather have people want to be a part of what I do and care about it too. A few years ago I created a program that included a bunch of posing courses and digital products I made for bodybuilding.  These products were designed to make people better at posing. The students that bought my program were willing to spend good money for all the things I made.  They were excited to have all of my tools.  But there was one major problem.  The people that bought my program weren't who I thought they would be. The people who bought my program were either brand new to bodybuilding and had no clue how to pose, or they had some experience with competing, but their posing skills needed a lot of improvement.  I remember waking up with this overwhelming feeling that I needed to do something about their lack of basic posing knowledge. I couldn't in good conscience allow people to spend good money on the products that are meant to *elevate* their skills without them having a foundation of skills to build off of.  It wasn't right. I felt the overwhelming need to help them. So for no extra charge I added 16 weeks of weekly live virtual calls to the program where we met as a group online so I could teach them the foundation skills on how to pose properly for their divisions and federations.  16 weeks was excessive, but I cared about their success, and I wanted to help them.  The classes HAD to be virtual because the people in the program were worldwide and not local to me. I had men and women students getting ready for shows in different divisions and federations too, and since I have experience first hand in all of them, I discovered I had no issue switching hats between divisions and federations with my posing instruction right on the fly on every call.  Over the 16 weeks each and every student not only learned the foundation skills they needed to pose correctly, they utilized the additional tools they bought from the program to elevate their skills. It was 100% group virtual instruction and 100% digital products, and the combination worked. It worked incredibly well. They all became really good at posing.  I learned from this experience that not only could I teach a group of people how to pose at once, I could instantly switch between men and women divisions and federations on the fly. And I could do this 100% virtual. And every one of my students had great results. And from this experience, my virtual posing clinics and weekly virtual classes for all men and women federations and divisions were birthed. I started hosting one-time virtual posing clinics to teach people how to pose for all divisions and federations followed by an invitation to join my weekly virtual classes. My clinics went from being generalized for all federations to growing to the point where there was enough demand for me to separate the clinics by federation.  So far I have hosted virtual clinics for OCB, NPC, WNBF, and USBF.  At first none of the organizations promoted my clinics. I simply promoted them myself and through word of mouth referrals. But then it changed in late 2022 after interviewing Sean Sully Sullivan from the OCB organization here on on my podcast.  Sully and I hit it off so well that when I asked Sully and his organization The OCB if they would endorse my virtual posing clinics, they agreed to promote them to their athletes starting January 29th, 2023. For all of 2023 I hosted my virtual posing clinics every single month for the OCB with the OCB's blessing and the incredible promotion skills of OCB powerhouse Marjorie Thrash. The clinics proved to be a success for the organization, the athlete, and me. The relationship worked because the OCB and I together believed that the service I offer for athletes is valuable to the athletes and actually helps them, so it is a win win for all involved.  Then, a couple months ago, I woke up with a new idea that I couldn't shake. I had to pull out my purple notebook and a pen so I could physically write down my thoughts as they poured out of me. The first thing I wrote was…United States Posing Clinic Tour. I am so passionate about my method of instruction in my posing clinics and how quickly I can help people get up to speed with their posing skills, that I woke up with an overwhelming desire to take my clinics on the road to get the word out as much as possible. The goal is to continue to host my monthly virtual posing clinics and weekly virtual posing classes to reach people globally, but during 2024 I mapped out in my notebook a coast to coast posing clinic tour across the United States. The #1 thing I wrote in my notebook on why I want to do this USA tour is because I thought it would be a lot of fun. And the #2 thing is that I truly believe that what I do helps people learn things the right way from the start on becoming their best on show day. But there is a lot of noise out there and I want to reach as many people as possible. So my goal is to pound the pavement and get the word out that my method of instruction is the starting place to becoming a champion poser.  Pounding the pavement means reaching people anywhere and everywhere both in person and virtual. And to my surprise, when I asked the OCB if they would endorse this in person posing tour, in addition to my monthly virtual posing clinics, I got the full blessing not just from the organization, but the promoters in every single location you will see on my tour.  These promoters are stand out promoters in my eyes. They truly believe in what I am doing and how it helps the athletes so much, that they, too, gave their full blessing and cooperation to host a live in person clinic in their region of the country.  These clinics are not giant expos that showcase the most famous athletes in the organization.  They are not celebrity showcases that make you feel intimidated for being new or newer to the sport. They are not events that say you are going to learn how to pose, only for you to be SHOWN how to pose by the pros with no actual method of instruction to take home with.  My clinics are about you the athlete.  When you come to my posing clinics whether they are virtual or in person, you will learn how to pose for your category, whether it's men's bodybuilding or women's bikini, I teach all the divisions. You will learn what you really need to focus on for your stage walks and posing routines so you feel your best and not awkward on stage.  You will learn strategy so you score your highest on show day.  You learn everything you need to know so you can look and feel like a champion.  They are the starting place to becoming your best on show day. My United States posing tour starts March 2nd in Daytona Beach Florida followed by March 9th in Nashville Tennessee.  March 16th I'll be in Columbus Ohio, followed by April 13th in Rochester NY. In June we head west starting in Dallas, TX June 29th, Orange County California July 20th, and then Las Vegas NV on July 27th. There are a couple of mystery locations that will be added in May and June too since a few more additional promoters are reaching out wanting us to add their location to the tour! I also have virtual clinics planned for March 23rd, April 20th, and ongoing every month during the entire year.  My virtual NPC clinics will continue during the year as along with all of the virtual posing classes that I teach every single week for all divisions and federations.  In fact, after a clinic, you should totally join my virtual classes so you can take what you learn at a clinic and elevate your skills.  Even if you know how to pose, come to a clinic and join me live in person or online! This year is going to be a lot of fun and you can never know enough when it comes to posing and stage skills. For details on each of my posing clinic locations and to register for one, head on over to learntopose.com! Click on the tour tab and it will take you to all the in person locations this year. Breaking up with a client is never easy.  But cutting ties with a difficult client is sometimes necessary. Sticking around in a draining or difficult relationship is much worse than NOT having that uncomfortable conversation.Positive & negative interactions we have with clients has a direct impact on the work we produce.  Not to mention, how it effects our mental health. If you're working with a difficult client, the unnecessary stress and frustration is most likely trickling down into other parts of your business and your life. Let's talk about how to break up with a client in a professional way.Click HERE for more information about the ButcherBox.If you use the links in this review to purchase, I will receive a commission at no additional cost to you.If you enjoy the Real Life Startup Podcast, subscribe here and share with your friends.TRANSCRIPT:There are many reasons a client might not be a good fit:  They make it difficult to get paid (or worse, they refuse to pay). They're not sure what they want and there's no clear direction, and they are never satisfied. They're over demanding and don't respect your boundaries. They're just disrespectful and treat you poorly.Sometimes in the beginning of our business we are eager to get started serving others and ignore the red flags.  I can tell you from experience working with a difficult client does not self correct and their behavior only escalates in the wrong direction.  Let's talk about what to do?  Here are 5 steps, or we can call it an action plan to remove yourself from the relationship and move on.#1 Review the ContractHaving a termination clause in your contract with each client is crucial.  No one anticipates having bad experiences, but they do happen and now you have some recourse to fall back on.  Here a few tips to include in your contract. For example: Be sure to pay attention to your stated term of notice that is required.        If you offer a 30 day notice you are obligated to continue working with this client 30 days after notifying them of the relationship termination.  So if you do not want to be tied to them an additional 30 days after terminating the relationship, change this clause.     Clauses about late payments or non-payments.     Scoop of work to be performed. These are great if there is anything that comes up you can direct your client to review the contract.  Let's say your client pays late or doesn't pay at all.  Have them refer to the contract and can provide them with a “warning” and state next infraction will lead to termination.  #2 Whatever you do, don't ghost them Regardless how difficult the client is, or awkward the conversation is, you are responsible to end things in a professional manner.I strongly believe in treating people how you want to be treated.  No one likes being ghosted, so don't do it, it's unprofessional and just rude.  We're so much better than that.See Episode Webpage HERE for the FULL Transcript.

History and Folklore Podcast

Churchyard grims, stacked graves and Judgement Day. How did English graveyards changed in England between the medieval and Victorian eras?   Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/historyandfolklorepodcast Instagram: www.instagram.com/historyandfolklore Twitter: @HistoryFolklore Facebook: www.facebook.com/historyandfolklorepodcast Transcript There pass, with melancholy state, By all the solemn heaps of fate, And think, as softly-sad you tread Above the venerable dead, “Time was, like thee they life possessed, And time shall be, that thou shalt rest.” Hello, welcome to the History and Folklore podcast, where we look at different folk beliefs through history and how these beliefs shape people's perceptions of nature. In this episode we will be looking at graveyards. As this is a huge topic, I will be focussing predominantly on Christian graveyards in England as that is what I have the most experience and knowledge on, and looking at their development, uses and folklore surrounding them. Graveyards are interesting as hanges that have occurred in them over time often reflect a lot about the society that uses them including such wide ranging things as demographics, life expectancy, religious beliefs, attitudes to death, burial and remembrance, use of symbology, aesthetic design preferences and attitudes to the natural elements within the cemetery. The establishment of new graveyards can tell us about practical, political and religious considerations at the time regarding burial. Many graveyards that currently exist in England date from the medieval period, and rural graveyards would often have been the first enclosed space to have existed within a parish. Some of these graveyards were established even earlier as burial grounds dating as far back as the Iron Age, and were later adopted and sanctified to be used for Christian burials. A graveyard would usually be established in the grounds of the parish church, and would be consecrated before being used by the people in the parish. This sometimes caused issues for those living in distant, rural villages as the journey to the parish church could be long and dangerous. In these instances, the people living in these villages could apply to the parish church for their nearby chapel to be granted burial rights. However, as burial services provided a large income for the church or chapel at which the burial took place, these rights were hard won as the parish church would not want to lose the income from these burials. In the cases of burial grounds attached to hospitals often an agreement was made for the hospital to pay the parish church for every burial they conducted. However, disputes over burial rights were common, especially when a new monastery became established  in an area. These religious institutions often wanted to be perceived to be the preferred place for burial, especially by the elite, as this would bring the monastery both prestige and continued wealth from the families of the interred, who would pay for services and prayers for the soul of their deceased relative. These families would then be more likely to choose the same monastery for future burials, as family tradition often dictated where a person chose to be buried. In some cases these disputes got pretty intense and example being in 1392 when the monks of Abingdon actually hijacked a funeral procession and disinterred 67 people from the parish's burial grounds with the aim of reburying them at the monastery. Because of the loss of income and potential prestige, a compelling argument had to be put forward to justify the creation of a new graveyard and the giving away of burial rights. The most common reason given was that the journey was long and dangerous. In 1427 the people of Highweek complained of having to bury their dead at the parish church, despite being able to perform the burial rituals at their local chapel, meaning they had to undertake a long and dangerous journey for the sole purpose of burying the body. However, complaints could also be financial. Two years later the parish of St Ives applied for burial rights as people had to put their occupations on hold for so long that they lost a substantial amount of revenue when taking part in funeral processions. On top of this, as so many people would leave their homes to  undertake the journey their deserted homes and belonging would be seen as easy prey for pirates, causing more financial hardship and distress. In some places funerals were even delayed as the local economy could not sustain lengthy absences caused by people attending funerals. Whether a graveyard was being adapted from an existing burial ground or created from scratch, the land had to be sanctified before any Christian burials took place. In order to do this, the land would be cleared and a ceremony would be conducted by a bishop who would place a cross in each corner of the graveyard and another in the centre. Three lit candles would be placed in front of each cross and the bishop would walk around the churchyard, making sure to waft incense and sprinkle holy water at each cross. If a mortal sin was committed within the bounds of a graveyard then it would need to be spiritually cleansed before it could be used for burials. This would usually include some form of public penance by the perpetrator, the payment of reconciliation fees and a ceremony conducted by an archbishop that involved blessing and sprinkling water at specific sites on the grave yard. Until these processes and ceremonies were completed then the graveyard could not be used for burials. This period of disuse could last for a significant amount of time, an example being the Minster Yard at Beverley in Yorkshire, which was considered polluted for two years between 1301 and 1303 following the murder of Peter of Cranswick. Unsurprisingly, being unable to bury people in the local churchyard had a significant impact on both the income of the church and the life of the community. Interestingly another ceremony that seems very unchristian to modern eyes was often conducted by the parishioners once the graveyard was consecrated. This tradition stated that the first soul to be buried in the graveyard becomes the churchyard's grim and must watch over and protect the inhabitants inside it. This would mean that the deceased soul was doomed to remain on earth, and would never have the opportunity to pass on to the afterlife. For this reason an animal, most commonly a dog, would be buried in a graveyard before any funerals had taken place. In other parts of England it was maintained that the last person to be buried in a graveyard must watch over and protect it until the next funeral occured, when the watch would be taken over by the more recently deceased. In these areas, if two burials were scheduled on the same day, it was known for the funeral parties to race and fight to get their loved one buried first to spare them the burden on acting as the graveyard's protector. A medieval graveyard would have looked very different to how it would today. Burials tended not to be marked with permanent memorials like they would in later periods, with people using temporary markers such as flowers, pieces of cloth and mounds of earth for recent graves. It was not until the eighteenth century that longer-lasting gravestones made of local stone and decorated with symbols of the deceased's profession and personality started to become fashionable. Partly due to this early the lack of permanent memorials, the graveyard was seen as a useful open space and was often used as a hub for the community where archery practice, markets, games, fairs and festivals would be held. The only permanent structure would be the wall, and often a stone preaching cross that would be used as the focal point for outdoor services such as palm sunday. The way that graves were organised in burial sites also differed compared today.  Although there was nothing to mark the grave, people were generally buried with care, usually on the south side of the church, with their feet pointing towards the east and their heads pointing towards the west. The primary reason given for this in medieval texts was that the dead would be facing Christ on the Day of Judgement, as he would appear from the east, which was the region of goodness and light. However, this explanation was not given until after the ninth century, and is likely to be a later attempt to explain an older tradition. There are instances of people not being buried according to this tradition. Often this appears to be due to a fear of the dead person rising from the grave, for example criminals and those who had died violent deaths. In St Andrews in York, the only body buried in the opposite direction had also been beheaded, a common deterrent against the wandering dead. Other less sinister explanations coud be that the orientation of the body got confused before burial, an issue that would be more likely when simple coffins were in use or when burials were conducted hastily, such as during times of plague. A particularly strange example of an otherwise normal, and even high status, burial was of a priest who was buried with his head facing the wrong way. It has been suggested that the east to west orientation was chosen in this case so that the priest could face his congregation on Judgement Day. As time went on, graveyards became more crowded, and with no markers to indicate where existing graves lay, bodies were often disturbed when new graves were dug. The most well known example of this is the famous scene in Hamlet, when Ophelia is being buried. In this scene Hamlet realises that the skull of his old friend, Yorick, has been dug up and, while he shows curiosity at the state of the skull and then sorrow at Yorick's passing, he is not upset that Yorick's grave has been desecrated as modern audiences might expect. The lack of available burial space meant that graveyards soon became overcrowded and the dead were often moved, buried on top of each other and even removed completely to maximise space. It has been estimated that most graveyards contain around 10,000 burials, making the ground within the graveyard much higher compared to the ground outside the cemetery walls. The point at which burials moved from carefully laid out rows laid shoulder to shoulder to a jumbled mess of layered bodies occurred at different times in different cemeteries. In some places this change occurred very early on, prior to the 1066 conquest. However, in others the change occurred much later, around the twelfth century, and it has been suggested that, as well as for practical reasons, this change in attitude may have been at least partially guided in the shift in belief from away from a Judgement Day where the dead would return in their physical bodies and towards purgatory, where the soul of the dead person would go almost immediately after death. The dead no longer needed their bodies in the afterlife, and so their physical remains could be treated with less care. Despite the constant rearranging of burials to maximise space, the overcrowding soon became an issue and eventually reached emergency levels, especially in urban areas. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, London had only 218 acres of burial ground. This led to some of the graveyards of the oldest churches being densely packed. St Marylebones, for example, had more than 100,000 bodies buried into a cemetery that measured about an acre in size. When the poet William Blake died in 1827 he was buried in Bunhill Fields on top of three other bodies, and four more were later buried on top of him. By the mid-nineteenth century graves became so shallow that scavenging animals could access the bodies, dragging the rotting corpses to the surface, a problem exacerbated by the fact that London lies on heavy clay soil that impedes decomposition, and causing the smell of decaying flesh to overwhelm the few visitors that might have ventured to visit a graveside. This issue could also be true of newer burial grounds. Enon Chapel, near the Strand in London, was licenced for burials between 1823 and 1842, a period of just nineteen years. The vaults were turned into a cemetery and the chapel's reverend charged a low fee of just fifteen shillings for burial, making it a popular choice for interment. It was reported that over nineteen years at least twenty bodies per week were placed in a space measuring just 18 metres by 12 metres and speculated both that quicklime was used to speed decay and that a sewer ran through the vaults, allowing the bodies to be washed away to the Thames. Even if these suppositions were true, the smell became so overwhelming that worshippers in the church above were known to regularly faint due to the fumes. It was accounts of these types of events that led to the reform laid out in the burial act of 1852, which closed burial grounds within metropolitan Lonson and allowed the opening of large cemeteries in the countryside surrounding the city, with more available space and located on sandier, better draining soils. These graveyards were beautifully decorated, with ornate headstones and sculptures to commemorate the deceased. The fertile soil was planted with shrubs and trees and people would make trips on the recently built railways to go and enjoy the fresh country air, meet friends for walks and visits and visit the graves of the famous people buried there. In this way, despite changing religious attitudes concerning the need for the body in the afterlife, different ways of commemorating the dead and practical considerations regarding their burial, graveyards went full circle from open, community spaces with ordered  burials in the early medieval period to crowded, often unsanitary spaces reserved primarily for the dead, and back again in the Victorian era to enjoyable community spaces were designed to be shared by both the living and the dead. SALLY Hey Hedge, NARRATOR Sally said, SALLY (CONT'D) How can I get a membership at this gym? HEDGE Can you bench press over 50 pounds? SALLY Can I? NARRATOR And Sally proceeded to bench press two hundred fifty pounds! Without even a spotter! So Hedge gave Sally a membership and they worked out together happily ever after. An old enemy returns and why the Kents left Hamilton County.Affiliate link included.Transcript:There's something weird going on in Hamilton County when Batman comes to town. Find out more about it as we take a look at Superman Volume 4: Black Dawn. Straight ahead.[Intro Music]Announcer:Welcome to the Classy Comics podcast where we search for the best comics in the universe. From Boise, Idaho here is your host, Adam Graham. D.C. Rebirth began with Clark Kent and family living in Hamilton County. Clark running a farm with Lois getting rehired to the Planet, first impersonating her younger self and then made the actual Lois Lane with the advance of Superman Reborn, where the 2 timelines were merged. She, and now Clark, have jobs in Metropolis and so, eventually, it's going to require moving there. I think this has always been in the offing. As much as I like the idea of Clark Kent, rural farmer who super commutes as Superman, I think that these things in comics, there tends to be a gravitational pull back towards a certain status quo and one of those big things is Lois Lane and Clark Kent, reporters for The Daily Planet, working and living in Metropolis. So, this was always going to end and I think that the writers of Superman, where most of the Hamilton County stuff occurred, were really aware of that; that this was not going to last forever and so they actually were pretty clever about it. They worked in little hints throughout the Superman issues that showed some of the weirdness going on in Hamilton County but never focused on it too much except for one issue which didn't seem at the time to really go anywhere but in retrospect, was part of the weirdness going on throughout this. And so, we come to Black Dawn and in many ways Black Dawn is like a finale of a T.V. series. The book contains issues 20 through 26 with the Black Dawn storyline taking up issues 20 through 25 and you remember Superman is being published every two weeks. Currently, it'll be just monthly when Brian Michael Bendis takes over. So, this is the culmination of a year's worth of storytelling and their writer Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason as the artist, really, it's a great run. I highly recommend it, right from the first volume but at any rate the story begins with Batman coming to town to report some problems with John's powers and some weirdness going on in Hamilton County and Superman, Batman, Robin and his son John, aka Superboy, are doing the general superhero thing of scoping around in the shadows until Lois Lane comes out and shines the light on them and tells them to be like normal people and go indoors to talk and so there is this great picture. This is one of my favorite pictures from the Patrick Gleason art on Superman where you've got Batman and Superman sitting at the kitchen table of farmhouse along with Robin and Superboy and you've got the rooster clock in the background and it's just as beautiful for how out of place and awkward Batman looks in this picture. It's got one of these great lines, where because Batman doesn't eat his pie, and Superboy asked “Doesn't your dad like Apple?” and Robin whispers, “Batman doesn't eat pie.”, and it's just a beautiful, weird little thing and I just love that. It's really emblematic of the sort of fun this series has had. Really, it's just a tremendous picture and it's one of my favorites in this run so I love that and essentially Batman reveals that there's weird readings and that John's powers are being repressed, for some reason, and he's here to investigate and everybody goes to bed but Batman wanders out on his own and is captured. So, it's a serious situation and other people disappear and get captured. Lois finds herself alone in the farmhouse and so we get an issue where Lois is dealing with being alone in this really weird...

A story of a really bad travel experience in 2012.... that ended up with me being alive. Thanks (or no thanks?) to my procrastination. / / / / / ------------- / / Transcript: / / There was a time when I was VERY MUCH into crossfit. It's this exercise cult thing- and they have their own games- like the olympic games, but with weight lifting and way less attention to personal safety. / / / / In 2012, the crossfit games were being held in LAX in July- and I was gonna go. / / / / First problem: I procrastinated too long and didn't have a ticket AND they were sold out.. No scalpers online, either. Hmm. No worries. I called up my local paper and asked if they could give me a press pass. They did, weirdly? And I was off. / / / / The trip was scheduled to go something like this: / / DAYTON- DENVER - LAX. Arrive on Friday morning in time for the opening ceramonies. Stay in LA for the games that weekend? Visit some friends in Ventura. Travel back to Dayton on Wednesday--- plenty of time before my next trip: Family vacation in Montreal- on Friday. / / All in all- it was supposed to be 6 flights in less than a week. Pfft. Whatever. I can do that. / / / / So- I'm off to catch my first flight. / / ?.and?.I accidentally slept a little longer than I should have and?.. I miss the flight?. But 4 minutes?.. / / Which means that I would have missed my connecting flight in Denver, too. Which means that my whole schedule was now screwed up as it was delayed a day. / / / / Ok? I'm gonna miss the opening ceremony? Whatever. I'm not being paid for this- it's just for fun, right??? RIGHT??? / / / / Sigh. Ok. So I'm on the next flight. That one goes?. Kinda?. We arrive in Denver and then get delayed in denver due to lack of planes. Something about a huge storm somewhere else- which means that I'm stuck in Denver for 9 hours. / / / / ?? Ok. Fine?. I try to tackle some writing assignments I had, but I'm in an airport!!! There is SO MUCH PEOPLE watching!!!! / / I put off my assignment until I land. / / / / And?.. By the time I DO get to LAX it's Sunday morning. I totally give up trying to get to the stadium for the last 4 hours of the competition and just go to Ventura to meet with my friends and wash the gross off me. / / / / I have a good time there. And we discuss all the hiccups of traveling?. / / / / Missing flights. / / Getting on wrong flights. (That happened a lot in the 70s, apparently). / / We missed our dinner reservation entirely because we were chatting so much. (Opps!) / / / / Wednesday comes- my friends take me to the airport. My flight is delayed due to lots of reasons, but it's also WAY over booked. I offer to take a later flight- but insisting I need to get to Dayton before FRIDAY MORNING? / / / / They say "yea yea. No problem." And book me on the next flight and give me a 200$ voucher. / / / / Btw- if you heard a previous podcast where I talked about having a voucher- this is how you get it. Except! PRO TIP: You wait (or ask nicely) if they can bump it up to the full value? which is somewhere between 350-400$? ask for cash. Never vouchers. Also get a hotel room and all that jazz? I was a n00b and didn't do any of this. So I just got 200$ cash voucher with Delta. / / / / Ah. Delta? it stands for "Doesn't Ever. Leave. The. Airport?? and it's not talking about the plane? it's talking about it's passengers?. / / / / I was in the airport all day on Wednesday. The "next available flight" they promised? Was Thursday morning. / / / / I "slept" in the airport- thank god for tetnus vaccinations, and woke up ready for all sorts of chaos but DETERMINED to get to Dayton that evening for my 6am flight to Montreal the following morning. / / / / My flight had changed slightly. I was now scheduled to go LAX to SFO to DEN to DAY? ok. No big deal. An additional flight, right? What could go wrong? / / / / ?? Why did I have to ask that? / / / / Our flight was delayed getting INTO sfo? and then delayed getting OUT of SFO. And by the time I arrived in Denver, it was Thursday evening of July 19th and I knew I wasn't going to make it to Montreal. / / / / I?. Make the really sad call to my parents. / / / / I then stand in the never-ending line for a hotel pass- figuring I procrastinated on life enough and I should actually do something? While standing in line, I mentally decide that if I don't get a hotel, I'll go to see Batman in the closest theater- which probably won't have tickets, but whatever, I'll give it a go. I have hours to kill, so why not try, right? / / / / Well? You're smart, audience. You know exactly what happened in Aurora on July 20th?. During a batman screening. / / / / My mom tells me this. / / It doesn't quite process? / / I hang up, shower and get breakfast. I watch the horror that all of America watched that morning?.. / / / / I make my way to the airport. EARLY. I check into my flight. EARLY. The TSA agent was polite and really attentitive- which is, oddly, what I expected him to be after a mass shooting 17 miles from this location. / / / / My flight was delayed, of course. Eff-you, Delta. But I finally made it to Dayton by noon. / / / / Alive. / / / / The only thing this whole experience taught me- was that I CAN control some things?.. Like my procrastination. And there are other things that I can?t control?.. Like weather?. Tornados, hurricanes, and? wildfires. Oh- Right. This just in: I?m a wild land firefighter. Contract right now- but I?ve already fought a few! And it?s exhilarating! It?s probably the coolest adrenaline rush since I was in the Philippines. / / / / But? what that means is that I?m probably not going to get my podcasts out on time?.So- I?m taking a break. Until the season here in Minnesota dies down- which is June, apparently. / / / / But stay tuned! I have a mini-series about packing coming up! I also had this cool podcast about Sarajevo- but that?s just gonna have to wait until I get it perfect. It deserves that. / / / / In the meantime, if you?re aching for more stories?. 23. The Big Bang, Inflation, and General Cosmology 2

Transcript: There may be a profound connection between entropy in the universe and the arrow of time, the pervasive since that time moves only in one direction. Remember that the microscopic laws of physics have no arrow of time. However, in any statistical system of particles there’s a tendency for it to move to its most probable state. Entropy is disorder or chaos, but it’s also related to the number of possible states in a system. Imagine the shuffling of a deck of cards as an analogy for the evolution of the universe. Our universe has a relatively low entropy or low degree of disorder, especially compared to a situation where the universe was filled with black holes; the entropy would be millions of times higher. This corresponds to a highly ordered deck of cards. As the deck is shuffled, objects interact in the universe. The order becomes less. The entropy increases. The arrow of time is obvious in this. Interactions will always tend to produce more disorder. However, if the disorder was high to start with, a high degree of entropy at the beginning of the universe, a well shuffled deck of cards, then as the deck is shuffled again there is no change as the deck is shuffled over and over. So high entropy initial state produces no sense of the arrow of time.

25. Early Earth and Life Processes

Transcript: There are two fundamentally different types of cells in life on Earth: prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The prokaryotes are cells without nuclei. They are ten times smaller then the eukaryotes, and they are far less complex in a chemical sense. Eukaryotes, which are larger, have their DNA contained in a nucleus which provides a higher level of functioning and complexity. Examples of prokaryotes are E coli and salmonella. Examples of eukaryotes are amoeba and of course the trillions and trillions of cells in our own bodies. Prokaryotes evolved first and lead to eukaryotes, but both are essential for life on Earth. Although we are more familiar with material that includes cells with nuclei, there are more examples of prokaryotic organisms on Earth than there are eukaryotes, and the small organisms like bacteria are essential to the functioning of the higher level organisms. The reverse is not true. Prokaryotes could exist quite happily without the existence of cells with nuclei.

Transcript: There is a set of organisms that can persist and thrive under conditions of extreme pressures. They are called barophiles. Barophiles can exist at pressures of hundreds of atmospheres. These environments are typically found in the deep sea. For example, there are entire colonies of eukaryotes on the continental shelf. Sea cucumbers and other creatures also exist under very high pressure, and there are microorganisms that thrive near deep sea black smokers. At the other extreme many organisms can do well at conditions of low pressure or high altitude on the Earth’s surface. At the top of the highest mountains there are algae, plants, even insects, and in laboratory experiments certain insects have survived at pressures less than one-tenth of the pressure at sea level.

23. The Big Bang, Inflation, and General Cosmology 2

Transcript: There are two fundamentally different types of matter in the universe. Baryons is the term that refers to normal matter: the stuff that we’re made of; our world, the Earth, the Sun, most of the universe we’re familiar with. It’s the normal material of matter, protons, neutrons, and electrons, although electrons being nearly two thousand times lighter than protons or neutrons do not weigh much in the census. The baryon density is the cosmic density of all this material. To calculate it, astronomers sum up the matter contained in all the galaxies in the universe including their stars, their gas, and their dust, that’s ten to the power twenty galaxies, a hundred billion, billion galaxies, also the material in the intergalactic medium which at early epochs was a majority of the material which has since flowed into galaxies. The sum of the census is ten to the power eighty baryons or microscopic particles. As huge as this number is, it’s only 0.3 percent of the critical density. If there was nothing more than baryonic matter in the universe, it would not nearly be sufficient to close the universe.

23. The Big Bang, Inflation, and General Cosmology 2

Transcript: There’s a basic problem in cosmology. Astronomers measure the light emitted by different objects, but they really want to detect or measure the mass. So the measurement of the mass is indirect. Some galaxies for example are so diffuse that their light level falls below the sky brightness, and so they are missing from galaxy catalogs yet they may contain much dark matter. The intergalactic medium is so diffuse that it cannot be seen in optical light. It is hot and should emit x-rays or ultraviolet radiation, but this has not been directly detected yet. So astronomers must use a variety of techniques to infer the mass density of the universe from the light emission.

Transcript: There is over 100,000 times more carbon dioxide locked up in the ocean and the rocks of Earth than there is in the atmosphere. If even a tiny percentage of this carbon dioxide were released into the atmosphere, it would lead to a runaway greenhouse effect that would raise the temperature of the Earth to the level Venus and beyond, and make life extremely difficult. Thus, there appears to be a fundamental connection between the regulation of carbon dioxide and the carbon dioxide cycle, and the stability of the Earth’s atmosphere long enough to allow complex life to evolve, and the key aspect of this is the presence of plate tectonics, because plate tectonics leads to the subduction of CO2-bearing rocks, and the eventual release of the gas back into the atmosphere through volcanism; thus, it’s a key part in the carbon dioxide cycle. We do not know if planets elsewhere in the solar system or in the universe must have plate tectonics to have well-regulated atmospheres, but appears to be no coincidence that on Earth, plate tectonics help to make the Earth a habitable place.

Transcript: There’s a simple formula to give an approximation for the lifetime of a main sequence star. The lifetime is the mass divided by the luminosity of the star, both in solar units, times nine billion years. However the lifetime does not depend exclusively on mass. As shown by theorists Russell and Vogt in the 1920s the final state of a main sequence star depends both on its mass and its chemical composition. For example a one solar mass star of three quarter hydrogen one quarter helium by mass composition can only form one stable configuration. However it will be a slightly different configuration from a one solar mass star made of half helium and half hydrogen. They will have different positions on the HR diagram. The Russell-Vogt theorem allows astronomers to calculate stellar evolution more accurately because as a star evolves it is continually changing its chemical composition by the conversion of hydrogen into helium, and thus the stable configuration of the star is also evolving with time.

12. Formation and Nature of Planetary Systems

Transcript: There have been a number of mass extinctions in the history of life on Earth. The cause of many of these is uncertain, but there’s good evidence that one, occurring at the junction of the Cretaceous and the Tertiary periods 65 million years ago, when 60 percent of all species became extinct, was caused by an impact from space. A number of strands of evidence combine to point to this conclusion. First, the extinctions themselves, of all types of species occurring within a short span. Second, major global changes in the level of the flood plane. Third, a soot layer indicative of fires raging across the Earth. Fourth, a high concentration of iridium in a narrow geological zone, indicating extraterrestrial material with this rare element. And fifth, high concentrations of tektites and micro-tektites which are glassy spheres that occur when rock is melted, as in volcanic or explosive activity, and rains back down to Earth. This all occurred within a span of geologically short time, although geology can not say that it was instant. The smoking gun was found in the 1980s by the father-son team of Walter and Luis Alvarez. They located good evidence for a crater off the Yucatan Peninsula whose radioactive date was 65 million years ago. This is the crater of the 10 kilometer or so asteroid that hit the Earth and caused extinction of the dinosaurs and many other species.

Interplanetary bodies range in size from 1,000 kilometers to chunks of rock the size of a house and smaller. They range in composition from icy to rocky to metallic. They range in distance from 50 to 100,000 astronomical units, or a 100,000 times the distance of the Earth from the Sun, to orbits that plunge inside the Earth's orbit and sometimes into the Sun itself. The largest of these objects are icy comets and rocky and metallic asteroids.

Transcript: There are many situations in physics and astronomy where there is a mixture of gravitational potential energy and kinetic energy, or the energy of motion. An object in orbit around another object has both. In a circular orbit, there is one-half the amount of kinetic energy as the amount of gravitational potential energy, and both are constant through the orbit. In an elliptical orbit however, the amount of each type of energy changes continuously throughout the orbit. For example, in orbits in the solar system, or more particularly in the case of a highly elliptical comet orbit, the comet moves faster when it is closer to the sun. Thereby, its kinetic energy increases as its gravitational potential energy decreases, but the sum of the two remains constant. You can see these examples in more everyday situations right on the surface the Earth. When a ball rolls down an inclined plane, at the start, it has the maximum amount of gravitational potential energy and no kinetic energy, no motion. As it accelerates down the plane its gravitational potential energy decreases, and its kinetic energy increases. Or, consider a child on a swing. At each end of the swing the child is momentarily stationary and has no kinetic energy but is raised at the maximum height above the Earth’s surface and so has the maximum gravitational potential energy. As the child moves through the arc of the swing the kinetic energy increases, and the gravitational potential energy decreases until at the opposite end of the swing. Once again kinetic energy goes to zero, and gravitational potential energy is at maximum.

Transcript: There are several broad types of energy. Energy is measured in units of calories in the English system or joules in the international system of metric units. One broad category of energy is kinetic energy, or the energy of motion. A second broad category of energy is electromagnetic energy, energy carried by waves of light and other forms of radiation. A third form of energy is heat energy which is the random microscopic motions of atoms and molecules. A final category of energy is potential energy. Energy stored in different forms could be within the chemical bonds that release fuel energy, could be energy stored in electromagnetic fields, could be nuclear energy stored within the nucleus of an atom. All of these different forms of energy can be quantified, and they can often be turned from one form into another.

Transcript: There are four basic states of matter in the universe. The temperatures of transition between them depend a little bit on the chemical substance or compound involved, but in general we can say that solids correspond to temperatures of up to one or two hundred Kelvin. The microscopic motions of the atoms and molecules are one or two kilometers per second, and these substances emit far infrared thermal radiation. Liquids are somewhat hotter, temperatures of three or four hundred Kelvin. Microscopic motions are two or three kilometers per second and liquids also emit far infrared thermal radiation. Gases are hotter still, temperatures of six hundred Kelvin up to a thousand Kelvin or so. Microscopic motions are three or four kilometers per second for the atoms or molecules, and thermal radiation is in the infrared region of the spectrum. The hottest materials are called plasmas. These range up from three thousand Kelvin up to many thousands of Kelvin. The microscopic motions are ten kilometers per second or larger, and the type of thermal emission from a plasma is visible radiation or ultraviolet radiation.

Steps of the Scientific Method

Transcript: There are several essential steps in the scientific method. They apply equally to astronomy and all other sciences. The first step is gathering data or observations. In astronomy this is usually not direct evidence. Usually it’s radiation gathered from space. The more observations or data the better. The second process is to analyze the data or look for patterns. Scientists look for patterns in the evidence or observations as a way of understanding how nature works. This leads to insights as in the example of the periodic table or the patterns in fossils that might tell how species evolved. Astronomers also look for patterns. In the third step astronomers take the patterns they have found and form a hypothesis to try and explain all the observations they have in hand. They hope this hypothesis will lead to predictions about new situations as yet untested. And if the hypothesis is successful, they form a theory of nature to try and describe what they’ve been observing. Science can never guarantee truth, but with sufficiently good observations it can guarantee good explanations of the natural world we live in.

Transcript: There’s very little direct evidence in astronomy. In a few cases we’ve been lucky enough to have meteorites falling from space. We’ve even had a few free samples of Mars. But most of the evidence of astronomy is gathered remotely. We’ve sent spacecrafts to most parts of the solar system, and they’ve sent back images and other information of radiation received. We’ve used telescopes to explore distant regions of space. We’ve extended our senses across the electromagnetic spectrum with detectors that can measure everything from x-rays and gamma rays to long wavelength radio waves. In astronomy we depend on the extension of our senses through technology but must of the evidence of astronomy is indeed indirect, the radiation that reaches us from throughout the universe.

1. Fundamentals of Science and Astronomy

Transcript: There is no science without evidence. When a scientist makes an assertion he must back it up with evidence. The evidence could be evidence that is physical evidence. It could be evidence gathered from telescopes, or microscopes, or other mechanisms we have to extend our senses. But a scientist must always back up what they say with real data. For instance, 200 years ago Jean Batiste Biot in France saw stones that fell from the sky. Nobody thought that stones could fall from the sky. But by gathering the eye witness accounts of many villagers and by gathering up fragments of stones that had no known terrestrial composition, he was able to prove that meteorites do exist, and they do indeed fall from the sky. Contrast this with the idea of UFOs, unidentified flying objects. Eye witness reports of UFOs have been piling up for decades, yet there has never been a single confirmed case where physical evidence has been evaluated independently by scientists leading to support for the idea of alien visitations. And so on through the whole edifice of science we can not understand anything without relying on evidence.

TRANSCRIPT There is a quote all over the Catholic internet attributed to Pope Benedict XVI that he never actually said, just like many quotes attributed to people, especially saints, that they never said. Sometimes these quotes are a "mashing together" of various things they said over a period of time, and then authors and internet types take huge liberties and arrange separate thoughts, putting them together as though it was one continual utterance. The specific quote attributed to Pope Benedict we are referencing is "The world offers you comfort, but you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness." While the gist of that is true, it's not what he said. It likely arose from a combination of things he said at various talks and what he wrote in his 2007 encyclical, Spe Salvi, which translates to "saved in hope." What he wrote is "Man was created for greatness — for God Himself; he was created to be filled by God. But his heart is too small for the greatness to which it is destined. It must be stretched." Anything outside of life with God and in God, sooner or later, is found wanting, insufficient. What he spoke at various times were things like "Man is not created for comfort." So, yes, the upshot is that we are not made for ease, but for God. Good enough. But there is something much deeper here, and it's something that has been glossed over for decades and downplayed by Church leaders: Man has zero capability of achieving greatness. God alone bestows greatness because greatness, properly understood, is life with God. Anything outside of life with God and in God, sooner or later, is found wanting, insufficient. Yet, a veritable cornucopia of insufficient, temporary satisfactions is placed before us by the millions, comfort offered over greatness. The first step to life with God is a rejection of these false gods — and there are many of them. This is, for example, the chief error of James Martin when he preaches to confused audiences of homosexuals, who are mostly baptized Catholics. It is also the chief error of the hierarchy, which stays silent about his evil. At its heart, accepting comfort over greatness is a violation of the First Commandment, "You shall have no other gods besides Me." Yet to choose comfort over greatness is precisely that — opting for a fake god over God Himself. So how does one aspire to greatness — not achieve it, just aspire to it? We never achieve greatness. God grants it. Note, for example, the Tower of Babel account. It states specifically that they desire to be great; it's the motivation for their action. God wiped out those plans. But then He shuffled over to Ur and spoke to Abram saying, "I will make of you a great nation." It is God alone Who bestows greatness; we just need to be worthy of receiving it and worthiness comes through our actions. "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments." Love entails rejecting comfort when it becomes a block to becoming worthy. Ultimately, it demands sacrifice — and not just some sacrifice that is normal and usual in the day-to-day of human life. Even atheists make sacrifices, sometimes repeatedly. But the sacrifice must entail the view — the intention — to be made for greatness with God. Sacrifice on its own is meaningless. In fact, sacrifice is woven into the fabric of daily life even for the most selfish person. A selfish person works and "sacrifices" some of his wealth for a house, food, car and so forth. Ultimately, all sacrifice is just an exchange of one thing for another, a thing you hold valuable for something you consider more valuable. But unless the object of the exchange is God, it will ultimately disappoint. Food perishes; houses need constant repair and upkeep; cars break down. No earthly comfort ever suffices. Sex, money, power and drugs are all oriented toward self and have no substance to bring about greatness. The Christian life is the Cross, the sacrifice here for the reward later. It's so basic, you say. But if it's so basic, why do we never hear about it? The Christian life is the Cross, the sacrifice here for the reward later. The James Martins of the world, the U.S. bishops and the worldwide hierarchy are constructing a "Tower of Babel," looking to establish some kind of "great" civilization of controlling the climate, reimagining nations and so forth. Like in the Old Testament, it will be brought to ruin. It's just too bad that so many leaders in the Church have cast their lot with those building the tower, as opposed to those being chosen by God for greatness.
