One of Australia's most significant artists returns to the podcast! Del Kathryn Barton spoke with me the day before the opening of her spectacular exhibition ‘the women who fell to earth' at Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery, showing until 28 May 2022. Internationally renowned, Del is well known in Australia for having won the country's most famous art prize twice - the Archibald Prize - and her works are held in many private collections and public institutions. This year the National Gallery of Australia acquired her largest single-panel work she has made to date, 'my heart is blazing 11 hours', and we talk about the work in this episode. Although difficult to describe in words, Del's work often depicts a female sensuality which is at the same time beautiful and confrontational - set in an intricately detailed imaginary world. She is also a self-described optimist and the work hanging in this exhibition is a testament to that, with vivid colour bursting from the canvas. We also discuss other art forms she has recently been engaged in, including a major project she has been developing over the last 4 years which has now come to fruition. Del's first feature film 'Blaze', a very personal work which she directed and co-wrote, is debuting at the Tribeca Film festival in June and it's one of only 10 films selected in the International Narrative competition. It has also been selected for Official Competition in the upcoming Sydney film festival, again one of only ten films selected internationally. You'll also hear about the origins of her arresting timber sculptures included in the exhibition. Large shell forms inlaid with exquisite materials which reference very personal themes. To hear the conversation press 'play' beneath the above feature photo. You can hear the previous 2019 podcast interview where Del talks about her life and art here. A short video of highlights of this conversation will be uploaded to the Talking With Painters YouTube channel in the coming weeks.  Current exhibition 'the women who fell to earth' at Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery, Sydney, 6 May to 28 May 2022'Blaze at the Tribeca Film Festival on 9, 10 and 17 June 2022'Blaze' at the Sydney Film Festival, 17, 18 and 19 June 2022 Links to things we talk about on the show Del Kathryn Barton on InstagramDel Kathryn Barton at Roslyn Oxley 9Del Kathryn Barton at Albertz Benda Talking With Painters YouTube channel'Blaze' at the Tribeca Film Festival'Blaze' at the Sydney Film Festival the women who have gathered for the earth, 2021-22acrylic on linen203 x 353 cmSource: Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery website the women who came from the earth, 2022acrylic on linen203 x 303 cm her earth nature, 2022acrylic on linen243 x 203 cmSource: Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery website of her own nature, 2022Cambia Ash with Cambia Ash and Rock Maple inlay, Abalone Blue and White Fresh Water mother of pearl inlay, hardwax oil, blackened steel190 x 100 x 80 cm

Who can teach us an AND way of thinking, particularly when confronting the really big questions, the really big problems we face? You may love or hate people like Elon Musk, Richard Branson, or Jeff Bezos, but as a leader, you likely do want to know what drives them to extraordinary heights? One thing is certain, these individuals tend to be solution-based not in an either-or but very much in an AND way. Questions posed 1) From Spain to Hollywood, tell us about your journey to become an award-winning film editor? 2) Is film editing an “Invisible art” 3) Are women under-represented in this side of the industry? 4) Your family describes you as a fighter from day one, would you agree? 5) Whats has been your favourite project so far and why? 6) What do you think are the strengths of the Spanish film industry? 7) I have read with interest some of the charities you support. Could you tell me more about those, and will we see some projects based on those charities in the future? 8) What do you have planned project-wise for the near future? 9) Finally, what would be your advice to anyone wanting to explore film editing. Huge thanks to Carla for this opportunity and to Espada PR for co-ordinating. Follow Espada PR on Instagram here.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo detailed his plans to use rapid coronavirus testing in 2021 to reopen restaurants, theaters and arts venues -- including New York City’s Tribeca Film festival in June -- even before most New Yorkers are vaccinated.

Filmmaking Confidential

Like many film hopefuls, Ronni started making films at about 9 years old when his father bought one of the first camcorder backpack units that had come on the market. He remade classics such as Faces of Death and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with his Brooklyn neighborhood friends. Since then, his films have screed at festivals around the world as well as museums and institutions ranging from Carnegie Hall and The MET in NY to the Horniman Museum in the UK. They've been Honored by BAFTA, Tribeca Film Institute, Raindance Film UK, The British Independent Film Awards and many other prestigious venues. Ronni got his official start in film at Troma in 2000, producing DVD content for the legendary horror outfit. From there, he teamed up with underground maverick Lech Kowlaski (DOA, The Boot Factory) and together they made Hey Is Dee Dee Home with Punk icon Dee Dee Ramone. Eventually he found his place in short film and digital content working heavily with Morbid Anatomy and the now defunct Brooklyn Observatory. His award winning short narrative Radio Girl featured collaboration with long time composer and friend Stephen Coates (The Real Tuesday Weld) and The Witch director, Robert Eggers. His Midnight Archive web series went on to critical acclaim both on the small and big screens, garnering praise from Time.com to boingboing and io9, to Forbes magazine, before being co-opted for Discovery Channel's digital network. His short doc Walter Potter : The Man Who Married Kittens, would be nominated for best short at the prestigious Tribeca Film festival, Raindance Film Fest, and Hot Springs International and wind honors at Morbido fest Puebla, Mexico. His AMC digital series ‘The Broken and the Bad’ is a 6 film docu-series on the real-life themes of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul and features Giancarlo Esposito.

Podcast #18 gives us a chance to speak with hedge fund manager and documentary producer, John Fichthorn, about his documentary, "Betting on Zero".   John co-founded Dialectic Capital Management, LLC in 2003 and serves as its Portfolio Manager. "Betting on Zero" offers an inside look at the controversy behind multi-level marketing companies and the gamesmanship that occurs on Wall Street . The documentary follows Bill Ackman, principal of Pershing Square, and the impact on Herbalife after Ackman makes a billion dollar bet against the company. The film documents the short position and the conflict it causes between Ackman, Herbalife CEO Michael Johnson and Wall Street titan, Carl Icahn.  BOZ also follows the stories of former distributors and employees of Herbalife and provides examples of the controversial impacts Herbalife has had on the communities it serves.  The film is available on iTunes, Google Play and Netflix. We cover a lot in a short amount of time including what made the story interesting for John and how he and director, Ted Braun, were able to get the amazing access.  Finally, we hear about the business (or lack thereof) of documentaries and some of John's future plans. [*THERE IS NO INVESTMENT ADVICE IN THE PODCAST] QUESTIONS Bill Ackman is a huge figure in the shadowy world of hedge funds and his flirtation with Herbalife has become the stuff of legends. How did you become interested in the man and this particular trade? Why was it important to produce a documentary on the subject? You have a pretty high stress day job . . . How did you become involved with the project? How was the team assembled?  How was the director, Ted Braun, chosen and who were the other driving factors behind the project? The film ultimately comes down to two strong-minded characters, Michael Johnson, then CEO of Herbalife, who believes in the promise and growth of Herbalife, and Bill Ackman who has bet a substantial amount of money that company will fail. In short strokes, take us through why there is such a divergence of opinion as to whether Herbalife is thriving business or a recipe for failure. The film takes great pains to present the various impacts that Herbalife has on its employees, customers and investors. How were these constituencies assembled? In a world of regulations, compliance and other red-tape snarls, I was stunned that Johnson and Ackman provided as much access as the did. How did you get these two figure heads to agree to appear? How did you get them comfortable with the idea of a documentary? One of the key subplots, is there emergence of Carl Ichan, another famous financier, who emerges later in the process and seems to relish, not only profiting on the other side of the Ackman trade, but in embarrassing him as well. How much of that goes on in finance?  When the investments become emotional/personal? When does it become a bet more than an investment? Since the film was released, Michael Johnson has left Herbalife. Governmental investigations haven’t yielded any particular smoking guns. Without having to get too specific, what are the implications of these events? What do you see going forward? The film has a had a nice reception at the Southampton and Tribeca Film festivals. And it’s now on Netflix . . . What is the plan for the documentary now? I was part of a low-budget horror movie and I learned first-hand that movie-making isn’t for sissies. Now that you have one under your belt, has it become an addiction? Are there any other stories that you would like to see told? What is the best way for people to see the “Betting on Zero”?
