Send us a textA tale of secret codes and early computers! Alan Turing was a British mathematician and thinker who helped turn the tide of World War II for the United Kingdom and its allies. His groundbreaking work also laid the foundation for much of the technology we use today. As a child, Alan loved solving puzzles—like tracking the patterns of bees—and as a teen, he spent many late nights working through challenging math problems. From imagining the Turing Machine to cracking the uncrackable Enigma Code, Alan's story is one of brilliance, perseverance, and bravery. He didn't always fit in, but his unique way of thinking changed the world.Go to the episode webpage: https://jonincharacter.com/alan-turing/              Get a free activity guide on Alan Turing: https://dorktalesstorytime.aweb.page/ep112freePDF If you enjoyed this story about Alan Turing, you may also enjoy learning about Mary Golda Ross, another STEM hero of history whose early work in space exploration helped put humans into space: https://jonincharacter.com/mary-golda-ross/ CREDITS: Hidden Heroes of History is a Jonincharacter production. AI can do many things equally well as humans: such as writing plausible prose or answering exam questions. In certain domains, AI goes far beyond human capabilities — playing chess for instance. We might expect that nothing prevents machines from one day besting humans at every task. Indeed, it is often asserted that, in principle, everything (and more) within the range of human cognition will one day fall within the ken of AI.But what if there are concepts and ways of thinking that are off-limits to any machine, yet not so for humans? Selmer Bringsjord, Professor in Cognitive Science at RPI joins us this week and argues we need to rethink human thought.Selmer argues that humans have been able to grasp problems that machines cannot — humans are capable of hypercomputation. Hypercomputation is computation above the Turing limit, as such it can solve problems beyond the power of any machine we can currently conceive. In particular, Turing computation cannot encompass infinitary logic, yet humans have been able to reason effectively about the infinite. Similarly, Gödel's theorem points to a class of riddles machines cannot reach, yet human genius has identified. This is a huge topic, accepting Selmer's arguments entails accepting that human minds work in a way that evades our understanding — their mechanisms obeying mechanics of which we are wholly ignorant.Whether or not you agree with Selmer's conclusions, this is a brilliant exploration of the boundaries of thought.Links Selmer's Academic Homepage RPI AI and Reasoning Lab (RAIR)

Here we are in October, improbably enough, and while the leaves start to fall as the goblins begin to gather, Elliot and Dan took a break from the madness to talk about all the wonderful hacks that graced our pages this week. If there was a theme this week, it was long-term projects, like the multiple years one hacker spent going down dead ends in the quest for DIY metal 3D printing. Not to be outdone, another hacker spent seven years building a mirrorless digital camera that looks like a commercial product. And getting a solderless PCB to do the blinkenlight thing took a long time too. Looking to eliminate stringing in your 3D prints? Then you'll want to avoid the "pause and attach" approach, which intentionally creates strings in your prints. Wondering if you can 3D print bearings? You can, but you probably shouldn't unless you have a particular use in mind. And what happens when you have an infinitely large supply of Lego? Why, you build a Turing machine on steroids, of course. Finally, we take a look at this week's "Can't-Miss" articles with a look into plastic recycling and why we can't have nice things yet, and we take a trip out into orbit and examine the ins and outs of Lagrange points. And a little mea culpa from the editing desk: Sorry the podcast is coming out late this week. Audacity ate my files. If you're ever in a similar circumstance, you can probably halfway save your bacon with audacity-project-tools. Ask me how I know. Check out the links over at Hackaday.

In mathematics and computer science, an algorithm is a finite sequence of mathematically rigorous instructions, typically used to solve a class of specific problems or to perform a computation. Most people understand them to be a process that drives media, specifically social media, by connecting people's likes, wants and desires in entertainment. Joel breaks down the complex ideas of what algorithms do from Alan Turing's Turing Machine and Turing Test, the difference between narrow and general artificial intelligence and AI's ability to replace humans. He then goes into the industries that artificial intelligence is set to take over, from the military industrial complex to all forms of media.  Website: https://linktr.ee/joelthomasmedia Follow: Instagram | X | Facebook Watch: YouTube | Rumble Music: YouTube | Spotify | Apple Music Films: merkelfilms.com Email: freetherabbitspodcast@gmail.com Distributed by: merkel.media Produced by: @jack_theproducer OUTRO MUSIC Joel Thomas - Adiós YouTube | Apple | Spotify

After catching up, it's time to decrypt cyphers with Alexis, who introduces us to Turing Machine, a very good "multiplayer solo" puzzle game with sort-of-programmable states (do you see the tech imprint in this intro? The game's good if you are into puzzles, don't worry). Next, there's a true solo game, with recent Unreliable Wizard reprint by Salt and Pepper games (give me a subscription to Kamibayashi games!) and its fake 16-bit pixel goodness - yeah, no way those sprites that big would fit 8-bit engines. Finally, it's time for a very special episode of Cara's Reviews, with Artisans of Splendent Vale, a daring attempt at mixing compartmented campaign story with unique characters' viewpoints and clever asymmetric resource management. Is this enough to kindle your curiosity?

This is: Claude 3 Opus can operate as a Turing machine, published by Gunnar Zarncke on April 18, 2024 on LessWrong. Posted on Twitter: Opus can operate as a Turing machine. given only existing tapes, it learns the rules and computes new sequences correctly. 100% accurate over 500+ 24-step solutions (more tests running). for 100% at 24 steps, the input tapes weigh 30k tokens*. GPT-4 cannot do this. Here is the prompt code for the Turing machine: https://github.com/SpellcraftAI/turing This is the fully general counterpoint to the @VictorTaelin's A::B challenge (he put money where his mouth is and got praise for that from Yudkowsky). Attention is Turing Complete was a claim already in 2021: Theorem 6 The class of Transformer networks with positional encodings is Turing complete. Moreover, Turing completeness holds even in the restricted setting in which the only non-constant values in positional embedding pos(n) of n, for n N, are n, 1/n, and 1/n2 , and Transformer networks have a single encoder layer and three decoder layer Thanks for listening. Finally, we get to the puzzle game called Turing Machine, a game definitely good for people who like logic puzzles but terrible for those who don't.   Join our Discord! https://discord.gg/4pVkZUPhJm Check out our Youtube: www.youtube.com/@TheBoardGameDojo   Support us Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/BoardGameDojo Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theboardgamedojo   Follow us on: Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheBGDojo Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/boardgamedojo/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@boardgamedojo

Big Think
Einstein's equations and the enigma of wormholes | Janna Levin

Big Think

Quantum wormholes are mathematically possible — but might also be physically impossible. Physicist Janna Levin explains the wormhole paradox. Theoretical cosmologist Janna Levin challenges long-held assumptions about the behavior of black holes, information conservation, and the fundamental nature of space, time, and gravity. She uses black holes to explore the physical feasibility of wormholes: theoretical passages or tunnel-like structures that connect separate points in spacetime. Stephen Hawking proposed that black holes emit energy via quantum particles, causing them to eventually evaporate and challenge the conservation of information. The holographic principle suggests that information is encoded on a black hole's surface, addressing the information paradox. Levin metaphorically likens black holes to embroidery, woven from quantum threads. Her quantum perspective has profound implications, potentially altering our understanding of gravity and spacetime's fundamental nature — even questioning our pursuit of a theory of everything. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Go Deeper with Big Think: ►Become a Big Think Member Get exclusive access to full interviews, early access to new releases, Big Think merch and more ►Get Big Think+ for Business Guide, inspire and accelerate leaders at all levels of your company with the biggest minds in business -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About Janna Levin: Janna Levin is a professor of physics and astronomy at Barnard College of Columbia University.
