Sue Stockdale interviews Ricky Ellcock, a man who defied significant challenges to excel in two remarkable careers: professional cricket and aviation. Raised in impoverished conditions in Barbados, Ricky's journey saw him overcoming racial and socio-economic barriers. His ingenuity as a child, along with his resilience in facing career-ending injuries, led him to become Virgin Atlantic's first Black 747 captain. Ricky shares his experiences of culture shock at an elite English boarding school, fighting through debilitating injuries, battling depression, and ultimately redefining success. His story is one of humour, humility, and relentless determination to achieve one's dreams, and serves as a powerful inspiration for aiming high despite the odds.About Ricky EllcockCaptain Ricky Ellcock was born in 1965 in Redman's Village, St Thomas, Barbados. Are you struggling to connect the dots between agency services and the results you drive for clients? Do you produce leads for clients without being sure if they're following up? What about your own marketing efforts? Do you have a process in place for outreach and follow-up? Throwing money at marketing initiatives without correctly measuring their performance can leave agencies with unanswered questions and uncertainty. An effective CRM is the answer; which is why today's guest has specialized in helping agencies enhance their sales process with the right tools. In this interview, he talks about some common mistakes agencies make with follow-up and processes and how they can improve. Jason Kramer is the founder of Cultivize, a marketing technology company that helps B2B businesses and digital agencies streamline their sales and marketing process and retain more clients. He's one of the world's few certified strategists and implementers for the SharpSpring platform. In this episode, we'll discuss: What to look for in a good CRM platform. Why agencies should insist clients use a CRM. How to improve your agency sales follow-up process.   Subscribe Apple | Spotify | iHeart Radio | Stitcher | Radio FM Sponsors and Resources E2M Solutions: Today's episode of the Smart Agency Masterclass is sponsored by E2M Solutions, a web design, and development agency that has provided white-label services for the past 10 years to agencies all over the world. Get to know your Smart Agency Guest Host: Dr. Jeremy Weisz is the co-founder of Rise25, an agency that helps companies launch and run podcasts profitably. He followed Jason's podcast and eventually joined the mastermind and has been a guest on the podcast before. Today, he's helping Jason bring something new to the Smart Agency podcast audience by interviewing a special guest and getting a new perspective to the show.   Changing Your Niche to Adapt to the Market Back in 2001, Jason Kramer was working at an agency in New York with big clients like Virgin Atlantic Airways. After 9/11, the agency went from 60+ people to 14 people very quickly. At the time, he was already doing some freelance work on the side so his choices seemed clear. He could either go work for another big agency or he could start his own business. That decision led to starting his first agency, focused on web development services. After a while, it became harder to sustain his business with the emergence of new tools that made website design more accessible. He eventually sold that agency. In his new agency, Jason and his team help B2B businesses and agencies streamline their sales and marketing process and are top Sharpspring integrators. Technology alone doesn't solve problems, so Jason's secret sauce is leveraging his experience in order to identify pain points in his clients' processes. Next, they pair clients up with the right technology to meet their goals. The challenge is having the right team to adopt the technology. It's a lot of moving parts and Jason's key to success is his team's hands-on approach. They're involved from the very beginning and have a deep understanding of how to customize technology to reach clients' goals. What to Look for in a Good CRM Platform When they first start working with Cutlivize, many clients don't have CRM technology in place.  So the first step is to analyze whether or not a SharpSpring is a good fit. Their criteria for a good CRM include intuitive adoption for new users, affordability, and fully inclusive of add-on capabilities. Most of their clientele doesn't have a CRM and is starting from scratch with SharpSpring. About 30% of their clients transition from another CRM platform to SharpSpring with their help. However, that 30% usually needs some convincing to consider the idea of migrating to a new system. When clients are using another platform, they've usually stuck to that technology simply because they've been using it for a long time. Some clients are using dated systems and worry they won't be able to export their data. Another big concern is training the client team on a new CRM. In those cases, Jason asks to see how the company uses this technology on a daily basis. The majority of clients discover they're not actually using the technology as much as they thought. Whatever the concerns, the most important element to ensure a successful migration will be that the sales team is a part of that conversation.   Why Agencies Should Insist Clients Use a CRM The Cultivate team has worked with over 30 agencies helping their clients get more out of a CRM for their clients. Jason says those agencies are leaving money on the table because any agency is only half the equation. They're normally getting leads into the organization. However, it's up to the client to actually talk to those clients, close the deal, and report the results of those leads. You can effectively track your results for clients if they aren't tracking things on their end as well. According to Jason, agencies that don't offer a CRM platform service struggle because the clients don't follow through on those leads. This ultimately affects the results clients see and they will continue to shift agencies. In reality, the problem is the client doesn't have a system in place to track everything. For these cases, Jason's team offer to help with strategic planning and integrating the CRM so they can have transparency to show what's actually working. Additionally, based on their model, it can work as an additional passive revenue stream for the agency. The agency offers value to the client and gets an additional revenue stream for something their team doesn't even have to touch. How to Create an Effective Agency Sales Follow-Up Process Typically, when Jason's team comes in to assess a company they find there's some sort of follow-up process. However, it tends to be inconsistent. Most have no rhyme or reason for their outreach efforts. On the other hand, there are some who are too aggressive with their outreach. They make multiple attempts every week, making phone calls and sending emails, which quickly turns people off. Generally speaking, follow-up should be done in a way that is ethical but also friendly and not overbearing. Additionally, these interactions should be tracked. If you sent 50 quotes, how many of those are likely to close? Which ones do you still need to follow up with? At the end of the day, you want to sell, not be stuck with mundane emails forever. That's why a follow-up process is so important. Prepare templates to ensure you're sending emails that provide value and a reason for reaching out. This empowers the sales team and makes their outreach more effective. What Can You Do to Improve? Understand their goals. The best way to help your client make a decision is to understand them and their business. It can take a few months to get a client going and excited to work with you. If that client usually has a very busy summer season, for instance, explain that your process can take up to three months to get ramped up. Therefore, it's important to get started three months or more before that busy summer season. Providing value and education. Instead of sending back-to-back messages asking when they're going to make a decision, you can explain a little bit about your process, how it's done, and why you'll need a certain amount of time to do it. Educating the client and providing information is helpful without being pushy. Do You Want to Transform Your Agency from a Liability to an Asset? Good morning everyone! Thank you for listening to the Motivated Entrepreneurs podcast. Today is Saturday and we have the book review called "Losing My Virginity" by Richard Branson. In little more than twenty-five years, Richard Branson spawned nearly a hundred successful ventures. From the airline business (Virgin Atlantic Airways), to music (Virgin Records and V2), to cola (Virgin Cola), and others ranging from financial services to bridal wear, Branson has a track record second to none. Many of his companies were started in the face of entrenched competition. The experts said, "Don't do it." But Branson found golden opportunities in markets in which customers have been ripped off or underserved, where confusion reigns and the competition is complacent. 5 Things In 15 Minutes The Podcast: Bringing Good Vibes to DEI

Today our Senior Consultant Patti Flynn is joining me as a guest writer. This week was (and still is through today) Trans Awareness Week. This week culminates in the Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR) tomorrow, on November 20th. TDOR was started in 1999 by a transgender advocate as a vigil to the memory of Rita Hester who was killed in anti-transgender violence. The somber nature of the end of the week stands in contrast to the prior 7 days when trans people (and cisgender allies) educate and take action. We bring attention to and lift up the work of trans creators, celebrate the success of trans people in public life, and amplify the voices of trans advocates and activists. We show the world our shared humanity and I hope that leads to more acceptance and less discrimination.Although my TDOR this year will be extra difficult as I say the name of a dear friend, I know that the example she provided to so many when she was with us here in Chicago resonates. Her advocacy and activism inspire my own, and that of many others. So, while we mourn those losses, we look forward to a brighter future. A future that is truly possible with some help from our (cis) friends. There are ways that you can help as an ally. Find a vigil in your area and go to support those there grieving, keeping in mind that this event is by and for the trans community. Seek out information about anti-trans legislation in your state, or a neighboring state, and contact your representative to register your opposition, and encourage others to do the same. And lastly, educate yourself – watching the documentary “Disclosure” on Netflix is a good starting point. No longer would a shopping journey be defined by SKU count – how many units you could cram on the floor - but how the experience connected you to the magic of a brand in truly innovative way. It elevated the product to fine art or fine jewelry, which was probably appropriate since is was competing for attention with some of the most recognized retailers on the planet, like Tiffany, just a block away. That paradigm shift in retail store design was born our of a white paper on why Apple should have its own stores after entering the personal computer market and bringing their products to consumers through third party sellers. After designing MacWorld events for Steve Jobs and Apple some years before, Tim Kobe and his Architecture and Design firm Eight Inc. was challenged with the task of creating the first Apple stores. They have held that relationship for the last 20+ years.Sometimes called “Apple’s best kept secret” Eight Inc. is one of the most progressive design firms working today. 8 is helping to transform organizations to be relevant in the worlds most highly competitive environments by looking at the design factors that drive successful human interactions. Tim Kobe is a design leader, Founder and CEO of Eight Inc. Virgin Atlantic Airways has filed for Chapter 15 bankruptcy protection in New York, the United States, as the global airline industry reels from the coronavirus pandemic. The protection under chapter 15 of the US bankruptcy code allows a foreign debtor to shield assets in the country. The crisis-hit Airline in July received a £1.2 billion ($1.5 billion) rescue deal to keep it solvent just days before it was due to resume passenger flights. The carrier said the recapitalisation plan would be deployed over 18 months and has the support of shareholders, new investors and existing creditors. Virgin Atlantic’s US bankruptcy court filing stated that it had negotiated a deal with stakeholders for a consensual recapitalization that will get debt off its balance sheet and immediately position it for sustainable long-term growth. --- This episode is sponsored by · Afrolit Podcast: Hosted by Ekua PM, Afrolit shares the stories of multi-faceted Africans one episode at a time. https://open.spotify.com/show/2nJxiiYRyfMQlDEXXpzlZS?si=mmgODX3NQ-yfQvR0JRH-WA Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/newscast-africa/support

From the airline business (Virgin Atlantic Airways), to music (Virgin Records and V2), to cola (Virgin Cola), and others ranging from financial services to bridal wear, Branson has a track record second to none. Many of his companies were started in the face of entrenched competition. The experts said, “Don’t do it.” But Branson found golden opportunities in markets in which customers have been ripped off or underserved, where confusion reigns, and the competition is complacent. Finding my Virginity Twenty years after his iconic memoir Losing My Virginity, the world’s ultimate entrepreneur is back with the rest of the story. Richard Branson’s Losing My Virginity shared the outrageous tale of how he built Virgin from a student magazine into one of the greatest brands in history. No challenge was too daunting, no opportunity too outlandish to pursue. And each new adventure started with five simple words: “Screw it, let’s do it.” Now, fifty years after starting his first business, Branson shares the candid details of a lifetime of triumphs and failures and what he really thinks about his unique life and career. Finding My Virginity is an intimate look at his never-ending quest to push boundaries, break rules, and seek new frontiers—even after launching a dozen billion-dollar businesses and hundreds of other companies. Source: amazon.com About the Author Sir Richard Charles Nicholas Branson (born 18 July 1950) is an English business magnate, investor, and philanthropist. He is best known as the founder of Virgin Group, which comprises more than 400 companies. Branson expressed his desire to become an entrepreneur at a young age. At the age of sixteen his first business venture was a magazine called Student. In 1970, he set up a mail-order record business. In 1972, he opened a chain of record stores, Virgin Records, later known as Virgin Megastores. Branson’s Virgin brand grew rapidly during the 1980s, as he set up Virgin Atlantic and expanded the Virgin Records music label. In March 2000, Branson was knighted at Buckingham Palace for “”services to entrepreneurship””. In July 2015, Forbes listed Branson’s estimated net worth at US $5.2 billion. Let’s do it. There’s a theme of adventure and fun throughout the two books and Branson’s life. At the back of the more recent book, Finding my Virginity, there are even 75 near death experiences that he has encountered, all listed in chronological order! He is famous as the founder of the Virgin brand but is maybe equally famous for his extreme sports adventures. Between the two books, Losing my Virginity has more of the ‘Screw it. Let’s do it.’ feel because this is what fuelled the early endeavours Richard built and his approach to his way of living and the way he runs his businesses.  It also goes to his desire to get into and shake up the industries who’ve been complacent and have forgotten their customers; particularly airlines and telecommunication.  BIG IDEA 2 (8:11) – Challenges are there to be overcome. When you read even the first 50 pages of the first book Losing my Virginity, you feel that so many people would have given up with the challenges Branson faced. But, he is the master of overcoming challenges. From how he started his first student magazine to the huge endeavour of Virgin Galactic, and everything in between, there have always been challenges. This also includes some of the ‘failures’, such as when market forces turned against him and the impact of the change in online media and music consumption rather than people going to record stores. There was also examples of challenges with competitors (eg BA dirty tricks campaign) and regulators in the early days of Virgin airlines and even some tragedies that happened in his brands and business ventures over the years. In all of these challenges, he always rolls with the punches, gets back up and keeps fighting. BIG IDEA 3 (10:36) – Find your people and take care of them.  Both books talk a lot about those people who were behind his success. From his parents, his wife Joan, to all of his teams who developed with him the Virgin brands.  Everyone thinks that Branson is a crazy risk taker but when you read the book and see the thinking behind certain ideas, you’ll see that he is actually very measured.  He knows his strengths and skills and he surrounds himself with people who offset them or add to them. The book Finding my Virginity is a bit more reflective, a lot more about space exploration and around the idea of passing on and giving back – including one of the founding members of Nelson Mandela’s ‘the elders’. He is also heavily involved in charity work and helping people create opportunities through entrepreneurship. As Steve Jobs says, you can only join the dots when you look back.I started straight from University as a trainee journalist at BBC Radio Wales interviewing everyone from heavyweight champion of the world Lennox Lewis, to leader of the opposition Neil Kinnock. I now feel life's come full circle as I'm back in the audio space, helping leading brands & entrepreneurs tell their stories through the power of podcasting. In between I'd had my head turned & left to see the world with Virgin Atlantic Airways. Then Inspired by my boss, Sir Richard Branson, I left Virgin to set up my own business.I'm now the founder of the Screw It, Just Do It podcast agency. From initially launching my own show and receiving two downloads, to last year getting a #1 rated business show from the UK to Uganda and downloaded in 140+ countries, I passionately believe that everybody deserves to be heard & everybody should have their own voice. Podcasting is a great enabler in this regard. More than anything, it has been about the people I have met. Great leaders of hugely successful businesses such as Innocent's Richard Reed, Ted Baker's Ray Kelvin CBE, Not On The High Street's Holly Tucker MBE. People I would have never got to have met without my podcast, and who have grown my network immeasurably. In hindsight, I wish I'd asked Richard more questions as we used to see a lot of him in the early days of the airline. When I re-joined Virgin, in the guise of his not-for-profit Virgin StartUp, helping entrepreneurs get funding & mentoring, he was living on Necker Island! My biggest takeaways when it comes to leadership was seeing how well he recruited people who had skills he didn't. How he empowered them by giving them autonomy, by delegating, and by creating an incredibly positive company culture.I am also an advisor for global startup-generator and VC, Antler.co, whilst I also chair the Accelerate Event Series for British American Business - the US Chamber of Commerce in the UK. Welcome to this week's solo episode, #164. It was ten years this week that I left full-time employment at Virgin Atlantic Airways and decided to enter the world of entrepreneurship.  9/9/09 I like the symmetry. Since then I have started four different businesses. I've had my share of both success and failures. I've learnt that there is no 'secret formula', no 'secret sauce' to running a successful business. There is also no such thing as an 'overnight success'. This has been borne out throughout the two and a half years I've been hosting this podcast, backed up by countless entrepreneurs that I've interviewed. If you think you don't know what you're doing, then join the club. Everyone's winging it when they start. Tony Robbins defines F.E.A.R as "F**k Everything And Run". So many people quit when they're within touching distance of success. But most people quit way before then. When it comes to podcasting, most people quit after 6, 8 or 10 episodes when they haven't reached #1 yet. Likewise I always used to see new business owners write a weekly blog for 2 or 3 months and then quit. That's why I got ranked #1 for all the keywords I needed to be ranked for in my first business. because I kept going. I'm super-proud of this podcast reaching #164 episodes. Last week, we were even the #2 entrepreneurship podcast in Algeria behind Gary Vaynerchuk! How random is that! I know I've said this before, but there really has never been a better time to start a business. The speed of communication, the speed with which you can get things done because of the internet, mobile phones has never been quicker. But you've got to start. And it doesn't matter with what. Just do something. Take the next step. There's not a right or wrong. Just do one thing to move yourself and your business forward. And do the same the next day. And the next. Then you'll build momentum. You've just got to keep going. Don't quit when the going gets tough - and it will - just keep going. Over time, your network will grow, your resources will grow, your knowledge will grow. Which you can then leverage to make your business a success, and reach your goals, fulfil your dreams. It's only now, after ten years, that I feel like an unstoppable force. That I'm doing the right thing at the right time, and for the right reasons. I love podcasting, and I now love making podcasts for other people - helping them tell their stories through the power of a podcast. Next week see's the release of the first of many new podcast releases from me and my team, and I for one can't wait. So don't be discouraged when you haven't reached your goals yet. If it was easy - everybody would be an entrepreneur. You've got to be in it for the long haul. You've got to be patient, determined and able to persevere. Let's StartUp!

You might be wondering why the title of today’s episode is “screw it, let’s do it!” That phrase is certainly relatable to a couple of things in life, but in today’s episode, it’s specific to a travel promotion by Virgin Atlantic Airways that was released last Friday. The title of the promotion was “screw it, let’s do it!” and it was a limited time promotion. The promotion was for a £50 (approx $70 USD) return ticket from London to Miami, and it was limited to just 50 people, however one person could claim up to four tickets for their friends. But as with any promo, there was a catch! In this episode, we share exactly how this promotion worked, how I got it, and all the catches, tips and tricks in between. #16: Food Porn Meets Social Media: SORTED FOOD

"It's cool to be a foodie now. Whereas it used to be a very niche thing, all over now..whether it's pop-up food markets or open kitchen restaurants... food on TV, and in the real world, is a kind of cool space to be in." On this week's show I speak to Ben, Jamie, Mike and Barry who launched SORTED food in 2010 after finishing university.  The Wall Street Journal calls their show "food porn meets social media" whilst The Independent calls them "the food equivalent of Instagram or Spotify". They describe their own show as a "mix of food, recipes, video and banter". With over TWO million social followers including Barrack Obama and David Cameron, and ELEVEN million downloads per month, I spoke with the guys to find out how they became the world's most engaged cooking channel - that's also inspiring a younger generation to think more about what they eat. Also on today's show I speak to Raise Bakery's Jeremy Jacobs. I spoke with Jeremy on how he took voluntary redundancy to help his mum launch a family business. With his dad onboard they went from strength to strength, at one time supplying Virgin Atlantic Airways with over four million cupcakes.  It hasn't always been a smooth ride but it's all been invaluable in bringing the family closer together and in giving back to the startup community through Jeremy's voluntary work as a Virgin StartUp mentor and 'entrepreneur in residence at Brighton & Hove's City College.
