How can a straw make us better singers? Oren Boder is an award winning singing teacher, voice researcher, entrepreneur, and inventor of the SOVT Singing Straw. Oren joins Alexa this week on Singing Teachers' Talk to tell us all about what SOVT is, how it works, and how it can help us as singing teachers.    KEY TAKEAWAYS Oren didn't set out to write a book, he took all the recorded talks he'd done in the past and ran them through an AI transcriber. He then took the bits that sounded good and tweaked them.  A Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract (SOVT) means there is some sort of narrowing somewhere along the vocal tract, which is anywhere from the vocal cords to the lips. Semi-occluded vocal tract: Say the OO /u/, V /v/, Z /z/, J /ʤ/, or M /m/ sounds - notice how your lips and/or teeth come together to shape the sound. This also happens with a lip or a tongue trill - the airflow is “semi” closed off to make a sound. Fully closed vocal tract: Close your mouth and purse your lips together. Your vocal tract is closed (except for your nasal passage for breathing). SOVT exercises can improve the conditions inside the throat as your vocal cords are vibrating. They do this by neutralising the pressure that is coming up from the lungs. When you have a semi-occluded vocal tract, some of the airflow is blocked from exiting the mouth, because your lips and/or teeth are closing off the airflow as you say “OO”, “ZZ”, “VV”, etc. This airflow is reflected back towards the vocal cords (see the following pages for drawings) and pushes back against the vocal cords from the top. This pushing from the top will balance out the pressure that is being pushed up from below from the lungs, and this allows your vocal cords to vibrate more efficiently (not too pressed or strained, not too breathy). cmH2O is a pressure unit that is mostly used to measure breathing on respirators and ventilators which are used in medical and physiological applications such as controlling respiratory conditions or monitoring athletic performance.   BEST MOMENTS ‘It's like a Swiss army knife of techniques'  ‘We never want to train in the extreme because we don't want to be under loading or overloading our voice' ‘We can get a minimum of 40 resistance configurations from one device, it can be infinite' ‘The products we have designed have been designed by an aerospace engineer'    EPISODE RESOURCES  BAST Training    Guest Website Website: www.rayvox.co.uk   Social Media: Instagram: @sovtstraw   Relevant Links & Mentions:  Singing Through A Straw Can Make You An Awesome Singer by Oren Boder Singing Teachers Talk: Episode 30 - Clearing the Brain Fog with John Henny: Covid-19, Acoustics, Passive Income & The Teaching Triangle Balloon Activity for Maximum Threshold Pressure (MPT) (shared by Chris Johnson with credit to Kerrie Obert)   ABOUT THE GUEST  Oren is an award winning singing teacher, voice researcher, entrepreneur, and inventor of the SOVT Singing Straw, and is proudly supported by both the Prince's Trust and Virgin Startup. Oren believes in enriching lives through the arts, and through the pursuit of meaningful science, develops innovative tools and resources to help singers enhance and improve their vocal development, health, and wellbeing, whilst also having an impact on the universe. Oren's journey started at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, where he trained in singing and vocal technique, as well as studying internationally in Holland in collaboration with the London College of Music, and then with New York Vocal Coaching (NYVC). Oren also holds a degree in Psychology. His current pedagogical focus is on researching and developing vocal development tools and techniques that involve singing through straws, using state of the art computer simulations to explore the interactions of airflow and air pressures of different straw types and their effects on the voice.   ABOUT THE PODCAST BAST Training is here to help singers gain the knowledge, skills and understanding required to be a great singing teacher. Alex explains how he has managed to set up successful businesses across several industries. He shares tips to help entrepreneurs to stop procrastinating, take action and find success.   KEY TAKEAWAYS   With a regular job, there is always a ceiling on how much you can earn. It’s not always necessary to take big risks to become a successful entrepreneur. Believe in yourself. Don´t let the doubts of others put you off. You need to be bold, make a decision and take action. Procrastination is your enemy. If you get involved in something and realize it is not for you, don´t be too proud to recognize that fact and change direction. You need tenacity to get you through the tough times. Focus in on one thing at a time. Get that making money, then expand. Don´t overthink things and procrastinate, but make sure that you still do your due diligence.   BEST MOMENTS ‘You can be entrepreneurial within an organization.’ ‘Between success and failure, there is a fine margin. ´ ‘Just be decisive, be bold. ´ ‘Focus in on one thing at a time, get that making money before switching your focus to something else. ´   GUEST RESOURCES Alexander Chisnall Instagram Screw it Just do it Instagram Alex Chisnall Twitter Alex Chisnall LinkedIn The $100 Start-up: Fire Your Boss, Do What You Love and Work Better   ABOUT THE GUEST Alex Chisnall is the host of a #1 rated entrepreneurship show. In this podcast episode I am discussing with Oren Greenberg (London, UK): How do we get the marketing to create a massive pull effect that people leave their comfort zone in order to become clients or passionate employees of this startup. Who is Oren Greenberg? Oren has a highly regarded digital strategy and commercial expertise to offer. His Marketing Consulting is based in London (UK). Oren is a On-Demand CMO, Startup Investor & Advisor. He also a mentor in Virgin Startup, which is a not-for-profit company (founded by Richard Branson) supporting entrepreneurship in the UK . He spends his days helping FTSE 250s and funded startups to navigate the perilous waters of growth and marketing. He has contributed to the growth of client brands including Investec Bank, Peakon, Wonga, Wink Bingo, Nutmeg, Funding Circle, MarketInvoice and innovation incubation projects within Canon, HomeServe. Oren knows how handle the big games in marketing as he managed over £10M marketing budgets. His impressive achievement included paid search campaigns with over 13.7 million key phrases. He is also knowledgable on organic traffic growth and scaling paid search delivery. Oren has been featured in The Telegraph, Social Media Examiner and the HubSpot blog. Oren Greenberg is an instructor on Skillshare and Jolt. This episode's train of thought: Our conversation matches todays challanges of new businesses that are in a situation "David vs Goliath". The discussions concept is based on a scenario where a startup enters a market. 3 big competitors have split up the market betweeen each other (Ratio 100% = 40-30-20-X). Theoretically there is still 10% of untapped market share and a potential that disatisfied customer base and frustrated employees might decide to shift over to the startup. This is where we discuss how such a startup can successfully move up to taking the place of #3 in the market. The startup presumably has sufficient funds through investors. The challange of the business is not money but actually getting clients (60% B2C + 40% B2B) and skilled workers (e.g. engineers, IT, marketeers, etc.). The start up work then led to Alex founding and co-creating some of the UK’s fastest growing business events and subsequently led to him launching his top rated podcast, which resulted in brands and businesses asking him to help them with branded audio so his latest venture was born. The mission of our show is to create a sense of inspiration and aspiration for our community of likeminded go-getters who are the influencers, innovators, creators, makers, builders, crafters and doers who form the next big wave of entrepreneurial success and Alex’s journey of constant evolution and continued opportunist growth definitely offers motivation for others to follow! As Steve Jobs says, you can only join the dots when you look back.I started straight from University as a trainee journalist at BBC Radio Wales interviewing everyone from heavyweight champion of the world Lennox Lewis, to leader of the opposition Neil Kinnock. I now feel life's come full circle as I'm back in the audio space, helping leading brands & entrepreneurs tell their stories through the power of podcasting. In between I'd had my head turned & left to see the world with Virgin Atlantic Airways. Then Inspired by my boss, Sir Richard Branson, I left Virgin to set up my own business.I'm now the founder of the Screw It, Just Do It podcast agency. From initially launching my own show and receiving two downloads, to last year getting a #1 rated business show from the UK to Uganda and downloaded in 140+ countries, I passionately believe that everybody deserves to be heard & everybody should have their own voice. Podcasting is a great enabler in this regard. More than anything, it has been about the people I have met. Great leaders of hugely successful businesses such as Innocent's Richard Reed, Ted Baker's Ray Kelvin CBE, Not On The High Street's Holly Tucker MBE. People I would have never got to have met without my podcast, and who have grown my network immeasurably. In hindsight, I wish I'd asked Richard more questions as we used to see a lot of him in the early days of the airline. When I re-joined Virgin, in the guise of his not-for-profit Virgin StartUp, helping entrepreneurs get funding & mentoring, he was living on Necker Island! My biggest takeaways when it comes to leadership was seeing how well he recruited people who had skills he didn't. How he empowered them by giving them autonomy, by delegating, and by creating an incredibly positive company culture.I am also an advisor for global startup-generator and VC, Antler.co, whilst I also chair the Accelerate Event Series for British American Business - the US Chamber of Commerce in the UK. Why risk so much, might you ask? Because at the time she felt like she had no choice. From her candid thoughts on dealing with the pressure and loneliness that can come when you’re trying to make an impact on a scale unlike anything you’ve ever known before; her practical advice on funding from her initial Virgin Start Up loan of £7000 to selling her flat; to how she uses PTSD from an attack in her early twenties as fire in her belly to fuel her ambition and success going forward; Selma is a woman worthy of every bit of success that comes her way in my opinion and I really hope that you take as much from her story as I did…. Selma is an inspirational mother of one who founded Looks Like Me - a pioneering talent agency challenging racial stereotypes in advertising thanks to the support of Virgin StartUp. Selma has an amazing story and is an inspirational voice to those who are looking to start-up in business or go back to work.Selma started her business in 2016, after her three year-old daughter began questioning her identity and disliking her curly hair as she rarely saw children looking like herself in mainstream media. Selma wanted to create content for her daughter, and others like her, so they no longer felt different. From this lightbulb moment, Looks Like Me was born, the only child talent agency in the UK that champions improving diversity in media. Selma is part of Virgin StartUp's incredible public pledge to commit to a 50/50 funding target for women and men entrepreneurs by the end of 2020, becoming the first business funder in the UK to make this promise. The pledge represents a crucial step towards achieving gender balance for start-up investment in the UK but Virgin StartUp will also address the nationwide barriers faced by many women in business, such as childcare and gender based discrimination, including unconscious bias. Welcome to episode #154: Patience, Plateau's and perseverance. Why do we expect overnight success?   I went for a 5K run the other night to try and beat my personal best. I was initially pissed off that I didn't get it. But in retrospect, I'm more pissed off that I quit. I quit with about 250 yards left to run when I realised that I wasn't going to get a PB.   I know I shouldn't have quit. I should have finished the full 5k.   Why should I expect success when I've only been running 5k's for the last 6 or 7 weeks FFS!   Anything worth achieving takes hard work. If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.   I tried again on Saturday and missed out by 4 just seconds. But I didn't quit this time.   We now live in an on-demand society where we can get virtually anything on demand, a book from amazon, a movie from Netflix, a podcast on iTunes, even a pizza from Dominos.   It wasn't like that when I started this entrepreneurial journey nearly ten years ago now. Couldn't believe that when I realised it. I left Virgin Atlantic on 9/9/09   But it's only now, with the launch of my podcast agency, that I feel I've really found my niche.   And over the last four years I was told today that I helped 300+ entrepreneurs through Virgin Start Up either start a brand new business or grow their existing business in that time.   I've seen so many expect success quickly.   When they don't find success straight away, when it gets hard - and it will - they switch to something else, and quit.   But it doesn't work like that.   The rules of success are the same that they have always been.   You've got to show up every day and put the work in.   I tell my two girls, both dancers, that the most successful ones aren't the one's with the most skills or the biggest talent.   They're the one's who were the most patient and who persevered.   Most people quit whilst they're right on the cusp of success.   Don't let that be you.   Do what your competition isn't prepared to do.   Be patient, learn to weather the plateau's that'll you'll eventually meet - and persevere.   Because if you do you will succeed in the end.

Online marketing basics is where it all begins and in this episode Tim Elliott shares some great content. Nathaniel Schooler 0:37 Today, I'd like to introduce Tim Elliott:- by day he is head of marketing for an acquisition and investment company in the East Midlands in the UK, where he spends his days helping great companies grow. Outside of the day job he has a real passion for startups and was awarded Virgin startup mentor at the start of 2018. So that's quite interesting. And he's also been a Chartered Institute of Marketing tutor. Tim shares some really great information in this episode with me. Well, Hi there, Tim, it's great to have you on the show. I'm really excited about this expert talk today. Because you've got oodles of experience in the marketing world. And yeah, I think it's great. Yeah, great. Great to speak with you again! It all begins with branding :- Luxury Branding with Krug Champagne with Douglas Commaille – Episode 35 Tim Elliott 1:17 Thanks it's good to be here. As usual, share some of my my oodles of experience. 22 years I've been a marketer now, 22! A long time. Nathaniel Schooler 1:29 It's a long time. And so I think the best thing is, we start off with the marketing basics, and we start sort of talk about that, because, you know, everyone today they say it's all about online, right? And yes, online marketing is important, you know, is as well as I do, right. But there is still no substitute for really well targeted piece of mail or, or, or a phone call that is, you know, researched to the point of, you know, where they live, you know, where they're from, you know, you know who their secretary is, you know, who their team are. And if you call them up, you have a proper conversation with someone, there's a lot to be said for that. So, where do we started with marketing basics? Tim Elliott 2:21 I mean, marketing is about people and problems, and not products and services, right. So, you start with people and the people were interested in, in terms of marketing is our customers, right? So, job number one for a marketer in marketing basics terms is to understand your customer as much as you can, right. Get some research on it, look at the previous people who bought them, have conversations with him, you know. Don't use data, talk to people, because conversation just like this one, move stuff forward a lot further, you can support what you learn from that by data and take it wider. But understand your customers as much as you can more than the next guy will help you win at marketing. That's the fundamental starting point and one that people miss all the time doing some good old research. Nathaniel Schooler 3:26 So you would you would potentially do that in with a questionnaire if you if you if you had people who would respond if it was a targeted questionnaire. Because obviously, you can't just send out a questionnaire to people that you don't know, and say:- "I'm thinking about this." You need to, you need to target the right individual. So for an example, whatever, whatever sort of demographic, you're, you're hitting, you're going to hit that particular job description and say. Well, hi, I noticed that you're in such and such a job doing a bit of market research around x, because I know you might use it in your job, could you help me and then and then you've got three questions on a on a questionnaire, Tim Elliott 4:12 three to three to five by three or five a really good numbers, I have no reason why just people respond more if it's three or five, I think it's some deep seated human behavior thing, right. But you've got many ways of doing this, right? If you're an existing business, you have at some point sold to somebody, right? So we bought all of us with existing businesses, we've got clients that we can bring up there are there are, you know, with friendly with if we go, we've got, look, we're doing a bit of research,

And as soon as the W8 Gym came along... it's funny how timing works out, as when Nick approached me I was actually thinking of venturing into fitness. So as soon as I saw the product I just jumped on it..quite literally. This is what I was looking for. This was amazing. Since pooling their skills and resources back in 2016 they applied and received a Virgin StartUp loan and launched JPJ Media. I found out with the three of them to find out how they have got to work with such an amazing client list.

"I have so many different passions: fitness, fashion and food - the three "F's" - plus music of course. So it was a natural progression once I came off the x-factor...to get into fashion and release my own clothing line. And as soon as the W8 Gym came along... it's funny how timing works out, as when Nick approached me I was actually thinking of venturing into fitness. So as soon as I saw the product I just jumped on it..quite literally. This is what I was looking for. This was amazing. You may know Fleur East from the X-Factor, from her Top 3 album, her number one single 'Sax' ...but what you may not know is that she is a female entrepreneur and business woman with her own clothing brand on Lipsy. Now Fleur is related to Nick Meaney..who's related to Clive Payne..who first came up with the idea that became W8 Gym. Having first met me at Jim Cregan's 'Jimmys Iced Coffee' HQ for the first Virgin StartUp meetup outside London eighteen months ago, they are now fuelled with a Virgin StartUp loan. Clive developed the prototype, Nick travelled to China to source suppliers and many iterations later, Fleur designed the final product and filmed all the exercises that W8 Gym allows you to do. Releasing W8 Gym on the crowdfunding site Indiegogo on October 24th, I got all three of them in the studio to hear the full story.

On this week's show I speak to Ben, Jamie, Mike and Barry who launched SORTED food in 2010 after finishing university.  The Wall Street Journal calls their show "food porn meets social media" whilst The Independent calls them "the food equivalent of Instagram or Spotify". They describe their own show as a "mix of food, recipes, video and banter". With over TWO million social followers including Barrack Obama and David Cameron, and ELEVEN million downloads per month, I spoke with the guys to find out how they became the world's most engaged cooking channel - that's also inspiring a younger generation to think more about what they eat. Tom Charman Show Notes Tom started his first technology company at the age of 18 and gave a TEDx talk on the Future of Technology aged 23. He’s represented the UK at four startup world finals, and currently mentors for Startup Weekend and Virgin Startup. He’s advised the UK government on entrepreneurship, was shortlisted for Future Business Leader of the Year and was named one of 20 young entrepreneurs to watch 2017. Most passionate about  Today I’m a co-founder and CEO of COMPAS, it’s a mobile app that uses artificial intelligence to learn users’ interests and needs, and present you with travel recommendations based on your personal interests. We’re currently active in a few cities across Europe and are about to expand to other cities in Europe, and in the rest of the world. What is your next step? We’ve been working on this product for two years. We started the company on April 2015, after I sold my last company. We launched officially on January this year (2017). We are currently raising funds of around Million Pounds to implement some new technologies, expand to more European cities and looking to engage users around the world, once we have presence in these cities. Who your Customers are? It’s best to start with how we learned who our consumers are, so when we started the company, two years ago, we got a blog in order to understand if there is a market. In about six months, we actually had 10000 people who were actively reading our blog every single day. When we looked at the demographic and the total data of those people, we realized that generally speaking, our target market are aged 18 to 34 years old, who live in a city, and want to find things that are different from what they usually find. Differentiation When we decided to go from a blog to a mobile application, we really needed to work out what would make us different from many other applications in this field. The two USPs for us, the first is the fact that we learned so much about the individual making sure that everything that you see is based on who you are and what you would like to do so it’s completely personal to each individual person.  That second USP is the content itself. We make sure that the content we deliver to you… is personal, it’s handpicked, it’s accurate. You won’t find Starbucks or chains, what you find is a unique hidden local place. We really want to support the local businesses. To make sure the places you visit are different, unique, and more enjoyable than the same places that you visit every day. Tom’s best advice about approaching your customer The most important thing is that you understand who your market is, and that you build something that they will use. Too many times I see…entrepreneurs and people who want to start a new business think that because they have the problem, everyone has the problem. So the biggest piece of advice I can give to people, is that before you go out with a product, do everything you can to test it. Go with the minimum viable product, get the product out there, and see what people say about it ,and only then if people really love what you are doing build it and go out with the product. Which is exactly what we did with the blog before we started to build the mobile application. Biggest failure with a customer For me, it was over estimating what I thought people needed. I saw people struggling with particular problem but it was actually a problem that I needed to solve not a problem really needed solving.  So that was about when I realized that instead of spending so much time focusing on what I believe is a problem, I should go out and learn about the bigger problems. Look at the big ideas that can change the world in the future and then use my expertise and my understanding to work towards finding a solution. We built a basic product, we took it out to the market… it was doing OK but it just wasn’t going fast...
