What's up, dudes? Today we're talking about the present Santa brought me for Christmas 1985. Yes, it's the Defender of the Universe itself: Voltron! Joining to dig into these Christmas wishbooks is my buddy Lucas Hinojosa and DJ Chad Sheppard! We dig into the history and awesomeness that is the mighty robot! It's a Voltron Christmas! From days of long ago, from uncharted regions of the universe, comes a legend, the legend of Voltron, Defender of the Universe. A mighty robot, loved by good, feared by evil. As Voltron's legend grew, peace settled across the galaxy. On planet Earth, a galaxy alliance was formed. Together with the good planets of the solar system, they maintained peace throughout the universe. Until a new horrible menace threatened the galaxy. Voltron was needed once more. This is the story of the super force of space explorers, specially trained, and sent by the alliance, to bring back Voltron: Defender of the Universe. The series was primarily edited from Beast King GoLion (Hyakujū-ō Goraion), and it features a team of five young space explorers commanding five robot lions which can be combined to form Voltron. In this undefined future era, the Voltron Force is in charge of protecting the planet Arus, ruled by Princess Allura, from the evil King Zarkon of planet Doom, his son Lotor, and the witch Haggar. Each episode huge killer "ro-beasts" terrorize the people of Arus. In the decades that followed, companies produced Christmas tie-in merchandise, such as ornaments, sweaters, and stockings as well.Lion robots? Check. Flaming swords? For sure. Edited and sanitized original anime for American audiences? I'm looking at you, Sven! So grab your key, hop in your lion, and form your mighty robot to this episode on Voltron Christmas! Give us a buzz! Send a text, dudes!Check us out on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Totally Rad Christmas Mall & Arcade, Teepublic.com, or TotallyRadChristmas.com! Later, dudes!

Shambhavi joins Marc and Greg to review the 8th episode from Season 8 of Voltron Legendary Defender on Netflix: Clear Day. Greg takes us through our Retro Voltron segment with the Voltron: Defender of the Universe episode, Doom Girls on the Prowl. Shambhavi has been on the podcast with us before, most recently on our June 28, 2017 podcast. She is an artist and a huge Voltron fan! You can check out some of things she mentions in this podcast on her Instagram account here: https://www.instagram.com/kadamster Also, follow Shambhavi on Twitter at: https://twitter.com/kadamster In this podcast, we review Clear Day, the 8th episode from Season 8 of Voltron Legendary Defender on Netflix. Here are some of our favorite screenshots from Clear Day: In our Retro Voltron segment, Greg reviews another episode that celebrated a holiday in the original series, Voltron: Defender of the Universe, the 67th episode, Doom Girls on the Prowl. Here is a summary of that episode and some screenshots: Haggar tries to send a baby Ro-beast after Queen Merla, but Merla's pet buzzard catches it. Haggar apologizes, and offers to help Merla conquer Arus. Meanwhile, on Arus, there is a parade taking place honoring the planet's leaders. Merla's forces attack. Keith and Allura try to get the villagers to safety, while Lance, Hunk, and Pidge race to get to their lions. In protecting the villagers, Lance, Hunk, and Pidge get zapped with a freeze ray, and their lions are sent over a cliff, and to the bottom of a canyon. After getting the villagers to the castle, Haggar makes her baby Ro-beast turn into a full sized one, and sicks it on the castle. With the other three frozen, Keith and Allura have to face the monster by themselves. At the end, all of the Voltron Force has statues made of them by the kids they had saved earlier in the episode, and King Alfor's ghost shows his approval of Keith. As Always, Thanks for Listening! Let's Voltron!!

Let's Voltron: The Official Voltron Podcast

Marc and Greg review the 4th Episode of the 8th and final season of Voltron Legendary Defender on Netflix: Battle Scars. Also, for our Retro Voltron segment, Greg details 2 episodes that relate to Battle Scars, 1 from Voltron: Defender of the Universe Lion Force, called Pidge's Home Planet, and 1 from Vehicle Force called Great Stone Space Faces. In Battle Scars, while floating through the universe searching for signs of a Robeast, the Paladins head toward Olkarion and realize they aren't alone on their journey. Here are some of our favorite screenshots from Battle Scars: And from our Retro Voltron Segment, here is the synopsis from Pidge's Home Planet: Princess Allura is preparing for her coronation as the rest of the Voltron Force looks on. After Nanny insults them, the guys decide to check the monitor to see if there is any trouble. They discover that Pidge's home planet, Balto, is under attack by Zarkon's forces. Pidge said that his family was moving to a new planet, but he is not sure if they made it out in time. Keith, Lance, Pidge, and Hunk decide to head for Balto, but are cut off by the castle guards. Coran tells them that they must stay and protect planet Arus. He tries to place them under house arrest, but the Space Explorers quickly subdue the guards and head for Balto. Once there, they are confronted by Lotor and a new Ro-Beast. Back on Arus, Allura receives a telepathic distress message from Keith. She must now decide whether to stay and protect her planet, or to go and help her friends. Here is a screenshot from Pidge's Home Planet: Also from the Retro Voltron segment, here is the synopsis of Great Stone Space Faces: The Voltron Force discovers signs of an ancient civilization on planet Neb. However, the planet is unstable and Nerok is right behind them, ready for an ambush. Hazar meets with his father, Chancellor Mozak, to consider the fate of the Drule Empire. They realize that the empire will lose if they try to attack Earth, and peace is their only long-term option. Here is a screenshot from Great Stone Space Faces: As Always, Thanks for Listening! Marc and Greg were actually TOGETHER at RetroCon 2018, for only the 3rd time ever! And what an occasion for the hosts of Let's Voltron: The Official Voltron Podcast to combine like Voltron! We are honored to have RetroCon interviews and panel coverage with BJ Ward (Allura and Haggar - Voltron: DOTU and Voltron: The Third Dimension) and Garry Chalk (Sky Marshall Wade and Manset - Voltron Force)! RetroCon takes place in the fall in Oaks, PA, at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center every year, thanks to the organizers and founders, Rose and Tony Tuski (far left, kneeling, above picture), and a slew of volunteers. Thanks to Rose and Tony, who invited special guests, BJ Ward and Garry Chalk, we now have a couple interviews with voice actors from 3 previous Voltron series, prior to Voltron Legendary Defender, which makes this whole podcast a Retro Voltron segment! BJ Ward, who has a 40-year career in voice acting, opera singing, and children's book writing (Farty Marty), is best known for her roles as Scarlet from G.I. Joe, Allura and Haggar from Voltron: Defender of the Universe, and Velma from Scooby-Doo, among hundreds more. Garry Chalk, who has just as long a career as BJ, in both live-action and animated series and movies, is best known as Optimus Prime and Optimus Primal in Transformers: Cybertron and Transformers: Beast Wars, and also as Insp. Andrew Pawlachuk in Cold Squad, and Man at Arms in Masters of the Universe (He-Man), but we remember his roles as Sky Marshall Wade and Manset from Voltron Force the best. We are very honored to have been able to have spent some time with both BJ Ward and Garry Chalk to talk about their amazing careers, and to hang out with other Voltron fans while we enjoyed RetroCon weekend in Oaks, PA. Pixel Dan, another guest of Rose and Tony, has reviewed lots of Voltron toys on his YouTube Channel. We were happy to meet him at RetroCon! On Saturday, we had a blast hanging out with Mel (@melmeiko), who we met for the first time, even though she's been on the podcast a few times. And, on Sunday, we hung out with Windy C. (@windsweptzariel), another fan we've known from social media and the podcast, but had never physically met before. We also met Nicole Schatten for the first time, whom we've known as a big Voltron fan from Facebook. There were also lots of Voltron merchandise for sale by vendors at RetroCon, and Marc picked up a Trendmasters Cyber Sentinel Voltron for $5, and a Trendmasters Allura figure from Voltron: The Third Dimension, which he had signed by BJ Ward. Greg picked up the Holy Grail of 2 scripts signed by the cast of the original Voltron series, personally donated by Neil Ross (Keith/Pidge) for charity. He also had BJ Ward's book, Farty Marty, signed by the author herself! Overall, RetroCon was a ton of fun! We didn't win any of the raffle prizes that were given away both days, but there were some cool Voltron prizes available! The winner of the adult costume contest at RetroCon was Quicksilver, the leader of the Silverhawks from the cartoon of the same name. Here he is, pictured, below: We also want to share with you Josh Keaton's VLOG from NYCC. We got a little choked up watching it, because it has meant so much to us that Josh Keaton is our Shiro and our Space Dad, and he is going to miss recording Shiro and going out to promote the show as much as we've enjoyed watching the show and meeting him at the cons. Thank you so much for sharing this with us, Josh! Here is that link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C74YwlXrWL4 "Dungeons and Voltron" is making its final quest at the Let's Voltron store! In 10 days, this awesome mashup design is retiring, and will no longer be available in our store. So, this is your last chance to get this amazing design by K-Lionheart, and at an awesome price - only $15! https://www.teepublic.com/campaign/248-dungeons-and-voltron-retiring-campaign/t-shirt?ref_id=5313 As Always, Thank you for Listening! Take a look at the poster: Yesterday, it was announced that LEGO Ideas Voltron 21311 Set will be available to buy on August 1, 2018! We had LEGO Ideas Designer Lendy Tayag on our podcast to talk all about when his design hit 10,000 supporters (http://www.letsvoltron.com/58) and when his design had been approved to have the set go into production (http://www.letsvoltron.com/107) Here is a quote from LEGO Designer Niek Duco van Slagmaat, who's task it was to turn Lendy's design into an actual product that can be assembled using instructions provided in the set. Here's his quote: "Let’s go Voltron Force! I cannot put into words how much this model means to me. When it hit 10k votes, I started working on models to try and prove that we could do something like this. Now, almost 2 years later, it’s really happening! I have Samuel Johnson to thank for fighting to allow me to work on this project and Lendy for getting it to 10k with his awesome model. From the very beginning, the consensus was that we could not make this as a LEGO product, so it was my job to prove people wrong. To kick reason to the curb and do the impossible! By not giving up and continuing to smash our heads into the wall, we made it possible. Crucial points in a mech this size are the joints. Most of the development time on this product was relentlessly churning out shoulder and elbow joints just to have them be rejected for any number of reasons by our rigorous quality department. I went through at least 30 different shoulder builds and about 20 full iterations of Voltron in designing this model. As a fan-builder myself, I was eager to get some good recolors into this set for people that like to build their own stuff, like the ingot and a whole host of drum lacquered pieces! This set also features a number of decorations, my favorite being the 2x2 grey tile with mechanical detail. This was designed to be a perfect fit, but also a good element to be used in your own creations as a finishing touch. Graphic designer Mark Tranter did a fantastic job. I really hope you will enjoy building this model, I poured my heart and soul into making this a reality!" Here are the details about this wonderful new LEGO Ideas 21311 Voltron Set: Features 5 buildable and posable lions that can be transformed and combined to create the giant Voltron super robot. Play with the lions individually or combine them using extra-strong joints to form Voltron—the black lion forms the head and torso; the red and green lions form the arms; and the yellow and blue lions form the legs. Pose the head, shoulders, arms and wrists of Voltron (legs are not posable). Also includes a sword and shield (each with silver-colored elements) that attach firmly to Voltron’s hands. Includes a booklet with building instructions, plus information about the set’s fan creator and super force of LEGO® designers. This set includes over 2,321 pieces. Display or play out exciting stories from the original 1980s animated Voltron TV series and the modern DreamWorks Voltron: Legendary Defender series. Voltron measures over 15” (40cm) high, 5” (14cm) long and 8” (21cm) wide. Black lion measures over 6” (17cm) high, 8” (22cm) long and 5” (15cm) wide. Yellow and blue lions each measure over 3” (8cm) high, 8” (21cm) long and 3” (8cm) wide. Green and red lions each measure over 3” (8cm) high, 7” (18cm) long and 1” (5cm) wide. Voltron’s sword measures 11” (29cm) long. Voltron’s shield measures 6” (16cm) in diameter. LEGO Voltron will be available from shop.LEGO.com/Voltron and LEGO stores around the world from the 1st of August, 2018 for a recommended retail price of USD/EURO* 179.99 / GBP 159.99. If you're itching to get your copy of 21311 Voltron as soon as possible then we can reveal that this set will be available early for LEGO VIP members on the 23rd July, 2018! Remember it's free to become a LEGO VIP member! Marc talked with Traci Todd, Sr Editor at Viz Media, and Josh Bernard from Collection DX. And, from a pre-recorded Book Signing and Presentation at Barnes & Noble Tribeca in New York City, Marc was also on stage with Brian Smith and Jacob Chabot. So, all 5 Lions are represented here on Let's Voltron! Traci Todd was Black Lion, who formed a great book out of all the submissions of the writers and artists that contributed. Brian Smith was Red Lion, the right arm that detailed the fictional side of the Voltron Universe, in all of the series that were shown on TV. Marc Morrell was Green Lion, who told the story of how Voltron was developed as a children's cartoon TV series in America in 1984, and the chronology of everything Voltron over the last 30 years. Josh Bernard was Blue Lion, who told the story of the Voltron Toys and Collectibles that have been created in Voltron's image over the 30-year span. Jacob Chabot was Yellow Lion, who created the artwork for the Comic Book Epilogue at the end of the book, which shows the storyline that would have been Season 2 of Voltron Force. Sam Elzway (Designer) could have been our Sven, as his designs made the book look great, from the cover to every page in between. Although he was not on the podcast with us, his contributions will never go unnoticed. This episode gets into the background of how the project came together, and how these 5 Voltron Fans came together to provide the rest of the Voltron Fans with the largest Voltron compendium ever made. If you are one of the few who still have not picked up a copy of the book, or you want to buy the book as a Christmas Gift for a lucky Voltron fan, you can get the book at the Voltron Store, Amazon, or Barnes & Noble. In this episode, the Voltron Fangirls take over, as Marc has a Voltron Roundtable Discussion with 4 Female Voltron Superfans. In addition, Marc announces several podcast events and Voltron.com offerings. The first event is a T-Shirt Campaign for the Let’s Voltron Podcast. You can go to http://teespring.com/letsvoltron to purchase Let’s Voltron Podcast Logo t-shirts in 3 varieties: Canvas Ringspun (Unisex Gray), Canvas Triblend (Unisex Tan), and Womens Junior (Gray). The way this works is like a Kickstarter campaign. Our goal is to sell 50 t-shirts or more in a 3-week period. The campaign ends on July 18th, whether we reach our goal or not. If we reach our goal, t-shirts will be shipped to arrive anywhere from 7-13 days after July 18. If we don’t reach our goal, then no one will get a t-shirt at all. There are shipping costs associated with these, but it is to your advantage to order as many as you can in the same reservation to save on the cost of shipping. So, gather your friends and family together that live near you, get their size and style information, and put it all in one order, and you will save a boatload on shipping for the additional shirts. We also need your help to spread the word to make sure we reach the goal and everyone gets their shirts. Tell everyone you know by word of mouth, share on Facebook, Twitter, email, forums and fan groups, and use the URL, http://teespring.com/letsvoltron in every correspondence. Thanks! Another podcast announcement is that Let’s Voltron: The Official Voltron Podcast will have a vendor booth at RetroCon on Sept 27-28, 2014, in Oaks, PA, at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center. We will be sharing a booth with Bad Wolf Radio, under The OrangeFM Podcast Network. Voltron and Doctor Who will be represented at RetroCon, where we will give out Cards and Stickers, and sell T-Shirts and Hats, while we each record podcasts directly from the fans at RetroCon. You can pre-order tickets for both days for ONLY $22 for RetroCon at http://retrocons.com/purchase-retro-con-tickets/ Coloring Pages are available to print for Voltron Force on Voltron.com! Bob Koplar talked about them, at the request of our Australian fans, on our Episode 13 Podcast. You can download or print them from http://wep.com/cpages/index.html and while you are on Voltron.com, for this weekend only, you can get Free Shipping on all orders, using the discount code, FREESHIP, during the second step of the checkout process. The Original Voltron: Defender of the Universe TV Episodes are reviewed once more in this episode of Let’s Voltron: The Official Voltron Podcast. In this episode, Marc and Mike finish reviewing V:DotU, Episode 4: The Missing Key, where Voltron forms for the 1st time. Then, we continue reviewing episodes up to and including Episode 8: The Stolen Lion. Before Marc and Mike talk about the episodes, Mike lets us know that the first wave of Toynami 30th Anniversary Voltron Pre-Orders have shipped, and Marc gives an account of receiving it and opening it with his son, Lucas. This really is a great Collectors Set to own, and whether you preserve it as a collectible or take it out of the box and play with it (which we recommend!), you will marvel at the quality of the craftsmanship that George Sohn and everyone at Toynami have put into this 30th Anniversary Die-Cast Voltron. If you still haven’t ordered one yet, here is a link to it at the Voltron Store. Mike also reports that Issue #3 of the Robotech/Voltron Crossover Comic Series has been released, and WEP is offering a 3-issue bundle. If you recall, Marc and Mike stopped reviewing Episode 4: The Missing Key in Podcast Episode #6 (We’re Space Explorers) just before the Voltron Force formed Voltron for the 1st time. So, this podcast episode covers the following episodes (Beast King GoLion episode titles in parenthesis): 4 -- The Missing Key (Resurrection of the Legendary Giant) 5 -- The Princess Joins Up (Fortress for the New Struggle) 6 -- The Right Arm of Voltron (Death of Shirogane the Hero) 7 -- The Lion Has New Claws (The Beautiful Princess' Battle) 8 -- The Stolen Lion (Stolen Blue Lion) Listen as we discuss the precarious situation of the Voltron Force’s struggle to defend Arus with Voltron, only to lose one of their own, and have the Princess step up to join the team. This story arc has many key elements that carry the series forward and establishes precedents for future episodes. Marc closes out the episode with a special announcement for next week’s episode of the podcast: Franklin Cofod, the Director, Producer, and Showrunner for the Original Voltron Series run from 1984-1986, will be our special guest for an extended interview that will cover a wealth of Voltron information that you will hear NOWHERE else. This will cover the next 2 episodes of the podcast. So, what have you always wanted to know about the original series that is still unknown? What questions do you have for Franklin Cofod? You have until Monday, May 12, at 6 PM EDT to get your questions in. Respond in the comments on this notes page, or call 860-4MULLET and leave a voicemail question, or send us an email at letsvoltronpodcast@gmail.com. Never underestimate the power of Voltron Fans! That’s what we learned this week when a Twitter conversation started a string of events that led us to our special guest this week: Voltron DDP Comics Author Dan Jolley. As you will find out from listening to this podcast episode, Dan Jolley is overwhelmed by the fan support for his version of the Voltron story. Since he was the first one to create true character backstories and bios for many of the characters we were introduced to by the original TV series, he was given free reign by WEP to make this universe his own. Dan’s intuition served him well as the major plot points came together, and we saw these characters mature before our eyes with every issue of the DDP Comics from 2003-2004. As this episode begins, Marc makes the colorful connection between Voltron and the Olympics, and Mike remarks that both Lion Force Voltron and Vehicle Voltron could be our team to cheer for in the best Olympics ever. Then, we welcome Dan Jolley to the podcast and we go back in time to 2003, when Dan first started working with Image Comics/Devils Due Publishing on the Voltron: Defender of the Universe Comics. This enlightening conversation hits many aspects of the Voltron story, from the origin of Voltron to why the space mice won’t be wearing any tutus. You may even hear what Dan would write about if he was able to continue writing some more Voltron comics. He is certainly open to the idea, and would love to work with World Events Productions. For those of you that submitted questions, listen carefully, as Dan answers your questions, and chooses one of you to receive a signed copy of one of the original Dan Jolley DDP Voltron Comics Issues in Mint Condition! Dan also tells us about two current projects he is working on with Dark Horse Comics: Bloodhound: Crowbar Medicine Terminator: Enemy of My Enemy It was a real blast having Dan on the Let’s Voltron Podcast, and we have all of you to thank for it! Give us more suggestions for people you would like to hear us interview on the podcast in the comments below. Let’s Voltron! Follow Dan Jolley on Twitter and on his website, The Jolleyverse. Marc and Mike spent the rest of the episode talking about the History of Voltron Toys, in chronological order, starting in the early 80's, when the first Beast King GoLion and Dairugger toys were available from Popy in Japan. One of the toys we mentioned was the LJN Giant Voltron Commander Radio Controlled Robot. We talked about a commercial that promoted that toy, and here is a link to that 30-second blast from the past. If you follow the links from that one, you'll see there is a whole page of old Voltron commercials available to view. I'd say commercials have come a long way since then. We didn't mention it in the Podcast, but it has just been announced that the 30th Anniversary Voltron Collector's Set from Toynami will be available on April 30. That news broke here. PETER! You didn’t tell them about…the RUMBLE PAK, DID YOU? Sadly, we were unable to secure VHS tapes to record for RSS subscribers, but we do have another massive-length episode of Nintendo Free Radio for you featuring Stephen; Austen; and Donald (what do you MEAN there used to be another guy?) rambling about their latest misadventures in the world of video gaming. This time, Austen kicks off New Business bear-ly scratching the surface of Atlus/Arc System Work’s new fighting game: Persona 4 Arena, a home console game that un-bear-ably displays controller commands with Fight Stick inputs for some thread-bear reason.  Afterwards, it’s time to party like it’s 1985 with the PSN’s latest rhythm game, Retro/Grade, ending (appropriately enough) with initial impressions of the Wii’s swan song, Mistwalker’s The Last Story.  Have the creators of Final Fantasy finally created a JRPG without a terrible opening Act, or have they lost that odyssey? Donald then steps up on stage to discuss pacing and Classic Controller Pro issues with Sega/NIS America’s Wii Tactical Strategy Dating Sim Sakura Wars: So Long My Love; his experience on the Terrain of Testament playing (we think?) the PlayStation 2’s Fire Pro Wrestling Returns; and his battle against Spiral Power in the PlayStation Portable Mini Sasume Tactics! Switching things up, Stephen renders his verdict on the WayForward 3DS (and soon to be Wii U) puzzle platformer Mighty Switch Force.  Does the game do justice to Nintendo’s latest handheld, or should the developers have been booked for negligence?  Wrapping things up, Stephen then recounts how the pacing and analog stick controls aren’t such a snap in the Virtual Console’s Nintendo 64 Pokemon game, as well as the historical turn-based strategy game Civilization V on the PC. Following New Business, we activate the interlocks and connect the Dyna-therms for another installment of What Are We Watching (cheesy 80s theme song optional).  Everything old is new again as Austen discusses his newest anime Blu Ray acquisitions in the wonderful The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and the bizarre (but well-constructed) first season of Shakugan no Shana. Meanwhile, Donald describes the culinary misadventures of Gordon Ramsay in MasterChef and Hotel Hell.  Finally, Ceric delivers a techno-babble double-whammy in Star Trek: Voyager and the Voltron: Defender of the Universe sequel series with an-already legendarily terrible opening theme: Voltron Force. Afterwards in the Feature Discussion, with the final issue of Nintendo Power on the horizon the 3 of us sit around the camp fire and ramble for nearly an hour about our memories of the beloved magazine; our thoughts on the publication’s closure; and the future of Nintendo’s marketing in the Internet age.  We then once again conclude the show with our “1Ups” and “Poison Mushrooms”, including such topics as the 2013 World Pokemon Championships in Vancouver; the surprisingly-strong year of downloadable titles (little did we know La-Mulana would get announced for North American WiiWare shortly thereafter); the industry’s frustrating practice of creating underwhelming countdown web sites; and…adventures in house cleaning and storage bins? We’d love to hear your thoughts on this and past episodes, so feel free to drop us a comment in the Talkback thread or on our website.  Be sure to send in your Listener Mail as well, and (time permitting) we’ll read and discuss it on an upcoming show!  You’re also welcome to talk with us and other fine (and often eccentric) folks over at the Nintendo World Report Forums!  Finally, now that we’re finally on iTunes, please don’t forget to rate us there.  We’ll see you in a few weeks, but until then we hope you enjoy the show! On this episode of MTR I had the pleasure of interviewing Jeremy Corray who is the Creative Director for the upcoming Voltron Force animated series debuting next week on Nicktoons. My desire to do this interview stemmed from my inner Voltron fan boy but also from the desire to learn more about the creative process that went into bringing this childhood icon of to life for a new generation. Jeremy was a pleasure to interview and provided so much insight on the series that my excitement for its debut was magnified ten fold. In speaking with Jeremy we were privy to some of the inner workings of the shows creative process and the rationale that was applied to certain character depictions. Overall I know many fans enjoyed knowing that their childhood icon was going to be done justice. MTR would like to thank Jeremy for giving us wonderful opportunity to share this with our audience. Make sure to stop by the official Voltron website and Facebook fan page. You can also follow Jeremy on twitter via @Voltron.
