Nick Hounsfield was introduced to surfing by his father Brian in the mid 1970s on his regular visits to Cornwall in the United Kingdom. He has been an avid surfer ever since.Nick became an Osteopath by trade and founded a successful family business with this wife.But as time wore on and when Nick's father passed away in the late 2000's, he started to think about the world a little differently. He began to think about open spaces in nature and the healing aspects of engaging and being in nature. He started to realize that a lot of people's poor health was due to a number of things such as not exercising, not eating well, lack of connection to others, lack of nature connectedness  and so on…He set about trying to pull these different factors together and look at how he could solve some of these issues through one holistic vision. By chance this was around the same time that Wavegarden released a video of their first technology which would bring waves inland, for the first time.Nick had a eureka moment. And this was the start of his mythological quest to bring his concept of The Wave to the United Kingdom. It's been a long journey for Nick, which involves every obstacle you can think of on his way to realizing his vision. Fundraising, permits, Global Pandemic, shaky economy, Brexit, and a stroke. But, Nick persevered and has succeeded in realizing his vision and pioneered a new business model while minimizing its environmental impact and offering an exceptional surf experience with a safe, inclusive space for all surfers. He was a Skateboarder and spent his summers at Kennolyn Camp in Soquel Mountains of Santa Cruz. Sundays were spent on the beach, where Kelly found his love of Surfing. One summer he found himself at Portola Surf Shop owned and operated by Mike Locatelli. Fast forward a couple of years he partnered with Locatelli and opened On The Beach Surf Shop. Since 1986 Kelly Sorensen has been providing the best selection of products and excellent customer service. Like most independently owned small businesses, they have not only provided jobs to the local community but also contributed to charities, sponsorships and other philanthropic organizations. Al enkele jaren zijn Joeri Fredriks en Jeroen Den Otter bezig met de bouw van de eerste indoor wavepool in Europa.  In een loods in Den Haag leggen ze de laatste hand aan de Surfpoel. Een indoor wavepool van 70 op 20 meter,  dat 120 golven per uur maakt van 1,5 m, met rides tot 11 seconden. Het project zit nu in een stroomversnelling en heel binnenkort rollen daar de eerste perfecte golven. Nick Uricchio is the Co-Founder of Semente Surfboards.  Nick grew up in Connecticut and moved out to California when he was 10. At 15 in high school he started surfing with friends at Huntington Beach. After finishing school in 78 Nick took off backpacking around Europe. The last stop of the trip he found himself in Lisbon, Portugal. His rail pass had ran out and the uncrowded waves lured him to stay in Carcavelos for a few months.In 1980 Nick moved to Costa da Caparica close to Lisbon with António Pereira Caldas they started Lipsticks Surfboards one of the first surfboard manufacturers in Portugal. 2 years later he partnered with his good friend Miguel Katzenstein to create Semente Surfboards. The plan was all about lifestyle and surfing the best waves in the country. So they set up shop in the surf mecca of Ericeira. The rest is history. Nick went on to become one of the most successful shapers in Portugal. Giovanni Piro è la versione surf delle persone che al TG chiamano “cervelli in fuga”. A 29 anni è Surf Operation Coordinator di Alaia Bay. Dalla Sardegna a Bristol, nella sua prima esperienza in una wave pool Giovanni si è fatto trovare pronto e forte di una formazione tra ingegneria, sport management e turismo. Come ogni buon manager riesce ad astrarsi dal coinvolgimento emotivo della passione, per cui ci spiega lucidamente che il surf è l'ottimo pretesto per la posa della prima pietra di questa macchina da soldi, ma dietro ad un progetto come Alaia Bay si nasconde ben altro. Dopo un tour virtuale della "sala di comando", attratti da schermi che generano onde al tocco e pulsanti rossi da premere solo in caso di emergenza, rimane spazio anche per qualche sketch autoironico sugli italiani all'estero, una favola in continuo aggiornamento.

Surfbiz è lo show dedicato agli addetti ai lavori dell'industria del surf, che ci aiuteranno a disegnare una mappa dei lavori del surf per capire lo stato dell'arte attuale e conoscere le prossime mosse verso una maggior professionalizzazione del settore. Adam Bonvin è il fondatore e direttore di Alaia Bay, partito da un crowdfunding e passando per uno skatepark ha dato forma alla prima wave pool dell'Europa Centrale. Faceva l'ingegnere del suono a Londra, ha alle spalle una ricca famiglia che attraverso il Gruppo Investis gestisce proprietà per 1.3 miliardi di euro. Facile così, no? Occhio però a sottovalutare il capitano Adam, un leader di cui tutti dentro Alaia (anche i molti italiani impiegati lì) parlano strabene. Il racconto della genesi di Alaia Bay e di come si manda avanti un'infrastruttura del genere.

Che il WSL faccia tappa in un'onda artificiale non è più una novità, siamo ormai alla terza edizione del Surf Ranch Pro. Tutt'altro discorso invece è capire come i top del mondo si preparino ad affrontare una gara che somiglia più ad una run di slopestyle nello snowboard che ad una heat nell'imprevedibilità dell'oceano. Sanno come fare Medina e Toledo, che da quando esiste il contest nato col nome di Freshwater Pro hanno sempre monopolizzato la finale. Bene anche Leo, che ci spiega la fatica di completare un'onda così fisicamente probante. Finale di puntata per Tokyo, perché Leonardo è in odore di ripescaggio: con Jordy Smith sotto i ferri possiamo iniziare a sperare veramente che il tricolore sarà rappresentato nell'esordio olimpico del surf.

Da ragazzini Filippo Eschiti e Giovanni Evangelisti giocavano a calcio. Sono cresciuti con le ginocchia sbucciate correndo per dei campi di pozzolana, non saltando da un aereo all'altro al seguito di un surf coach di nome Etienne, Jake o Joao. Pippo e Giò sono la classe operaia che va in paradiso con un surf costruito sulle ali della passione. Non sono dei pro e non c'hanno nemmeno mai pensato. L'unica cosa che contava, allora come adesso, era portare a casa una session nelle pause dalla vita reale. E pazienza se poi a lavoro ci vai stanco e salato, con la pelle che tira e gli occhi pesanti. Come dice sempre un mio caro amico, “dammi un'altra sveglia alle 5 e vedrai che in ufficio ci vado col sorriso”. A voi i maggiori esponenti del surf operaio nazionale.

La prima volta che ho intervistato Leo era il 2013. Io 20enne, lì per conto della Gazzetta dello Sport, e Leo che non aveva ancora compiuto 16 anni. Due pischelli. Siamo cresciuti, eccome, da quel giorno al Polo Natatorio di Ostia e con noi è cresciuto, tantissimo, il surf italiano. Mai però come in questa occasione avevo avuto la sensazione parlando con Leo davanti ad un microfono che il ragazzo si fosse fatto uomo. Leonardo Fioravanti è pronto ad assolvere il ruolo di guida del surf azzurro, presente e vicino alle nuove generazioni per cui, ha fatto capire durante questa chiacchierata, vuole un occhio di riguardo . Tra retroscena dalla surfing industry, aneddoti sui top34 del World Tour, passioni e nuove abitudini, Leo ci racconta da Sydney dei progetti (piccolo spoiler: la costruzione di una wavepool nei dintorni di Roma) che ha in serbo per stimolare la crescita del nostro movimento. We look back at the Carve Pro held at Maroubra Beach over the weekend and Craig shares his story of how HE discovered Kelly Slater's wave pool.

In 1814 it was the British who were "runnin down the mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico." Today, ships of almost every nationality are steaming down the river to the Gulf. 54 of them belong to International Shipholding. Their fleet of cargo vessels ply international trade from their current headquarters in Mobile, Alabama but they re set to return soon to their original home in New Orleans. International Shipholding is a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange and its CFO and Vice President is Manny Estrada. Manny joins Peter on this edition of Out to Lunch. Randy Bullard also spends a lot of his time on the river, but also in it and under it. Randy is the President of River Services Company. The company has offices in Harahan, Mississippi, Tennessee and Kentucky and a fleet of 10 ships that provide river services like underwater construction, welding, and salvage.
