Robert Peterpaul, host of the "The Art of Kindness" podcast, shares his inspiring story of resilience and the power of kindness.“I remember the moment that really started to shift things was waking up that morning to go to school. When my brother said, my stomach hurts, I don't feel well, I don't feel well. I immediately thought he was faking it. I thought he was just trying to get out of class because, listen, I've hid in the basement, I've hid in closets, I've hid under the tables to not go to school. That was us. And then he kept up with it. And I still was kind of like, huh. I think my parents, too, at first maybe thought that. And then... they finally relented and said, okay, we'll take you to the doctor. And he was just in so much pain. And so I went off to school, kind of probably forgot about it. I was like, maybe jealous he was staying home, to be honest. And then when I came out of school, my parents weren't there to pick me up.”When Robert was 10 years old, his brother passed away from cancer. He emphasizes the need to be there for others and lead with kindness, understanding that everyone is going through their own struggles. His personal experience with loss and grief has taught him the power of authenticity and vulnerability and the importance of finding joy and positivity in the face of tragedy.Robert is an award-winning actor, writer, and celebrity interviewer with a passion for storytelling and spreading kindness. Some recent highlights include CBS' BULL, Netflix's KING COBRA, SONY's WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT, and NEWSIES at the Westport Country Playhouse. He will next appear in the upcoming Amazon feature film SITTING IN BARS WITH CAKE.Robert and his family formed the nonprofit THE THOMAS PETERPAUL FOUNDATION in honor of his late brother. TPF has helped pediatric cancer patients and their families since its inception. Robert notably teamed up with Novartis and spoke before Congress at the US Capitol on behalf of TPF to get the CAR T Cell Therapy approved. He also works for the nonprofit WOMEN IN ENTERTAINMENT, which assists women both working in and aspiring to work in the entertainment industry."The Art of Kindness with Robert Peterpaul” celebrates artists who use their platform to make the world a happier place - giving kindness tips, self-care advice, & funny stories from the brightest stars in the business.More: robertpeterpaul.comIG: https://www.instagram.com/robpeterpaulTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@robertpeterpaulThe Art of Kindness Podcast: Bpn.fm/TheArtOfKindnessGet access to ad-free episodes early + bonus episodes with past guests https://patreon.com/thelifeshiftpodcastConnect with me:Instagram: www.instagram.com/thelifeshiftpodcastYouTube: https://bit.ly/thelifeshift_youtubeTwitter: www.twitter.com/thelifeshiftpodWebsite: www.thelifeshiftpodcast.com Hosted on Acast. This week's Nose is more just like a regular, chill-archy. The Bear is a new half-hour foodie dramedy series from FX and Hulu. Here's some of FX's synopsis: “The Bear follows Carmen ‘Carmy' Berzatto, a young chef from the fine dining world, who comes home to Chicago to run his family sandwich shop — The Original Beef of Chicagoland — after a heartbreaking death in his family. A world away from what he's used to, Carmy must balance the soul-crushing realities of small business ownership, his strong-willed and recalcitrant kitchen staff and his strained familial relationships, all while grappling with the impact of his brother's suicide. As Carmy fights to transform both The Original Beef of Chicagoland and himself, he works alongside a rough-around-the-edges kitchen crew that ultimately reveal themselves as his chosen family.” And: Kim's Convenience is a half-hour sitcom that aired on the CBC for five seasons, from 2016 until last year. It depicts a Korean-Canadian family, the Kims, who run a convenience store in the Moss Park neighborhood of Toronto. Michael Barker joined Westport Country Playhouse in September 2016 from Mill Valley, CA, where he was the managing director of Marin Theatre Company. Jeremy is ballsy. A risk-taker. The type of guy who won't take no for an answer (unless you mean it in which case he'll totally respect your boundaries). After growing up in Nashville, TN, studying finance at the University of Georgia and working in marketing in Dallas, Jeremy realized there is more to life than helping State Farm sell insurance, so he quit his corporate job (like a boss) and moved to New York to become a comedian. Through countless hours of grueling labor and an endless supply of Tony Robbins DVDs, he made himself a regular at clubs all over the city and sells-out venues across the country from Zanies in Nashville to Second City in Chicago. He's a writer for Funny or Die, a 6-time roast battle champion, and he currently runs the city's best monthly charity based comedy show, "Stand Up and Save the World" at the New York Comedy Club. So yeah, he's basically a hero. Audio Player

Steve Katz has possibly the most eclectic background and resume of anyone I’ve ever spoken to. His early influences in the 1960s, like Ray Harryhausen and Famous Monsters magazine, mixed with watching rehearsals at the nearby Westport Country Playhouse with visiting directors like Woody Allen to the influence and support of his parents to propel him into an artistic life from the very beginning. That led him to, among other things: learning film cameras via a cousin in New York who worked on TV shows like “Car 54, Where Are You?”; putting together psychedelic light shows in NYC at places like the Fillmore East and working with bands like The Grateful Dead, The Doors, The Byrds, and Sly & The Family Stone starting at age 19; playing bluegrass banjo; working on John McTiernan’s first film; befriending “Saturday Night Live” writing legend Michael O’Donoghue and seeing a legendary short film he directed, “The Clams”, go on to open a season of “SNL” and catch a big break as a TV writer; he continued to work and grow and eventually established himself as a writer-director-producer in Hollywood; created the first digital previz on the feature Clear and Present Danger; and eventually, all his experience brought him to - yes - China, where he has been involved in many projects big and small. But of all the references I just name-checked, the one that originally cemented Steve’s name in my mind back in the day was that he wrote a truly legendary cinema book called Film Directing: Shot by Shot, published by the then-upstart Michael Weise Productions. It was released in 1992, which is when I was in film school, and it instantly became required reading in my Film Production courses! It’s familiar blue cover was updated a few years ago to announce the new, 25th anniversary edition, which was freshly and thoroughly revised for the digital age. It’s easily the film book I have gifted to more people than any other, and it was a real treat to get to hear some of Steve’s stories in-depth. Among the crazy but true tales already mentioned, we scratch the surface on Steve’s several engagements as Michael Jackson’s personal filmmaking tutor - a story he has NEVER told before! Steve was resident at the Neverland Ranch for months at a time, was flown into luxury hotels to work with the star, sometimes just watching movies late at night. He also saw things in his time around MJ that will likely merit another show entirely, but we will have much more on that topic another day. We even overlap on his interest in the intersection between art and neuroscience, among many other wonky and highly specific topics. To top it off, he’s also a good friend of one of my best friends, Kevin Geiger, so the “small world” meter is off the charts with this one for me. More on all that later. For now, though, you can visit the blog post at https://www.crazyinagoodway.com/knew-resources for links, contact information, and I hope you enjoy this epic conversation with Steven Katz!

The Producer's Perspective Podcast with Ken Davenport

Tara Rubin is a casting director with her own casting company since 2001. Before that, she was a casting director at Johnson-Liff Associates. During those years she worked on productions of Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Sunset Boulevard, Jerry Zaks' revival of Guys and Dolls and Miss Saigon. At Tara Rubin Casting, she and her colleagues cast the musicals School of Rock, Mamma Mia!, Jersey Boys, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Aladdin, Mary Poppins, Spamalot, The Producers, Young Frankenstein for Broadway as well as The Country Girl, The Heiress, The Farnsworth Invention and A Time To Kill. They have worked with many regional theaters including La Jolla Playhouse, The Williamstown Theater Festival, Dallas Theater Center, Arena Stage, and The Westport Country Playhouse. She serves on the board of the Casting Society of America. It takes quite a diplomat, and there aren’t many better than our guest this week, Tara Rubin of Tara Rubin Casting. Just in the past few months Tara has been casting Cats, Miss Saigon, Dear Evan Hansen, and all those kids in School of Rock. Talk about a diverse bunch of actors . . . and creative teams! That’s why I cast Tara in this week’s podcast. So listen in and hear Tara talk about . . . The most important thing she learned when she worked for a Producer. How casting has changed in the past 20 years, and how that helps newcomers. Whether agents have more or less power now than they did before. The biggest mistake Actors make when walking into the room (and the mistake they make when marketing themselves). How are we doing on diversity . . . and what else we should be doing. He also shares how a casual college audition launched him into acting; discusses his artistic homes at both Williamstown Theatre Festival and the Westport Country Playhouse; marvels at the good fortune of his early connection to composer Cy Coleman, first with "I Love My Wife" and later on "City of Angels"; recalls the excitement of being on stage with Elaine May as she improvised her way through Edward Albee's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"; relates a funny incident involving President Clinton and the chorus girls of "Chicago"; and confides why his next Broadway musical role should turn up very soon.
