POPULARITY
Welcome to your weekly UAS News Update. We have three stories for you this week. First, DJI takes the Department of Defense to court over its "Chinese Military Company" label. Second, the popular DJI Mini 4 Pro gets a huge update enabling third-party app support. And third, drones play a crucial role in rescuing two lost teenagers in Colorado. First up this week, DJI is pushing back legally against the U.S. Department of Defense. On March 14th, DJI filed a motion in federal court challenging the DoD's designation of the company as a “Chinese Military Company,” or CMC. This label comes under Section 1260H of the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act, which targets companies supposedly linked to China's military. DJI argues this designation, first applied in October 2022 and reaffirmed this past January that it is arbitrary, lacks substantial evidence, and harms its business significantly. The company points to terminated contracts and state-level restrictions in places like Florida and Arkansas that limit or ban the use of their drones by public agencies. DJI is asking the court to declare the DoD's actions unlawful and remove them from the CMC list. They claim the DoD ignored a detailed delisting petition submitted last July and failed to provide public justification for the listing as required by recent amendments. DJI contests the DoD's claims about state ownership, stating that its founder and early investors hold the vast majority of stock and voting rights, with state-owned entities having minimal shares. They also dispute the idea that having a National Enterprise Technology Center status links them to the military, noting companies like Volkswagen also hold this civilian-focused status. Next up, there's some exciting news for DJI Mini 4 Pro owners. DJI has released a major update to its Mobile SDK, that's the Software Development Kit, specifically version 5. This update now includes support for the Mini 4 Pro, which is a pretty big deal. What this means is that third-party developers can now create apps that work directly with your Mini 4 Pro. We're talking about popular apps like Litchi, DroneDeploy, and Drone Harmony potentially offering features like advanced flight automation, custom waypoint missions, and better mapping capabilities. This really unlocks some pro-level functionality for a drone that weighs under 250 grams. Now, there's one important catch you need to know. To use these third-party apps via the MSDK, you *must* be using the DJI RC-N2 controller – that's the one that uses your smartphone as the screen. Unfortunately, the DJI RC 2 controller, the one with the built-in screen, doesn't have MSDK support enabled for the Mini 4 Pro at this time. DJI hasn't said if or when that might change. This update also added MSDK support for the professional Matrice 4D cinematography drone and the Matrice 4TD industrial drone. Next up this week, a great story showing drones in action saving lives. Two teenagers got lost while hiking near Carpenter Peak in Colorado's Roxborough State Park last Saturday evening. They did the right thing: they called 911 and stayed put. Douglas County Search and Rescue, along with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, responded around 8:30 p.m. As ground crews started hiking in, the DCSAR drone team lead, Darren Keralla, launched a drone. Despite windy conditions, the drone quickly located the teens, who were flashing a light while sheltering under trees. Using the drone's GPS data (lat/long), rescuers could pinpoint their exact location, streamlining the effort. It's another fantastic example of how drones are becoming invaluable tools for search and rescue operations. https://kdvr.com/news/local/2-lost-teenagers-rescued-with-drone-aid-at-roxborough-state-park/https://dronedj.com/2025/03/21/dji-mini-4-pro-msdk/https://dronexl.co/2025/03/21/dji-court-chinese-military-company-label/

Welcome back to another episode of Your Drone Questions Answered! In today's episode, John and David Young, the founder of Drone Launch Academy, discuss some must-have apps for both recreational and commercial drone pilots. The apps are categorized into flight automation, flight planning, insurance, and editing.Starting with flight automation, David introduces the Litchi app, a versatile tool for programming your drone's flight path and camera movements. Another powerful app is DroneLink, which goes beyond Litchi, offering advanced features like inspections and mapping. Drone Deploy and Pix4D Capture are also mentioned for creating lifelike models and maps.Moving on to flight planning, David recommends the Aloft app for checking airspace rules and regulations. UAV Forecast is highlighted for assessing wind conditions, crucial for safe drone flights. Additionally, David briefly mentions a new app called Drone Assist Flight Planning. When it comes to insurance, Skywatch AI stands out as a reliable option, offering on-demand liability coverage tailored to your specific needs. What's unique is that the app provides a safe driver score, potentially leading to reduced insurance costs based on your piloting skills.Lastly, David touches on video editing apps for those interested in cinematic footage. CapCut is recommended as a popular and user-friendly mobile video editor. University of Idaho researchers are introducing genes from a plant in the nightshade family into potatoes.
Welcome to the nineteenth episode of the What the Austen? podcast! I'm your host Izzy and I am joined by my friend and fellow Janeite Bontle from @colourful_litchi. In this episode, we will discuss Harriet Smith a character who is often overlooked as the unassuming friend who is heavily led by Emma. Myself and Bontle are here to tell you that Harriet deserves her time in the spotlight, celebrating her development throughout the novel. In many ways Emma is not just a growing of age novel about Emma Woodhouse, we will argue Harriet could be seen as a protagonist in her own right. This podcast is about Janeites coming together, discussing Jane Austen's work, and having a few laughs along the way. We really enjoyed making this episode and we hope you like it. This week's livestream from Yifei and Seth covered the top stories from last week and a new segment, DroneDJ Video of the Week. Read a summary of the topics we discussed below. French citizen arrested for drone flights near Iran border Last week an Iranian court sentenced Benjamin Brière to eight years in prison after flying his drone near the Turkmenistan-Iran border. Brière was arrested in May of 2020 and has been on a hunger strike since Christmas to protest his mistreatment. France believes this is a political move due to ongoing negotiations on a new Iran Nuclear Deal. In response, Iran has labeled France as a "hostile nation." There are also concerns coming from Brière's Iranian-based lawyers about how the trial went. This is a very messy situation, especially since Brière is both a foreigner and an Iranian citizen as he holds dual citizenship status. Litchi announced addition to DJI Mini 2, Mini SE, and Air 2S Litchi, a popular autonomous drone flying app, added support to DJI's Mini 2, Mini SE, and Air 2S. This is due to the support being added for these drones into DJI's SDK (a tool used by developers for third-party apps). Here is what you can now do with these drones: Waypoint modePanorama modeTrack modeFollow MeFocus mode Currently, the update is only on Android, but Litchi hopes to bring these additions to its iOS app once those SDK versions are updated. DroneDJ Video of the Week This week's Video of the Week comes from Waimea Bay in Hawaii. With winter swells starting to come in, the surfers are out and enjoying the giant waves. Drone pilots are also out to capture the waves and those that ride them. https://youtu.be/BtOd3as6RBw DJI Inspire 2 to be discountined Notorious DJI leaker OsitaLV shared an image of what seemed to be a notice to stores that the Inspire 2 will stop production. This lines up with reports about a possible Inspire 3 coming later this year. What will come from an Inspire 3? We don't know, but we have stated our request in previous articles and of course, let us know below what you want to see. If you are still an Inspire 2 flyer and don't expect upgrading to the 3 or whatever comes next, make sure to stock up on accessories as those are usually the first bits to go out of stock. https://youtu.be/aUx1cXSJE7A Make sure to subscribe to DroneDJ's YouTube channel to not miss another weekly livestream.

MOJI MADNESS - EP:05 FT. LITCHI by MOJI
Introduction to Andrew: Although Andrew started flying drones 5 years ago, about a year ago, he decided to build a business to make some extra money. Andrew says, “Aerial photography isn’t so big in winter so I didn’t start to get business the summer. But this winter, I’ve lined up clients through spring of next year.” By the way, Andrew is a senior in high school. Andrew bought his first drone for $50 when he was 13. He then got a Parrot Bebop2 which he loved but wasn’t pleased with the pictures. He later bought, and still uses, a Maverick2 Pro.” David agreed “Cheaper drones can get you interested and lead to more. My first drone was a Syma X5C so when someone wants my advice on their first drone, I say, ‘Get a Syma X5Cs on Amazon for $40. They're super light and when you need to land, you just cut the power and it flows to the ground’.” David: “What was it that sparked you to say, ‘I need to make some money doing this’? Did you target realtors when you started? Tell us about your original business plan starting out.” When Andrew could get his Part 107 license at 16, he got a nicer drone for taking pictures and videos. He thought, “Why not get a license, work and bring in some extra money to travel and save for college?” Andrew agreed to take pictures for a golf course in return for them putting it on their social media and tagging him. The job was unpaid, but got him clients and followers—basically, they advertised for him. Last summer, the most impactful thing he did was message a drone company in Chicago to ask for advice about getting clients. They told him to find a local real estate photographer and offer aerial photography to them. So that’s what he did. David: “Are you just doing photography or are you doing video too? Do you charge separately for videos? Do you also edit?” Andrew says he takes as many pictures or videos as he can in 30-45’ to give clients a lot to choose from. If he has to fly from one spot to another, that’s a video. He does some editing but outsources most of it to a company in Vietnam for a very affordable price. For pictures with some videos and no editing he charges $100, slightly more for editing and/or any location farther than 30’ from home. David: “Regarding your approach to the golf course, did you say, ‘I'm going to get my name out there’, and then Googled ‘golf courses in my area’ and contacted them? How did you specifically start to make that happen?” While flying one day, Andrew took pictures of a golf course across the road from his school which he posted to IG and tagged. When they responded that they loved his pictures through Instagram, he requested a contact. He sent them an EM saying, “I'm starting this company, I'm insured and licensed. Can I come to your golf course and take pictures for your social media?” They agreed, so Andrew took and edited pictures and sent them over (They still post his pictures). Since then, Andrew’s process has become simple...he finds contact information online and reaches out. At this point, though, he has a whole portfolio so he’s not offering his services for free. David: “Tell us more about the paying clients that you got from free work. Were they members of the golf course or people from the neighborhood who saw it on social media and reached out?” Andrew got two clients from the first golf course who were from the neighborhood. At first, they followed the golf course on IG. Then, they followed Andrew, reaching out to him later through there. They wanted pictures of the golf course for their home; he charged them $125 for 4x2 & 5x7 pictures. With printing costing $30, he made $95 from each job. David: “So after getting paying clients from the golf course, how did you expand into real estate? Did you try and fail and then reach out to that company in Chicago or is that the first thing you did? Walk us through when you started shifting to real estate.” Andrew replied, “The first real estate job I had was in July before I reached out to that company in Chicago. I brought business cards to my school’s career day, and went up to a broker from a large commercial real estate firm who spoke and said, ‘I just started doing aerial photography for real estate. Here's my card.’ He said thank you—nothing more. In July he reached out to ask me to do a 500-acre farm. I was so excited because I thought they would give me more work if I did good.” The work took four hours and he charged $585: $400 for the time, $185 for editing and a 5-minute video (at that point, he had no idea what to charge so he made it up). Now, Andrew gets one $200-$500 real estate job per month. During busy months, Andrew averages 5-10 jobs a week, which is $2000 to $4,000 a month. During slow months, he often has 2 jobs a week, making $1,200 a month. David: “How much detail do you add to videos...Music? Narration? Overlay text?” He uses Litchi to map out his flight 10 minutes beforehand and then creates automated flight video going around the property for 40 minutes, taking video clips and pictures of the house. For video, he starts off with a title/address and puts it to music. David: “What other ways have you found effective to get clients? I know you also reached out to a real estate photographer. Talk about that a little bit.” Essentially, Andrew Googled “real estate photographer, Frederick, MD,” and found one company to email, saying “I do aerial photography, and I would love to be the person you hire.” When he sent his portfolio, they’d said other people had charged a lot more than him and their work wasn’t as good, so he was hired! Later when Andrew posted/tagged pics of big hotel chains, when they said “This is amazing. We love this”, he said it was a big confidence booster. David: “For your company, did you set up the SkyPix name as an LLC with a bank account or is that just kind of a name you chose to?” Since he’s under 18, the name is a trade name. When 18, he’ll create an LLC. Andrew keeps track of all payments, using Square for invoices and a Google spreadsheet to keep track of everything he spends. David: “Where do you see things headed? Will you stay in real estate, or with golf courses, or try to expand into other things? Will you build a team? What does the future look like for you?” Andrew wants to start a drone pilot network, like drone ERs. He’ll be working with a development team to develop the platform and do his marketing. Drone Mapping Tips - How to Pick the Right Sensor Today's question is about the best sensors for drone mapping. We discuss the best sensors, drones, and mapping software that will allow you to fly high and still build accurate drone maps and models. Our caller, Gary, is a licensed surveyor who recently attended our in-person mapping class. In our previous show, "How Marking Ground Control Points Affects Your Accuracy in Drone Mapping", we had talked about the three main factors that affect GSD or Ground Sampling Distance: camera sensor, altitude, and focal length. In today's show, Gary has come up with a great follow up question about camera sensors. Specifically, which sensor set up will allow you to fly high and still build accurate drone maps and models? To answer Gary's question, we discuss different high-end sensors like the Zenmuse X7 and Sony A7 RMarkIII. We also discuss how enterprise drones like the Matrice210 and Matrice600 compare to the old warhorse, DJI Phantom. Apart from this, we compare different drone mapping software like GSPro, Litchi, and Pix4D to reveal the best option for you. If you are looking to enhance your mapping accuracy, this is a show you do not want to miss. Thanks for the great question, Gary. Fly Safe! Danny Engesser is an IT professional who has been running his drone side hustle for the past year. He started off with a Parrot AR, and has since moved up to the DJI Phantom 3 Advanced and now the Inspire 1. So far he's been working in a variety of industries including energy, car dealerships, and corporate group photos. Utilizing the LAANC system (Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability), Danny has been able to fly missions in a variety of controlled airspace. So far he's found the system to be fairly straightforward, and hasn't had any issue on obtaining airspace permissions. While in the air, Danny prefers to use the DJI Go app, however has been tinkering with Litchi as well lately. I've used litchi myself, but we also discuss my personal preference of Hangar's Autopilot. Danny mentions that he had some trouble with the Inspire 1's firmware, and figured out a way to downgrade it to the original settings. It takes some work, but he has posted instructions for how to make this happen. I haven't had to try something like this, but it looks like a good option for drone pilots that are having issue with their firmware and want to start over from scratch. Alternatively, you can use my method of refreshing the firmware to keep things up to date with a clean install. For insurance, Danny choses Verifly to cover him on a flight by flight basis. So far he's had pricing ranging from $10 up to $130, with the increase likely based on the operational airspace. There may be a few other factors that cause the price to jump, but in his tests he's found that small adjustments have caused significant price changes.
Wine And Gourmet Taipei was one of the most challenging wine shows I’ve ever been invited to in the world. With a tasting selection ranging from Shochu, a Japanese distilled beverage, vodka like, to Australian Shiraz. Typically I would start at a traditional wine tasting with sparkling wine, moving on to light then more full bodied whites like Chardonnay, then the reds from Pinot Noir to Cabs then maybe if I’ve got anything left in me, ports and sherries. But there’s no way I could handle a diverse range of Japanese sake, shochu, craft beers, many fruit flavored ones, then an assortment of wines. The palate just can’t absorb all those flavors and intensities over a 3-4 hour period. So being in Asia I decided to focus on Asian alcohol and craft beers, including the emerging craft beer segment in Taiwan. Managing to finally pull myself away from the dazzling selection of Japanese Shochu and sake I made my way to the many Belgian beers that are available around Taiwan and the island’s homegrown craft beers including Bazu and Taiwan Head Brewers. I am really impressed with the range of beers, the quality and taste, and the actual infusions and flavors from Litchi, very refreshing and thirst quenching, to sour beers, tea infused beers, chocolate and more from the homegrown market. Craft brews are still relatively new compared with the North American market but interest, particularly with the younger generation is growing in Taiwan. Some purists might be put off by some of the fruit beers but I personally think they suite not only local food, but the climate, especially in Northern Taiwan with it’s extremely hot and humid summers. Nothing like quenching your thirst with a refreshing light litchi beer with maybe a plate of spicy squid on the side. Get exclusive travel content! If you haven't yet discovered Israel as a country to add to your "must-visit" bucket list, you need to do it. Just check out , and for my reports from last year, during which I toured the fitness and exercise scene in Israel. As you read, you'll definitely want to click here tune in to the audio podcast episode that accompanies this episode, which has includes an audio version of the article you're about to read, along with a bonus interview from the folks at Scio, the pocket molecular sensor I write about later in this article. The audio is brought to you by , which is where I buy crazy equipment for my home gym like Zombie kettlebells, battle ropes and sandbags, along with tasty functional foods like Pink Himalayan Sea Salt and Organic Raw Walnut Butter. . OK, let's jump into the top 10 things you can learn from the burgeoning health, wellness and nutrition scene in Israel (and by the way, the photo above is me covered in mud at the Dead Sea). -------------------------- 1. Vegan Food Can Be Damn Tasty On our very first evening in Tel Aviv, we stumbled upon "", a unique vegan restaurant located in the heart of Tel Aviv. From roasted mushroom pate to organic rye and spelt bread to a "sabha" of hot black-eyed peas sautéed with tomatoes, garlic and cilantro on organic tahini (a rich and thick eggplant paste), we dined in style after a long day on the airplane. But the highlight of the meal - by far - was the Mezze spin on "moussaka"- a traditional Greek dish made with layers of eggplant and potatoes with lentil and vegetable stuffing. This stuff literally melts in your mouth. So I twisted the arm of chef Gal Barzilai, a vegetarian and wild plan expert since the age of 13, to hook us up with his custom recipe for moussaka. Here it is. Bon appetit, baby (or as they say here, "be'te-avon"). Mezze Mussaka (as translated from Hebrew to English by ). . Ingredients: -700g chopped onion -2 garlic cloves, crushed -600g orange lentils (soaked/sprouted) - weight after straining and soaking -1 kg mushrooms torn hand into small pieces -100g walnuts + 50g cashew nuts soaked for 30 min in boiled water -1/2 kg sweet potato peeled and thinly sliced -30g sweet paprika -1/4t hot paprika -60g beets -olive oil Vegetables (for layering): -1kg large potatoes, peeled and sliced lengthwise -1 eggplant peeled “zebra” style, sliced thickly (1.5 cm) -handful small tomatoes sliced pretty thick (1 cm) Tahini (put all ingredients in a blender/hand blender; can also mix by hand): -125g raw tahini -150ml cold water -1 garlic clove, crushed -1T wine vinegar -40ml lemon juice -1/2t salt Preparation: 1. Saute 600g onions in white oil (canola, grape seed) when starts to brown, add mushrooms and continue to sauté until nicely browned. Grind in a grinder (thickly, leaving small clump - if needed, add vegetable stock or water), then put aside to chill. 2. Put lentils, cashew and walnuts with the soaking water, final 100g raw onions, beets, 150ml water and both types of paprika in a food processor. 3. Brush potato and eggplant slices with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and put in the oven on very high heat Putting it all together: 1. Brush a pan with a lot of olive oil 2. Layer very densely: eggplant slices, the mushroom/lentil mixture, potatoes, mushroom/lentil mixture, very little tahini, eggplant, thin layer of tahini and top it off with a very dense layer of tomatoes. Brush with olive oil Bake in oven on 190 degrees Celsius for an hour. It is suggested to let the mussaka “rest” for an hour before serving. -------------------------- 2. Dates Aren't Just For Eating The morning after our dinner at , we headed to the Dead Sea - an area well known for it's extremely mineral-rich water - so mineral-rich, in fact, that it is nearly impossible to get your head under the water. You just...float. Here's a video to show you what I mean: Anyways, while at the Dead Sea, we visited . The spa is built on a hillside overlooking a the Dead Sea, and the spa facilities not only contain air saturated with oxygen, but also a bromine treated pool (which I'm floating in on the video above) filled with Dead Sea water. My chosen treatment at Synergy was a "Date Wrap", done with Ein Gedi date mud cream. Apparently, the same polyphenols and flavonoids that make dates such a dark and flavorful fruit also have anti-aging and nourishing properties for the skin. As I lay wrapped up and smelling like a giant human date, I was treated to a head and neck massage. Time will tell if I actually look younger, but apparently this is one of the only places in the world where one can get rubbed down with dates. Eat your heart out, . Anyways, even though I couldn't seem to find date mud cream for you anywhere, this spa did get me thinking about how you can saturate the air in your own house with oxygen, even if you can't smear fruit on your own body. Here's what I found: The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has looked into specific houseplants that can improve indoor air quality by absorbing environmental toxins and increasing oxygen levels. Ferns, particularly the Japanese royal fern, not only release oxygen into the air but also absorb formaldehyde. The Boston fern adds both oxygen and humidity to indoor air. Gerbera daisy purifies and boosts the oxygen level of the air of your home while you sleep at night, making this a good choice for bedrooms. Other indoor plants considered highly efficient in oxygen production and air purification include heartleaf philodendron, snake plant, spider plant, Chinese evergreen and golden pothos. So there you have it. NASA studies indicate that 15 to 18 plants in 6- to 8-inch-diameter pots will adequately increase the oxygen in the air in an 1,800-square-foot residential home. This translates to approximately one large potted plant or two smaller potted plants about every 100 square feet. Now your home can be just like this (and here's a photo of me inside this gorgeous spa). -------------------------- 3. You Can Put Coconut Milk In Your Cocktails Yes, you simply must drink some alcohol while in Israel. I of course, have been, every night. Here's an idea of the crazy cocktail concoctions I was served just last night at the famous (this is an advantage of being a blogger - they just brought me a sample platter of cocktails). -Hendrix Masala: Gin Hendrix, Campari, Sake, Red Vermouth, Masala Tea -Lady Gin: Gin, Chartreuse, Cucumber, Fresh Lime, Ginger -Red Old Sage: Sage, Stolichnoya, Pomegranate, Ginger -Green Tai: Stoli, Sake, Litchi, Cream, Green Tea -Sharp Satori: Pineapple, Stolichnoya ginger, Remy Martin, Wasabi, Lemongrass And my favorite... -Punducherry: Strawberry Vodka, Vermouth, Coconut Milk, Lemongrass, Herbal Berries With a mix of herbs, fresh muddled fruits and a few goodies thrown in like coconut milk and green tea, I actually wasn't too guilty after indulging in this alcohol-infused sampling. Go ahead and try one of these recipes for yourself this holiday season (just be sure to ). This may come as no surprise to you if you listened to Podcast #267, in which we had the following conversation about the and the olive oil martinis I make (): Ben: ...now, I actually I’m part of this club called the They send 3 bottles of olive oil to my house every quarter from like a different area in the world like Australia or Chile or this last one is from Italy. Brock: You really know how to party, don’t you? Ben: Well, that’s what I’m getting at. You can do olive oil tasting, it’s actually kinda interesting. It’s somewhere a wine and that you start to recognize the flavors and the aromas and whether an olive oil is herbaceous or sweet or smoky, etc. but you can also make drinks out of olive oil and what I’ll do is take a shot of olive oil and put that like in a martini shaker and then I’ll take a really nice vodka and put 1-2 shots of that in there, squeeze a lemon, do a little bit of olive juice, so it’s kind of like a dirty martini with a splash of olive oil and then I’ll just strain that into a martini glass, sprinkle a little bit of sea salt on there, garnish with an olive and it’s olive oil vodka martini and it taste fantastic like the olive oil adds this splash of flavor that you don’t get in a regular martini and the mouth feel, like you’d think it be like oily but it’s actually got this really cool kinda mouth feel, it’s a very enjoyable drink. Anyone who hasn’t tried an olive oil martini before should try one. So there you have it. Now you can add coconut milk into your cocktails too. L'chaim! (photo below is me with the other bloggers and my wife, washing down our cocktails with a tasty glass of Jordanian merlot) -------------------------- 4. You Can Exercise Anywhere When I'm traveling, I have standby workouts, and this trip to Israel is no exception. For example, if I find a gym, I'll often do my twist on a 5x5 workout - which is basically 5 sets of 5 repetitions of 5 different heavy lifting exercises. But I throw mobility and movement exercises in the 90 second to 2 minute recovery periods between each 5 rep lift, like this: -5x5 Bench - Walking lunges while reaching for the sky (10 per leg) for recovery -5x5 Barbell Back Squat - Bird Dog Opposite Arm-Opposite Leg Extensions (10/side) for recovery -5x5 Power Clean - Ab Hollowing With Back On Ground With Deep Breathing (10 breaths) for recovery -5x5 Deadlift - “Quiet” Box Jumps With Silent Landing (10 reps) for recovery -5x5 Push Press - Bicycle Crunches (10/side) for recovery If I'm limited to a hotel room workout, I'll often strap on a (use 20% discount code GREEN1) and do a body weight workout for 4-6 rounds like this: -20x burpees -10x lunge jumps for each leg -20x rows -20x mountain climbers per leg -60 second handstand hold against wall during recovery And of course, just like Venice Beach and Miami, they have gyms along the beach here in Tel Aviv, so you can throw down a weight workout with the locals while you're cycling or jogging on the boardwalk along the Mediterranean Sea. Incidentally, whether I'm traveling or I'm at home, I log every workout I do, 365 days a year, for all (if you're already an Inner Circle member, just and click "Life Of Ben"). -------------------------- 5. You Can Measure Anything. Really. As you listen to the audio version of this article, you're going to hear a special interview with a start-up located right here in the heart of Tel Aviv: . SCiO is the world's first portable molecular sensor that literally fits in the palm of your hand. It contains a tiny spectrometer and allows you to get instant information about the chemical make-up of just about anything around you, sent directly to your phone. SCiO is based on near-IR spectroscopy analysis method. The physical basis for this method is that each type of molecule vibrates in its own unique way, and these vibrations interact with light to create its own unique optical signature. The device includes a light source that illuminates the sample and an optical sensor (the spectrometer) that collects the light reflected from the sample. The spectrometer breaks down the light to its spectrum, which includes all the information required to detect the result of this interaction between the illuminated light and the molecules in the sample. Normal spectrometers are big (about the size of a laptop) and expensive (tens of thousands of dollars). SCiO is unique as it is based on a tiny spectrometer, designed from the ground up to be mass-produced with low cost optics - with minimal compromise on the analysis capabilities. So based on this technology, SCiO can actually read the chemical make-up of any materials around you, including food, plants, medication, oil and fuels, plastics and wood. For example, you can: -Get nutritional facts about different kinds of food: salad dressings, sauces, fruits, cheeses, and much more. -See how ripe an avocado is, through the peel. -Find out the quality of your cooking oil. -Know the well being of your plants. -Analyze soil or hydroponic solutions. -Authenticate medications or supplements. -Upload and tag the spectrum of any material on earth to our database (including your own body). Every time you use SCiO you actually help to build a database of knowledge about the stuff around us. The bigger the SCiO community gets, the more data SCiO will have about different materials and this goes right back to the community of users. , and listen to my podcast interview with the inventors here. -------------------------- Alright, that's it for now...but more to come later, including information about a brand new startup that can analyze and give you instant nutritional facts on any recipe you find on any food blog or website, anywhere, and another startup that allows you to instantly check how polluted the air is where you're at, and the "cleanest air" routes for running, hiking, or cycling. Stay tuned. Shalom - and be sure to if you need killer fitness gear or functional foods that optimize performance, stay tuned for more on what you can learn from the wellness and nutrition scene in Israel, extra entertaining videos from this trip, and tips on taking your own to health and fitness vacation to Israel.
