Does the world need another mapping project and an open source one at that? Meta, Amazon web Services, Tom Tom & Microsoft think so and teamed up to create the Overture Maps Foundation, with Marc Prioleau at the helm. The Overture Maps Foundation is a new organization within the open source Linux Foundation. It aims to improve mapping services by focusing on open map data that meets evolving market needs. By collaborating and sharing data, the foundation seeks to avoid duplication of efforts and allow businesses, governments, and organizations to concentrate on developing unique and value-added mapping applications. The foundation acknowledges the importance of proprietary data but emphasizes the benefits of open data for innovation and efficiency. While not currently seen as a major threat, the foundation's position aligns with the idea that proprietary mapping data should be distinct enough to provide value and not easily replaceable by freely available alternatives.Introduction to Overture Maps Foundation 00:02The Overture Maps Foundation is a new organization started within the Linux Foundation, aimed at open map data. It focuses on meeting the evolving market needs and improving map data quality. The foundation caters to individuals and organizations building map services, whether they are commercial entities, government entities, or NGOs. Marc Prioleau's Background in Mapping 00:19Marc Prioleau, the executive director of the Overture Maps Foundation, has a long history in the mapping world. He has worked in the GPS and mapping space for over 20 years, starting with Trimble Navigation and later working for companies like Telcantar, DeCarta, and Mapbox. His experience lies in developing large volume mapping applications and working with companies to improve their mapping services. The Need for Overture Maps Foundation 02:41The need for the Overture Maps Foundation arose due to the increasing demands of map data. As mapping applications have evolved, the requirements for map data, including attributes, refresh rates, and spatial accuracy, have continuously risen. To keep up with these demands, the foundation focuses on providing open map data to enable companies to build richer and more differentiated mapping services. Changing World and Data 14:08The world is constantly changing, and data plays a crucial role in keeping up with these changes. Different industries and sectors require specific data to meet their unique needs. Companies, businesses, and governments utilize data to make informed decisions and build upon existing data layers. Collaboration and Open Source 14:32Collaboration and open-source initiatives have proven to be valuable in enhancing data quality, efficiency, and resource allocation. Open data, when combined with other data sources, becomes even more powerful. Removing barriers and sharing resources can lead to collective improvement and focus on more innovative aspects. Utilizing Ambient Data for Map Building 23:18AIS is exploring various sources of ambient data to enhance its map building capabilities. These sources include GPS traces, imagery, computer vision, and other signals. AI technology, such as computer vision, can extract valuable map data from imagery. Additionally, signals like movement data and other unique sources can contribute to accurate and up-to-date maps. Indoor location challenges 28:36Indoor location, particularly in multi-story buildings like shopping malls and airports has been challenging. It was difficult to determine the floor level and detect when someone entered a business on a different level. The speaker mentions that visual positioning systems are being explored as a solution, using the world around you for positioning.Subscribe to our 3x per week newsletter at https://www.nearmedia.co/subscribe/
In our first episode back for AHRI Snapshots this year, we chat with Dr Hira Shaukat, who previously was an AHRI PhD candidate. Hira worked on 3D mapping of soil moisture throughout her PhD. Part of her work involved looking at how farmers could utilise degraded land affected by salinity. This involved figuring out what soil conditions would be suit the plant Leptospermum nitens. Nectar from this plant is a source of high-value medicinal honey production and can provide income from agriculturally marginal lands. This is a deviation a bit away from the themes of weed control we usually cover in this podcast, however, looking at farming systems holistically is important. Land not suitable for crops can be a haven for weeds to proliferate, which in turn can end up in the crop. Planting a valuable species like Leptospermum nitens can provide an additional income source, and reduce the land availability for weeds to grow. Hira chats to us about her findings, as well as the other applications 3D mapping can provide growers. You can follow AHRI on Twitter here. Today, I want to explore the world of connected dental space with a Brooklyn-based technology company called Toothpic. The company is minimizing the risk of major dental work with an approach that it's calling Smart Dental. Smart Dental is based on applying new technologies like Teledentistry, 3D Mapping, IoT-connected toothbrushes, and augmented reality. It shifts care from treatment to prevention with the enablement of new diagnostic approaches such as AI pattern matching to guide dentists' diagnoses. It heralds an era of ultra-personalized oral care for patients. Through an app, users upload pictures of their teeth which are then assessed by a network of dentists on an ongoing basis. Patients no longer need to wait for appointments and have up to the minute access to their dental records. The improvements in dental health are significant. Toothpic was founded by Mark Moore, an Irish-born former physicist, back in 2016. Mark started developing the concepts around Smart Dental after his father (a dentist) diagnosed a dental issue from a picture Mark sent him while studying Nanotechnology at Trinity College, Dublin. If it was possible to accurately make a diagnosis from an iPhone picture, what could be possible if IoT, AI, and Data Analytics could also be applied? Toothpic now numbers around 50 employees in Brooklyn (HQ) and Dublin, counts Mark Zuckerburg's father as a senior advisor, and works with a number of the major insurers in the US (inc Blue Cross) and oral care providers (inc. Phillips). Mark joins me on the podcast to talk about the rise of smart dental for patients, making dental practices dental secure and the role of technology in the evolution of dental insurance polices.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.06.30.181255v1?rss=1 Authors: Wang, X., Zeng, W., Yang, X., Fang, C., Han, Y., Fei, P. Abstract: We have developed an open-source software called BIRDS (bi-channel image registration and deep-learning segmentation) for the mapping and analysis of 3D microscopy data of mouse brain. BIRDS features a graphical user interface that is used to submit jobs, monitor their progress, and display results. It implements a full pipeline including image pre-processing, bi-channel registration, automatic annotation, creation of 3D digital frame, high-resolution visualization, and expandable quantitative analysis (via link with Imaris). The new bi-channel registration algorithm is adaptive to various types of whole brain data from different microscopy platforms and shows obviously improved registration accuracy. Also, the attraction of combing registration with neural network lies in that the registration procedure can readily provide training data for network, while the network can efficiently segment incomplete/defective brain data that are otherwise difficult for registration. Our software is thus optimized to enable either minute-timescale registration-based segmentation of cross-modality whole-brain datasets, or real-time inference-based image segmentation for various brain region of interests. Jobs can be easily implemented on Fiji plugin that can be adapted for most computing environments. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info

In this Exclusive interview we joined with Dr. John-Mark Staude and Erika Sweeney of Riverside Resources www.rivres.com/ (TSX.V: RRI | OTCQB: RVSDF), as we discussion the Los Cuarentas located in Sonora, Mexico. We will discuss rock sample results of 26 grams, target zones, and permitting. We will provide 3D Mapping along with Geological Mapping as visuals. Los Cuarentas is a low sulfidation epithermal Au-Ag target characterized by strong argillic and phyllic alteration surrounding low sulfidation epithermal vein systems that host gold and silver mineralization. Vein textures and silica polymorphs suggest that the higher levels of the epithermal systems are present throughout the under-explored district. Hydrothermal alteration is overprinted in places by strong oxidation after pyrite and other sulfides. Several target zones have been identified and most are ready for drilling; these are named: Santa Rosalia, Santa Rosalia Sur, and El Sombrero. The property is located in northern Sonora, 170 km northeast of Hermosillo and located 17 km northwest of SilverCrest Metals’ Las Chispas Mine (PEA (Preliminary Economic Assessment), estimates annual production of 9,559,000 oz AgEq[1]). The Los Cuarentas Project is also located 15 km northeast of Premier Gold’s Mercedes Mine, (produced 89,699 oz Au and 321,814 oz Ag in 2018[2]). Riverside exploration work Riverside’s exploration team is currently in the field completing mapping and sampling work along strike of the known vein system and believes there is also great potential to identify new veins across the greater property package. Riverside has not yet performed any exploration work at the property and looks to begin a program in the near future to confirm historical results. In January, 2020 Riverside collected a total of 16 rock samples from selective areas from its first sampling program at the Project with six (6) of the samples returning greater than 5 g/t Au and up to 25.7 g/t Au and 119.7 g/t Ag (see Table 1 below). Riverside’s exploration team mapped and re-sampled known historical work areas to validate the accuracy of the high-grade samples collected in the past and to initially confirm two of the primary targets; Santa Rosalia and Santa Rosalia Sur. The results from the 16 samples collected by Riverside have been encouraging with the top six samples providing high-grade assays and a good starting point for the Company to continue to work up and further expand targets at Los Cuarentas, which includes areas around and expanding from the former mining operations and major extensive exposed undrilled vein systems. Mapping is much different than it was even just a few years ago. Three-dimensional models are the new standard, improving upon the traditional two-dimensional renderings and blueprints. Drones are a big part of this revolution and are giving everyone from architects to surveyors unprecedented access to landscapes, structures and worksites. Irene Kwan, Microdrones' Sales Manager for Southeast Asia, joined Propelling to explain how construction companies and municipalities are taking a new look at the way things have been done in the past. “Traditionally for urban planning, it is carried out in two dimensions. So mostly, they have the experts there and they do the planning based on their feelings and their experience. But there is the problem, that we don’t actually know how accurate it is,” Kwan said. Accuracy is important in any business decision but especially when mapping out entire city landscapes. Drones are providing this accuracy and, when coupled with technology like augmented reality, can give professionals complete immersion into a space. This level of precision is unprecedented and is opening new insights into the best use of land, materials and budgets. In southeast Asia specifically, this accuracy can be lifesaving. Many areas in the region are prone to flooding and natural disaster, so it is crucial that public office holders have exact routes mapped out for citizens. Drones are helping to identify vulnerabilities in cities that would have previously gone unnoticed until was too late. Listen to Kwan explain how three-dimensional modeling can be applied to urban sprawl, land development, virtual reality, emergency management and even some incredible Hollywood special effects.

Amir Rubin is the co-founder of Paracosm, a company that developed a handheld device that creates 3D color maps of real-world environments. “We’ve turned reality,” says Amir, “into a video game.” Amir is a second-generation entrepreneur. Both his parents are PhD’s, but his father quit academia to start a hardware store, and later a bakery. Amir wonders if any entrepreneur would make it without some level of “blind enthusiasm.”
The ETH spin-off ANYbotics offers a very special product: a dog-like robot that goes by the name of ANYmal. ANYmal is already a star on YouTube and he even appeared in the sci-fi series "The X-Files". But movie star isn’t the main role he’s supposed to play – in the future, ANYmal is to play a leading role in maintenance work in the sewerage system or on offshore platforms. However, for this to happen, the company must identify potential customers and convince them of ANYmal’s capabilities.
