From an early age, she lived many lives, dreaming of endless possibilities. She traversed the globe, trained as a classical musician, and navigated alternative, traditional, and outdoor schooling systems. Bullied and misunderstood, she turned to solitude in nature, travel, and soul-nourishing friendships as her greatest teachers and catalysts for growth. Growing up during British Columbia's green rush with hippie parents and facing early health challenges, her path in wellness began to take shape. At 15, she attended her first ceremony with her father in Peru. By 20, she completed her first yoga teacher training. A year later, a near-death experience while surfing in Nicaragua compelled her to leave nursing school and dive headfirst into entrepreneurship. She found early success, escaped a narcissistic relationship with a con artist, and eventually reached a breaking point as her health struggles resurged and severe depression took hold. This chapter of soul-searching and unraveling ultimately led her back to love—sliding into her DMs in the form of Dallas, a childhood friend and high-school crush. With his unwavering support, Savannah began to heal and return to herself—and to Baja Sur, where her father built their off-grid sanctuary: the dOMe hOMe retreat. Today, she creates transformational spaces for high-achieving women to slow down, reconnect with what truly matters, and break free from the burnout of “success.” Her work guides women to reprogram beliefs around achievement and abundance by returning to their most authentic selves.IG: @_savfox and @domehomeretreat

Meet Noel Bhavani Cianci, the founder and owner of Los Sagroados Horse Sanctuary in Pescadero. On a recent trip to Baja Sur, I chose to stay at Los Sagrados when I was looking for out-of-the-ordinary and “on-brand” accommodations near Todos Santos for my conversation with Carl Honoré. Carl is an award-winning author, TED speaker, and the voice of the slow movement. We found Los Sagrados quickly, just inland from Highway One, a short drive down a dirt road and behind a large locked gate. The ranch accepts guests happily. Carl stayed in a tidy stone cabin, and I chose the glamping tent. There's a bunk room inside the barn, and camping (for a fee) is allowed. The property features a communal kitchen and bathrooms. The outdoor showers may be the best in Baja! In this Slow Baja Conversation, we discuss Noel's background in fashion styling and the healing arts, her long love of horses, the sanctuary's history, visiting and volunteering opportunities, and the slow vibe that permeates the property. After visiting Los Cabos on a quick weekend getaway with friends, Lew was captivated by the beauty of the ocean, terrain, and people of Baja Sur. Genevieve Mattar and Kevin Branscum met in South America while exploring the Andes ruins and the Amazon forests. He was an American seeking adventure, and she was a travel guide leading a group of French Canadians. The couple soon married and as Kevin was a Southern Californian and seasoned Baja traveler, they began exploring the remote regions of Baja Sur. They became interested in the old mission trail while visiting the Sierra de San Francisco rock art. One day on a mule ride, they came across a track that looked different from the one they were following. They asked their local guide about it. He replied, “That is the old mission trail, el camino antiguo de los misioneros.” El Camino Real. The El Camino Real, or “King's Highway,” is the mission trail leading from Loreto in Baja Súr, Mexico, to all Californias. They include Baja Súr, Baja, and Alta California, better known as the state of California. The mystery of that trail, combined with its history and the beauty of its surroundings, hooked them. For twenty-two years, they've regularly returned to explore El Camino Real, locating and accurately mapping additional trail segments. They hope to find and preserve the exact position of as much of the El Camino Real as possible. Only through sharing the story and developing eco-tourism --will the historic trail remain alive. Learn more about their work here.

The friends who were with Shanquilla Robinson, 25, when she passed away last month while on holiday in Mexico put the death down to alcohol poisoning. However, Mexican authorities confirmed to The Daily Beast on Thursday that a homicide investigation is now being conducted into the death of the North Carolina hairstylist. The new information also goes against a previous claim made by the US State Department that the evidence did not necessarily prove Robinson was killed. The State Attorney General's Office for the northwest Mexican state of Baja Sur stated in an email that the investigative file was initially opened as a femicide, referring to a particular category of hate crime.A representative for the AG's office said, "The simple fact that the victim is a woman doesn't determine that it's a femicide. If the investigation does not suggest that Robinson was killed because of her gender, it will be reclassified as a conventional homicide."When Robinson and six pals went to San Jose del Cabo to celebrate one of their birthdays, he passed away under strange circumstances late last month. Robinson had a successful hair-braiding business in Charlotte. The group chose to remain in on their first night in town because they were staying in a pricey, five-bedroom luxury villa that cost upwards of $1,600 per night. When Robinson called her mother to let her know she had arrived safely and would be in touch again the following day, she claimed everything was good, local outlet WJZY said. A personal chef had made dinner for the travelers.Robinson passed away in less than twenty-four hours.Pease be careful of the company you keep. The good news is that more roosterfish have moved into the area, especially close up to the rocks and those long stretches of flat beach. Most of the fish I'm seeing are 15-30 pounders and, as far as I can tell, all getting released. Hopefully, especially if the larger ladyfish baits or mullet move into the shallows, we'll start seeing the really big monster roosters up to 100 pounds!...Jonathan Roldan, Tailhunter International This episode is also available as a blog post: http://bajabytes.com/2022/05/10/roosters-romp-in-baja-sur/

Hello everyone and welcome to Episode Forty Seven! I hope you all remain safe and healthy out there. I'm back in SMP World Headquarters after a brief hiatus (AKA herping) in Mexico of all places. I went down to Baja California with a group of folks and we dipped all the way down to the northern portions of Baja Sur, and I can now claim to have traveled every inch of Mexico's highway one. I'm thinking there should be a patch or a merit badge for that. So a couple thousand miles in a little Chevy Spark and here's a shout-out to Jake Scott for being an excellent companion in that tiny car's close quarters. One step above a clown car and yet it only held two clowns and their luggage. PATRONS: I want to thank all of the show's patrons who contribute to keep this show rolling. It goes without saying that I appreciate each and every one of you. And here together for the first time is a list of all the show's supoorters to date: Justin Michels, Jason Jones of Herp MX, Smetlogik AKA Rob Kreutzer, Ryan Borgmann, Joshua Wallace, Jill Rials, Marty Whalin, Chris Smith, Dr. Emily Taylor, John Burris, Kamil Scepanski, Brandon Kong, Issac Chellman, Dr James van Dyke, Brandon Ballard, Mike Rochford, Josef Thompson, Dr. Alex Krohn, Matt Ratcliffe, Jeroen Speybroek, Bryan Hughes, Brandon Bourassa, Josh Holbrook, James McGhee, Michael Moffat, Andy O'Connor, Jake Scott, Deb Krohn, Duane McDermott, John Sullivan, Josh Emms, Justin Elden, Matt Cage, Patrick Connolly, Chris McMartin, Michael Cravenss, Ana Ware, Tim Warfel, David Burkart, Adam Cooner, Dr. Bill Peterman, Cynthia Samake, Paul-Erik Bakland, William Bone, Jeremiah Easter, Richard Legere, Tom Eles, Jeremy Schumacher, Neill Jones, Alec Gordon, Martin Habecker, Daniel Dye, Clint Henke, Ross Maynard, Nick Sobel, Moses Michelsohn, Myles Masterson, and Ben Genter. Now THAT is quite a list, and some of the coolest people I know. Thank you all. Andrew DuBois is our featured guest for this episode. Andrew and I have been friends for a number of years and we've been to a number of amazing herp spots across the planet in that time. Andrew is a senior natural resources specialist (and a wildlife ecologist) with Jefferson County Open Space in Colorado and part of our conversation centered on the work he does there with leopard frogs, prairie rattlesnakes, and other interesting critters. Microphone or not, I enjoy talking to Andrew, he is a deep thinker, and I always come away from our conversations having learned something new or seeing something from a different perspective. Aside from collecting data and managing the herps and other flora and fauna that live on the 55K acres across JCOS, Andrew and other colleagues also engage with the general public who recreate on these lands, and I've included some related links, including Jefferson County Open Space Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Andrew also took part in a rattlesnake education video produced by JCOS which provides an excellent overview of the single species of rattlesnake that can be found within JCOS, how to tell it apart from harmless snakes, and where and under what conditions rattlesnakes might be encountered. Very useful for Coloradans who may encounter snakes within JCOS. Backpack 'Clip Card' mentioned in the show. As always I enjoyed talking with Andrew, not only about the work he's engaged in, but also about herpetofauna and herping as well. You can find Andrew on Instagram and Twitter, his email is adubois@jeffco.us and his professional profile is on Weebly. Thanks for coming on the show again, Andrew! And thanks for listening everyone! And as always, please keep the comments and suggestions coming, and please take time to rate the show on your podcast platform! The show email is somuchpingle@gmail.com, and there's also a So Much Pingle group on Facebook, for discussion, comments, feedback, suggestions, herp confessions, tips for herping better, etc. Cheers! Mike

When life pulls the rug out from underneath you, how do you stay balanced? Through the practice of equanimity we learn to remain centered, stable and grounded despite life's ups and downs. Not only that, one in three adults aren't getting enough sleep for optimal health. Sara-Mai and Karuna take a deep dive into equanimity, balance, and practical tips for feeling restored in a time of great uncertainty and sleeplessness. Sara-Mai Conway goes on to say about equanimity and the art of balance, "My October workshop is all about balance and equanimity. We are so removed from circadian rhythm in our crazy, busy, stressful lives. It's like the stress is the water you swim in and we don't really even realize how much this is affecting us until we do something like go out into the desert where, you know, there's maybe not electricity or the when it gets dark, what can you do? You know that kind of stuff? Becoming more in tune with how our bodies have developed to best express themselves after thousands and thousands of years living without technology and without electricity, I think is only of benefit to us as happy, healthy human beings.... Are we surviving? Are we really thriving the way that we could be? Sleeping better and really giving your body rest, letting your body see what a drastic change that is and how much it can improve your life is, you know, maybe the first step of just letting go of even more of the things that just keep us off balance or on edge constantly." Sara-Mai shares her workshop "Equanimity: Remaining Balanced in a Topsy Turvy World" on Mind Oasis starting 10 October 2021. Learn More Her FREE Mini-Workshop, "A Brief Morning Practice for More Restful Nights" is happening on Mind Oasis on 26 September 2021. Welcome back to The Nick Fong Podcast. Join Nick in this great conversation with Lorena Dromundo, a professional biker, who has competed nationally and internationally with impressive achievements in one of the most intense levels of biking: downhill. This type of biking takes place on steep slopes where riders may descend from top speeds while negotiating tight turns, jumping over obstacles like rocks or logs, high-speed descents through forest, and, in some cases, very steep and narrow streets like those of the city of Taxco, in Guerrero. Downhill involves a lot of passion and, of course, is not accident-free. Baja Sur is known for many types of sports, like surf and kitesurfing, but its landscape makes other great activities possible such as Mountain Biking and downhill. Lorena recently fell in love with Baja, so we talked about everything, from her beginnings in this sport as a child, how she made her way as the only woman practicing downhill in Mexico, and of course her future plans in Baja with her academy.

Debbie Weil brings her husband, Sam Harrington, back onto the show. A retired physician, Sam is NOT a believer in midlife-crisis camps nor in navel gazing, which is what he told family and friends Debbie was dragging him across the country to do. But somehow, after both of them were twice vaccinated, Debbie persuaded Sam to get on a plane and fly to Mexico’s Baja Sur. Their destination: Modern Elder Academy. If you've been listening to the podcast, you've heard about MEA. You could call MEA a wellness retreat. It’s idyllic: simple accommodations overlook the crashing waves of a broad mile-long beach. Birdsong fills the air, water trickles from fountains, and bright Bougainvillea blooms everywhere. An organic garden produces wonderful meals and a dusty dirt road leads to the nearest village. But MEA is more than a wellness retreat. It’s also a school - and a community - of like-minded people. MEA tends to attract open-minded individuals from their 30s to 70s, who are on a quest to define "what's next” in their lives and who are willing to think differently about aging. Guests can attend structured discussions, there’s time for journal writing and reflection, and there are meditation and yoga classes. Debbie and Sam talk about a few of the topics that were on offer during their two-week stay, including the difference between growth vs. fixed mindsets (you can guess which one is preferable) and something called appreciative inquiry which is an expansive way of both listening and asking questions. Sam ultimately admits that he IS feeling calm and centered. Jeffrey Westman arrived in San Juanico as a 19-year-old on a surf trip and fell in love with it. The teen dreamed of finding a surf shack and staying forever. Not surprisingly, college and a career won out, but the dream stayed with him. Thirty years later, he has built the San Juanico Surf Society, a danish infused, Mexican-modern resort for friends and family. Located on a bluff above "Panga Beach," the SJ Surf Society is a gleaming beacon of clean lines, industrial beauty, and humble hospitality. After his career as a photographer and printer led him to Scandanavia, Westman worked his way into a new thing called the internet. He ran Norway, Sweden, and Denmark for Yahoo. His timely exit allowed him the resources to try his hand as a potato farmer in Northern Sweden. Not something that one usually says during a conversation about building a health and wellness retreat in Baja. His return to the San Francisco Bay Area allowed him to combine his business acumen and his love of farming into a career in the non-profit sector, helping organic farmers thrive. In the process, he converted his Sebastopol farm into a retreat property and found that he enjoyed providing hospitality and creating community through being an Airbnb host. Westman says he "drew the short straw and had to look after his mother, who had retired to Baja Sur." A property in Loreto followed as Westman built his Airbnb portfolio. Old memories of that surf trip to San Juanico led him across the peninsula, and the hunt for the next project began. In this conversation, we hear the backstory of building a dream property in Baja. We can't wait to return to the SJ Surf Society and chill out in style. The SJ Surf Society is Slow Baja approved! In today's Travel Talk with Slow Baja, we sit down with Sheila, the gregarious owner of Zopilotes Ice Cream in San Bartolo BCS. Originally from Salmon Arm, BC, Canada, Sheila, and her husband first visited Baja Sur in 2008. They returned with a fifth-wheel camper in 2009 and bought a house, sight-unseen in 2010. How was the experience of fixing up a home in a country where you don't speak the language? -"there was a lot of swearing and a lot of drinking!" she says with a smile. We stopped by on a sunny afternoon as we drove South from El Triunfo through San Bartolo on our way down to Cabo San Lucas. I let Sheila pick the flavors for me, she returned with a scoop of creamy lime and a scoop of coconut on a beautiful handmade waffle cone. The ice cream was lovely; the creamy lime was just that, a little tang to start followed by a smooth dollop of sweetness, the coconut was a rich and creamy delight. Zopilotes has won Best Ice Cream of the East Cape Competition and is a must-stop destination for ice cream lovers in Baja Sur. Located at Km 128 Carretera Transpeninsular in San Bartolo Baja California Sur and Zopilotes is Slow Baja approved! Enjoy the podcast with Sheila and her 16-year-old employee Kaira, and if you are ever close to San Bartolo, I hope you stop for an ice cream! Visit Zopilotes on Facebook Visit Zopilotes on Instagram

Mexico is home to incredible wildlife spectacles every month of the year. Three of the most famous are friendly gray whales in Baja Sur, overwintering monarch butterflies in oyamel fir forests west of Mexico City, and the world's largest whale shark aggregation off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. In Episode 1 of Mexico Beyond the Beach, we discuss five spectacles you've never heard of - the black sea turtle capital of the world on the Pacific coast, great white sharks at Guadalupe Island, a bat volcano near Calakmul, a firefly forest east of Mexico City, and sailfish chasing baitballs near Isla Mujeres and Cancun. Join us for the first full episode of Mexico Beyond the Beach Podcast.
Hello everyone! We're going to hang around south of the border for just a while longer. Episode Twenty Two was recorded in September in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, at the tail-end of a two week visit to Baja Sur. Tim, Bryan, Matt, Mack, Andy, John, Pat, Shaun, Brandon and Jeni agreed to hang around the hotel for an hour or so, with the notion of having a round table discussion about herping in Mexico. Cumulatively, this bunch has spent hundreds of days in Mexico, across many regions, and I thought it was an appropriate group to cover the subject. Thanks to the media's focus on drug cartels, Mexico can seem like a scary place, and my goal with this round-table was to get folks more comfortable with the idea of visiting and herping there. I can't wait until I get to go back! We may have talked at lot about tacos, but hey, they are pretty terrific in Baja California. Thanks to the whole gang for sitting down and making it a fun conversation! I needed two photos to get everyone included in the round-table (pay no attention to those Little Caesar's pizza boxes). FUTURE SHOW NOTE: My request for herp jargon is coming to an end - the window closes in two weeks! I’ve got a neat little pile, but I need more! Get those pithy phrases and clever words to me via the show email below, and we’ll get a future episode together from the results! And as always, please keep the comments and suggestions coming! The show email is somuchpingle@gmail.com, and there’s also a So Much Pingle group on Facebook, for discussion, comments, feedback, suggestions, herp confessions. shrimp taco recipes, tips for herping better, etc. Stay tuned for more episodes! And don’t forget to herp better! -Mike
