In this week's episode of the EdTech Speaks podcast, Dr. Sher Downing interviews one of our own team members, Jeremy Hopper, Senior Director of Learning Solutions at Downing EdTech. Throughout the conversation, Jeremy shares about his journey in the field of instructional design and its evolution over the years, as the challenges arose from moving to virtual content and the importance of the user experience in online courses. Jeremy shares his experience working in both higher education and the private sector, highlighting the different roles and responsibilities of instructional designers in different contexts. Discussions lead to the transition and impact of the pandemic on the shift to hybrid learning and the use of technology in instructional design. They conclude with a discussion on the future of learning experience and the importance of continuous learning and intentional design. Takeaways: Instructional design has evolved over the years and now encompasses various roles and responsibilities, including instructional development, training, writing, and technology integration. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the shift to online and hybrid learning, highlighting the value and benefits of online education. Instructional designers need to stay updated with emerging trends and technologies, such as AI, AR/VR, adaptive learning, and media development, to create engaging and effective learning experiences. The future of learning experience lies in personalization, cultural relevance, and catering to different learner preferences and needs. Visual design, interactive content, and microlearning are key elements in creating engaging and consumable learning experiences. Curiosity, continuous learning, and intentional design are essential for instructional designers to stay innovative and deliver high-quality educational content. On the topic of Instructional Design evolution, Jeremy says, "A lot of businesses can just take what they have now and put it up online and sell it, but that doesn't mean people are going to engage with it or resonate with it. Instructional designers are having to transition to learning experience designers. So in the past, it was very much instructional design. It's just taking the instructions, designing them, putting them up. You're just designing the educational process. Now we're designing the educational experience where we want students to really engage with the material. We want the material to resonate with them. We want to shape how they're experiencing everything." When is the last time you heard about data fraud? Living in 2023, it probably wasn't long ago that you read an article or heard a news piece on the topic. We welcome you to listen in to this week's EdTech Speaks episode as we interview Nick Lambert. Nick has been working with technology companies his entire career. Starting out with IBM and Sanmina-SCI, Nick moved into the decentralized space in 2011 with Scottish start-up MaidSafe and was their Chief Operating Officer for seven years. Nick is now the CEO of Dock Labs AG, the company behind the Dock network who has created Dock Certs, a platform that enables organizations to create and manage decentralized identities and verifiable credentials. We live in a world where anything can be faked. In a digital world, it's harder and harder to know what information is true and what isn't. Our most important data is now digital, and it's increasingly easier for people to manipulate and fake it to their advantage. This has led to widespread mistrust between people and puts companies at risk of serious liabilities. Nick says, "To make it worse, traditional verification processes are broken. Verifying the authenticity of data is costly, time-consuming and inefficient. It's a huge burden to put on companies that need to consume data. Manual data verification is not suited for today's fast-moving world."Enter...DOCK. When using Dock, organizations can end data fraud and reduce verification costs. Dock's Verifiable Credentials Platform makes data fraud-proof and allows stakeholders to verify its authenticity in seconds – making expensive, time-consuming, and manual verification processes disappear. Specifically, organizations in the education sector can now prevent diploma and certificate fraud, and reduce the time and cost of verifying these documents. Diplomas can now be fraud-proof and instantly verifiable.Learn more and connect with Nick and his work here: Nick's Twitter: https://twitter.com/N1ckLambertNick's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nick-lambert-a760811b/https://dock.iohttps://twitter.com/docknetworkhttps://www.linkedin.com/company/docknetwork Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. What an intriguing guest on the EdTech Speaks podcast! Tune in as I interview a thought leader and expert in the field of air quality and purification, Frederik Hendriksen. Before COVID you may not have given much thought to the topic, but since 2020 when the entire world was restricted to 6 feet separations and mandatory masks, air purification has become a need versus a want. Frederik joins us today to share how his company, Rensair, provides an air purification solution through technology, protecting and enhancing lives through clean air.Rensair's portable, hospital-grade air purifier is helping businesses and communities get back on their feet. Our patented technology, which combines H13 HEPA filtration with germicidal UVC light, was initially developed to meet the strict standards of Scandinavian hospitals. It traps and destroys more than 99.97% of airborne bacteria and viruses, including the Coronavirus family, helping to protect lives through clean air.Rensair's Company History: The core technology behind the Rensair air purifier was developed twenty years ago by Henrik Hendriksen, a Danish ventilation engineer, and Fredrick's father. When one of his sons developed severe allergies as a child, Henrik couldn't find a remedy. So he invented one. Leveraging his deep knowledge, he combined the most advanced hospital-grade air cleaning technologies in a compact, portable design.Subsequently, his innovative design was sought after by hospitals, institutions and care homes across Scandinavia.Henrik's legacy endures today. In 2020, his twin sons Christian and Frederik Hendriksen set up Rensair to evolve the original product design, continue its manufacture and distribute it worldwide. Watch the story here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZe21Nfdy_4&feature=youtu.beFrederik says, "Air purification is key to mitigating the risk of Covid infection. If companies are to encourage employees and customers to return to their premises, practical steps must be taken to prioritize health & safety. Just as people expect pure water from the tap or hygienic food from the supermarket, so too they expect clean air in buildings and shared spaces. It's not just an expectation, it's a human right."Learn more and connect with Frederik here:https://rensair.com/https://twitter.com/RensairPurifierhttps://www.linkedin.com/company/rensair/https://www.instagram.com/rensairpurifier/https://www.facebook.com/rensairairpurifier Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Have you heard of Wyebot? If not, then be sure to tune in to today's episode of the EdTech Speaks podcast where I welcome back Roger Sands, co-Founder and CEO of Wyebot, Inc.We unpack the ideas behind Wyebot, a WiFi automation platform used in education facilities, as well as enterprise and healthcare facilities. What's the differentiator? Wyebot's AI-backed technology automates and solves WiFi issues that would normally be ticketed to engineers. This process, according to the company, results in a 70 percent reduction in WiFi problem tickets and a decrease in onsite problem-solving visits by up to 80 percent. When asked about his prediction on tech and education trends for the future, Roger says, "Technology will become more and more important and hybrid schedules will still be popular. This hybrid work environment is with us, the industry has mastered it, and we need ways to support this new ecosystem."Roger has 17 years of executive management positions in successful networking startups and Fortune 500 companies. Today, the EdTech Speaks podcast interviews Ahsan Rizvi, CEO and Founder, Kiddom. Ahsan's story starts out when he was a young boy, going to school in Pakistan. When he was in 7th grade, he wanted to switch school systems, because that was the best way for him to get into colleges in the US. In order to attend the new school he had to pass an entrance exam, and based on the results, the school picked one, single candidate out of 1,100+ each year. He managed to pass by studying through the summer while all his friends were outside playing soccer (which he really envied!). This set the framework (at such a young age) for understanding the power of education. This background led Ahsan to create Kiddom, the first all-in-one education platform for high-quality digital curricula. It integrates curriculum management, instruction, assessment, and communication tools into one solution, saving schools valuable time, resources and money. With the flexibility to access and edit curriculum from any location, Kiddom is the only education platform that can effectively support teachers and learners engaging in in-class, blended, hybrid or distance learning scenarios, as well as in the quick pivots between them. Headquartered in San Francisco with an office in New York City, Kiddom is a team of passionate educators, designers, and developers building technology to enable all teachers and learners to unlock their full potential. When asked about his hardships, Ahsan said, "It took 7 months to get the first investor meeting for Kiddom's first round of financing, since I had no connections in the community. Going through the constant rejections from investors was hard without a paycheck. Getting that first “yes” was a huge step towards making Kiddom a reality and that lesson of tenacity has helped shape that same tenacity within Kiddom."Listen in as Ahsan shares how the Kiddom platform can be the key to great education of the future, built for all students of all abilities. The best advice I can give you and your organization is to take the leap of faith of investing in yourself. The development of your emotional intelligence will ensure your personal, business, and career success. An organization's profitability and success are a reflection of its level of emotional intelligence. EdTech Speaks interviews another intriguing guest by the name of R. David Lankes. David is the incoming Virginia & Charles Bowden Professor in Librarianship at the University of Texas at Austin. His latest book Forged in War explores how today's technology and media world is a result of over a century of war and conflict. He teaches online, researches online and presents online. Noticing a pattern here? Every part of his job is enabled and transformed with technology.Much of his focus on this episode is on librarians. These are community-based agencies of change linked across all parts of a community (schools to public to medical, to law, to academic). David encourages others to see librarians as partners instead of simply service providers. Libraries today are more than simply book services, which seems like an archaic concept, knowing what we know today. He believes that mass social networks for professionals will evolve to peer-based learning networks, accelerated by advances in machine and deep learning. The future of education is better by combining experience with publicly available professional development with formal education. If this doesn't come to fruition, he thinks that higher education as we know it may implode from becoming over commoditized credential engines of job training.Recapping the interview, David says, "Academia can be an entrepreneurial place if we think differently. Libraries and Librarians are agents of disruption and reconnection."Learn more and connect with David here:Twitter: https://twitter.com/rdlankesFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/rdlankesLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/r-david-lankes/https://DavidLankes.orgForged in War - https://www.amazon.com/Forged-War-Century-Created-Information/dp/1538148951/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1625749110&sr=8-1 Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Welcome to a very unique episode of the EdTech Speaks podcast where we are joined by Seth Raphael, who is officially the youngest guest we've had the pleasure of interviewing.Seth Raphael is the founder of LinkJoin, a website that organizes and automatically opens virtual classes. He is a student at Las Lomas High School, but also an entrepreneur and programmer. During his virtual 2020 school year, he noticed that he was struggling to remember to join his classes. So he created LinkJoin to help himself and others never be late again. His programming journey started small, with occasional summer camps where he learned the basics of coding and its concepts, but Seth's interest and knowledge spiked during the summer of 2020, when the world was in lockdown and he was stuck inside. After taking a full-fledged online course on Python, he became interested in making websites and quickly picked up the rest of the technologies needed. And when the need arose for one to automatically open his meetings, he knew how to make it. Seth enjoys playing piano, tennis, and ice hockey in his free time, and derives joy from beating his parents at backyard ping-pong.Seth has proven that you don't have to be an adult with multiple degrees to succeed in making a product to help people, you can just work towards a goal of solving a problem, learning as you go.Seth says, "Just getting started is the hardest step - if you have an idea and you think you can get it out there to help people, then just get started and see where it goes."Learn more and connect with Seth here:https://www.linkedin.com/in/seth-raphael-75aa2320a/https://linkjoin.xyz Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
