"I think just the nature of having a shelter that's supportive and animal control has really expedited this as a success…And I think that made a big difference in the city." This episode is sponsored-in-part by Maddie's Fund. Stacy LeBaron talks with Vanessa Forney, founder and president of Bay Area Cats, an organization in Sunnyvale, California focused on spay neuter for pets and trap neuter return. Since stumbling upon a kitten in her neighborhood in 2020, Vanessa has personally trapped over 2,500 cats and kittens, built an efficient volunteer trapping team, and formed a 501(c)(3) that has helped spay/neuter thousands of cats every year. In this episode, Vanessa shares how she quickly moved from rescue-reactive thinking to strategic targeted TNR, focusing her efforts on Sunnyvale and achieving remarkable results through mass trapping techniques and neighborhood-wide approaches. She discusses the importance of data collection, building collaborative relationships with animal control and open intake shelters, and how her organization achieved over 40% reduction in combined shelter intake and TNR program cats between 2022 and 2024. Vanessa also explains the typical timeline for seeing impact (including the initial uptick in requests during the first 12-18 months), the evolution of a TNR organization through different life stages, and why addressing pet spay/neuter is critical for long-term sustainability. Listeners will come away understanding that successful targeted TNR requires patience, collaboration, detailed record-keeping, and a multi-layered approach that addresses both community cats and owned pets. Vanessa's story demonstrates that even young organizations can make significant measurable impact when they focus their resources strategically, build strong community partnerships, and create volunteer networks that make the work sustainable rather than isolating. Press play now for: How targeted TNR achieved over 40% reduction in cat intake in Sunnyvale between 2022-2024 Why geographic focus creates greater impact than spreading resources across multiple areas The 3-5 year timeline for seeing significant results in municipal targeted TNR programs Building collaborative relationships with animal control and open intake shelters Advanced trapping techniques including mass trapping, trap training, and remote control traps The importance of detailed data collection and feeder mapping for strategic planning Why accessible pet spay/neuter is essential for long-term sustainability Creating volunteer teams and community support systems for sustainable TNR work Resources mentioned: Bay Area Cats website (https://bayareacats.org/) Bay Area Cats Instagram (@Bay_Area_TNR) (https://www.instagram.com/bay_area_tnr) Humane Society Silicon Valley (https://hssv.org/) Neighborhood Cats Targeted TNR Training (https://www.neighborhoodcats.org) Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society (https://www.mrfrs.org/) Sponsor Links: Maddie's Fund (https://www.communitycatspodcast.com/maddies633) Follow & Review We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet. This week's Empire Podcast sees us welcome another hat-trick of wonderful guests, as Chris Hewitt has lovely chats with The Smashing Machine writer-director (and Happy Gilmore 2 villain), Benny Safdie, [24:13 - 40:39 approx] and bona fide acting legend, Malcolm McDowell, star of new WWII drama, The Partisan (please excuse the sound quality of Chris' mic); [59:42 - 1:13:48 approx] while John Nugent sits down with Urchin director, Harris Dickinson, about making his directorial debut with the acclaimed drama. [1:37:05 - 1:52:43 approx] Either side of those, Chris doesn't let a little thing like Covid-19 stop him from hosting this week, dialling in to the podbooth (again, please do forgive the odd attendant audio glitch) to have all kinds of film-related fun with Helen O'Hara and James Dyer. The trio discuss some of the best final films from acting greats, run their eyes over Urchin, Play Dirty, The Smashing Machine, and Him, and find the week's movie news to be so lacking that they wind up doing an impromptu Simpsons quiz. Oh, and James is all giddy this week, after a close encounter with none other than Taylor Swift. To find out how close she came to being on this show, or a Cats retro spoiler special, you're going to have to listen. Enjoy.

We have been saying for some time that this game against the Bruins would be very telling in what to expect from this Northwestern squad this year. While the Cats did play a clean game and many players looked great, there were some major concerns in the strategy and game plan philosophy that we had to get into.
Big news coming out of Cleveland they decide to bench Joe Flaco for rookie QB Dillon Gabriel. How did Aaron Rodgers get himself in the perfect position to win the division? The Cats are back in less than a week! What are they going to look like without Barkov and will they bring him back? Vic Fangio claims that they are doing things to the kicking balls, wasn't there once an old coach to accuse someone of putting helium in his balls. Then we get in our Mixed bag and Erik Spoelstra wants the New Yorkers gone! Napheesa Collier shakes up the WNBA with her exit interview comments about the league commissioner.
It's HUMP DAY and the guys kick things off with America's favorite pastime as the Wildcard gets underway. Tobin shamefully admits he loves him some Mormon Housewives content, and the gang debates whether FSU should be upset about having a Friday game ahead of the big matchup against Miami. Have we watered down the art of rushing the field? Plus, we're thrilled to report that weather reports are officially back at the Windowplex with Leroy. Big news out of Cleveland — the Browns decide to bench Joe Flacco in favor of rookie QB Dillon Gabriel. Meanwhile, how did Aaron Rodgers manage to put himself in the perfect position to win the division? The Cats are back in less than a week — what are they going to look like without Barkov, and will they bring him back in time? Vick Fangio stirs controversy by claiming something's going on with the kicking balls, and the crew remembers the legendary coach who once accused someone of putting helium in the footballs. In our Mixed Bag segment, Erik Spoelstra says he wants the New Yorkers gone, and Napheesa Collier shakes up the WNBA with some blunt exit interview comments about the league commissioner. From Boca Heat training camp, the guys react to news that Terry Rozier is dealing with a hamstring injury, while Barkov is out here hobnobbing with the Heatles. Tobin and Leroy dive into Tyreek Hill's injury and what they expect from Jaylen Waddle in his absence. Spoelstra reveals that Barkov told him he'll only be out 4–5 months — interesting. Then it's time for our favorite Wednesday game: Rats Off a Ship! Is LeBron stirring up drama again? And Tobin gets annoyed that the rest of the crew's rats seem to be on the fence about the Canes blowing out Florida State. News also hits that the Miami Dolphins have officially cut former second-round pick Cam Smith, and the gang reacts to Mike McDaniel's comments on the move. Tobin issues a Minus 1 to the Angels' social team after they post a graphic announcing they're not bringing back Ron Washington — but it looked like he had passed away. We go through the early slate of Wildcard games and give some final thoughts on the Cam Smith decision. Plus, we replay our interview with Bam Adebayo — he gets into not winning DPOY, his frustration, the team's mentality, last season, and what he expects this year. He gives praise to Norman Powell (but not too much), and shares insight on his relationship with Kel'el Ware.

"We are a unique charity, very innovative in this space. What you're really doing is you're inviting people to touch your mission. The number one reason anyone gives to any charity or any cause is to fulfill something within themselves, within their own heart." This episode is sponsored-in-part by Maddie's Fund. In this financial innovation episode, host Stacy LeBaron speaks with Adam Spencer, founder of Furlanthropy, the first charity-owned and operated crowdfunding platform exclusively for animal-related causes. Adam's journey began with his beloved rescue cat Kobe, who lived over 20 years and provided profound emotional support during difficult times. When Adam and his wife later rescued a pet whose original owners had surrendered her due to inability to afford life-saving care, it opened his eyes to the tremendous financial barriers preventing pet parents from accessing veterinary care. As a certified fundraising executive (CFRE), Adam was surprised that no nonprofit crowdfunding platform existed specifically for animal welfare needs. Adam explains how Furlanthropy's nonprofit status provides donor protections unavailable on for-profit platforms like GoFundMe. The platform verifies every campaign and sends funds directly to veterinary hospitals rather than fundraisers, ensuring money reaches its intended destination. With 90 cents of every dollar going directly to campaigns and the remaining 10% supporting administrative costs and underfunded campaigns, Furlanthropy offers transparency that allows donors to research executive compensation through IRS 990 forms. The platform supports immediate campaign creation without waiting periods, accommodates various donation methods including stock gifts and donor-advised funds, and can reimburse past expenses to alleviate financial burdens. The conversation explores fundraising strategy for small grassroots TNR organizations, addressing the common perception that spay/neuter is harder to fundraise for than kitten adoptions. Adam emphasizes that donors give primarily to fulfill something within themselves, often in tribute to their own beloved pets, making prevention-focused campaigns viable when the story connects emotionally. His advice centers on inviting people to become ambassadors for missions they care about, recognizing that not everyone can give financially but everyone can share stories and expand reach through their networks. Press play now for: How Kobe the rescue cat's emotional support inspired a platform serving all animals in need The donor protection advantages of nonprofit vs. for-profit crowdfunding platforms Direct payment to veterinary hospitals ensuring funds reach intended recipients 90/10 fee structure with transparency allowing donor research of executive compensation Immediate campaign launch capability without approval delays or waiting periods Support for past, current, and future expenses to alleviate caregiver financial burdens Stock gifts, donor-advised funds, and multiple donation methods for sophisticated giving PetSmart Charities $200,000+ grant validation and upcoming partnership announcements Strategic fundraising advice for small TNR organizations and grassroots groups Why prevention-focused campaigns succeed when stories connect with donor hearts Ambassador model allowing supporters to create campaigns for causes they care about The power of multiple smaller gifts vs. single large donations for building supporter base Resources mentioned: Furlanthropy website (https://furlanthropy.org/) Furlanthropy Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/furlanthropycharity/) Furlanthropy Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/furlanthropycharity/) Furlanthropy Twitter/X (https://twitter.com/Furlanthropy1) Furlanthropy LinkedIn (https://linkedin.com/company/furlanthropy/) Email contact: paws@furlanthropy.org Phone: (434) 207-2790 PetSmart Charities (https://petsmartcharities.org/) Forever Legacy Society for planned giving (https://furlanthropy.org/ways-to-give/furever-legacy-society/) GuideStar nonprofit profile (https://www.guidestar.org/profile/87-4346748) Sponsor Links: Maddie's Fund (https://www.communitycatspodcast.com/maddies632) Follow & Review We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet. What if America's wilderness hides a predator science won't acknowledge? In this episode of Dark Outdoors®, author Michael Mayes—known for his work Shadow Cats—joins us to dig into the controversial and chilling reports of black panthers roaming across the U.S. For decades, eyewitnesses from Texas to the Appalachians have sworn they've seen something impossible: massive black panthers prowling the woods, stalking farmlands, and vanishing into the shadows. Yet, mainstream science insists such creatures don't exist in North America. In this thought-provoking episode of Dark Outdoors, we sit down with author and researcher Michael Mayes to explore the mystery at the heart of his book Shadow Cats. Together, we examine chilling accounts, folklore, and the deep cultural roots of black panther sightings. Are these elusive predators a product of myth, mass misidentification, or could there be something truly hidden in America's wild places? Expect a conversation that pushes beyond campfire tales—diving into history, biology, and the unsettling implications of predators that may walk unseen. Whether you're a skeptic or a believer, this is one episode that will make you think twice the next time you walk into the woods after dark. Are they black mountain lions - black cougars? Are they black jaguars? Are they jaguarundi? Are they escaped exotics? What about the mysterious black longtail? Take a deep dive on black panthers with us.

What happens when we face the hard reality of childhood obesity with solutions-focused honesty, grace, and hope? In this episode, Nutritional Therapy and Wellness Podcast host, Jamie Belz, jumps into the passenger seat and releases the reins as a guest on The Liberty Wellness Podcast, hosted by Rebecca Stewart. Rebecca is a National Board-Certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (NTP), a homeschool mama of two, and the founder of Liberty Wellness & Co.—a virtual practice supporting clients through complex chronic illnesses like Lyme disease, Hashimoto's, and autoimmune conditions. She's also the creator of the Liberty Wellness Homeschool High School Health Curriculum, giving families a solid foundation for health education at home. Her heart for parents, children, and future generations shines through every word. After listening to Episode 35 of the Nutritional Therapy and Wellness Podcast, Rebecca invited Jamie to be a guest on her platform for a real conversation to help parents and kids understand: The biology behind childhood obesity - why it's not just “baby fat” and how early patterns set lifelong health trajectories. Parental guilt, shame, and fear—how to forgive ourselves and look forward with positivity as we help heal our families. The impact of sugar, dopamine hits, screen time, and nutrient-deficient foods on kids' developing bodies. Why bio-individuality matters: every child is unique, and healing isn't one-size-fits-all. Generational cycles of health decline, including the eye-opening research of Dr. Francis Pottenger and the warnings of Dr. Weston A. Price nearly a century ago. How simple, doable changes—nutrient-dense meals, family modeling, stress reduction, and connection—can rewrite the story for our kids and grandkids. The powerful reminder that it's never too late to shift course, heal, and create meaningful change, redemption, and hope for healthier generations. Patrick Mahomes was as great as he ever was Sunday as Xavier Worthy returned to action. The Chiefs never looked better. Now, the Ravens defense may give the Cowboys a run for worst in the NFL but that doesn't matter right now. The Chiefs have erased their 0-2 start with a pair of season saving wins and may have just flipped the bird to the world that had them dead and buried. Lamar Jackson turned it over twice and wound up on the bench with a hammy strain, I'd say the defense did its job brilliantly. Meanwhile, the Chargers lose and KC is now only one back in the division. We recap a wild college football Saturday that saw Kansas State completely change its offensive scheme in an easy win over UCF. KU is so easy to watch and Jalon Daniels was brilliant but Cincinnati took advantage of a KU defense that's acting like it wants to be the worst in the Big 12. Beau Pribula sets a record in Columbia for the Tigers in a win over UMASS. The Ryder Cup turned into a crap show this weekend, boy do I have some grievances. Chase Elliott wins a double overtime thriller at Kansas Speedway and I"m here to save you some money today if you'd like a cup of coffee.
