In the final episode of the ESRI-presented podcast series about capturing GIS information more effectively, the esteemed Pat Hohl and Bill Meehan move past the typical association of GIS with maps and move into what they believe serves a larger purpose in the realm of discovery and understanding complex data, especially within the utility sector. Pat and Bill discuss transitioning from paper to digital maps in this conversation and how utilities move towards fully connected, intelligent models for better interoperability and load flow management. The role of mobile tools and web services will serve to reduce data latency and increase transparency, with an emphasis on safety and operational efficiency. Specifically, Digital Twins combine multiple data sources like imagery, real-time sensor data, and logical representations for more informed decision-making, and this episode serves as a starting point for understanding how GIS acts as a foundation for these technologies. Our focus for this episode is the real utility of financial advisors, and Ben shares a host of research and findings about the supposed and actual value that advisors can offer investors. This segment continues our exploration of investment basics, a fundamental theme for this show and our work at PWL Capital. One of the biggest and clearest lessons that becomes apparent through this discussion is the need for financial literacy independent of advice and so-called expertise from the outside. With that said, we do find time to share some of the positives investors can accrue from dealing with a trustworthy advisor and the conditions necessary for this. Later in the episode, our colleague Lukas Fleck joins us to share his review of The Obstacle Is the Way by Ryan Holiday and some of his own reading habits and tips. We finish the episode with lighter content about hot sauces, TV shows, and Ben's latest home improvement. Today we are spending most of the episode going further into the basic concepts that ground good financial practices and the personal finance topics that are often taken for granted. The three main areas we unpack in this episode are the cost of living, savings capacity, and emergency funds, and though these can be viewed as basic ideas, there are always areas of the simplest variety that deserve more attention. Listeners can also expect to hear a little more about what our role as financial advisors constitutes on a daily basis, as we respond to an audience member's question about how to conceptualize the profession. We welcome Dr. Wendall Mascarenhas back to the show for a brief cameo in which he shares his reading habits and approach with us, which contrasts with some of the opinions often expressed by other guests, so make sure to stay tuned in for that. We also find time for a quick recap of an old episode we had with Rick Ferri and a book review of Rethink Lead Generation by Tom Shapiro. The debate surrounding Parkfield school in Birmingham and wider discussion on the role of sex and relationship classes within educational programmes, are just the latest incidences of schools becoming a battlefield for the culture wars. Starting with developments in the 1870s when the state intervention in schooling in England & Wales became more pronounced, James Tooley explores the impact of the ethos of state control over education right up to today’s controversies over Relationship and Sex EducationLecturer James Tooley, professor of educational entrepreneurship and policy, University of Buckingham; author, The Beautiful TreeTalking Points in this podcastIn the 1870s, private non-profit and private for-profit schools made up nearly all the educational establishments, educating 95 per cent of children.State intervention in education reflected a desire to push forward a particular set of values, creating an early instance of the education culture wars.Schools were used to also keep the working class in their own station as opposed to increasing their social mobility. An affordable grassroots private school movement that would create schools of high quality at half the cost of state education is possible.BibliographyThe Beautiful Tree: a personal journey into how the world’s poorest people are educating themselves, James Tooley, Cato Institute, 2013Education and the State: A Study in Political Economy, Edwin G West, 3rd revised edition, 1994THE ACADEMY 2019In the context of today’s instrumental approaches to knowledge, The Academy summer school is a modest attempt to demonstrate the value of scholarship, and of the worth of the university as a place of free enquiry dedicated to the pursuit of truth.IDEAS MATTER PODCASTIdeas Matter is a podcast that takes the most important issues of our times and explores the ideas and intellectual trends that have shaped where we are today. You can subscribe and listen to Ideas Matter on iTunes, Podbean or SoundCloud. In deze aflevering: kunstmatige intelligentie, glasvezel-goudkoorts en groei in clouddiensten. Kunstmatige intelligentie: slim of juist heel dom?

Welcome to a New Year and a new episode of Low Carb Conversations! Leah is joined by her new Guest Co-Host Marty Kendall from Optimizing Nutrition. Get to know Marty a little more! He will be joining Low Carb Conversations for a few episodes in January. Sit back, relax and enjoy this week’s episode! Our Guests this week on Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson NTP and Guests are Husband and Wife Gary and Belinda Fettke. Gary Fettke is an Australian orthopaedic surgeon, low carb, healthy fat advocate and you might recall he was the Doctor reprimanded by medical watchdog AHPRA (which is the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) for suggesting his patients eat low-carb diets and AHPRA said he was not qualified to give nutritional advice. His wife, Belinda Fettke, also a low carb healthy fat advocate took over their website No Fructose and social media accounts to keep the low carb healthy fat message alive. Listen in as Gary and Belinda share their story. BMI is underestimating obesity in Australia, waist circumference needs to be measured too Study: Poor People Eating Properly would Accelerate Global Warming First up is an article around Body Mass Index (BMI) and whether we are underestimating the prevalence of obesity in the Australian population by using BMI as the measurement and that waistlines of Australian adults are increasing faster than body weight. Why is BMI not accurate and should be measuring waist circumference or something else? The second article is around a study that claims if poor people were to eat real food then it would accelerate climate change. Listen to the Fettke's response on this! In the article Belinda and Gary quote article where Paul Behrens is quoted as saying: “Of all the foods, beef has the biggest impact on global warming. Raising cows for beef demands 28 times more land, 11 times more water, and five times more greenhouse gases than other animal-based foods like chicken, pork, and dairy. Fertilizer and cow dung also run into rivers and cause toxic algal blooms that kill plants and fish” Behrens says. Plus, “cattle have this digestion process in their stomachs that releases a lot of methane, which is a very powerful greenhouse gas,” he adds. Yes, cow farts contribute to climate change. https://www.vice.com/en_id/article/8xmqpb/people-who-eat-healthy-are-also-doing-the-planet-a-big-favor And remember our secret health headline! "Beer is the beverage of community," says Sean Lilly Wilson, a brewer who played a role in changes that brought exponential growth in the number of breweries in his state -- with happy extras for their surroundings. On this episode -- recorded live from CityVision 2017 -- we hear Sean discuss how breweries have played major roles in downtown and warehouse-district revitalizations and re-energized the local sense of community. Good beer is economic development, hometown pride, craftsmanship and more, he says, and the brewers making it aren't known to hold back on civic involvement, either. Oh, and who's that other guy we're hearing, here? Is that .... Sinbad? The inaugural Reith Lecturer is the philosopher, mathematician, and social reformer Bertrand Russell. One of the founders of analytic philosophy and a Nobel Laureate, he is the author of Principia Mathematica, and the bestselling History of Western Philosophy, written in 1946. His Reith lecture series is entitled 'Authority and the Individual'. In his third lecture, entitled 'The Role of Individuality', he considers the importance of individual initiative to a community, and argues for flexibility, local autonomy, and less centralisation in society. Modern organisations, he says, must be more flexible and less oppressive to the human spirit if life is to be saved from boredom.
