What makes someone a monster: what they are, or the choices they make? In this episode of Between The Lines, we're joined by debut author Lily Crozier on the publication day of her gothic vampire romance, Vow of Eternal Night. The novel follows Clara Wagner, a young woman who has always known monsters are real. When she is abducted by the feared vampire Prince Rayleigh and forced into a betrothal, Clara is given an impossible choice: break his curse before the end of the year or become his bride for eternity. Lily shares how she set out to write the vampire romance she wanted to read, filled with dangerous vampires, gothic castles, sweeping romance and atmospheric historical detail. But beneath the irresistible fantasy premise is a story about identity, autonomy and the choices people make when they hold power. We discuss why the true monsters in the story are not always the vampires, and how human greed and cruelty can be far more frightening than anything supernatural. Lily also explains why it was important for Clara to remain an individual within the romance, and for Clara and Rayleigh's relationship to be built between two equals rather than one person losing themselves in the other. In this episode, we discuss: Writing an atmospheric vampire romance with gothic, old-world influences The vampire folklore of Austria, Germany and Hungary Why Lily wrote the book she desperately wanted to read The difference between being seen as a monster and choosing to behave monstrously Power, trauma and personal responsibility Clara's journey towards self-identity and autonomy Creating a romance between two equal, fully realised individuals Why the book may appeal to readers who grew up loving Twilight but now want something richer and more empowering Lily's journey from unfinished manuscripts to publishing her debut novel Vow of Eternal Night delivers the addictive pull and romantic tension readers love in vampire fiction, while offering a thoughtful exploration of identity, equality and what truly defines a person.

The world of fanfiction has changed a lot since our 2017 episode, Fanfiction (Don't Judge.) At the time, I thought that 50 Shades of Gray – the novel that began as Twilight fanfiction – was a fluke. It turned out to be a harbinger of a controversial fanfiction-to-media pipeline. I talk with Elizabeth Minkel, editor of the site Fansplaining, about how a financial motivation has altered the way fanfiction writers tell stories and the characters from pop culture they choose to focus on. We also discuss how the conversations around representation in fanfiction have become more complicated over the past decade. This episode was inspired by an episode of The Allusionist podcast. If you like this episode, you should check out our interview with Archive of Our Own co-founder Francesca Coppa and our episode Swept Away by Romantasy, which looks at how the blending of romance and fantasy took over the publishing industry. It's an excellent summer read and is just in time for all of the current discussion about Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" since Jan was inspired by epic tales like "The Odyssey" when crafting her narrative. The story centers on an aunt and her niece deciding to swim across the Hudson River from Fort Lee to Manhattan, and along the way they encounter mythical beings and learn major life lessons! It was also so wonderful to be joined with Jan's childhood friend and illustrator of her novella, Robin Lehovitis! On this episode of Random Encounter, we poke Nintendo's lawyers with a stick. They don't notice.First up, we are exploring the latest entry in a long-running series of RPG-esque board games, Culdcept Begins! This soft reboot of the series features a new graphical style and streamlined gameplay. But does its Monopoly-meets-Magic: The Gathering-style gameplay hit the board game nostalgic spot for Ben?Then, Aleks is here to chat about Dusklight, a native PC port of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Obviously, this was not published by Nintendo, but as usual, fans do what Nintendon't. How are they getting away with it? It is just a launcher. You need your own original game discs in order to play the game! The Outer Realm welcomes back special Guest Daniela Simina Date: July 23, 2026 EP: 749 DISCUSSION: Forging Deeper Connections &Understanding The Parallels Of Irish & Romanian Fairies. Daniela will be talking about her book Where Fairies Meet. We will discuss the parallelism between the ever evolving Irish and Romanian Fairy traditions, lore, and can we forge connections with those from the OTHER Realms, and perhaps co exist as our Ancestors did. Contact for the show - theouterrealmcontact@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/michelledesrochers_ About Daniela: Daniela Simina, granddaughter of a folk medicine woman and fairy seer, grew up in Romania, immersed in the rich local fairy traditions. Those early years have imprinted her beliefs and later work. In addition to researching and publishing, Daniela Simina teaches classes on energetic rebalancing and esoteric subjects related to folk magic and fairies - the heart of both her personal and professional paths. Daniela Simina is the author Where Fairies Meet: Parallels Between Irish and Romanian Fairy Traditions, A Fairy Path: The Memoir of a Young Fairy Seer in Training, and Fairy Herbs for Fairy Magic: A Practical Guide to Fairy HerbalMagic Daniela Simina Bioenergetic Balance, Plant Energy Medicine& Spiritual Herbalism, Reiki, Yoga. As such, fairy traditions allow people to position themselves on the time-space continuum, not only through perpetuation of values but also through connecting deeper with the subtler realms that surround and interpenetrate consensus reality. Connecting to subtler realms gives access to a body of knowledge built upon the record of interaction between our world and the Other. In Ireland and Romania, fairy traditions are alive and evolving. The study of the parallelism that exists between bodies of lore, past and present, from areas diametrically opposed on the map of Europe, gives scholars, lay people, and spiritual seekers access to an everlasting repository of wisdom. With a glance at her lengthy filmography, you'd never know that Australian filmmaker Alice Maio Mackay is barely in her twenties. THE SERPENT'S SKIN (now available on digital and Blu-Ray) is her sixth feature. And while her work is generally categorized as horror or fantasy, the undercurrent of romance there is a tell for the romantic saga that made her feel seen: TWILIGHT (the books, the movies, the whole series). So which Bella is she? And how has she made so many movies already? Jordan asks all this and more... We officially welcome Kye into our DWAM family this week when we eat mushroom ravioli and salad before discussing Twilight (2008). This fantastical world of awkward and perpetually pubescent vegetarian vampires is a beloved story for many teens. The film lacks a clear antagonist at the beginning of the movie and has campy scenes of Bella on Edward's back running through the forest like Yoda and Luke that are laughable. Most of the questions we had about the story are answered in the book, so read the book first. In all, the film's focus on family is done well. No matter if it's through blood or chosen, family is a fundamental part of love.

Ill Will Hunting Matt Damon has trouble finding a way home after winning the Trojan War with a duplicitous offering to Athena (Zendaya) in Christopher Nolan's epic re-telling of The Odyssey. Is there something more than the giant cyclops, spellcasting witch, Charlize Theron's lotus flower diet, or the ghost of fallen soldier Elliot Page that prevents this Ithacan King from reclaiming his throne? And how pissed will son Tom Holland be if mom Anne Hathaway reads Twilight instead of Homer, and marries Robert Pattinson? Find Out Now!

Grab your popcorn and your feelings, because this week we're diving headfirst into the YA romance takeover happening on your TV right now. We're joined by Christine Riccio (author of 'Thirty, Flirty, and Forever Alone' and 'Attached at the Hip', host of Those Forking Fangirls podcast) to talk through whether we're actually living in a golden age of YA romance television, or if it just feels that way because Netflix and Amazon can't stop greenlighting shows built for people who grew up on The CW and obsessed over the Twilight saga. We get into what's different about the hype around shows like Off Campus, Heated Rivalry, and The Summer I Turned Pretty, how much of this we can credit to BookTok (and social media more broadly), and whether virality now matters more than a built-in fanbase ever did. Christine also brings her perspective as a published romance author to weigh in on how this boom is rippling into publishing. Plus: why does it seem like contemporary romance is winning while sci-fi and fantasy YA (RIP Vampire Academy and First Kill) can't get a second season? We break down what we think is really going on, and what we'd love to see more of on screen. Dreamlike and surreal, it may not be as well remembered as some of the other 1980s picture books that typify the era (particularly those written by Chris Van Allsburg) but there's something luminous about this cult classic picture book. Will Kate be drawn to its gentle peculiarities or dislike them entirely? We talk about how gutsy it is to do three wordless two-page spreads, murder hornets, and what Berger owes to Magritte. On our show, "Howling At The Full Moon" which celebrates anything related to Charles Bands Empire of Full Moon Pictures, we're going way back to the Twilight sub-label of erotica days in our 45th episode with the sci-fi softcore romp "FORBIDDEN ZONE: ALIEN ABDUCTION" from 1996. Directed by Lucien S. Diamonde and starring Darcy DeMoss. This loosely made science-fiction tale of an alien scientist's sexy experiments on three beautiful women released at the height of 1990's Skinemax. We are currently surviving, not thriving, before we dive into Sarah J Maas' House of Flame and Shadow. This means we're discussing other book-ish topics while we prepare our analysis, and discuss topics that bring us joy. And today, that's Vamprism in the Romance genre. From Gothic villain to swoon-worthy love interest, this episode traces the vampire's transformation across literary history. We start with the folkloric roots of the vampire myth, move through Polidori's The Vampyre and Stoker's Dracula (where the vampire is pure threat, tangled up with anxieties about sexuality and contagion), and track how the genre slowly reimagines the vampire as a figure of desire rather than dread — through Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire and the rise of paranormal romance in the '90s and 2000s. We close on Twilight, looking at how Meyer's Edward Cullen crystallizes the "dangerous but devoted" vampire archetype for a new generation, and what that shift says about what readers want from a monster turned love interest. It also contains an extended discussion of traditional Japanese supernatural folklore. Listener discretion is strongly advised.Welcome back to Stories Fables Ghostly Tales. Tonight, we present The Reeds of Twilight: The North Kanto Serial Child Murders — Japan, 1979–1996.Along the gravel bars and misty lowlands of the Watarase River valley, there is a weight that standard criminology cannot seem to lift. We step into the dense river fog of the North Kanto plain to dissect a harrowing cross-prefectural mystery, a devastating failure of justice, and the ancient folklore that steps in when the living choose silence.

It's the Fourth of July Eve Eve show and we're getting you ready for the long weekend. We start with Three Things: UDOT road closures and holiday travel tips (61.4 million Americans are expected to drive this weekend), the Twilight baggage drop update, and the heartwarming story of Golden Healers' therapy dogs visiting ash-covered firefighters battling Utah's Iron and Cherry fires. From there — the perfect American hot dog, where you CAN legally set off fireworks (hello, Bonneville Salt Flats), 10 items banned from national parks, and a real talk on fireworks safety. Then we get into the wild stuff: people are literally going to therapy because AI broke their brains. We price out how much it would cost for Caitlyn to get to NYC for Taylor Swift’s wedding. We wrap with the America 250 list as the country turns 250 on Saturday. (Part 3) Join me as we continue our newest book reading for Adult Brain...it's a short one made up of many very short ones...the poet WB Yeats recounts tales he was told in Ireland about faeries and ghosts, and it seems he believes them because he himself was a ceremonial magician and a leader in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn! The tales may not be true, but they are a delightful read & a journey back in time to old Ireland. Step into the legend-haunted world of ancient Ireland as we begin our reading of The Celtic Twilight: Myth, Fantasy and Folklore by W. B. Yeats. Part memoir, part folklore collection, and part spiritual exploration, The Celtic Twilight captures Yeats's encounters with storytellers, mystics, country folk, and the lingering presence of Ireland's old traditions at the turn of the twentieth century. Within these pages, the boundary between the natural and supernatural grows thin, revealing a world inhabited by fairies, spirits, omens, dreams, and mysteries that refuse to yield to the certainties of modern rationalism. Drawing from conversations, local legends, and firsthand experiences, Yeats preserves a fading folk tradition while inviting readers into a landscape where myth and reality coexist. His reflections offer a rare glimpse into the beliefs, customs, and imagination of a people for whom the unseen world was never far away. Whether you're interested in Celtic mythology, folklore, mysticism, literature, or the rich cultural heritage of Ireland, join us as we begin this timeless journey into the twilight realm between imagination and reality.
