13Havia três portas do lado do oriente, três portas do lado norte, três portas do lado sul e três portas do lado do ocidente. – Palavra do Senhor. Salmo Responsorial: 144(145) Ó Senhor, vossos amigos anunciem vosso Reino glorioso! 1. / Narrem a glória e o esplendor do vosso reino / e saibam proclamar vosso poder! – R. 2.

Monday's are generally regarded as the easiest of the New York Times crosswords, but that doesn't mean that they aren't a lot of fun. This one had a lively theme, the opportunity to misspell 14A, Visually challenged "Mr." of cartoons, MAGOO (Mike thought it was MCGOO for a time), and a clue that's guaranteed to induce a chuckle or three,  45A, One who says that you're not on the ball?, FLATEARTHER. In short, Freddie Cheng has set the bar high for crosswords for the rest of the week, which we'll be reporting on ... for the rest of the week.

GOSPEL POWER l AUGUST 7, 2021 18th Week in Ordinary Time Mt 17:14-20 14A man came to Jesus, knelt before him, 15and said, “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; he often falls into the fire and often into the water. 16And I brought him to your disciples, but they could not cure him.” 17Jesus answered, “You faithless and perverse generation, how much longer must I be with you? How much longer must I put up with you? Bring him here to me.” 18And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly. 19Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” 20He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” Before Jesus sends his apostles as his representatives in Mt 10:1, he gives them authority to drive out unclean spirits. Thus, the apostles' power-over-demons does not emanate from themselves. It is delegated power, and to activate it, they must stay connected with Jesus. This is the sense of performing powerful deeds in the name of Jesus. Knowing the apostles' obsession with greatness (cf. Mt 18:1-5; 20:20-28), we can surmise that in today's Gospel, when asked to exorcise the lunatic boy, their enthusiasm to show what they could do, made them overlook the most important thing — that is, to invoke the name of Jesus, the source of their authority. The faith that Jesus speaks of entails constant, unbroken connection with him and reliance on him. Lord Jesus, keep us constantly aware that, like branches on the vine, we can bear fruit only because of our vital connection with you. Amen.

A challenging Saturday (of course!) crossword, with some major obscurisms lurking in the grid. Certainly 29D, Happenstance, cutely, COINKYDINK, and 20A, Hallux, less formally, BIGTOE, qualify, as, at least for Jean & Mike, does 1A, Popular brand of alcoholic seltzer, WHITECLAW. Other clues were just deliciously deceptive, such as 14A, One might be off the hook, HOMEPHONE, 30D, Record producer?, NOTETAKER, and 36D, Airdrops?, MIST.  A good 'un, we give it a 4.5 squares on the JAMCR scale.

– Palavra do Senhor. Salmo Responsorial: 90(91) Vós sois meu Deus, no qual confio inteiramente. 1. Quem habita ao abrigo do Altíssimo / e vive à sombra do Senhor onipotente, / diz ao Senhor: “Sois meu refúgio e proteção, / sois o meu Deus, no qual confio inteiramente”. – R. 2. Do caçador e do seu laço ele te livra. / Ele te salva da palavra que destrói. / Com suas asas haverá de proteger-te, / com seu escudo e suas armas, defender-te. – R. 3. “Porque a mim se confiou, hei de livrá-lo / e protegê-lo, pois meu nome ele conhece. / Ao invocar-me, hei de ouvi-lo e atendê-lo, / e a seu lado eu estarei em suas dores”. – R. Evangelho: Mateus 9,18-26 Aleluia, aleluia, aleluia. A tua fé te salvou”. E a mulher ficou curada a partir daquele instante. E começaram a caçoar dele.

I have been with you wherever you went, and I have destroyed all your enemies before you. And I will make you famous like the great ones of the earth. I will fix a place for my people Israel; I will plant them so that they may dwell in their place without further disturbance. Neither shall the wicked continue to afflict them as they did of old, since the time I first appointed judges over my people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies. The LORD also reveals to you that he will establish a house for you. And when your time comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins, and I will make his kingdom firm. I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before me; your throne shall stand firm forever.'”Reading 2 ROM 16:25-27 Brothers and sisters: To him who can strengthen you, according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery kept secret for long ages but now manifested through the prophetic writings and, according to the command of the eternal God, made known to all nations to bring about the obedience of faith, to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ be glory forever and ever. Amen.Gospel LK 1:26-38 The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.” But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. “Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” And the angel said to her in reply, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God.” Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

Don't miss the conclusion of our three-part conversation with our guest for Episode 14, D-Day Veteran Bill Parker. Part of the 116th Regiment, 29th Division, Mr. Parker landed with the first wave on Omaha Beach, D-Day, June 6, 1944. He was possibly the first Allied soldier to set foot on Omaha Beach. Although there is no way to historically verify who took the first step on Omaha Beach, Mr. Parker was definitely among the earliest men to land on that fateful day. Part of a wire-breaching team, he was the first man to step into the water when the ramp dropped on his Higgins boat. When asked why he believes he could be the first man to land on Omaha Beach, he says very candidly, ‘because there were no other people or bodies on the beach in front of us.’ As Mr. Parker and four other men (his wire breaching team) stepped off the Higgins Boat, an artillery round struck the boat, killing the remaining 33 men onboard. Mr. Parker takes us through his harrowing ordeal on Omaha Beach that day, as his team breached wire obstacles using Bangalore torpedoes, then eventually assaulted a pill box along the bluff, expending all of their ammunition as a result. Within a matter of days, Mr. Parker was promoted from private to staff sergeant, due to heavy losses sustained in his company. He led a squad through the hedgerows, conducting attack-after-attack. Following the breakout, Mr. Parker continued fighting throughout Europe, liberating town-after-town, and eventually reaching the Elbe River. He actually crossed the Elbe to retrieve one of his soldiers, and spent some time with the Russians as a result. Today, Mr. Parker resides in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he has lived for the majority of his life. Episode 14 will consist of three parts. 14A focuses on Mr. Parker’s upbringing, Army training, and travel to Europe. 14B focuses on D-Day, Normandy, and his incredible journey through Europe to the Elbe River. 14C concludes Mr. Parkers military service, then discusses his life after the military, as well as several life lessons that he details for all of us.Thank you, Shreyas Ganesh, for donating your time as sound engineer for this podcast.

13Havia três portas do lado do oriente, três portas do lado norte, três portas do lado sul e três portas do lado do ocidente. - Palavra do Senhor. - Graças a Deus. Salmo Responsorial (Sl 144) — Ó Senhor, vossos amigos anunciem vosso Reino glorioso! — Ó Senhor, vossos amigos anunciem vosso Reino glorioso! Narrem a glória e o esplendor do vosso reino e saibam proclamar vosso poder! Evangelho (Jo 1,45-51) — O Senhor esteja convosco. — Ele está no meio de nós. — PROCLAMAÇÃO do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo + segundo João. — Glória a vós, Senhor. — Glória a vós, Senhor. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/cassiordl/message

Alleluia JN 10:14 R. Alleluia, alleluia.I am the good shepherd, says the Lord;I know my sheep, and mine know me.R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel JN 10:1-10 Jesus said:“Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever does not enter a sheepfold through the gatebut climbs over elsewhere is a thief and a robber. But whoever enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice,as the shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has driven out all his own,he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice. But they will not follow a stranger;they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers.”Although Jesus used this figure of speech, the Pharisees did not realize what he was trying to tell them. So Jesus said again, “Amen, amen, I say to you,I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.I am the gate.Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy;I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.”

He is the one of whom I said, ‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.’ I did not know him, but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel.” John testified further, saying, “I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from heaven and remain upon him. Susan Carey - My 21st birthday was at one of my infusions! Topics discussed in this episode:First experiencing double vision. Seeing two golf balls and two basketballs, the optometrist asked her to leave the room while her mum was told there was something in the back of her eye. she could have a tumor or multiple sclerosis.    Being officially diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis - a degenerative health condition at 14A lumbar puncture done by a medical student. (A lumbar puncture is a common test done to diagnose Multiple Sclerosis. It involves extracting some Cerebral Spinal Fluid from between the discs in the spine and testing it) The people in Susan's Irish village sent her Rosary beads, jumpers and mass cards through the post, was this right to send to a 14 year old diagnosed with MS? She was convinced she was going to die! Treatments and Multiple Sclerosis. We discussed the MS drug Avonex and Susan's experience with the injectable drug. She was so terrified that her Father kindly stepped in to help her with it. After this she went onto Tysabri* (natalizumab) and then Lemtrada* (alemtuzumab) - both infusion treatments which means you need to stay in hospital or a few days. With Lemtrada you also need a few days of taking oral steroids before starting the infusion. Susan was told there was not a lot of research done around Lemtrada at the time. The nurse also didn't know what it meant for fertility something which Susan hadn't even thought about yet. She was told to go away and Google it, research everything about it that she could find and come to a decision on her own. Susan tells us about how she spent her 21st birthday in hospital doing an infusion and the doctors and nurses left balloons, cake and gave presents which made it far easier for her to deal with. Focussing on what you can do. Every day with her dad Susan would walk the length of the small pier in her hometown. She managed to do this after the Lemtrada treatment without holding on to anything. While she was in hospital, Susan decided she would not miss out on any of her diet or training programme so she packed herself some meals to have in the hospital and made a gym out of what she could find around the ward, like the stairs. Living through your teenage years without being able to do the things you absolutely lived for. Turning the hospital into a gym so she could keep up her fitness routine - even whilst being attached to an IV drip! Planning and prepping her own meals to take into hospital. There is no limitations around you, you can always work around things. Starting her own fitness coaching business after feeling unfulfilled in life called ‘fit fusion' an inclusive disability fitness program. When the people in your life are supposed to be supportive but just make you feel inferior when you can't do what they want you to do.  A shift.MS takeover made her realise what the hardest part of her illness - family and friends' unhelpful comments, suggestions and advice.  Best advice for coping with Multiple Sclerosis? Suan says to network online with people already talking about their experiences. *Tysabri is an intravenous infusion (drip) once every four weeks to reduce the number and severity of relapses. It reduces the number of relapses by about two thirds (70%), compared to taking placebo.Common side effects include dizziness, nausea, urticaria (a skin rash) and shivering.Treatment with Tysabri may increase the risk of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), an uncommon brain infection that can lead to severe disability or even death.(source: https://www.mstrust.org.uk/a-z/tysabri-natalizumab) *Lemtrada is a disease modifying drug (DMD) for active relapsing remitting MS and very active relapsing remitting MS.You take Lemtrada as an intravenous infusion (drip) in two treatment courses, twelve months apart. It reduces the number of relapses by about two thirds (70%), compared to taking placebo.Common side effects include infusion-related reactions w

In this episode, I answer the question: Does the state or federal government have the right to decide who can and who cannot own a gun? Many don't know that the 2nd Amendment isn't the only provision of the Constitution that protects gun rights. The 14th Amendment is also an important bulwark against gun control. To be legitimate, any gun control measure must pass muster with the 14th Amendment's due process clause. In this episode we'll look at the original debates on the 14th, what the Supreme Court has ruled, and what President Trump can actually do about it. Reading 1 IS 49:3, 5-6 The LORD said to me: You are my servant, Israel, through whom I show my glory. Now the LORD has spoken who formed me as his servant from the womb, that Jacob may be brought back to him and Israel gathered to him; and I am made glorious in the sight of the LORD, and my God is now my strength! It is too little, the LORD says, for you to be my servant, to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and restore the survivors of Israel; I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth. Responsorial PsalmPS 40:2, 4, 7-8, 8-9, 10 R. (8a and 9a) Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will. I have waited, waited for the LORD, and he stooped toward me and heard my cry. And he put a new song into my mouth, a hymn to our God. R. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will. Sacrifice or offering you wished not, but ears open to obedience you gave me. Holocausts or sin-offerings you sought not; then said I, "Behold I come." R. Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. "In the written scroll it is prescribed for me, to do your will, O my God, is my delight, and your law is within my heart!" R. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will. I announced your justice in the vast assembly; I did not restrain my lips, as you, O LORD, know. R. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will. Reading 2 1 COR 1:1-3 Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, to the church of God that is in Corinth, to you who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be holy, with all those everywhere who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia JN 1:14A, 12A R. Alleluia, alleluia. The Word of God became flesh and dwelt among us. To those who accepted him, he gave power to become children of God. R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel JN 1:29-34 John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. He is the one of whom I said, 'A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.' I did not know him, but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel." John testified further, saying, "I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from heaven and remain upon him. I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God."
