#216: Tina Owens, senior advisor to the Nutrient Density Alliance, joins Dave to discuss how the future of nutrient density testing could be the key to transforming our food system. With years of experience representing major food companies like Kellogg's and Danone, and a family background in farming, Tina unpacks the science behind “nutritional dark matter,” the power of soil health, and why real organic and real regenerative practices matter more than ever—for farmers, eaters, and the planet. Tina Owens co-founded the Nutrient Density Alliance, where she continues to serve as a senior advisor. In addition to her work with big brands like Kellogg's/ Kashi and Danone, she has held board positions at Mad Agriculture and The Non-GMO Project.https://www.nutrientdensityalliance.org/aboutTo watch a video version of this podcast with access to the full transcript and links relevant to our conversation, please visit:https://realorganicproject.org/tina-owens-nutritional-dark-matter-216The Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/directoryWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000 Real Friends:https://www.realorganicproject.org/real-organic-friends/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/Are you an organic farmer looking to communicate the premium quality of your milk, meat, fruits, veggies, or CSA shares to shoppers? Through our no-cost, add-on certification to USDA certified-organic, Real Organic Project aims to bring organic back to its high-integrity roots, prioritizing healthy soil, humane treatment of animals, labor protections and a more regionally based agriculture for community well-being. This week in the kitchen I am joined by Co-Founder of Bio&Me Jon Walsh. Bio&Me is dedicated to promoting gut health and believes in the importance of dietary diversity. From granolas to porridge pots, their goal is to incorporate a wide variety of plants into every product. Founded by Jon Walsh and Dr. Megan Rossi, Bio&Me boasts a formidable team. With Jon's extensive experience in the food industry, having worked with renowned brands like Nestle, Procter and Gamble, and John West, coupled with Dr. Megan's background in science and nutrition, they possess the ideal skillset to revolutionize the market and raise awareness about the significance of gut health.Recently, there has been increasing attention on gut health, which is fantastic considering its crucial role in overall well-being. Some even liken the gut to a "second brain" due to its influence on various aspects of our functioning and emotions. However, Bio&Me has been advocating for this long before it became a trend. Therefore, I wanted to speak with Jon about the journey of Bio&Me, its origins, and whether the heightened awareness of gut health is positively or negatively impacting the industry. What's particularly refreshing about Jon's perspective is that he doesn't come from a scientific or nutritional background. Instead, he discusses gut health in straightforward terms, avoiding complex health terminology that can often be confusing and overwhelming. This episode is a fantastic way of understanding ways in which you can support your gut health as well as understanding why it is important that we all do so.The topics we covered were...Why is Gut Health so important What are the affects of bad Gut Health Why did you start Bio&Me How did you bring Bio&Me to life What is your role in Bio&Me and how does it differ to Dr Megans role? What is added to Bio&Me that makes it so different to other brands on the market What is the difference between Probiotic and PrebioticA lot of brands claim to have gut health benefits when they don't - how can they do this? How can consumers really tell if a product is going to be beneficial to their gut health How has the journey been bringing Bio&Me to lifeDid you have to educate consumers when you startedBiggest challenges you faced as a business What's next for Bio&Me/ any NPD you can talk aboutTo check out Bio&Me and the products that they offer click hereSponsors:PARLA - Order your sustainable oral care - Here GEORGIASYMONDS for 10% off your orderGeorgia's Instagram - click here! This episode was hosted and produced by Georgia Symonds Hosted on Acast. Prepare for a fascinating exploration of the unsung urban ecosystems with author Peter Alagona. We'll navigate the intricate ecological and historical facets of his book Accidental Ecosystems, tracing the evolution of urban parks, the impact of climate change on human-wildlife interactions, and the implications of zoonotics. Venturing into the green realm of urban parks, we'll examine their metamorphosis from pastoral to forest-like settings. Together, we'll unravel Central Park's genesis and the often misconstrued concept of wilderness, while casting a critical eye on the North American Model's approach to wildlife management. At the end of our conversation we get into the pressing concern of biological diversity loss and its far-reaching implications. 100Kin10 has taken up the bold goal of ending the STEM teacher shortage in the U.S. What started as a call to action from President Obama in 2011 has become a vast national network of educators, employers and nonprofits who are collaborating, innovating and sharing the resources that prepared over 100,000 STEM teachers in the last 10 years. In 2011, President Obama made a call for the U.S. to prepare 100,000 excellent STEM teaches in 10 years. At the time, the word "STEM" was not yet the common term it is today. The U.S. was behind globally in STEM programming and education. This presidential call was an important goal that would have long-term ripple effects in both education and the future workforce. After hearing the call, Talia Milgrom-Elcott took up President Obama's challenge. She launched 100Kin10, a national nonprofit dedicated to creating a network of collaborators and resources that would enable 100,000 STEM teachers to be trained by 2021. In the end, they surpassed their goal with over 108,000 STEM teachers prepared to inspire the next generation of students in STEM education.3 Big Takeaways from this episode:Collaboration is crucial to achieve big goals: Talia recognized early on that no single person or organization could reach this goal on their own. 100Kin10 made it their work to inspire and mobilize hundreds of organizations to take up this mission, own their role in it and help make it a reality. When tackling any multi-faceted problem, prioritize the issues that have the most leverage: Through their nationwide research, the organization found that there are hundreds of challenges that have created this chronic STEM teacher shortage. To achieve the 100Kin10 goal, the partners would have to focus on solving the biggest issues that would have the greatest impact.Don't reinvent the wheel; and let the experts in the room do the problem-solving: For each of these STEM teacher shortage issues, there was most likely a solution that had been developed somewhere in the world. The initiative created a national, common space for all those teachers and resources to be connected to each other, share ideas and take successful strategies back to their own districts. Whether it was sharing resources that already worked or putting people together to create solutions that were then spread across the network, 100Kin10 let the experts in the room do what they do best. What's next for 100Kin10?10 years have gone by and 100Kin10 have surpassed their goal, but the STEM teacher shortage isn't ended. Recently, they've been listening to the stories of young people who have been most excluded from STEM learning. This has laid the groundwork for their next big goal: to prepare and retain 150,000 teaches in the next 10 years. While there can be some merit in taking that leap, today's guest still believes that learning the ropes first by working as a junior designer and freelancing on the side will strengthen the bid to build your own company later on.With over 30 years of experience in the industry, Von Glitschka, Creative Director and Founder of Glitschka Studios, knows what he's talking about. His branding illustrations, marketing strategies, and diverse range of creative work have been utilized by SMB's and global brands alike and have gained significant attention in marketing industry circles.Von and I discuss: His experience with illustration in art school and leveraging it for design purposes His career trajectory; beginning as a screen printer to starting his own business and growing his own clientele His baptism of fire of being wrongfully accused of accepting a job elsewhere and being fired as a result and how that got him thinking about starting his own business Working through design agencies vs. an illustrator rep to find clients His experience investing in a page in illustration source books and his advice for illustrators trying to find work The trend changes and industry shifts that shaped the way he went out to promote his own work and get new clients in different stages of his career How he got into offering video courses on LinkedIn Learning Where he gets the most leads for his business His advice for new illustrators about freelancing, learning from an art director and gathering experience before going solo. His experience of taking a Small Business Management course at the local community college and how he gained a valuable business mentor How he stays inspired by reading and constantly feeding his curiosity His Rapid Fire 10 Round answers include what he would tell his 20-year old self and his mantra rooted in The Golden Rule Mentioned in this episode:Von Glitschka's published works: https://www.glitschkastudios.com/vbt Glitschka Studios: https://www.glitschkastudios.com/aboutTo connect with Von, head on over to his channels:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/glitschkastudios/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/vglitschka/ Behance: https://www.behance.net/vonster Thanks for listening! Emily Thompson's experience starting the Being Boss podcast in 2015 is a strong argument for why you should always plan for success. She and her “business bestie” Kathleen Shannon started the podcast as a way of taking the conversations they were having about their businesses and being entrepreneurs into the public realm—and if they happened to promote their respective branding agency and web design shop in the meantime, well then, hey: that's a bonus! But a few months in and they were already getting ads. A little while later, they casually launched getaway events like the Being Boss Vacation and signed a book deal. The podcast was taking on a life of its own. Emily was already a successful web designer: she had gotten her start with her Etsy store, having fallen in love with the idea of selling handmade things online. It was during this time that she became “enamored with branding,” and diving deep into who she was serving and why they should care about her business. Eventually, she took her expertise and passion to other business people. She graduated from offering pointers on online banners to running Indie Shopography, her web design agency for more than a decade. So when it came time to launch Being Boss, it was a bit of a lark. “We had no business plan. We were just starting a podcast.” Emily and Kathleen went through the usual steps they'd take with any client—from the name, branding, website, and content buckets—but initially, they didn't plan to monetize their passion project. Their sudden success may sound amazing, but Emily cautions that it was “actually overwhelming.” The two of them experimented with a lot of different business tactics when they were building up the podcast, looking to see “what would stick.” Things weren't always easy-breezy: their foray into Facebook Ads was a colossal failure, so bad they didn't even do their customary postmortem. (Emily files aspects of their experiments under “what worked, what kind of worked, what didn't work,” taking lessons from each. “It's how we iterate and do the work we need to do to make the next time we do it even better.”)And then: burnout struck. Emily says that the rush of opportunities on the podcast side, plus some setbacks in her personal life and other business, led to a feeling of burnout. For Emily, burnout felt like “Ew.” She found herself getting angry and listless when it came to work topics. “I was very much not myself.” “For a while, we thought we were going to shut Being Boss down. We were both so tired.” She set a date, and promised herself that if her homebrew remedies didn't work by then, she'd get a therapist (and she did); she learned to recognize the way she felt leading up to a depressive episode (“a very deep tiredness”), and she shifted her priorities, giving herself more time. But the major solution for Emily wasn't to walk away—it was to invest more deeply. While her co-host and partner Kathleen wasn't ready to leave her day job, Emily wanted to go all-in. “Our solution for mutual burnout wasn't the same solution.” Almanac Supply Co. started in 2018 because she found her podcast convos were starting to verge on the meta. “It didn't sit well for me to show up as someone who knows business, but the only business I'm running is this podcast.” She thought back to her time as a web designer; she always “really envied” the folks who were working on product businesses. Pivoting to something nature-focused, hands-on and family-oriented—she even makes the candles with her partner—gives her a sense of purpose, and offering beautiful handmade items brings her back to her Etsy days, albeit with a major glow-up. “I get to show up and be the CEO.”ResourcesTo learn more about our guest, go to https://beingboss.club/aboutTo learn more about FreshBooks and take advantage of an offer exclusive to our podcast listeners, go to freshbooks.com/podcast Follow us on social @freshbooks, and remember to subscribe to get the latest episodes as soon as they become available!
