It's three days of panels, parties, contests, vendors, celebrity guests, live music -- everything you could want as a horror fan. This will be my sixth year hosting panels at the convention, but I've been going to Flashback much longer than just these six years. I love it.This year's Flashback features a salute to 30 years of the Scream franchise, celebrates Halloween II, a Night of the Creeps reunion, features first-time Flashback appearances from Henry Thomas, Steven Weber, and the Silent Night, Deadly Night Santas, and even has Obsession co-star Megan Lawless making her convention debut (I get to host her panel on Sunday! Come on out!). Plus, this year sees the world premiere of a brand new Full Moon movie (relevant to my interests!), in-costume photo opps, Alan Howarth playing the score to Halloween II LIVE along with the film, a tribute to Svengoolie (the greatest horror host of all time), and so much more.One of my favorite things about Flashback -- besides all the cool guests and the chance to spend the weekend surrounded by horror stuff and horror fans -- is that it's a family-run convention and really feels that way. Emerging as a sort of supergroup of Bay Area punk rockers in the early 2000s, The Plus Ones wrote catchy songs that weren't overthought by any means. After a four album stint in The Mr. T Experience, bassist Joel Reader formed the group, and one of the first songs he brought to the table was “All the Boys,” a fictional look at what playing at The Troubadour might be like for a stereotypical rock n' roller. To the band's surprise, they later received a call from Asian Man Records owner Mike Park informing them that the track was going to be used on a popular network TV show. In this episode, Joel discusses the writing and recording of the song, as well as the vivid memory of experiencing their music through a scripted television teen drama. The feeling of being overwhelmed is something that Sincere Engineer's Deanna Belos can tell you all about. She began her somewhat unexpected music career during a real crossroads in her life, in which she was deciding whether or not to pursue a career in the world of dentistry. It was around this time that she met producer Matt Jordan, who not only helped Deanna reach her musical potential, but also introduced her to the fellow musicians who would become the band. The song “Trust Me” was born out of this era, and within a few years, it was Sincere Engineer's set closer on the main stage at Lollapalooza.
