This week, the very prolific Gerry Beckley sits in to discuss the writing and recording of the 1975 #1 hit single from America, “Sister Golden Hair.” Despite the song's upbeat feel, the lyrics present a slightly sadder and more reflective theme, and this magic combination has helped the song stand the test of time over 50 years later. In this episode, Gerry shares the story behind the creation of this classic track, from his original four-track demo to his experience in the studio with legendary producer George Martin. Gerry Beckley is a songsmith in the truest sense, and “Sister Golden Hair” is a lesson in not overthinking, but rather letting your instincts lead the way. For over 30 years, Jim Kwik has coached Hollywood, professional athletes, political leaders, and Harvard University on how to learn faster and think sharper — and in this episode, he tackles the question sitting underneath so much of modern life: what happens to your mind muscle when every cognitive task gets handed off to ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini? The good news: your brain, like your muscles, adapts to the demands placed upon it at any age or stage. Jim explains why frustration and failure aren't obstacles to brain training, shares his personal top ten list of brain-building habits, ranging from racket sports to language learning and volunteering. He also delves into an MIT study examining the impact of ChatGPT and introduces his own framework for using AI as a genuine cognitive partner, rather than a replacement for human brain power.

Then, an Instagram creator makes a great point: where should mom and dad be able to get in for free? We're building that list. Plus, Walmart is giving its Great Value brand a massive makeover across nearly 10,000 products — do you feel embarrassed buying a store brand? And a new interactive map reveals just how many Flock surveillance cameras are in your neighborhood. Nearly 100,000 license plate readers are out there — is that keeping you safe or creeping you out? A Utah couple's viral TikTok — now with over 4 million views — shows prices jumping 50 cents per item at the Shake Shack kiosk inside Salt Lake City International Airport after they selected "no tip." Shake Shack says it was a technology error, not policy, and that licensee HMSHost has since fixed it. We break down the fiasco, Shake Shack's response, and ask YOU: do you tip at food kiosks, and where do you draw the line with tipping? Plus, CNBC's list of the top AI-proof job skills that require uniquely human abilities, why McDonald's and its rivals are finding that cheap meal deals no longer do the trick; we check out the new sport of Pop Darts. When it was time to record a new album, Ballyhoo! knew that they needed to shake things up. When the opportunity to work with acclaimed producer John Feldmann was presented, the band jumped on it, and the results were undeniable. The title track “Bad Summer” is an over-the-top, catchy-as-hell pop masterpiece, simultaneously capturing the vibes of summer and the feeling of relationship anxiety. In this week's episode, vocalist and guitarist Howi Spangler sits in to discuss the creation of the song that has quickly become a highlight of the Ballyhoo! catalog. We've been taught that healing is something you power through. Overcome the fear. Crush the goal. Cut the cord and move on. Danielle LaPorte says that's exactly why so many high-achieving women are still stuck in the same loops they swore they'd released; they were given the wrong instructions. In this episode, Dr. Stephanie (a self-described mechanist who wanted KPIs for her soul) gets Danielle to make "spiritual fitness" as concrete as a training program: a framework, metrics, and skills you can actually practice. They get into why cutting cords usually leaves you more hooked, not less; the fear of rejection quietly driving the woman who never misses a workout; the difference between ego goals (no party, no rest, onto the next thing) and heart-centered goals; and why the answer to a hard emotion is to bless it, not banish it.
We kick things off with Ethan’s recent car incident. We taste-test pickle-flavored Liquid IV. Plus, a Tesla driver pulls the classic "let me speak to your supervisor" move on a cop after getting pulled over for speeding…and blaming his car for doing all the speeding. And we take the WSJ's quiz on what's actually acceptable to wear to the office. KSL Brightside streams live weekdays 12–3 PM. Catch the YouTube-exclusive live stream from 12–1 PM and listen on the radio plus YouTube from 1–3 PM.
It's Friday on Brightside and we're kicking things off with a Utah burrito taste test! Then, KFC and Oreo teamed up to make a fried-chicken-flavored cookie in China (the creme filling is supposed to taste like the Colonel's 11 herbs and spices, minus the actual chicken)... why? Plus, Steve Kornacki went viral after spilling an entire bottle of water on his laptop during Tuesday's primary election livestream. And Netflix might win marketing stunt of the year: a man is literally living inside a furnished billboard 30 feet above Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood to promote their new thriller "The Last House." He's up there in a robe, brushing his teeth, and communicating with a whiteboard. KSL Brightside streams live weekdays 12–3 PM. Chris DeMakes A Podcast producer Chris Fafalios also co-hosts One Hit Thunder, which is the sister podcast to this show. Every year on One Hit Thunder, they roll out their beloved Thundred series, in which listeners of the show submit their Top 10 lists of a certain subject, and then those results are compiled into an ultimate Thundred list. This year, they very fittingly gathered together data to create the list of the 100 greatest one hit wonders of all time. This is the fourth installment, counting down #40 through #21. Utah is in the spotlight — Mirror Lake Highway, the stunning 42-mile scenic byway through the Uinta Mountains, was just named the most beautiful road in the United States. We ask the chat what they think. Then, a morning Memphis news anchor goes viral after falling asleep live on air. It's sparking a bigger conversation: should workplaces have sleep rooms? Plus, scientists have used CRISPR gene editing to create two hypoallergenic beagles named Bailey and Alfie that don't trigger allergies. It's a breakthrough for millions of dog lovers — but could it steer people away from adopting shelter pets? And KFC responds after a man claims his popcorn chicken bucket came up short. We've got the TikTok and the corporate clapback. KSL Brightside streams live weekdays 12–3 PM. Watch the YouTube-exclusive live stream from 12–1 PM, then catch us on radio and YouTube from 1–3 PM.

In October of 1998, Reel Big Fish released their third full-length album Why Do They Rock So Hard?, which captured the band at a time of peak musical exploration. One of the standout tracks from the album was “The Set Up (You Need This)”, and although the song didn't necessarily fit into the mold of classic ska-punk, the catchiness and signature style of the band was undeniable. From the energetic intro (featuring the first riff that Aaron ever wrote on guitar) to the falsetto hooks of the chorus, the song is a monster that still resonates and sounds amazing today. In this episode, Aaron and Scott share the story behind the writing and recording of this fan-favorite single. by Patrick BromleyChicago's biggest and best horror convention returns! One of my favorite weekends of the year is Chicago's annual Flashback Weekend, the horror convention created and run by Mike and Mia Kerz that takes place in Rosemont, Illinois. It's three days of panels, parties, contests, vendors, celebrity guests, live music -- everything you could want as a horror fan. This will be my sixth year hosting panels at the convention, but I've been going to Flashback much longer than just these six years. I love it.This year's Flashback features a salute to 30 years of the Scream franchise, celebrates Halloween II, a Night of the Creeps reunion, features first-time Flashback appearances from Henry Thomas, Steven Weber, and the Silent Night, Deadly Night Santas, and even has Obsession co-star Megan Lawless making her convention debut (I get to host her panel on Sunday! Come on out!). Plus, this year sees the world premiere of a brand new Full Moon movie (relevant to my interests!), in-costume photo opps, Alan Howarth playing the score to Halloween II LIVE along with the film, a tribute to Svengoolie (the greatest horror host of all time), and so much more. One of my favorite things about Flashback -- besides all the cool guests and the chance to spend the weekend surrounded by horror stuff and horror fans -- is that it's a family-run convention and really feels that way. All of the proceeds from the con go into supporting the Midway Drive-In located in Dixon, IL -- the nicest and best drive-in in Illinois -- which they bought in 2007. I love that Flashback is dedicated to preserving the big-screen theatrical experience. From this year's press release:Flashback Weekend Chicago Horror ConventionJuly 31 - Aug. 2, 2026Hyatt Regency O'Hare Chicago, Rosemont, IL 60018 Tickets now on sale at www.flashbackweekend.comFlashback Weekend Chicago Horror Convention celebrates its 25th year with a MASSIVE Celebrity guest line-up, amazing evening events, luxurious after-parties, an enormous vendor room, and special Celebrity costume Celeb Photo-Ops.All of this and more, taking place in one of the largest and most beautiful Convention hotels in the World!FLASHBACK WEEKEND 2026 SALUTES;-30 years of SCREAM! KSL’s Andrew Adams has the interview with the truck driver, and the the wild photos and video you have to see. Then, what do the ultra-wealthy spend money on that the rest of us have never even heard of? Alex has the list! And a houseboat sunk at Lake Powell. KSL Brightside streams live weekdays 12–3 PM. Today we taste test the new limited-edition Banana Nut Bread M&M's live on the stream. Then we pivot to a viral TikTok of two people kissing in Central Park that's sparked a massive debate — is it okay to film strangers in public and turn them into content? The morality police chime in. Next up, Disney is auctioning off real treasures from inside Disneyland and Walt Disney World — Big Thunder Mountain props, a giant Miss Piggy figure, a Tomorrowland trash can, and more. We pull up the photos and quiz Alex on what they are. We close with an insane survival story: an ER nurse was impaled by his own trekking pole on Montana's tallest mountain, assessed his own injuries, and hiked 10 miles out with it still in his body. This week's Throwback Thursday episode was first released as Episode 236 on December 9th, 2024. In this episode, Millencolin vocalist and bassist Nikola Šarčević discusses the writing and recording of the band's fan-favorite 2000 single "No Cigar." Nikola shares insights into the band's journey from their Swedish roots to their rise in the punk rock scene, propelled by their signing with Epitaph Records and the influence of skate culture. He reflects on the last-minute songwriting process for "No Cigar," which was written just hours before recording, and talks about the boost it received from being featured in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. The conversation explores the song's themes of freedom and identity, the dynamic interplay between guitars, and Brett Gurewitz's production, revealing what made "No Cigar" an enduring anthem for fans.
