It's the first episode of a new era! And what better way to start than with the hilarious and wonderful Ben Schwartz (Sonic the Hedgehog, Parks and Rec, The Afterparty) discussing improv and how you don't have TIME to overthink it. Find Ben's live show dates at rejectedjokes.com! Oh, and PS, the pre-show intro on this ep is probably a weeeeeee longer than it will normally be by just a few minutes, but it IS the first one of these after three years so hopefully that's okay. In this episode, Ian Dench of EMF joins the show to discuss the writing and recording of the band's explosive 1991 hit, “Unbelievable.” From its instantly recognizable hook to its genre-blending sound, the song became a cultural phenomenon and an enduring stadium anthem. Ian offers a look behind the curtain at the song's construction, including its layered instrumentation, unique pre-chorus, and the clever use of samples—most notably the shout of “Oh!” lifted from Andrew Dice Clay's stand-up album. He also recounts how a chance encounter with Rick Rubin at a New York restaurant led to Rubin casually granting sample clearance with the words, “Fax my office in the morning.” The conversation explores the emotional and musical influences that shaped the track, the challenges of creating in the analog era, and how personal experiences and playful experimentation helped fuel the song's unforgettable energy. On this episode, Chris is joined by his Less Than Jake bandmate Roger Lima to dive into the writing and recording of their 2024 single "Sunny Side." The conversation explores the song's layered instrumentation, dynamic horn arrangements, and emotionally resonant lyrics that center on self-realization, identity, and personal growth. Inspired by a fan's encouragement to “keep your sunny side up and your dirty side down,” the track blends heavy riffs with melodic textures, channeling arena rock energy while remaining rooted in ska-punk sensibilities. From the tension-building breakdown to the soaring vocal finale, Roger and Chris break down every element of the collaborative process that brought “Sunny Side” to life—both in the studio and on stage. "The After Party" is our series at Fusion Christian Church on the book of Acts. Follow along as we explore what happened to the church after Jesus ascended to heaven. In this sermon, Pastor Zac teaches us about the name (Jesus) that is above every name, and how the name of Jesus is specifically above your name.Jesus is the name of your healing.Jesus has the power to heal anyone of anything, and Christians can often see his miraculous power working. However, the most important healing that Jesus offers us is the spiritual healing we receive when we believe. When we become Christians, God works in our hearts to regenerate our spirits and bring from death to life. Physical healing is temporary, but the spiritual healing brought by Jesus through the gospel is eternal. One day, those who receive this spiritual healing will also receive new bodies like our present ones, but free of all weakness. This is accomplished when Jesus returns.Jesus is the name you obey. Many people want Christ's healing, but they have no interest in submitting to him. When it comes to God's kingdom, if you are only in it for the perks, you are not truly in it at all. Jesus said that those who love him keep his commands. To ignore God's rules is not the way of the Christian. Christ came to transform us into new men and women, not merely to grant us wishes. If we are to be transformed, we must keep his commands to the best of our ability.Jesus is the name you build on.The first stone laid in any building project is the most important one, because it orients everything that comes after. When the bible calls Jesus a "capstone" or "chief cornerstone" it means that he is the foundation for our faith and our lives. Is your life built on Jesus? Have you been trying to build on another foundation? If you make Jesus your cornerstone, it will orient everything else in the right way.Jesus is the name of your salvation.Christianity is exclusive. The gospel is available to all people, but there is not another gospel. When Jesus said he was the way, he meant it. All who call on the name of the Lord Jesus will be saved, and there is no other name in heaven or on earth by which we are saved. Call upon the name of Jesus for your salvation.

On this episode, Elyse Rogers of Dance Hall Crashers joins Chris to talk about the writing and recording of the band's 1997 fan favorite single, “Lost Again.” Elyse reflects on the group's collaborative dynamic, the comfort and shared vision she found working with producer Stoker, and how the song's lyrics touch on personal and industry struggles faced by artists trying to stay true to themselves. The conversation dives into the technical side of recording, including the band's use of tape to achieve their signature sound, and highlights how each member played a vital role in shaping the track. With candid reflections on the emotional toll of promotion, the joy of live shows, and the importance of mentorship, this episode shines a light on a band that's always put fun and authenticity first—and continues to influence the world of ska punk today. In this episode, J Navarro of The Suicide Machines joins the show to discuss the origins and last-minute magic behind “S.O.S.,” a fan-favorite track from their 1996 debut Destruction By Definition. J reveals that the song nearly didn't make the album, coming together late in the recording process after a scramble to finish it. At the time, the band was young and more interested in diving into the L.A. punk scene than soaking in the legacy of A&M Studios, where they recorded among the ghosts of classic albums. J credits producer Julian Raymond for capturing the energy and urgency that gives the album its lasting punch, and he gives drummer Derek Grant props for his significant songwriting and performance contributions to both this song and the album as a whole. Nearly three decades later, “S.O.S.” still hits hard, igniting crowds and standing tall as a staple of the band's live set. About The After Party of the Empty NestThe empty nest can be one of the toughest parts of parenting. It's a holy, hard giving-back, a sacred release of our children into God's care and their next chapter. But you, too, have a new chapter, and you can find peace as you transition from mom to empty nest mom and rediscover that mom is not your only name.Have you asked yourself:• Who am I now?• What is my purpose now that my children are gone?• What gifts and talents do I have to offer?• What should my priorities be?• How do I become something more than “Mom?”You're not alone, mama. Among the tears and apprehension of this brand-new season or the joy and celebration that you finally have your house back, you can find a new purpose as one mothering era ends and another begins. You'll discover your life is more than carpooling, laundry, and cries of “Where are my shoes?” And you'll find freedom to act on the dreams you deferred while handling the responsibilities of raising your children. There is a second act, a future with your name on it, different from your children's but filled with hope and surprises you cannot begin to imagine…if you plan for it, believe in it, and, with the Lord's help, walk fearlessly into it.You are cordially invited to the After Party…because Mom is not your only name.Purchase a copy of The After Party of the Empty Nest here.Connect with Kate Battistelliwebsite | Facebook | Instagram | XKate Battistelli is the author of The After Party of the Empty Nest: Mom is Not Your Only Name, the bestseller, The God Dare: Will You Choose to Believe the Impossible, and Growing Great Kids: Partner with God to Cultivate His Purpose in Your Child's Life. It's a special Throwback Thursday edition of Chris DeMakes A Podcast, and while the show usually digs deep into the archives, this week's rewind only takes us back a few months to a standout February episode featuring Tahlena Chikami of Bite Me Bambi. With her band hitting the road on Less Than Jake's Summer Circus tour, it's the perfect time to revisit her breakdown of the ska-pop gem “Bad Boyfriend.” Tahlena dives into the real-life inspiration behind the lyrics, working with producer Cameron Webb, and the balance between nostalgia and freshness in modern ska. From gang vocals to tour tales to the making of their album Eat This, this episode is full of energy, insight, and a whole lot of heart. This week, Chris is joined by his Less Than Jake bandmate JR Wasilewski to break down the writing and recording of "Walking Pipebomb" from the band's Uncharted EP. JR shares how a Dance Hall Crashers song sparked the initial idea, how his signature guitar style shaped the sound, and why the demo remained nearly identical to the final version. The conversation explores the band's collaborative songwriting process, the balance of musical tension and release, and how impactful lyrics can elevate a song's meaning. With Less Than Jake's 2025 Summer Circus tour on the horizon, this episode offers a deep dive into the creative forces driving the band's latest music. In this Throwback Thursday episode of Chris DeMakes A Podcast, originally released on May 1, 2023, Bert McCracken of The Used sits down with Chris to unpack the writing and recording of the band's breakout single, “The Taste of Ink.” McCracken takes listeners back to the early 2000s, when the song—written in a basement in Provo, Utah—captured the restless energy and emotional urgency that would come to define The Used's sound. He shares how a crucial studio session with producer John Feldmann in Los Angeles helped reshape the chorus and elevate the track into a career-launching anthem. With behind-the-scenes stories and a deep dive into the song's lyrics and legacy, this episode offers a powerful glimpse into the making of an emo classic.
