The downsides of sleep deprivation are legion: irritability, poor judgment, even lowered testosterone. Yet the duties of the .mil and LE career fields are well known for demanding odd and/or long hours that can make it hard to get good sleep. Mike talks with Dr. Paul Sargent of O2X, a specialist in human performances and sleep factors, in how to get the good shut-eye. Dr. Sargent retired from a 25 year Navy career that included such exotic postings as being the only psychiatrist in Anbar Province, where he helped stand up the Combat Sleep School. How to maximize healthy sleep hygiene without using drugs that might blunt the tactical edge is his specialty, and in this episode he talks with Mike about the best way we can adapt modern life schedules to bodies that have ancient sleep needs. Suzi talks with Josh Wheeldon about his journey to service, time during the military, his duty as a military police officer and his continued commitment to serve his fellow brothers and sisters. Josh's BioJoined the Army as a Military Police Officer in December 2004 shortly after I traveled to Korea 2005. In 2006 came to Fort Lewis where I deployed to the Anbar Province of Iraq for 15 months living embedded in an Iraq Police Station with Marines. Upon returning it was time to get out of the Army. When I was attending college in 2011 I was offered a position to go to Afghanistan, so like any other Veteran I left and found myself in the Kunar Province of Afghanistan at FOB Joyce within no time. I supported 25th Infantry Division (235) and 4th Infantry Division (212). Since returning I used my GI Bill and obtained a degree in Human Resources Management. I went to work for the Veteran Benefits Administration for the external affairs director. Finding the need for services I assisted in starting a Veteran Social Media group that actively serves nearly five thousands Veterans daily. I have served as Puyallup VFW Post Senior Vice Commander. My daily job is ensuring the Soldiers who are being medically separated from the Army are connected with the best resources to succeed outside of the military. I am what is called a Transition Coordinator at the Soldier Recovery Unit. Guest - Christopher Adams Chris is a US Army veteran who served 13 years on active duty as a communications specialist before being medically discharged in 2009. During his time on active duty, Chris deployed twice to Iraq. His first deployment was to Anbar Province in eastern Iraq from 2004-2005 and his second was to Baghdad during The Surge from 2006-2007. Email: christophernadams@ymail.com What You'll Get From Today's Show Chris tells us a little about his early life growing up and the circumstances that led him to joining the Army. Chris recalls some of his most vivid memories of going through basic training as a slightly older recruit and assignment to his Army career field as a communications specialist. Assigned to a mobile response unit in Washington D.C., you'll hear Chris' experience on the scene at the Pentagon in the days following the 9/11 attacks. Chris shares a little of what life was like for a soldier stationed in South Korea in the early 2000s with 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment (1/9IN), 2nd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (2/2BCT). In what was probably a first, 2/2BCT, already forward deployed, was alerted and ordered to deploy from South Korea to Iraq. Chris recalls that period of shock and surprise of getting told the news. Chris relates some of his experiences with 1/9IN in Iraq's volatile Anbar Province during his unit's 2004-2005 combat deployment. Fresh from his deployment to Iraq, Chris relates his journey straight to a new home in the United States at Fort Carson, Colorado. 1/9IN transforms from a heavy combined arms battalion with Abrams Tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles to a light reconnaissance squadron, now designated 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment (3/61CAV), equipped with only HMMWV (Humvee) trucks and heavy machine guns. Chris describes his experiences during the train up period with 3/61CAV in Colorado and then back to Iraq for what would eventually become a 15-month long deployment to eastern Baghdad in 2006 during The Surge. Chris shares some of his experiences from his second Iraq deployment, explaining how it was different from his previous deployment a year earlier. Chris reflects back on his Army experiences, some of the strong friendships made, and his sometimes difficult transition back to civilian life after a medical discharge. Get Up Nation®! My name is Ben Biddick. I’m the Creator and Host of the Get Up Nation® Show and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Mike Day. He’s the author of Perfectly Wounded: A Memoir About What Happens After a Miracle. Released June 9, 2020 Mike writes about his experience serving as a Navy Seal in Iraq’s Anbar Province. On April 6, 2007, Senior Chief Day was the first through the door where four terrorists were waiting in ambush. Mike was shot 27 times and hit with grenade shrapnel in that moment. He also killed the four terrorists, cleared the rest of the house, and rescued six women and children before walking out of the house by his own power. He was medevac’d to safety and began his profound journey of recovery. While being treated for his wounds, he lost 55 pounds in two weeks. It took nearly two years for his body to recover from his injuries although he still deals with significant pain. He was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injury. 20JAN2007: His unit tasked with keeping the peace ahead of the coming Ashura festival in Karbala, Iraq, PFC Shawn Falter was at his post the evening of 20JAN2007. Although just outside Baghdad, Karbala hadn't yet seen the spike in violence that Baghdad or Anbar Province had. Just before 1800 that night, at least five SUV's moved through the outpost checkpoints and parked near the provisional coordination center. Not unusual for American or Iraqi VIPs to travel in this manner, seeing this would not have been out of the ordinary for PFC Falter. However, this wasn't a group of friendly visitors but enemy commandos in disguise. Exiting the vehicles, approximately ten enemy fighters stormed the building where a small US force was working and sleeping. Caught off guard, one American Soldier was killed and three wounded in the brazen attack. Less than 15 minutes after the ambush began, the enemy left the compound having captured four American Soldiers. Their convoy now being tracked by American forces, the enemy executed their four American prisoners. The surprise attack on the US compound in Karbala is widely considered the most sophisticated enemy attack during the Iraq war. Co-Hosting today's Saga episode is Army Veteran, Mike Humphreys. Mike is no stranger to podcast visits and media, so the chat was real light. Living in Portland, OR, Mike spends a lot of time outdoors and when he isn't he is an English online tutor to Chinese students, so we got into the coronavirus of course, business is booming right now. When he was 8-years old he was cast as "Young Forrest Gump" in the movie Forrest Gump, to one up that, he joined the Army as an Infantryman and served in 1st Armored Division and deployed to Anbar Province, Iraq. Mike has a deep tradition of military service in his family, so it made since for him to be interested in the Army. This was the first time that Mike has openly talked about his personal feelings about serving and how it has effected him, most hosts just want to hear about Gump he said, but he opened up about how he feels and how it has effected him. He left the thought and idea of his service behind and went 11 years before reaching out to Veteran friends, he discovered that they were going through the same things he was, but had 10 years to deal with it. Mike is working through his understanding of his own mental health, but he has a great ability to express himself and how he feels. He graduated from college a year ago and went to the VA and sought counseling, opened up the years of service and is on the climb back up. Since everyone has seen "Forrest Gump", he is planning on using that as a platform to spread Mental Health Awareness. Check out Mike's video when he talks about his experience with PTSD and its effects, very good example of talking through it. Expect to hear from Mike here again on the podcast and be on the lookout for him in upcoming movies, he's making some moves. Everyone stay safe out there and stay blessed. HOV©2020

Matthew Hoh joins me this week. Matthew took part in the American occupation of Iraq; first in 2004-5 in Salah ad Din Province with a State Department reconstruction and governance team and then in 2006-7 in Anbar Province as a Marine Corps company commander. When no t deployed, Matthew worked on Afghanistan and Iraq war policy and operations issues at the Pentagon and State Department from 2002-2008. In 2009, Matthew resigned in protest from his post in Afghanistan with the State Department over the American escalation of the war. He is currently a Senior Fellow at the Center for International Policy. We discuss the history of US involvement in Afghanistan, the geopolitical implications, the prospects for peace, and the devastation caused by 4 decades of war.
David Richardson is from Waterford, Michigan. From an early age, he was taught to draw and paint by his mother, an artist and an art teacher. Richardson served as a combat arms officer and martial arts instructor for twenty-two years in the USMC, later retiring to paint and write. He was awarded for valor (Bronze Star with V device) during combat operations in Anbar Province, Iraq and served three tours in the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Africa. War Story is his first novel. David Richardson- Military Experience David was an artillery officer in the Marine Corps. He taught artillery school for a while and was at George Washington University as MOI prior to going into combat as a military combat team OIC. David did a tour in Afghanistan and East Africa but the highlight was being an advisor to the Iraqi Army in Iraq during 2006. “And that’s kind of what the book actually focused on, that’s why I mention it..” -David Richardson Transitioning When David left the Marine Corps, he requested from the monitor when he left Korea to be given a job where he learned something as a civilian and the leadership they teach you in the Marine Corps. They assigned David to NAVSEA which was an acquisition command and something that he had never done. Upon retiring he got a job at a contracting company. “Really what I was wanting to do was write a book and sell my paintings because I had painted the whole time I was in the Marine Corps.” -David Richardson Entrepreneurial Venture David was painting and started showing his work in galleries around 1998-2000. He developed a style that was appealing to contemporary art galleries and had difficulty collecting money from the galleries. David ended up in New York showing his paintings and it did not move as fast as he wanted. Now David represents himself and sells more paintings now than he did through galleries. “I actually rent venues in downtown DC and an artist friend of mine, who’s never been in the military and he writes for one of the local papers, we do shows together.” -David Richardson Writing A Book David’s first novel is War Story. He talks about determination being the biggest take away from the Marine Corps that helped him write a book. David simply would not give up and saw it through to the end. Giving up was not an option in the Marine Corps. He wrote three or four pages at a time and took a lot of advice. “You develop thick skin in the Marine Corps, and for somebody to look at your writing and go you need to change this or that, I never fell in love with my own book.” -David Richardson To hear more about David’s entrepreneur success, download this episode now.
