We're talking about chief information security officers CISOs, one of the top-dog roles in cybersecurity, and for many professionals, it's the brass ring they spend their careers trying to reach. The expectations of a CISO are changing, too, and requirements are growing in many different ways. Mike Scott, CISO of data security provider Immuta, has seen the role change a lot in the past 15 years, and he's seen the role of CISO move from out of the shadows and into the spotlight for the C-suite, but at a price: when a breach happens, the CISO is often the one who takes a fall. Is this a reasonable expectation? Will the role of CISO change even more? I talked to Mike about all this and the eight years he spent as the CISO of the Wendy's fast-food chain! Federal Tech Podcast: Listen and learn how successful companies get federal contracts
Forty years ago, the boxer Roberto Duran famously said, “No mas.” Translated from Spanish, it means, “no more.” Sugar Ray Leonard was bombarding him with too many punches to handle. The flood of data and the incredible size of data stores in the federal government is causing the federal government to examine how to store and categorize data more efficiently. We could be reaching the point where federal agencies say, “No mas.” Today's interview with Chris Brown from Immuta offers a solution: federated governance. This is a decentralized approach to ingesting data where tags can be automatically added, and data is classified by attribute-based access control. During the interview, Chris talks about policy management through what is called mesh architecture. Essentially, it is a method that is cloud agnostic and allows for scalability and reliability that today's data stores can't provide. Most readers know about the federal data strategy as recommended by the Data Act and the Evidence-based Policy Act. They encourage something called “self-service analytics.” This means that a domain expert can retrieve data and derive insight from it without having to engage with information technology experts. Immuta's proprietary method originated with the company founders working with people in the Intelligence Community. Their challenge was sharing information about threats without compromising sensitive data. Their approach allowed for the automation of tags that could provide for the much-desired collaboration without revealing details that weren't appropriate for consumption outside a specific realm. The rising use of artificial intelligence in sensitive industries such as recruitment, criminal justice, and healthcare has raised debate about bias and impartiality. However, human decision-making in these and other disciplines might be incorrect due to unconscious individual and social biases. In this IQT Podcast episode we are joined by Andrea Brennen, VP of Design and Visualization at IQT labs, Andrew Burt, Managing partner at BNH.AI and chief legal officer at Immuta, and Patrick Hall, a principal scientist in BNH.AI, visiting professor in the Dept. of Decision Sciences at George Washington University. They will share insights and knowledge on how we test and assess AI technology to minimize unwanted biases and also consider legalities and ethics. Listen to this episode if you're interested in AI technology and want to discover how it's being evaluated from a legal and ethical stance.
Nancy Pate, general manager, Public Sector and Danny Holloway, Public Sector Field chief technology officer at Immuta, join host John Gilroy on this week's Federal Tech Talk to share methods to overcome some of the typical access-control issues inherent in applying zero trust principles to enterprise-level applications and data.
Product-led growth (PLG) has become one of the most effective ways to grow in SaaS and tech. More and more companies are relying on their products as the main driver to gain customers. But using your product to acquire customers doesn't mean you should neglect sales and marketing. In fact, these three growth models work best when you align them to create a seamless customer experience. In this episode of the Product Led Revenue podcast, our host Breezy Beaumont welcomes Moritz Plassnig, the Chief Growth Officer at Immuta and former Founder & CEO of Codeship, a company acquired by CloudBees in 2018. Breezy and Moritz get into what makes the product-led growth strategy so effective, how to decide which type of growth model is right for your company and how to align sales and marketing in your business.

On this episode, part two of two, Darren continues his discussion on modern data governance with Matthew Carroll, CEO of Immuta. In modern data governance, the first premise is that you have to separate policy from platform. The second is that there can be no ontology. If anyone tries to create a super schema of everything, it's impossible, but you need a schema to apply policy. So if a user wants to join two columns, you have to have a new policy. Sensitive data must be discovered, both through direct and indirect identifiers. Indirect identifiers are more difficult, and techniques must be applied to mitigate the risk of link attacks. “When it comes to investors, the profile of the person that's going to join the board or have observer rights is incredibly important. Virtues and values become important. As an entrepreneur, I ask myself, would I take these folks into battle? Are these folks the people I need when we hit downtime? Are they going to lift us up?” - Matt CarrollKey Takeaways: Every decision around data requires legal oversight - its method of collection, who is using it and why, and is there consent to use this data? The transformational part of this data movement is to detect sensitive data and automatically build rules around it to ensure audit and compliance. Being deliberate about the virtues that define the company and its mission reflects a company's culture. Values are aspirational; it's what you want your company to be. Virtues are intrinsic to who you are. Sustaining the culture requires a strong focus on hiring around virtues. Demand generation in a post-Covid world requires every employee and stakeholder to become a champion. Itis about building the four horsemen - inbound, outbound, referral, and partner and establishing supporting programs. Growth by expansion is realized by building a world-class customer success organization. When it comes to deciding on features of a global product, talking to your customers and having a structured process to include the voice of the customer into the product is the key.

Abstract of the talk… Hundreds of data teams have migrated to the ELT pattern in recent years, leveraging SaaS tools like Stitch or FiveTran to reliably load data into their infrastructure. These SaaS offerings are outstanding and can accelerate your time to production significantly. However, many teams prefer to roll their own tools. One solution in these cases is to deploy singer.io taps and targets — Python scripts that can perform data replication between arbitrary sources and destinations. The Singer specification is the foundation for the popular Stitch SaaS, and it is also leveraged by a number of independent consultants and data projects. Singer pipelines are highly modular. You can pipe any tap to any target to build a data pipeline that fits your needs, making them a good fit for containerized workflows. This article walks through the workflow at a high level and provides some example code to get up and running with some shared templates. I also drill into reasons for choosing the Argo approach over other orchestration tools like Airflow or Dagster, and the implications from a team perspective. Bio… Stephen Bailey is Director of Growth Analytics at Immuta, where he strives to implement privacy best practices while delivering business value from data. He loves to teach and learn, on just about any subject. He holds a PhD in educational cognitive neuroscience from Vanderbilt and enjoys reading philosophy

Data governance is a term that encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, both technical and process oriented. One of the more complex aspects is that of access control to the data assets that an organization is responsible for managing. The team at Immuta has built a platform that aims to tackle that problem in a flexible and maintainable fashion so that data teams can easily integrate authorization, data masking, and privacy enhancing technologies into their data infrastructure. In this episode Steve Touw and Stephen Bailey share what they have built at Immuta, how it is implemented, and how it streamlines the workflow for everyone involved in working with sensitive data. If you are starting down the path of implementing a data governance strategy then this episode will provide a great overview of what is involved.

In today's episode Rosalie and Dan reflect on the concept of ideal city and the ways we can use technology to achieve it. Dan points out that despite its benefits, technology can easily obscure its many disadvantages. We have not yet managed to accommodate the voices that lack resources and are excluded from the participation. Can AI generated data substitute those voices and if so what are the ethical ways to do that? How much progress has been done in making cities more inclusive in the last 60 years? Dan, Rosalie and Corina dive into a reflective exchange of cases famous in the history of city design and governance - from the ideologically-focused emergence of Brasilia to Taiwan's response to SARs. Imagine this. You have Covid-19. You’re running out of breath. You’re inside a hospital emergency room getting a blood transfusion. Suddenly this happens. There’s a leak somewhere. Your bodily fluids spew and splash all over the bed sheets, some of the droplets land on the exposed skin of the emergency physicians and nurses risking their lives to save you. Is this an impossible scenario? No. The lack of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for healthcare workers dominated headline news earlier this year, and continues to be a challenge for some hospitals around America. In Part 4 of Season 5 True Colors: “Protecting Frontline Doctors & Nurses”, I talked with Dr. Alicia Lu about the risks she faced as an Emergency physician in New York hospitals. Legal & Ethical Data Analytics | Modern Access & Privacy Controls The benefits of cloud analytics are enormous, empowering organizations to deliver insights faster than ever before while also reducing costs. Despite the strong upside, the migration of analytics workloads to the cloud has slowed - the result of an increasingly complex landscape of regulations intended to protect the privacy of data subjects. This has exposed data teams to new levels of risk when managing sensitive data and has resulted in a fear of litigation for violating regulations like GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA or a variety of rules such as employment laws, third party data use contracts, SOC-2 compliance, and others. These pressures are daunting, but they don’t have to be. New architectural requirements are emerging in the personal data era that can safely scale data access for analytics in the cloud, while reducing legal and ethical risks.
In this episode of the Data Exchange I speak with Andrew Burt, Chief Legal Officer at Immuta and co-founder and Managing Partner of BNH.ai, a new law firm focused on AI compliance and related topics. As AI and machine learning become more widely deployed, lawyers and technologists need to collaborate more closely so they can identify and mitigate liabilities and risks associated with AI. BNH is the first law firm run by lawyers and technologists focused on helping companies identify and mitigate those risks. Our conversation focused on a range of topics including:Why a law firm is the right vehicle for helping companies manage and mitigate risks associated with AI and machine learning. The legal profession's long history in managing risk and regulatory frameworks.Model governance.Incident response and recovery.Detailed show notes can be found on The Data Exchange web site.Subscribe to The Gradient Flow Newsletter.
A solid data strategy can prevent your company from running aground and turning a huge opportunity into a horrible mess. Dan Wu is our guest on this episode of the Georgian Impact Podcast. Dan is a superstar commentator in the privacy and data governance space. He's leveraging his Ph.D. in Sociology and Social Policy and his law degree to help protect people and their data. Dan believes that the best way to do that is through data strategies formed by cross-functional teams that include input from governance, analytics, marketing and product departments. You'll hear about: What we can learn from the botched launch of the Apple Credit Card Why every company needs a data strategy How regulation, like the Algorithmic Transparency Act, could add protections for consumers and accountability for business Offensive vs. defensive data strategy – HBR Article Where responsibility for inaction leading to data breaches should lie Data risks businesses face, including biased algorithms, sharing data with the wrong people, 3rd party data breaches, insider incidents, and technical mistakes Why data ethics need to go beyond what's strictly legal in order to establish and maintain trust. AI Now's 2019 report that touches on ethical inequality risk factors in AI Who is Dan Wu? Is a smart city more about people or technology? What would a smarter New York City look like? How can we ensure that a smart city is not a nightmare for privacy? In this episode of IBM thinkLeaders podcast, we are joined by Mike Barlow (coauthor of Smart Cities, Smart Future, managing partner at Cumulus Partners) & Dan Wu (Privacy counsel and legal engineer at Immuta). We talk sensors, optimization, and the need for greater civic engagement when building smart cities. We also get into whether smart cities will usher in a Utopia or Dystopia, and how smart cities may reinvent democracy. Connect with us + the guests: @IBMthinkLeaders @ImmutaData @mike7pilot “For me, a smart city is about thinking about the process of making smarter decisions and more capacity. And that includes not only physical technological infrastructure but also, and a lot of people forget this, it's the scientific and civic infrastructure. How we make decisions.” -Dan Wu “I would define smart cities as places that use digital technologies, and this is key, 21st-century marketing techniques to communicate with citizens, to engage with citizens and to inspire higher levels of citizen engagement in the ongoing development of public policy. This is absolutely essential. In other words, they have to be democracy incubators. We have to reinvent democracy and grassroots participation in the city.” -Mike Barlow BIOS Mike Barlow is an award-winning journalist, prolific author, and business strategy consultant. He is the author of Learning to Love Data Science (O’Reilly 2015), and co-author of Smart Cities, Smart Future (Wiley 2019), The Executive’s Guide to Enterprise Social Media Strategy (Wiley 2011), and Partnering with the CIO (Wiley 2007). He is also the author of many articles, reports, and white papers on numerous topics including AI, machine learning, IoT governance, ambient computing, predictive maintenance, advanced data analytics, and digital transformation. Over the course of a long career, he was a reporter and editor at several respected suburban daily newspapers, including The Journal News and the Stamford Advocate.
