Magnesium deficiency is an obstacle to the chelation of toxins. Magnesium Disodium versions of EDTA (Magnesium Disodium EDTA (C10H12MgN2Na2O8)), the most widely recognized chelation agent for heavy metals and certain minerals, can be easily found in medical literature and needs no introduction here (1). This EDTA stands as proof of magnesium's role in the synergy of chelation in the human body. How acids and metals or certain mineral salts react outside of the body, by mixing industrially produced acids to specific metals to produce combined forms, should not be confused with the “seemingly identical” process mirrored within the living human body.In the living body, enzymes play a key role in these interactions. Magnesium is involved in all of these interactions through the enzymes' own dependence on magnesium for a more perfect transformation, catalyzation, chelation or conjugation. Magnesium is an essential factor for enzyme efficiency. Magnesium is also a natural calcium channel blocker, reducing the cell's rigidity.

Magnesium deficiency is running rampant. Many experts estimate that 80% of Americans are magnesium deficient. And, a major contributing factor is the presence of excess calcium in the body mainly coming from the extreme ratio difference in common foods such as: fortified orange juice (27:1), cheese (26:1), yogurt (11:1), dairy (7:1) and the very commonly used antacids (300:1). Other common contributing factors include: -Fluoride -Processed foods -Alcohol -Coffee -Sugar -Stress -Medications When should you take magnesium? How do you test your magnesium levels or know if you have a deficiency? It’s critical to get high enough doses of magnesium to compensate for the fact that our typical diet runs low on this vital mineral. But fact is, although magnesium is an incredibly important mineral, there are many unanswered questions and confusion around magnesium, so I though it was high time to have my friend and nutrition researcher Thomas DeLauer back on the show. I first interviewed Thomas DeLauer in the episode  I then interviewed him again in the episode  Thomas is one of the leading experts in the world of chronic inflammation as well as the response of the human body to a low-carb diet. He is noted for his personal transformation from a 280-pound overweight corporate executive to not only being on the cover of health and fitness magazines worldwide but pioneering some of the mainstream awareness of auto-immune diseases and inflammation in general! Thomas has been highlighted in over 20 magazines showcasing his transformation and has been featured worldwide on the cover of Ironman Magazine, Muscle and Performance Magazine, Natural Muscle Magazine, ICON Magazine, Platform Magazine and Ironman Japan. His background is in Sports Psychology, although it is this passion for psychology coupled with a career in healthcare as a physician recruiter and owner of an ancillary lab services company that sparked his love for nutritional science and what makes the body tick. He is currently working on  to identify a strain of bacteria that may help modulate inflammation within the body. Residing near Santa Barbara, California, with his wife, three dogs, two horses, and 11 month old son. Thomas promotes a lifestyle of living as close to the earth as possible to obtain the best possible results while still achieving maximum performance in every possible area of life. What form of magnesium is best, and are different forms better for different needs, like sleep vs. brain vs. digestion? In this episode, Thomas and I also discuss , a product Thomas is helping to develop, is the only time-release, high-potency magnesium supplement with peer-reviewed clinical trials to back up it's efficacy. MagSRT®  was evaluated in the Scottsdale Magnesium Study (SMS), a placebo-controlled, human clinical trial of 91 participants. The study measured Serum Magnesium, Red Blood Cell (RBC) Magnesium, and Magnesium Deficiency symptoms. The results are published in the peer-reviewed Journal of American College of Nutrition (JACN). It is a Sustained Release Technology (SRT) magnesium in a super-absorbable, premium organic form called dimagnesium malate, along with an active form of Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid) and Vitamin B6 (P5P) During our discussion, you'll discover: -Is there a way to supplement your magnesium levels without unpleasant side effects such as loose stool and "constarrhea"?...11:20 Magnesium is "hydrophilic" meaning it attracts water.  It creates "passive diffusion" where it attracts water into the intestine. There's nothing to regulate how fast the water enters the small or large intestine. The type of magnesium (ex. epsom salt vs. magnesium citrate) one takes makes a big difference in how fast it will attract water. -A few of the more popular forms of magnesium, and which one is optimal for the varying functions we might like to use it...13:40 Magnesium citrate: high bio availability; creates a laxative effect. Magnesium chloride: Typically contains only 10-15% magnesium. It's used to chelate other minerals such as iron and other heavy metals. These two factors are why magnesium chloride is recommended for detoxes. Topical magnesium (epsom salt, etc.): Gets absorbed into the serum, but not red blood cells. Doesn't have the same laxative qualities. Only 1% of magnesium is ever measured, and that's in the serum and blood levels. Elevated magnesium levels in the serum means it's likely pulling it from blood and plasma, thus decreasing levels there. A high reading in magnesium can actually mean you're low in magnesium if you're only measuring it in the serum. RBC (red blood cell) magnesium:  This is the gold standard for when you want your magnesium tested. Magnesium Glycinate: (Marge amazon link) Is often recommended by doctors.  Transferred through the intestinal wall. Very expensive option. Calming on NMDA receptor. (Glutamate is excitatory) Magnesium Malate:  Absorbs very slowly; sustained release. More powerful on the energy cycle. You'll see more of a difference in how you actually feel. Thomas uses it to remain even keeled. How combining magnesium with malic acid contributes to ATP production. Has to do with how it accompanies potassium. When you have malate, magnesium can do its job better. It aids the magnesium as well as potassium in producing ATP. -More forms of magnesium...26:53 Magnesium oxide: Non-chelated; you'll take it throughout the day. Used more for acid reflux treatment. Very low bio-availability and very specific uses. Magnesium Oratate: Same category as magnesium taurate. Helps with delivery to the cell membrane. Good for the DNA and RNA cycle. Used in calming situations such as meditation. Cardiac benefits. Magnesium sulfate: Easy to overdose. Epsom salt baths: Hard to determine if it's absorbed via the skin or through the breath. -How much magnesium actually gets absorbed with the lotions and sprays available on the market...38:40 The form of magnesium changes when it enters your body. Flawed marketing; not enough research to determine its efficacy one way or the other. Magnesium carbonate... Used as an alternative to a calcium form of chalk you find at the gym. -Magnesium threonate...42:00 Powerful effect on the blood brain barrier. Has been used in the treatment of PTSD. -The supplement Ben uses to induce weird and amazing dreams...45:30 -Is there a way to elongate the time in which magnesium is absorbed in order to reduce the laxative and other unpleasant effects?...47:36 Take into account what other minerals it's working with. Couple it with the right vitamins and minerals. P5P = Vitamin B6.  Magnesium has over 300 enzymatic reactions. B6 helps with ~30 of those reactions, including the manufacturing of serotonin and dopamine in the brain. Is involved in the absorption of magnesium. Hard to convert folic acid into folate. Vitamin B9, along with magnesium is a co-factor with Vitamin B6; allows you to better absorb the magnesium. Vitamins B6, B9 and B12 are the trifecta for working with magnesium. -The relationship between magnesium and ceruloplasmin and iron.59:30 Iron oxidizes, whether in your body or out. Too much of it will occupy oxygens that could be doing other good things. We have an abundance of iron, but it's "bound iron." We need the unbound iron; it allows other minerals to do their job. We need other minerals to counteract the overabundance of bound iron. Magnesium allows iron to enter into the unbound state and help red blood cell function. Ceruloplasmin helps with the utilization of iron; taking the iron in your body and turning it into a true storage form. -What tests Thomas recommends to analyze these things...1:06:00 -The study Thomas published on the effects of magnesium...1:08:10 Sponsored by . 28% and 63% improvement over 30 and 60 days. Red blood cell magnesium increased 6% and 30% over 30 and 90 days. Intro (0:00) News and Views (0:40) Welcome back from Texas, Sarah! Sorry you lost your voice! Sarah always tries to take it easy after travel because it hits her hard. We counted wrong. This is 249, not 250. But next week will be special! Sarah is back from Paleo FX, our favorite paleo event! We love meeting people, talking to people and finding interesting stories. Weekly reminder that Paleo Principles is coming soon! Stacy couldn't make it this year because we had so much going on this year, including selling our house! This year Paleo FX wasn't about "carbs" or other controversies, but on getting back to the anthropological roots, it seemed. Sarah feels like she didn't have to defend science as a concept this year like she has in the past. Remember: science is a process for finding truth, not a monolithic set of ideas. The idea of Paleo FX is paleo as implemented into practice. So getting into minutiae seems silly. Sarah's talk was about what we know from scientific reaseach about reducing disease risk. She thought it was well received. Paleo FX did seem to be focusing on synthesizing modern and evolutionary biology. Several talks focused on lifestyle factors like sleep. Sarah liked hearing about it from Dan Pardi and Dr. Kirk Parsley Next year, Paleo FX is rebranding to Health FX, a controversial decision! Sarah and Stacy think this is part of a greater movement to make paleo idea more mainstream and associated with just good health. Just make sure that your conference doesn't suddenly become full of angry vegans! Some things that Sarah loved: Sarah liked Jilz Crackers (which were our late brother Andrew's favorite), which are sesame and almond flour. Delicious and some are AIP-friendly! Sarah tried some alfajores, which she loved! Sarah also liked the new ghee based chocolate spread MuffinElse was there with a just add water pancake mix that she liked Pure Indian Foods has a new oils like Black Cumin Seed oil that are great. Epic bar has a lot of new flavors, including AIP friendly ones like a great Salmon one. One Stop Paleo Shop now has a chocolate hazelnut bar from Hu's Kitchen. It's awesome! Xero Shoes has a line of natural movement shoes that are tough but flexible. Enviromedica was there with their supplement lines PrescriptAssist and Ancient Minerals. She liked the Magnesium lotion with melatonin Anthony Morocco from Morocco Methods gave Sarah advice on managing her daughter's hair. And Sarah's Vital Proteins Veggie Blend was a big hit, too! And was demonstrated by Snap Kitchen in a beet hummus. Sweet Apricity has a line of tasty, dangerous caramels. Stacy was happy to see that Aimee Rose, who she met through Strongman has been at Paleo FX two years in a row! Paleo FX has a service called Paleo FX TV which allows you to see all the talks from the history of Paleo FX as a subscription service. Next week is episode 250! Exciting! Rate and Review us! Paleo Quick Tip of the Day

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 23, 2016 15:51

Automatic health and fitness?  Wouldn’t that be nice, that’s probably your first thought.  I mean, nothing could be that easy, right? Well, it really is, it’s just a matter of setting up appropriate habits, and then following through for long enough that they just become your life!  And if they are good and healthy, and thus long term enjoyable habits, why then this is a prescription not only for automatic health and fitness, but actually a means to automatic happiness! I don’t mean that your ideal daily habits will be identical to mine at all, but there will definitely be some similarities, at least in diet and exercise, if you want to maximize health and fitness over your whole lifetime.  So here goes: I wake up early enough so that I can do what I view to be the most crucial part of my daily habits- this, of course, entails that I always go to bed early enough to get a solid 8 or more hours of good sleep!  So, I wake up refreshed, naturally ready to get up.  I go into a brief “mobility” series of stretches right in the upstairs bathroom first thing, so I wake my body and joints up gradually, taking each limb and set of joints through some simple easy rotations, to get the synovial fluid flowing, and the limbs warmed up.  Also, it just feels great- I am instantly revived for the day, and coupled with some deep breathing I am ready to go! Downstairs, I start the water boiling for my coffee, and begin making my smoothie as the water heats.  After making 3 cups of coffee in my Aerobie Press (actually it’s espresso, so it’s even smoother and better), I finish making my smoothie as I sip my first cup, which is laced with coconut oil. Then, carrying my cup into the living room, I start up Netflix usually, and continue on with a program or movie I was watching the morning before.  I do my Perfectly Paleo Exercise routine, which while varying from day to day, always includes virtual resistance exercises, calisthenics, rebounding, and isometrics.  There is always also a segment of floor stretches, capped off by a long set of bridging, that flows the blood into my head while simultaneously stretching out and adjusting my spine.  After about 45 minutes, I’m done, and feeling great, I go to take a shower. Before, however, I dry brush my skin, from foot to neck, always brushing towards my heart- this feels fantastic, and stimulates the lymph glands, although they’ve already gotten a great workout on the rebounder! Then, taking a small piece of coconut oil from the dish I keep in the bathroom, I put it in my mouth, and begin “swishing” it, or “oil pulling” which is the proper term- this is undoubtedly the top oral health regimen you can do, since the oil kills all the bacteria it encounters in your mouth!  After I leave the shower, I keep on swishing as I spray Magnesium oil over my body (from Ancient Minerals, the oil if from the Zechstein dead sea far beneath northern europe)- this is a great way to supplement magnesium to your body, in which virtually all modern people are deficient. Next, I rub coconut oil into my palms, and when melted thoroughly, I rub it over my skin, “anointing” my body as did the ancient Greeks after exercise. (But they used olive oil- you could do that if you prefer!)

Paleo Quick Tip of the Day

I don’t know if you are aware of the importance of magnesium to your health, but I am here to tell you it is crucial. Why do we need a magnesium, or indeed any kind of a supplement, if we are already eating a natural, God-made foods based paleo type of diet?  This is a reasonable question, and I personally try to keep supplements to a minimum, since getting them from natural sources is infinitely preferable.  This is why I make a Paleo Smoothie to drink daily, loaded with fresh vegetables of many types, kefir, coconut milk- well, go to Paleo Green Smoothie recipe to see all that I recommend at www.paleojay.com  The two “supplements” I put into that smoothie are:   1. Liquid vitamin D 2. Cod liver oil   Everything else, from the apple cider vinegar to the kelp, spirulina, and the several spices I put in are all real foods!  But, the other thing I think you should consider adding in to your regimen is magnesium - and I think the best way to do this is through magnesium oil, applied to the skin!   Paleo is not only what you eat; your whole lifestyle figures in.  This is why what you put on your skin is so important, since the skin absorbs what you put on it directly into your blood stream- think of your skin as another mouth!  In paleolithic times, the water we drank was loaded with magnesium, not so today with water from municipal treatment plants.  The plants we ate were grown in magnesium rich soil; much of our crops today are grown in soils pretty much depleted of magnesium, and other nutrients as well.  And so, you might need to eat twice as much green leafy veggies to get as much magnesium as our ancestors got from a much smaller amount. Oral magnesium can cause diarrhea, which may be desired if you are constipated; but, if you are paleo for a reasonable length of time, this will not be a problem.  And so, for most paleo folks, I recommend Magnesium Oil, either in a spray bottle or a lotion.  You just spray or rub in onto most of your body, and those ancient minerals (magnesium oil is obtained from the Zechstein Dead Sea, far underground in Europe), and the magnesium will go right into your bloodstream with no stomach upset. The thing about magnesium is that it is really important not only for bone and our physical health overall- it’s mental benefits are huge!  Magnesium is used in treating depression, anxiety, and even bi-polar mental illness to great effect; in addition, it is more helpful in making people sleep easily than melatonin.  Also, magnesium soothes sore muscles, and many have reported vast improvement in joint pain using it. So, get yourself a spray bottle!  Ancient Minerals is the premium brand, and for less than $20 you can have an 8 ounce bottle that will last quite a while of daily body coating spraying.  But, I have seen it advertised at Walmart and Walgreens for about 1/2 that, and the ingredients are about the same, straight from the Zechstein sea.  But, just get some, and add it to your daily routine.  I am big on routine; doing the same thing daily leaves you free to not have to remember things, you “just do it”, and benefit greatly ove

Scientific models of life’s origins almost always look to minerals for such essential tasks as the synthesis of life’s molecular building blocks or the supply of metabolic energy. But this assumes that the mineral species found on Earth today are much the same as they were during Earth’s first 550 million years—the Hadean Eon—when life emerged. A new analysis of Hadean mineralogy challenges that assumption.

Robert says: G'day Ben I have a question for the podcast. I wanted to know what your thoughts are on the Recovery Pump compression boots, also its competitor NormaTec also as a comparison. Their claims seem to be supported and they do what they claim to do from the literature I have read. Have you tried them? What would the effect of the recovery pump be when treating peroneal synovitis? Or other tendinopathies? Would you recommend this as a recovery modality with other traditional methods such as ice baths, NSAID's etc. Kathryn asks: I've read about recent research that found that swishing a mouthful of carbohydrate solution and then spitting it out rather than swallowing was effective in providing energy for a workout. Would this be an effective way to train in a fasted state occasionally, as Ben recommends, without the negative effects of inadequate fueling? I'm someone that doesn't tend to do well without food before my am workouts, even easy recovery type activity but I would like to try some fasted workouts occasionally. Rob asks: How many calories are you really burning when it is 10 degrees out. If I run 13 miles and my little Garmin says I have burned 1300 calories, how much does the cold, and my body dealing with the cold, add to the equation? Anton asks: I was wondering if there was ever a study done about inter-relationships of the amount of weight opposing muscle groups can lift. What I mean by that is: if I can bench press 225 10x should my shoulders be strong enough to handle say lateral raises with 35lbs 10x or shoulder presses with 130lbs 10x so on and so forth. Or be able to do 10 perfect form underhand pull ups (body weight of 210) and that would be equal to curling say 110lbs 10x? Jason asks: I developed dark circles under my eyes for the first time in my life in 2004 during a time of heavy work stress and little sleep. When I was able to return to a healthier lifestyle the dark circles persisted. Only later did I make the connection that I had also started drinking coffee during that same time period. I have been able to rule out caffeine as the cause by consuming sources of caffeine while abstaining from coffee, and I don't experience the raccoon eyes. Many sources refer to allergies as a common source of dark circles, but I have not found any sources referring to coffee as a possible allergen. Any ideas if coffee could cause an allergic reaction? If so, other than staying away from coffee, are there any other related food or beverage sources that I should also avoid? Love the podcast, keep up the good work and thank you very much. Brad asks: Always love the podcasts, and thanks for all the help you give. When I was in high school, I ran a winter race in zero degree windchill, and stupidly didn't wear gloves. I'm pretty sure I had what I now know to be second degree frostbite, but never saw a doctor about it. Now, ten years later, I still get tear-inducingly painful cold hands very easily, and have to wear gloves at pretty much all times outdoors except for the summer months. I've looked for alternative explanations, and my symptoms don't seem to match up with Raynaud's. Is this normal for a post-frostbite victim, and are there ways to reverse the effects? ~ In my response to Brad, I mention Sweet Sweat at www.sweetsweat.com Anonymous Podcast Fan writes: Often, you cover how to increase libido. How about the other side of the coin? Are there ways to decrease libido without negatively impacting health or fitness? Angie asks: I'm interested in knowing more about the link between hormone imbalances and fat stored in particular parts of the body. I am currently working on the reduction of fat in general through a combination of Metabolic Typing, a healthy diet and exercise however i seem to have more fat around the back of my upper arms down to my elbow compared to other parts of my body and wondered if there were any truth in some of the articles i have read regarding specific hormone imbalances causing fat to be stored in particular areas of the body and if you can give any advice whether from a hormone or exercise perspective which i can incorporate into my existing routine (heavy weights/interval training mainly). Huge thanks as always for all the amazing content you put out every day! ~ In my response to Angie, I mention estrogen dominance symptoms. Brian wrote: A friend told me about the benefits of MATCHA TEA for weight loss and general health benefits, which peaked my interest. I brew green tea daily from loose tea leaves, and have decided to make the switch to Match Tea. I used MATCHATEASOURCE.COM to purchase the tea. The site touts the many benefits of Matcha Tea. I googled your website for matcha and there were zero hits. What do you know about the benefits of matcha and would you recommend this stuff as part of a healthy nutritional plan. I'm interested in lowering my weight and keeping it down below 200lbs. My metabolic typing diet pegs me as a mixed type. My nutrition, when I'm disciplined, is whole, natural foods, about 35% protein, 40% fats and 25% carbs. Vegetables and fish are a common dinner. My morning meal is generally steal cut oats or quinoa with Heed2 30. My daily supplements include: Enerprime, Vitamin D nano spray, Magnesium oil (Ancient Minerals), fish oil (pharmac), Oil of Oregano, and Udo's 3-6-9 Oil. Will Matcha be that kick-ass metabolism boost I'm looking for? Adam asks: I was wondering if you could comment on the accuracy of this article about how eating more vegetables can make you look better. Brock interjects:What would you ideally recommend as a good Half Marathon race strategy? Dr. Christie is also certified in Active Release Technique (ART) and Graston Technique, which are the leading soft-tissue diagnostic and treatment protocols that deal with over-use strain that plagues today's society. During our discussion, Kevin answers the following questions: What is ART? What type of conditions is it useful for? How quickly can someone experience success with ART? Are there things ART shouldn't be used for? Can you walk us through a typical ART treatment? Can anybody do ART, or should people be looking for someone with a certification? First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code)   --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== Becky H asks: Ever heard of using a nitroglycerin patch for healing injuries? I have a friend with a nagging achilles injury that just got back from a sports therapy clinic. They are using nitro patches on the inflammed site, then will be doing concentric stretches/strengthening of the area, all to hopefully get more blood into the site to promote healing. Have you heard of this? What would be potential side effects? Do you think it would be effective for just this type of injury, or might it potentially be useful for other injury site (namely ITBS on the knee). Mike Schrankel asks: What do you think of Low Volume/High Intensity weight training? One apparently reputable website (http://www.exrx.net/WeightTraining/LowVolumeTraining.html) goes to great lengths explaining that performing extra sets beyond one light warm-up and one heavy set of 8-12 reps yields only 0-5% more muscle growth. But most pros, including yourself recommend 3-5 sets. I've checked out your "Get Fit in 30 minutes or Less" (12/5/10) post, in which you recommend 5 sets. I like the short time commitment, but I'd like to do a wider variety of exercises with less sets if I can get decent results (i.e., more lean muscle, not "big and brawny") Lorna asks: why does it matter whether I burn fat or glycogen during my workout? I thought that if I am in deficit at the end of the day - fat will be used for energy - giving me a body fat loss. Whether I burn glycogen or fat - a deficit will mean fat stores reducing when it all balances out- will it not? Laurel asks: I have two questions.  1-Are there homeopathic or home remedies for Raynauds phenomena? 2- You tout magnesium, what do you think of epsom salts as a source? In my response to Laurel, I recommend the Future Health Now Encyclopedia (pictured right) and the Magnesium Flakes from Ancient Minerals. Jeff has a call-in question about soreness when getting started with weight training. In my response to Jeff, I recommend he listens to the first 5 episodes of the Get-Fit Guy's Quick & Dirty Tips Podcast Ralph Sanabria asks: Ben, I have a hard time running (more breathing). I've been told that I have athletic induced asthma. I've been told this because i have a hard time breathing during. and it sounds like wheezing. Is there anything that i can do to help with this? In my response to Ralph, I recommend oil of oregano. Cat asks: Do you know of any potentially harmful effects of chewing sugar-free gum? I am a student and find that chewing gum helps me to stay focused while I work, but it seems like I've developed sort of an addiction to it. Are there properties in sugarfree gum that could make it addictive and harmful to health? In my response to Cat, I mention "Spry" gum. Ryan asks: I recently read this article http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2011/02/california-deaths-after-lap-band-surgery-lead-to-lawsuits.html  about complications that are occurring with lap band surgeries. My sister is considering a lap band surgery and this article really concerns me! I thought you might find it interesting and would like your thoughts on this. -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! Cost is normally a primary objective, with convenience and ease of implementation a close second. In this interview with Portland Triathlon race director Jeff Henderson, you'll be introduced to the concept of "Green" events, and how to actually have a triathlon, marathon or athletic event without destroying the planet. Click here to visit the Portland Triathlon website. Here are some snippets: ...In all cases local providers are given preference over regional or national sources. The necessary triathlon infrastructure (swim buoys, bike racks, etc) has been created from recycled or used materials whenever possible. Participants are asked to carpool, take public transportation, or ride their bikes to the race, with incentives provided for doing so... ...The Freshwater Trust Portland Triathlon was the first triathlon in the country to staff its medical tent with naturopathic doctors. The National College of Naturopathic Medicine provided care while highlighting this city's unique educational institution... ...Local and sustainable extend to food, as well. Organic produce is used for aid stations and pre-race, and locally sourced food is served at the post-race meal. Recycling and composting are integral.... Also in this podcast: -Magnesium Oil update: I just started my weekly soak in a 1:1 mixture of aluminum free baking soda from the grocery store and the 100% absorbable magnesium flakes from Ancient Minerals. My body feels amazing, and my joint soreness and "stale" legs have almost completely disappeared. I am augmenting this with a spray of magnesium oil on both arms prior to my workout, which I can immediately feel surging through my body. Click here to visit the website where I got this stuff, and also listen into Podcast #45 for the interview with Dr. Mark Sircus, which talks about how magnesium works and why magnesium works. I am not in this to win...I am doing it to change my life.  So far we are doing just that..." Maleah "Hey Ben! So far so good on shape21 lean body challenge....and 'frankly, im shocked! I loveeeeee it thus far and im suprised at just how much its kickin my butt, In a good way of course!  I'M loving the nutrition, its gotten me to eat more adventurously. The foam roller has become my best friend; those sprint intervals are killer...thanks!" Em "I bought all the food, started working out a week ago (Tuesday) , a little hard to fit in schedule but trying and just love the menu! I have lost 8 lbs in 7 days and getting used to the workout.(had Jabba The Hut as role model before) and not getting in as much circuits per day as desired but working my  4 Am to 7 Pm schedule is sorta tough.( about half the circuits or rather, workouts when get home). I started at 243 and now at 235. I am 51 years old, 5'10" and not really fat but BP was 150/92 and now 136/91 so progress happening. Goal is  190 . The food is really great and my girlfriend will graduate Az School of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Tucson August so she knows all that herbal stuff and Tai Chi, Chi Gong, etc. She likes the menu when I cooked for her last weekend so I think  I am ALL in for the 63 days." Jay "I love all the strength training!  I love how it's short, tough, and always something new.  The book really explains each exercise well and the pictures make it easy to follow. I heart the Cinnamon-Banana shake... it's so delicious, especially on these hot days we've been having!  I also really enjoyed the homemade dressing for the strawberry spinach salad.  Yummy hummus recipe too...I'm proud of myself for taking my supplements regularly, I haven't always been consistent with that in the past.  Also, from a fitness standpoint, I've PR'd both races I've done since starting the challenge.  I feel like I'm healthier, stronger, and lighter." Jessi "My favorite exercise was the lunges and the overall routine workouts.  The workouts seemed to go fast and I was still very tired/sore at the end of them. My favorite food was the lettuce wraps but also want to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the menu.  Everything was good and relatively easy to prepare.  From my past eating habits I would not have guessed that I would have liked any of it...I was very happy with each meal.  I was most surprised that I stuck to it for a week.  I started the week at 203.4 and ended the week at 196.8 for a total loss of 6.6 pounds.  I have never lost that much in a week before.  I was most surprised by the fact that I was not starving and by about day 4 I did not have the huge ups and downs in blood sugar.  Even when I missed a meal for a while I did not feel like I was going to pass out and felt a lot more even throughout the day."
