For years I've supplemented 400 mg of Mg nightly based on Rhonda Patrick's recommendation. I always use a highly bioavailable form (e.g. Glycinate or Malate). Recently I've had some discussions with people online who brought to my attention that supplemental Mg *at best* provides like 15% elemental Mg (i.e. a 400 mg supplement gives you 50-60 mg Magnesium). I thought this was fine since I eat a paleo diet rich in fruits and vegetables, which presumably provide a few hundred milligrams of Mg, and I supplement LMNT; but some argue that with our modern soil situation plus anti-nutrients in other foods (not sure if that applies to Paleo people) means that our dietary Mg intake is effectively zero. My questions: 1) Can you get most of your Mg from food in a reasonably simple Paleo diet? 2) If supplementing, is 400 mg (The Rhonda Patrick recommendation; 50 mg elemental) Mg enough if you do (1)? 3) Can you supplement hundreds of milligrams of elemental Mg without shitting your pants? Keep up the good work. Charles Psoriasis Steve writes: Any evidence on any particular dietary solutions to help with psoriasis? I turned 50 and it hit me, mainly my right hand and right foot. Makes lifting difficult. Chalk, Wash, leather up with doc spartan and repeat. I am on a medication, lowest dose. Prefer not to use meds at all, it helps, keeps the tearing pain to an acceptable level to keep moving forward. Semaglutide Trevor writes: What's the deal with semaglutide? I've read that it slows down stomach emptying, but wonder what the health risks might be? I have a family member who legitimately needs to lose about 100 pounds. They have some orthopedic and neurological issues that make exercise pretty difficult right now. Some version of semaglutide seems pretty appealing right now, if just to get the weight loss ball rolling. Thanks to you both for your podcast. Supplements are meant to supplement a healthy lifestyle, not act as a bandaid to mitigate poor lifestyle choices. While choosing whole foods sources to get certain nutrients is ideal instead of supplements, sometimes we can't make the best choices due to our modern world or environment. In this episode, I share 6 supplements that I take daily for optimal health, the benefits of these supplements, my go-to brands, and how much I take daily. In this episode, I discuss: 01:30 - The critical role of sodium in our health, debunking of the misconception that excessive sodium leads to cardiovascular diseases 09:23 - The different types of magnesium salts and their specific advantages 13:18 - Creatine for muscle mass and brain health 15:15 - ION Gut Support, a unique supplement that is sourced from ancient soil and contains bacterial metabolites that can help with gut health and immunity. 20:09 - How bovine colostrum dramatically improves gut health, boosts immune support, and also improves exercise performance 23:30 - The nutritional benefits of beef organs and the importance of maintaining natural ratios when consuming organ supplements Learn more from Michael Kummer: Use code “primalshift” to save 15% on your order at https://shop.michaelkummer.com/ Website: https://michaelkummer.com/ Instagram: @mkummer82 Resources: Salt (Sodium) Sodium is just one of the minerals important for optimal electrolyte balance. This week's episode of Scrambling with Dylan Otto features San Jose State University Golfer Antonia Malate. Monterey area has always been known for their spectacular golf courses that everyone dreams of playing... Antonia Malate grew up playing them. Her golf journey got started with the help of her father always being there to help her get better and push her to achieve the goals she had set for herself. Malate's junior career consisted of playing in NCGA and JTNC events that had really good competition which helped her develop a great foundation. This allowed her to qualify for events like the IMG Junior Worlds, the U.S. Women's Amateur, and win the 2018 NCGA Women's Amateur! With this resume she decided to take it to the next level and started reaching out to colleges in the California area. She was really looking for a university that would trust/believe in her so that she could develop even more as a player. She committed to San Jose State University and is currently in her 5th year as a Spartan. She's looking to go out with a bang as this is her last semester of college golf and wants to spend as much time with her teammates who she dearly loves. Enjoy the show!
On this episode of Tee to Green hosts Jensen and Megan are joined by Antonia Malate. A grad student at San Jose State, Antonia has led her team to many historic moments. She shared stories on her experiences with the college recruiting process, her team's run at the NCAA Championship, and what college golf has taught her during her career! Tune in for a fun episode!

Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Ashley: I have a redundant or tortuous colon, as well as chronic constipation. I've done candida cleanses, treated leaky guy, but now also have hormone and thyroid issues. Any suggestions on how to deal with a physical issue? Rachel: Hi Dr. Cabral- I have listened to all your hair episodes. I have been having hair fall for the last few years and am young and trying to get to the root cause like you say. I have higher estrogen and test (plus DHT). I have normal TSH but my T4 and Free T4 are low. I am wondering if you might be able to review all the correct ranges for thyroid and hormones if you don't mind. I have pieced together most of the elements but would love a holistic review. Would you be so kind to do this? I know I am not alone on this and it is so hard to get to the bottom of it all. Thank you so much for all you do! Rachel Zoe: Hello, I was wondering if you could do a podcast for health care personel about reversing diabetes with dietary interventions. Maybe in regards to intermittent fasting, correct diet changes. How to avoid hypoglycemia in patients. Specifically I am a pharmacist looking to become a functional medicine pharmacist. I see many diabetic patients I want to try IF with but I do not want to run the risks of hypoglycemia. Thanks so much!! Zoe Alyssa: Hi Dr. Cabral, I wanted to get your thoughts on Bach Flower Remedies. Do you feel they “work”? Ryan: Hello Dr Cabral! Hope this finds you well. My question is supplementing certain electrolytes and getting panic, anxiety and a general out of body type sensation. Basically what seems to be happening to me is sometimes when I take some sea salt in mountain valley spring water I get these symptoms. This has been happening on and off for two years. I have changed salts but it doesn't seem to be the salt, it's me. It has happened the last few days while trying a new salt out. I won't name the company that makes it but it contains sodium chloride (1000mg), potassium chloride (200mg) and magnesium Malate (60mg). These are pretty good forms to my knowledge. But once again has happened with other products. And sometimes even equi life. It's usually when I'm drinking something though. What could this be from? I did neurotransmitter testing last year, everything was normal beside very high cortisol. My electrolytes were fairly balanced in a hair tissue test as well. I supplemented to correct any minor issues from that HTMA too. I am not sure what is causing the massive anxiety and panic feeling. Would love your feedback, thanks a lot! Joey: Hello Dr. Cabral, what do you think about the "Active EMF Protection Technology" and its claims to stop the body responding to EMF, by EMF being neutralised at a cell level. Is it a total scam? Different forms of magnesium: what is each one good for? - Dr. Jason Jones Elizabeth City NC, Chiropractor Magnesium is a vital nutrient needed for many processes in the body, including nerve function, blood sugar and pressure regulation, bone formation, and more. Magnesium is a macromineral along with sodium, phosphorus, calcium, chloride, potassium, and sulfur. You can obtain this mineral mainly by eating a healthy diet made up of a wide range of foods. However, studies have shown that a lot of people, especially those in the Western world, do not meet their magnesium needs with diet. Little wonder, health care providers might recommend a mineral supplement. More so, some people have health conditions that require them to take a mineral supplement. Different forms of magnesium There are at least 11 different forms of magnesium that can be taken in supplement form or found in food. However, specific types of magnesium are recommended for certain conditions. The different magnesium forms may be better for your needs than others. But, they have their pros and cons. Without much ado, let's take a look at the different forms of magnesium: Magnesium Citrate This is a very common form of magnesium used to treat and prevent magnesium deficiency. This magnesium form is bound with citric acid and has a natural laxative effect. It is sometimes used at higher doses to treat constipation and soften stool. Magnesium citrate often comes in powdery form, and it is mixed with a liquid and taken orally. The good thing is that it is one of the most absorbable and bioavailable forms of magnesium. Magnesium chloride Magnesium chloride is a salt that combines magnesium and chlorine. It is well absorbed in your digestive tract, a characteristic that makes it a great multi-purpose supplement. Magnesium chloride is often used to treat low magnesium levels, constipation, and heartburn. You can take this form of magnesium in capsule or tablet form. Some topical products that include this mineral, including ointments and lotions. Magnesium oxide Magnesium oxide is a magnesium salt mixed with oxygen. It is the active ingredient in the milk of magnesia – a common OTC medication for constipation relief. This magnesium form naturally forms a white, powdery substance and it is often sold in capsule or powder form. However, magnesium oxide is not typically used to treat or prevent magnesium deficiencies, as many studies show that it is poorly absorbed by the gut. Instead, this magnesium form is often used for short-term relief of uncomfortable digestive symptoms, such as indigestion, heartburn, and constipation. It is sometimes used to prevent and treat migraines. Magnesium lactate Magnesium lactate is a salt formed from a combination of magnesium and lactic acid. This magnesium form is naturally produced by your blood cells and muscles, and your digestive system absorbs it easily. This makes magnesium lactate an excellent option for people who need to take large doses since it is well tolerated than some other forms of magnesium. In other words, supplementing with magnesium lactate is a good way to replete a magnesium deficiency. It is also helpful for pain relief during a woman's menstrual cycle. Magnesium Aspartate This form of magnesium combines aspartic acid and magnesium to form a salt. It is one of the best in terms of absorbability. It is often combined with zinc to increase serum testosterone levels. Magnesium taurate This form of magnesium contains the amino acid taurine. Research shows that taking an adequate amount of magnesium and taurine plays an important role in regulating blood sugar. Magnesium taurate also helps to prevent high blood pressure. Some studies also show that it helps to reduce hypertension. Other forms of magnesium that may be better for your needs include: Magnesium malate Magnesium L-Threonate Magnesium Sulfate Magnesium Orotate Magnesium Glycinate Choosing the right form of magnesium should be based on why you need them and how much you already get through your diet. However, it is important to speak with your doctor before trying any supplement. You can consult Dr. Jason Jones in our chiropractic office at Elizabeth City, NC, to learn more about different forms of magnesium that works for different conditions, such as heartburn, indigestion, constipation, and many others.

Citrulline Malate, an emerging supplement in the scientific literature with an overall positive publishing record. More and more these days, you’ll see it alongside the more scientifically established usual suspects like creatine and caffeine in multi-ingredient mixes. But what exactly is it? What’s Citrulline? What’s malate? What do they do? How do they work? What do we know, and what is yet to be determined? In this episode, we're joined by returning guests Ben Esgro and Eric Trexler to answer these questions. Ben is a registered dietitian with two master's degrees, one in sports nutrition and one in pharmaceutical chemistry, and he’s been a supplement formulator and supplement company owner for over a decade. Dr. Eric Trexler actually did his Ph.D. dissertation on Citrulline, so it’s safe to say we have probably the most informed duo on the topic in podcast history. So sit back, learn, and enjoy!

Magnesium deficiency is an obstacle to the chelation of toxins. Magnesium Disodium versions of EDTA (Magnesium Disodium EDTA (C10H12MgN2Na2O8)), the most widely recognized chelation agent for heavy metals and certain minerals, can be easily found in medical literature and needs no introduction here (1). This EDTA stands as proof of magnesium's role in the synergy of chelation in the human body. How acids and metals or certain mineral salts react outside of the body, by mixing industrially produced acids to specific metals to produce combined forms, should not be confused with the “seemingly identical” process mirrored within the living human body.In the living body, enzymes play a key role in these interactions. Magnesium is involved in all of these interactions through the enzymes' own dependence on magnesium for a more perfect transformation, catalyzation, chelation or conjugation. Magnesium is an essential factor for enzyme efficiency. Magnesium is also a natural calcium channel blocker, reducing the cell's rigidity.
Gorilla Mode Nitric Pre-Workout is the most potent and comprehensive stimulant free pre-workout on the market in ALL aspects. All angles of saturating the muscle with blood and hydration have been addressed in this formula and are quite literally maxed out. https://youtu.be/iFlmwQXBs6U Gorilla Mode Nitric Supplement Facts Per Full Daily Dose: L-Citrulline – 10,000 mg Creatine Monohydrate – 5000 mg Betaine Anhydrous – 4000 mg GlycerPump™ (65% Glycerol Powder) – 4000 mg Malic Acid – 3000 mg Agmatine Sulfate – 1500 mg Nitrosigine® (inositol-stabilized arginine silicate) – 1500 mg Sodium Nitrate – 1500 mg VasoDrive-AP® (isoleucyl-prolyl-proline (IPP) and valyl-prolyl-proline (VPP) isolated from hydrolyzed milk casein) – 254 mg Gorilla Mode Nitric Vs. Other Pre-Workouts On The Market This is the most maxed out stimulant free pre-workout formula on the market in all aspects. It is also the most comprehensive formula that targets nitric oxide (NO), vasodilation and intracellular hyper-hydration from multiple angles, while maintaining top end dosages across all of those pathways. We completely saturate the traditional Arginine–eNOS–nitric oxide (NO) pathway with a massive 10 gram dose of L-Citrulline, 1.5 grams of Nitrosigine and 1.5 grams of Agmatine Sulfate. The often neglected nitrate–nitrite–nitric oxide (NO) pathway is also topped out with a 1500 mg dose of Sodium Nitrate. A high level of intracellular hyper-hydration is achieved with 5 grams of Creatine Monohydrate, 4 grams of Glycerpump and 4 grams of Betaine Anhydrous. We also addressed the enzyme angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) with VasoDrive-AP®, which acts as an ACE inhibitor and significantly increases vasodilation. Finally, we have 3 grams of Malic Acid added in on top of the 10 grams of pure L-Citrulline to act as a Krebs cycle intermediary and counter lactic acid buildup during training. Some of these pathways are so maxed out that we could have easily just chosen one of them and sold the product for $39.99 and still had one of the most potent pre-workouts in the industry. Instead, I packed it all into one absurd product that clocks in with over 30 grams of efficacious active ingredients per full dose. It was incredibly expensive to create, but I am very happy with how it turned out, and I am not exaggerating when I say that this pre-workout is absolutely unmatched. Basically, I just included exactly what I would want to see in a stimulant free pre-workout, even at the obvious detriment of our margins. This product is even more potent than Gorilla Mode when it comes to pure pump and performance. The full daily dose is 2 scoops. Even a half dose (1 scoop) is still far more potent than the majority of other pre-workouts out there at their max dosages. This is another product I wanted to be head and shoulders, clear as day, superior to everything else in the industry. Just like in my description of how Gorilla Mode stacks up to other products in this industry, we can actually back up why our product is better than the rest. When (insert fitness influencer name here) launches their own supplement line, they will regurgitate the same story about how their products are effectively dosed, only use the highest quality ingredients, blah blah blah. They don't even know what they're selling half the time, let alone what combinations of ingredients work synergistically, or how to dose a product properly. They employ others to manufacture their products, or use a pre-made formula their manufacturer uses for every company where they just slap a different label on it and sell it for a huge margin. At the end of the day, most fitness influencers have no idea what goes into making an effective product. They don't know how their products work, they probably wouldn’t even use them if they didn’t sell them, they didn't formulate them, and they have to pay the overhead involved with having a team under them who is responsible for all of that. As you’ve already experienced with Gorilla Mode and Gorilla Mind Nootropics, it is me formulating the products, and they work because I actually put in them what I would want in a product and buy myself if I didn’t have a company. The same applies with Gorilla Mode Nitric. If I didn’t have this product, for an effective stim-free pre-workout I would probably be mixing up 6000-10,000 mg of L-Citrulline for vasodilation (with 6000 mg being the bare minimum of pure L-Citrulline, not Citrulline Malate, and would be dependent on my budget at the time), a saturation dose of Creatine Monohydrate (5000 mg), 3000-4000 mg of Glycerpump to hyper-hydrate the muscle with water, and maybe a quarter teaspoon of Himalayan Pink Salt. The fact that a significant amount of supplement companies will skimp out on Creatine Monohydrate and either not include it at all, or only include a subpar dosage, really sheds light on how scammy this industry can be. That is the cheapest ingredient they could easily dose properly, and even that they won't shell out the money for in their formulas. It’s not hard to put 5 grams of Creatine in a pre-workout, and it is actually pretty cheap to put in there. The reason is, they want you to go buy their creatine product, and will intentionally manipulate their ingredient profile to be deficient in several areas to make you buy more stuff from them. With my products, everything is turnkey. You don’t need to go buy a separate Creatine product from us, you don’t need to stack extra stims on top of our stim-based products, you don’t need to go buy something else to get the max dose of a certain ingredient in any of our formulas, everything you need is in each product at an efficacious dosage. Flavor And Mixability The flavor we chose to start with for Nitric was Mango Peach as it is a more mainstream appealing flavor than Tiger's Blood. Tiger's Blood and a fruit punch flavor will probably be next in the pipeline of flavor releases. Mango Peach is easily a 9 or 10/10 flavor, even for the pickiest of tongues. As there’s such a high concentration of ingredients in this formula we were really happy with how the flavor systems turned out. We were expecting something this potent to be nearly impossible to avoid tasting like ass. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case. It also mixes very well considering the concentration of L-Citrulline, GlycerPump, and all of the other ingredients in this product. There is some grittiness, but that just comes with the territory with putting out a 35 gram serving size product with 10 grams of L-Citrulline and 4 grams of Glycerpump. You will just have to use a bit more water than you would with your standard pre-workout because there are simply more active ingredients in this product that will require more liquid to mix well. How To Dose Gorilla Mode Nitric Mix 1-2 scoops of Gorilla Mode Nitric in 12-14 ounces of water and consume 30 minutes prior to training. Vary the amount of water to achieve your desired flavor level. First time users should begin use with 1/2-1 scoop or less to evaluate tolerance. DO NOT EXCEED 2 SCOOPS IN ANY 24 HOUR PERIOD. Gorilla Mode Nitric Ingredients Breakdown L-Citrulline – 10,000 mg L-Citrulline is the most effective supplement you can use to boost nitric oxide (NO) in the body. Why Nitric Oxide (NO) Is Important Nitric oxide (NO) is made naturally in our bodies and plays a significant role in cardiovascular health. It dilates blood vessels (vasodilation), which lowers blood pressure and increases oxygen in the blood. https://youtu.be/EoYhQIHmKoE Nitric oxide (NO) acts as a messenger to signal blood vessels to dilate, or contract and relax. Sufficient nitric oxide is needed to signal blood vessels to contract or relax to ensure blood is able to flow to and from the heart effectively. Nitric oxide production decreases with age, consequently reducing the elasticity of the cardiovascular system, and impairing the body's ability to ensure sufficient amounts of oxygenated blood are reaching vital organs. Eating enough nitrates and/or supplementing with nitric oxide precursors is very important to ensure that your cardiovascular system maintains optimized function as you get older. In addition, maintaining optimal nitric oxide levels will make you more vascular, allow you to get a much better pump, increase muscle volume, enhance the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to working muscles, support recovery and improve overall physical performance. Increased Muscular Endurance Citrulline has also shown to significantly increase muscular endurance, with one study finding that compared to placebo, a single 8000 mg dose of Citrulline Malate increased the number of reps performed per set, on every set after set 2 [R]. The impact Citrulline had on performance increased the more sets were performed. During the last set performed, the group that took Citrulline had a 52.92% increase in the number of reps they could perform relative to placebo. It also decreased muscle soreness by 40% at 24 and 48 hours after the training session compared to placebo. Effect On Body Composition There isn’t much data on the direct effect Citrulline has on muscle growth and fat loss in humans. However, a rodent model assessed the effect Citrulline had on body composition and found that 20 month old rats that were given a diet that included the human equivalent dose of 160 mg/kg per day for 12 weeks had 13% less body fat and 9% more lean body mass relative to the rats fed a standard diet without Citrulline supplementation [R]. Visceral fat mass was also reduced by 32%. The mortality rate of the rats taking Citrulline was 0%, while the standard diet fed rats had a mortality rate of 20%. L-Citrulline is one of the most promising supplements on the market and has significantly more upside above and beyond its increase in vascularity and pumps in the gym. The Maximum Effective Dose Of L-Citrulline Citrulline is found in watermelons. You would need to eat 1.5 kg of watermelon every day to get 3 grams of L-Citrulline though, which is the minimum effective dose [R]. To get the maximum effective dose of L-Citrulline from your diet, you would need to eat 5.0 kg of watermelon per day to get 10 grams (10,000 mg) of L-Citrulline [R]. Obviously, nobody is going to eat that much watermelon, nor is it a good idea to begin with in my opinion when there are far better ways to allocate your macronutrient/micronutrient intake allotments. This is why L-Citrulline supplementation could actually be worthwhile. The Problem With Citrulline Malate In The Supplement Industry While L-Citrulline is a great supplement to have in your daily regimen, there is a red flag around L-Citrulline supplementation that you need to know about. I'm sure you've seen that some supplements have L-Citrulline in them, and some have Citrulline Malate. Some even say "L-Citrulline Malate". This is a cheap trick companies use to deceive customers. Citrulline Malate is composed of 50% Malic Acid, unless the ratio states otherwise. Authentic Citrulline Malate is produced by chemically bonding free-form L-Citrulline to DL-Malic Acid. When L-Citrulline is chemically bonded to DL-Malic Acid, the end result is Citrulline Malate, which has unique properties. But the problem with the Citrulline Malate in the supplement industry is that it doesn't have this chemical reaction. It's just Citrulline mixed with malic acid in a big mixing vat in the manufacturing facility. There is no chemical bond like there should be to create authentic Citrulline Malate. It's just the two ingredients being mixed together in a cheap blend, and it's sold as "Citrulline Malate", or "L-Citrulline Malate". The reality is that it's just Citrulline stirred up with malic acid. While this isn't a huge deal in itself, the problem lies in the labeling practices companies use to artificially inflate the perceived potency of their product. 6-8 grams is seen as the max clinically proven efficacious dosage in the supplement industry in general. At least, that's what companies will tell you in their marketing. First of all, we already know that the actual maximum efficacious dosage of L-Citrulline is 10 grams per day [R]. In addition, the main issue is that the "L-Citrulline" in their product is actually as low as half of the stated label claim. As mentioned, Citrulline Malate is just a mixture of Citrulline and malic acid. Somehow, companies are getting away with labeling their products with the chemically bonded form Citrulline Malate and claiming they have 6-8 grams per serving in their pre-workout, when they actually just have 3-4 grams of Citrulline and 3-4 grams of malic acid per serving. Instead of labeling the following: L-Citrulline - 3 grams Malic Acid - 3 grams These companies are labeling their products like this: Citrulline Malate - 6 grams Or like this: L-Citrulline Malate - 6 grams Making you think you are getting a high dose, when in reality you are getting the bare minimum efficacious dose per serving of 3 grams. Sometimes, companies will tweak the ratio to be a bit more in favor of a higher Citrulline content relative to malic acid, but this is rarely higher than a 2:1 ratio. So, if you see the following: Citrulline Malate (2:1) - 6 grams That just means that the company has 4 grams of L-Citrulline and 2 grams of malic acid per serving. This is the exact manufacturing process involved in producing the L-Citrulline and "Citrulline Malate" you get in pre-workouts in the supplement industry: As you can see, the Citrulline Malate manufacturing flowchart on the right literally just says, "mix". If this was authentic Citrulline Malate, you wouldn't need to mix L-Citrulline with malic acid, it would be chemically bonded together by the end of the manufacturing process. You're not really getting what you're paying for, and most don't realize this is a tactic in the industry to get better margins and artificially inflate a products perceived efficacy. Even if a pre-workout had what on paper appears to be a top end efficacious dose of 8 grams per serving, how much L-Citrulline are you actually getting out of that serving? 4-6 grams at most. I have yet to see a pre-workout formula actually hit a top end L-Citrulline dosage, and of the ones that get close, they use Citrulline Malate to inflate their label. In addition, even if you had the bonded version (which supplements don't), reacted Citrulline Malate will break apart into L-Citrulline and malic acid right away after its mixed in water. It's all just a trick to artificially inflate a products perceived potency on a label, as each ingredient should be listed separately. Most supplements have malic acid anyways in the "other ingredients" section, which is still an active ingredient that does have some potential performance benefits that you would get from the “Malate” portion of Citrulline Malate. L-Citrulline and malic acid work via a different mechanism of action. Citrulline bypasses the liver and gets converted to arginine, which increases NO levels in the body. Malic acid is a Krebs cycle intermediary that counters lactic acid buildup. How much do you need of each though? With Citrulline, we know where the top end data lies. Malic acid, we don't. There is research on Citrulline and Citrulline Malate, but not much data on supplementing with malic acid to replenish depleted levels as a Krebs cycle intermediary. I don't think we can make a generalized overview on how effective the malic acid component was in the Citrulline Malate research either because we can't determine if the results were derived from the malic acid, the L-Citrulline, or both. Considering this, I included an additional 3000 mg of malic acid separately in the Gorilla Mode Nitric formula as an active ingredient in the main ingredients panel. As mentioned, malic acid is most commonly used as a filler in supplements, and will be found in small amounts in many product "other ingredients" sections. The only other time it is used is by companies artificially inflating their perceived L-Citrulline dosage via Citrulline Malate. No companies are including a maxed out dose of pure L-Citrulline as well as malic acid separetely though. It is always a subpar amount of each. So, if there is some sort of performance enhancing benefit to having a high dose of malic acid, you are also getting it via Nitric on top of the maximum efficacious 10,000 mg dose of pure L-Citrulline. At the end of the day, for vasodilation you should concern yourself with is how much pure L-Citrulline is in your pre-workout supplement. I have yet to see a product with more than 6000 mg of PURE L-Citrulline. I have only seen a handful of products with 6 grams of L-Citrulline, and another handful of products with 8 grams of Citrulline Malate (which only yields 4-5 grams of actual L-Citrulline, with the remainder as malic acid). I put 10 grams of PURE L-Citrulline in Gorilla Mode Nitric, as well as 3 grams of malic acid separately, so you can get the full benefits of the max dosage of each ingredient and transparently see exactly what you are actually getting in the product. Even if you decide to only use a half dose of this product you will still get 5000 mg of pure L-Citrulline, and the formula is still top notch even when cut in half. Citrulline Vs Arginine One of the most well-known pump ingredients is Arginine. The problem with L-Arginine is that it is very ineffective at increasing Nitric Oxide synthesis. Logically, you would assume that taking Arginine would be the most effective way to increase Arginine levels in the body. However, this is not the case. Oral L-Arginine is taken up and metabolized by the liver so much that it does not actually effectively increase Arginine levels, and it may even be unsafe to use because of how much excessive urea it yields [R]. L-Citrulline bypasses the liver and passes freely to the kidneys where it is metabolized to Arginine [R]. The most effective supplement that can be used to increase Arginine levels in the body to improve cardiovascular and metabolic health outcomes is L-Citrulline [R]. L-Citrulline supplementation has shown to lower blood pressure and provide atherogenic-endothelial protection [R]. When it comes to NO precursors that significantly improve pumps, nothing beats an efficacious dose of pure L-Citrulline. Creatine Monohydrate – 5000 mg Creatine is the best studied and most effective performance enhancing supplement outside of exogenous hormones and drugs. Creatine’s Effect On Muscle Size And Strength Supplementing with creatine has shown time and time again to significantly improve strength, power output and muscle size [R]. Creatine’s effect on strength is facilitated by increasing the body’s stores of phosphocreatine, which is then used during high intensity exercise to produce ATP [R, R]. Creatine’s effect on muscle size is facilitated by drawing water into the muscle via osmosis, consequently increasing body weight and muscle size. In addition, with the increased strength creatine provides, heavier weights can be used in the gym which provide more stimulus for growth, consequently increasing muscle accrual in the long-term. Creatine supplementation also appears to increase the number of myonuclei that satellite cells will donate to damaged muscle fibers, which increases the potential for growth of those fibers [R]. A typical omnivorous diet provides about 1 gram of creatine per day, which isn’t enough to get the benefits you would from supplementation, and also isn’t nearly enough to support health status and methylation in those with genetic polymorphisms. Creatine’s Effect On Methylation And Health Status About 1 gram of creatine is endogenously produced in the body naturally in young healthy adults [R]. Most of the human body's total creatine and phosphocreatine stores are found in skeletal muscle, while the remainder is distributed in the blood, brain, and other tissues [R]. While there are a host of processes in the body that rely on creatine to be carried out optimally (and are often completely neglected), one of the most notable functions of creatine is neurological support [R]. In addition, the endogenous synthesis of creatine relies on a process called methylation. Arginine and Glycine are combined by an enzyme to form guanidinoacetate, which is then methylated into creatine. The problem is that this process is dependent on a mechanism of action that is commonly inhibited in the general population via endogenous Arginine deficiency, Glycine deficiency, or MTHFR polymorphisms. The MTHFR gene codes for an enzyme called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase or MTHFR. This enzyme is needed for the production of DNA and methylation pathways that are essential for all bodily functions. Genetic variations in this gene results in reduced activity of the enzyme and has been associated with cardiovascular disease, neurological defects, some forms of cancer, and a myriad of other diseases and disorders [R, R]. Personally, I am homozygous for C677T of MTHFR, which results in a 80-90% decrease in my efficiency in processing folic acid. The direct reflection of that in blood biomarkers can be high homocysteine and low B12 and folate levels. I determined this via a simple 23andMe genetics test. Upwards of 45% of your body’s methylation demands are used to synthesize creatine. For someone with a MTHFR polymorphism, you can put a significant amount of stress on your methylation pathway and deplete far more methyl groups than you should be just to create the 1 gram per day that you endogenously synthesize. We lose up to 2-3 grams of creatine per day because it converts to creatinine and is then passed out of the body via urine. As you can see, adequate replenishment of creatine is probably not being accomplished if you aren’t consistently eating a fair bit of meat or fish. And for those with impaired methylation pathways, supplementing with exogenous creatine is likely the only way creatine replenishment can be achieved. One study found that supplementing with 5 grams of creatine per day lowered plasma homocysteine levels by almost 50% in the subject who is homozygous for C677T of MTHFR [R]. Creatine supplementation can significantly lower the body’s demands for methylation and prevent the depletion of methyl groups. This is why I personally supplement with 5 grams of creatine per day. Do You Need To Cycle Off Of Creatine? No, you do not need to cycle off of creatine. Your body does not get used to it, and long-term use has shown to be safe in healthy adults [R]. Betaine Anhydrous – 4000 mg Betaine, also called Trimethylglycine, acts as a methyl donor and an osmolyte in the body. Earlier in the creatine breakdown, I briefly outlined the importance of having a sufficient amount of methyl donors available for methylation processes in the body, including the endogenous synthesis of creatine. For some individuals (depending on PEMT gene variations) Betaine can substitute for folate and B12 in the regeneration of methionine and can be choline sparing via this mechanism. It can also provide additional needed methyl donors when over-depletion occurs in genetically predisposed individuals that do not supplement with creatine, or have other deficiencies. As an osmolyte, Betaine helps balance fluid levels inside and outside of cells. The main reason I included Betaine in this formula is for its ability to induce intracellular hyper-hydration. By improving hydration status in cells, Betaine increases the pump you get in the gym, and can help prevent dehydration during exercise. Research has also shown that Betaine supplementation may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, as well as improve digestion and liver function [R, R, R, R]. In a performance enhancing context, Betaine supplementation has also shown to increase power, endurance, muscle growth and fat loss [R, R, R]. How significant will this effect on body composition be in practical application? Negligible in my honest opinion, but the enhanced pump made this ingredient worthwhile to add into the formula. GlycerPump™ (65% Glycerol Powder) – 4000 mg Glycerol significantly enhances pumps and performance by hyper-hydrating the muscle with water. Glycerol’s Effect On Hydration, Pumps And Endurance If you drink a lot of water with nothing else in hopes of hyper-hydrating your muscles, the fall in osmolarity in your body stimulates the kidneys to remove most of the excess water within an hour. If you add glycerol to the water, this prevents the drop in osmolarity and can extend the hyper-hydration of your muscles by up to four hours. By adding Glycerol to your pre-workout, you can hold upwards of an extra liter of water via this hyper-hydrating effect. Hydration is one of the most critical factors when it comes to performance. Aside from massive pumps, Glycerol use has shown to increase endurance by as much as 24%, as well as improve aerobic and anaerobic power and performance [R, R]. Only a 2% loss in fluids can result in as much as a 20% decrease in exercise performance. GlycerPump™ Vs Other Forms Of Glycerol We chose the trademarked GlycerPump because it doesn’t clump up nearly as much as other forms of Glycerol powder and it’s more stable. Glycerol is normally a liquid at standard temperature and pressure, and many supplement companies have attempted to create a powder form of Glycerol that is stable. Glycerol products get clumpy, have horrible viscosity and have a short shelf life. Because of this, most companies avoid this ingredient entirely, as it can cause severe clumping within just a couple months of being manufactured. Regular glycerol containing products only yield as low as 10% glycerol, which makes them ineffective, and higher yielding glycerol products can be unstable within complex formulas like ours and result in a clumpy product, or complete product failure. GlycerPump™ is created using unique spray drying technology, yielding a stable powder form of glycerol standardized to 65%. It is MUCH better than other alternatives and won't result in the powder turning into a rock. Keep in mind, while it is manageable, this is not a clump-free product, and there’s nothing I could do about that if I wanted to include the high concentration of ingredients that I did in Gorilla Mode Nitric. Store Gorilla Mode Nitric in a cool dry place, and if it clumps, that’s just what comes with the territory with a product dosed like this. If it clumps, just get out a knife or spoon and chop it up, and it will still mix fine once it hits the water in your cup. Agmatine Sulfate – 1500 mg Agmatine has shown to induce NO production via the same processes as arginine, but does it far more effectively [R]. This results in even bigger pumps in the gym and improved overall performance. Agmatine has also shown to be neuroprotective against excitotoxicity and stroke, and also has anti-anxiety and anti-depressant effects that may enhance state of well-being and mood elevation with supplementation. Agmatine has also shown to manipulate pain receptors, which may result in an increased pain tolerance during intense training. Agmatine is a very misunderstood compound and is believed by some to antagonize other vasodilators. Agmatine works in a more selective way than other vasodilators, as it only increases one of the three Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) isoforms. It also decreases the other two NOS isoforms, which is where the hypothesis about it being vasoconstricting was raised as a legitimate concern. The three NOS isoforms include iNOS, nNOS and eNOS. They each play their own role in certain tissues to regulate vasodilation. iNOS (inducible) produces high concentrations of NO via an immune system response to kill harmful bacteria. In excess, iNOS can be inflammatory. nNOS (neuronal) regulates neurological health and facilitates communication in the brain across neurons. In excess, nNOS can inhibit the growth and repair of neurons. eNOS (endothelial) facilitates vasodilation in the lining of blood vessels to improve blood flow. eNOS is the main isoform that most are familiar with that increases blood flow and lowers blood pressure. It is also the main isoform that facilitates massive pumps in the gym. While NO is great for the gym and vascular health, it can be inflammatory in excess. NO production by eNOS has shown to play a protective role in cerebral ischemia by maintaining vascular permeability, whereas NO derived from nNOS and iNOS is neurotoxic and can enhance the neuronal damage occurring in ischemia [R]. This is where the selective activity of Agmatine shines, as data suggests that Agmatine's mechanism of action is facilitated by inhibiting iNOS and nNOS and increasing eNOS [R, R]. Agmatine has shown to selectively increase eNOS levels while simultaneously decreasing iNOS and MMP-9 protein expression [R, R]. Anecdotally, Agmatine does not seem to inhibit any of the positive effects of L-Citrulline or other vasodilators. On the contrary, it seems to complement other "pump" compounds very effectively. On paper, Agmatine sounds like the perfect ancillary compound to add to a pre-workout as it increases expression of the NOS isoform we want, while simultaneously inhibiting the isoforms that can be more inflammatory in excess. Nitrosigine® (inositol-stabilized arginine silicate) – 1500 mg Nitrosigine got some hype behind it when independent researchers from the University of Arkansas presented data suggesting that 1500 mg of Nitrosigine was almost as effective as 8000 mg of Citrulline Malate 2:1 (5333.33 mg L-Citrulline and 2666.66 mg Malic Acid) at increasing flow mediated dilation (FMD) [R]. FMD refers to dilation of an artery when blood flow increases in that artery. Because the primary cause of FMD is release of nitric oxide by endothelial cells, we can use FMD as a proxy for NO levels. To circumvent the lackluster efficacy of plain oral Arginine, Nutrition 21 (the developers of Nitrosigine) created a complex of bonded arginine and silicon. The inositol acts as a stabilizer and increases the bioavailability of the complex, consequently resulting in a potent NO boosting compound. Remember that the main issue with Arginine is poor bioavailability. The inositol stabilizer helps circumvent that issue [R]. Unlike plain Arginine, Inositol-stabilized Arginine silicate (Nitrosigine) has shown to kick in within 15 minutes and elevate blood Arginine levels for up to six hours after ingestion [R, R]. Nitrosigine has some impressive data reinforcing its efficacy, and it is purported to be much more effective milligram for milligram than other common vasodilators at increasing NO levels. On top of the increase in vasodilation and pumps, the developers claim that after a single dose Nitrosigine can increase mental acuity and focus by 33% within 15 minutes, with a compounding effect over time. In addition, they claim that Nitrosigine supports enhanced recovery by reducing markers of muscle damage [R]. Nitrosigine Vs. L-Citrulline Vs. Agmatine Sulfate In Vitro An in vitro study was designed by Nutrition 21 to compare the cellular production of NO of several sports nutrition ingredients. These ingredients included Nitrosigine, L-Arginine, L-Arginine AKG, L-Citrulline, Citrulline Malate and Agmatine Sulfate. Nitrosigine was dosed at a concentration of 1.0 g/L. Cell culture concentrations of the other compounds were dosed relative to a 1500 mg dose of Nitrosigine using the following doses: L-Arginine - 1500 mg L-Arginine AKG - 4000 mg L-Citrulline - 3000 mg L-Citrulline Malate - 3000 mg Agmatine Sulfate - 1000 mg As NO is unstable and rapidly converts to nitrites or nitrates, nitrite levels were measured as a proxy for NO production. At the doses used in this study, Nitrosigine significantly increased NO production over each of the five other compounds tested. There was a greater than 5X increase in NO production with Nitrosigine compared to the other tested vasodilators. In addition, of the compounds tested, only Nitrosigine significantly increased NO production versus control. While this looks very impressive for Nitrosigine, you have to consider that this is an in vitro study conducted by Nutrition 21 themselves. The results basically indicate that every single clinically proven vasodilator that we know works is useless as it couldn't increase NO production above control, meanwhile Nitrosigine somehow cranked it through the roof over 5x higher than the rest. While the results are certainly interesting, I would take this data with a grain of salt. Nitrosigine Vs. Citrulline Malate - Vasodilation Study On Young Adults Unlike the in vitro study comparing Nitrosigine to Citrulline Malate, another study in 2019 was apparently conducted independently from the company without their knowledge whatsoever [R]. This study was conducted on young, healthy, physically active adults, and provides more acceptable parameters for us to take seriously when it comes to evaluating Nitrosigine's efficacy in humans relative to a decent dose of the most widely used vasodilator in the industry, Citrulline Malate (assuming that the study was actually unbiased as is implied) [R]. 16 healthy young men and 8 healthy young women participated in the study. Each subject either received 1500 mg of Nitrosigine, 8000 mg of Citrulline Malate 2:1, or dextrose placebo. Keep in mind, this is Citrulline Malate 2:1, so the subjects are only actually getting 5333.33 mg of L-Citrulline. The study was randomized, double-blind, within-subjects design where participants reported for three trials, each preceded by a 7-day washout period. Baseline flow mediated dilation (FMD) measurement was obtained for each visit, followed by consumption of one clinical dose Citrulline Malate (8 grams), Nitrosigine (1.5 grams), or dextrose placebo (8 g). Following a 60-min digestion period, FMD was repeated. Supplementation order was randomized controlling for potential order effects. Basically, the subjects would show up, get their FMD evaluated, take one of the three options, and then get their FMD checked again to see how well the random compound they ingested increased their NO production. They would then take a week off, and come back and repeat, where they would then receive one of the remaining two compounds, with the same measurement process. This would be followed by another week off, and then a third visit where the subjects would receive whatever the third ingredient was that they hadn't yet tried, and the same measurement process was conducted. Nobody knew what they were ingesting during each trip, but by the end of the experiment every single subject had tried each ingredient, and their vasodilation response was evaluated for comparisons. Expectedly, Citrulline Malate and Nitrosigine yielded a greater improvement in FMD response than placebo. Citrulline Malate increased FMD by 34%. Nitrosigine increased FMD by 31%. Placebo decreased FMD by 2%. Allometric scaling of the FMD values was required afterwards to adjust the results to account for the body size of males relative to females. After allometric scaling of the FMD values, Citrulline Malate was shown to increase FMD by 25%, Nitrosigine increased FMD by 23%, and placebo increased FMD by 0.6%. Clearly Citrulline Malate isn't as useless as the Nutrition 21 funded in vitro data would lead you to believe. The results from this study suggest that the clinically efficacious 1500 mg dose of Nitrosigine is almost equally effective to 5333.33 mg of L-Citrulline mixed with 2666.66 mg of Malic Acid. Clearly Nitrosigine has a lot of promise as a pre-workout ingredient, which is why I included it in our formula alongside the massive dosages of other potent vasodilators we already have. Every single effective vasodilator we felt was worthwhile is in here at topped out dosages. While it would be nice if there was data we could refer to evaluating if there is a synergy between Nitrosigine and Citrulline, or Nitrosigine and Agmatine, regardless if the end result is 1+1 = 2 or if it's 1+1 = 3, my goal was to make sure this formula was air tight and ensure you are getting the maximum possible performance enhancing benefit from each and every ingredient. Sodium Nitrate – 1500 mg Sodium is one of the most critical and overlooked components of a diet designed to optimize exercise performance. But, keep in mind, you’re not going to get enough sodium in a pre-workout without it tasting terrible. Other companies will put a tiny dose of sodium in their product and then claim you will get all of the benefits of it. Personally, I just toss and wash a quarter teaspoon of a high quality salt 30 minutes pre-workout with Gorilla Mode or Gorilla Mode Nitric, and I take another quarter teaspoon with my post-workout drink. The reason I included sodium nitrate in Gorilla Mode Nitric is not for the sodium, it is for the nitrates. The nitrate–nitrite–nitric oxide (NO) pathway is a series of oxygen-independent and NO synthase–independent single-electron transfer reactions that ultimately facilitate vasodilation. The traditional Arginine–eNOS–nitric oxide (NO) pathway is what most NO precursors focus on. The nitrate–nitrite–nitric oxide (NO) pathway often goes completely neglected though, and is another pathway we can leverage to amplify NO levels to an even greater level. Nitrates found in food can be converted into nitrites in the body, and then reduced to NO via nitrite reductase [R]. Several studies have shown that nitrate supplementation can increase plasma nitrite concentrations, and consequently Nitric Oxide, which then enhances pumps, endurance, and all of the other benefits we use NO precursors for [R]. Nitrate Dosage - Sodium Nitrate Vs. Beet Root Powder Pre-Workouts Beet root is a very popular ingredient that has started to get a lot of attention over the past few years. The reason why beet root works is because it is a densely concentrated source of nitrates. However, despite it being densely concentrated relative to other foods, beet root still only contains 1-2 percent of nitrates per gram of raw material. This would require you to ingest an absurdly high amount of beet root to get the same amount of nitrates that you can get from the 1500 mg of sodium nitrate in Gorilla Mode Nitric. To put it in perspective, your standard beet root powder pre-workout supplement has around 4.3 grams of Beet root juice powder in it. The amount of nitrates in that 4.3 grams is about 43 mg. That means that you would need to chug the entire tub at one time to get the same amount of nitrate as you would get out of a 1500 mg dose of sodium nitrate. There is no feasible way to get a high dose of nitrates from beet root powder without ingesting massive quantities far higher than what you would get in a dietary supplement. By weight, sodium nitrate is the most highly concentrated source of nitrates among any dietary ingredient. Nitrates comprise 73 percent of the total weight of sodium nitrate [R]. The optimal dosage of nitrate supplementation appears to be between 6.4-12.8 mg/kg [R]. That equates to the following dosage protocols: 440-870 mg for a 150 lb person 580-1,160 mg for a 200 lb person 730-1,450 mg for a 250 lb person For every gram of sodium nitrate, 730 mg is from nitrate. The 1.5 grams of sodium nitrate in Gorilla Mode Nitric yields 1095 mg of nitrate. There are other nitrate based supplements in the industry like Arginine Nitrate, Creatine Nitrate, Betaine Nitrate that operate via this same nitrate–nitrite–nitric oxide (NO) pathway, however, none of them have as high of a nitrate composition gram for gram as Sodium Nitrate does. VasoDrive-AP® (isoleucyl-prolyl-proline (IPP) and valyl-prolyl-proline (VPP) isolated from hydrolyzed milk casein) – 254 mg VasoDrive-AP consists of 2 lactotripeptides: isoleucyl-prolyl-proline (IPP) and valyl-prolyl-proline (VPP) which are clinically proven to inhibit Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) and significantly increases vasodilation. Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) controls blood pressure by regulating the volume of fluids in the body. ACE facilitates this process by converting the hormone angiotensin I to the active vasoconstrictor angiotensin II. Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors) inhibit ACE, consequently reducing angiotensin II production. Reducing angiotensin II results in the dilation of blood vessels and a reduction of blood pressure. Bradykinin is also a vasodilator in the body that is degraded by ACE. Clinical data suggests that individuals who genetically have lower levels of ACE respond better to training and are at an advantage in endurance sporting events [R, R]. The more blood flow you have, presumably the more oxygen and nutrient carrying capacity you will have during exercise. VasoDrive-AP has shown in 30 clinical studies to date a potent effect on vasodilation and blood pressure reduction via this mechanism completely independent from the traditional Arginine–eNOS–nitric oxide (NO) pathway [R]. Ingredients I Didn’t Include In The Formula And Why Vitamin C Vitamin C is a very potent antioxidant and plays a crucial role in lowering blood pressure and regulating health blood flow. Supplementing a Vitamin C deficient diet can be very beneficial, except when you're dosing it pre-workout. Vitamin C is inexpensive and has tons of clinical data to back its efficacy, so it is often thrown in pre-workouts. The problem with this is that using Vitamin C pre-workout can blunt the hormetic response to the workout itself and hinder your results [R]. The point of working out is to damage the muscle, which then results in the body signaling repair processes to start that will help you recover and ultimately get bigger and stronger to adapt to the workload. If you manually decrease that hormetic response to exercise by ingesting Vitamin C pre-workout, you will reduce the damage done and ultimately prevent your body from stimulating as much growth. Personally, I don't take any vitamins, anti inflammatories, or powerful antioxidants for several hours before or after my workout to be safe. Antioxidants And Vitamins As mentioned, one of the worst things you can do is take antioxidants before your workout. The stress and damage induced by weightlifting or exercise is needed to facilitate muscular recovery and progress. The reactive oxygen species and inflammation produced during intense training assists with that process, and is also why drugs like Ibuprofen can inhibit muscle growth so severely. The inflammatory response to training is what we want in order to recover, and by inhibiting that with antioxidants, vitamins or anti-inflammatory drugs, you prevent your body from breaking down and recovering the way it needs to in order to grow [R, R]. A pre-workout formula with a bunch of vitamins and antioxidants in it is more likely to hinder your gains than help. Potassium I advise reaching your recommended daily intake of 4,700 mg through diet rather than through supplementation. It is not legal to sell Potassium in high amounts, and you will usually find that supplements have no more than 100 mg or so per serving because of this. For this same reason, supplementation isn't cost effective, and pre-workouts with potassium in them are including it solely to claim the benefits of potassium all the while knowing the dose in their product is next to useless. The amount of potassium in pre-workout supplements does next to nothing for you when it comes to helping you hit the RDA. S7™ S7™ is a blend of green coffee bean extract, green tea extract, turmeric extract, tart cherry, blueberry, broccoli and kale that has gotten some hype in pre-workouts recently. I was considering including it in our formula until I saw that the blend was comprised entirely of potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. Turmeric is one of the most potent anti-inflammatory spices known to man, which is why it also shows such therapeutic promise via supplementation. However, the last thing you want to use pre-workout is a potent anti-inflammatory compound. Inflammation is what we are striving for during a workout, and using anything that significantly impairs this inflammatory response to training is something that should not be used pre-workout, and should be saved for taking far away from the peri-workout window. Beta Alanine Beta Alanine is the ingredient that makes your skin itchy and has you sitting there scratching your face between sets. I assume it is included in pre-workouts because you can blatantly feel something when you take it, so people associate feeling something with the product being potent. Personally, I can’t stand the itchy skin effect it has, and it can be bad enough that it ruins a pre-workout just based on that. In addition, it doesn’t have more than a negligible effect on performance at best. Acute sporadic bumps in Beta Alanine will do next to nothing if you are only getting your Beta Alanine dosage from your pre workout supplement a few times per week. If you were to take it correctly, dosing it multiple times per day, for weeks on end, at a high enough dosage, the impact on performance is notable, although still fairly insignificant at the end of the day. “The median effect of β-alanine supplementation is a 2.85% (-0.37 to 10.49%) improvement in the outcome of an exercise measure, when a median total of 179 g of β-alanine is supplemented” [R]. 179 grams (an amount nobody would end up getting in) for a 2.85% improvement in performance, and a ton of itchiness… “Although some laboratory-based studies show an ergogenic effect with beta-alanine supplementation, there is a lack of field-based research in training and competition settings.” “There was an unclear effect (0.4%; ± 0.8%, mean, ± 90% confidence limits) of beta-alanine on competition performance compared to placebo with no meaningful changes in blood chemistry. While there was a transient improvement on training performance after 4 weeks with beta-alanine (-1.3%; ± 1.0%), there was an unclear effect at ten weeks (-0.2%; ± 1.5%) and no meaningful changes in blood chemistry. Beta-alanine supplementation appears to have minimal effect on swimming performance in non-laboratory controlled real-world training and competition settings” [R]. Leucine Taking Leucine post-workout promotes muscle growth. However, taking Leucine in your pre-workout has shown to diminish muscular performance via the inhibition of glycogen to glucose conversion within muscle cells and insulin signaling. On top of that, Leucine can prevent the uptake of Tyrosine into the brain, consequently inhibiting dopamine production, which is the opposite of what we are trying to accomplish pre-workout. Should You Ever Cycle Off Of Gorilla Mode Nitric? Despite Nitric being stimulant free, I would still advise cycling your use of Gorilla Mode Nitric every once in a while. In general, I advise cycling your use of any supplement that isn't being used daily to replace a dietary deficiency. Interfering with balancing mechanisms in the body chronically long-term is almost always going to build up to some unintended negative side effect, and redlining your Nitric Oxide levels and vasodilation on a daily basis for long uninterrupted spans of time will probably be no different. How often you cycle it is ultimately up to your discretion as there is no tolerance build up with the ingredients in Nitric, and some of them actually have accumulative benefits. Personally, I use pre-workouts 4 days per week because I workout 4 times per week. Every month or two I will also take a full week off of everything except for my daily health supplements. How To Combine Gorilla Mode Nitric With Gorilla Mind Rush Gorilla Mode Nitric has no stimulants in it, so if you want the most potent combination of performance, energy, focus and drive pre-workout you can combine Nitric with Gorilla Mind Rush. Dose each product as you would normally dose them on their own, as there is no overlap between the two formulas. How To Combine Gorilla Mode Nitric With Gorilla Mode Gorilla Mode can be combined with Gorilla Mode Nitric to achieve a more middle road level of stimulants but with the maxed out vasodilation and hyper-hydration. The instance in which mixing the two would make the most sense is if you don't want to use a high dose of Gorilla Mode because the stimulant dosages are higher than you prefer or can tolerate, but still want to max out the benefits of the ingredients included for pump and performance. For example, if 2 scoops of Gorilla Mode contains too high of a dose of stimulants for you, you could use 1 scoop of Gorilla Mode with 1 scoop of Gorilla Mode Nitric. Or, a 1/2 scoop of Gorilla Mode with 1.5 scoops of Gorilla Mode Nitric. Alternatively, if you are using Nitric and want a little bump of stimulants but are too sensitive to the stimulant complex in Gorilla Mind Rush, then you might want to add a bit of Gorilla Mode to your Nitric dose as the blend of stimulants in Mode is a notch less aggressive than the stimulants in Rush. Mix and match at your own discretion based on your own stimulant tolerance and exactly what you are looking to get out of your pre-workout. Personally, I love combining Rush and Nitric pre-workout. Sometimes I will use Mode with Nitric instead though as the Kanna and N-Phenethyl Dimethylamine Citrate hits differently than the stimulants in Rush. It all depends on what I'm training, how well rested I am, and the effects I am shooting for. Conclusion - What To Expect From Gorilla Mode Nitric In general, you can expect a massive increase in nitric oxide (NO) levels, vasodilation, intracellular hydration and as significant of a boost in muscle strength and endurance as you can get from a legal non-hormonal pre-workout. This product is maxed out from all angles. The traditional Arginine–eNOS–nitric oxide (NO) pathway is completely saturated with an unheard of dose of L-Citrulline, as well as topped out doses of Nitrosigine and Agmatine Sulfate for good measure. Over a gram of nitrates also ensures that the nitrate–nitrite–nitric oxide (NO) pathway is taken care of. Intracellular hyper-hydration is best-in-class too with a huge dose of Creatine Monohydrate, Glycerpump and Betaine Anhydrous to volumize the muscle and support performance and pumps. Inhibiting the enzyme angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) with a clinical dose of VasoDrive-AP® also checks off another pathway to push the boundaries on supraphysiological levels of vasodilation. Finally, a high dose of Malic Acid was included for good measure to act as a Krebs cycle intermediary and support greater levels of muscular endurance. Try Gorilla Mode Nitric for yourself here and let me know what you think.

Did you know magnesium is needed to perform 300 different bodily functions? That is the power of magnesium. In today's episode with Matt Gallant, we will talk about some of those functions, why we need different types of magnesium for different parts of the body and why we created a special magnesium blend to address these needs. Different types of magnesium are generally used by different parts of your body. For example, magnesium chelate is really important for muscle building recovery and health. Magnesium citrate helps with counteracting some obesity issues and it can help with arterial stiffness in people who are healthy and in those who are overweight. Magnesium biglycinate or glycinate is great for sleep, and it may also help with stomach acid (meaning it can aid in digestion). It may also be helpful in reducing heart disease, Type 2 diabetes as well as osteoporosis. Magnesium taurate is also very beneficial for the heart and for reducing muscle cramping and migraines. Magnesium malate may also help with some of those same issues plus it can alleviate depression and anxiety. Malate is also good at removing aluminum from the body, so it can aid in detoxing as well. Another magnesium we talk about is magnesium L-threonate, it helps with memory, cognitive functioning in the short and long-term as well as overall mental ability. And finally, the last magnesium we recommend is magnesium orotate, which is very helpful for the heart and is especially useful for metabolic improvements. We also share a few studies that show the power of magnesium and how truly beneficial it is for a healthy, functioning mind and body. One particular study followed 4,000 people for 20 years and found that people with the highest magnesium intake were 47% less likely to develop diabetes. Today we also discuss some at-home options for increasing your levels of magnesium like bathing in Epsom salts and more intense, even experimental options that are out there. We share our personal experiences with intravenous magnesium, and how we have brought all 7 types of magnesium together in one special combination for you. It's Wade T Lightheart back with the Awesome Health Podcast. And I got Matty the mad scientist with me today, my co founder, co-conspirator, co-creator co everything. And uh, we're excited today because we're going to reveal something that happened to me a number of years ago. Basically I made a profound discovery crisis is an awesome, awesome opportunity for those who don't know in Japan they write crisis and opportunity actually together in Kaishu script. And so it says danger, proceed with caution, but there's always opportunities within it. And one of the things when you're on the leading edge, the bleeding edge, um, and pushing your body to the max pushing your lifestyle, the maximum as a high performer in variably, I don't know, a high performer that doesn't run into trouble somewhere at some time. It's just, it's just the nature of revs engines at high level. Wade Lightheart: A couple years ago, I fell into a that doing more than I thought possible writing checks my body couldn't cash and just burning it to the absolute max. And I did this for years. Running a bunch of different companies, working day and night, sleeping crazy hours, traveling around, burnt myself to a crisp. Literally, I was at a restaurant in Panama. I was listening like some that's like my best friend. We were living literally five minute walk from each other in, in, in, in about six months. I saw him five times and on the fifth time he's like, dude, what's, what's going on? And I said, Matt, I'm living in hell. And the crazy thing is is, well, let's see. He's like, okay, yeah, I can see that you're struggling. I see you are not quite yourself. Well, what's going on? I said, it's like I can't function. Wade Lightheart: It's like my brain isn't working. This distress of my decisions, I'm having emotional reaction. He goes, okay, well let's go look you up on a brain machine and tell them. Now, Matt, you're an expert in, I would say a in a, in a really great experiment on brainwave function, neurological activity. We both dove deep into that and I knew I wasn't like there was something seriously wrong with me, not just physically. I was lethargic in the gym. But like mentally I was just struggling. What happened when I, when we, when you hooked you up to your, to your lab, your lab tests. Matt Gallant: I have a medical grade neurofeedback device that measures the electrical activity in someone's brain. And part of what gets revealed is the amount, you know, like basically the voltage in someone's brain. And at that time, uh, Wade had around a quarter of the electricity of, uh, my 78 year old friend, uh, who I've seen his brain waves. So, you know, Wade was like maybe one or two levels away from being brain dead essentially. Wade Lightheart: I had the brain of a 280 year old. So, uh, something you don't want to look into. And so of course, uh, you know, the crisis opportunities, like, okay, what do, what do we got to do about this? How do we go about this? And obviously I went off and hired a naturopathic doctor to do a bunch of tests and uh, looked and I, one of the things that I was suffering from was extreme levels of adrenal fatigue. I had been using a variety of stimulants in order to sustain the output. And those work for a while, you know, it's kinda like you, you burn the candle at both ends. And it turned out I was suffering from a condition. It's actually according to American psychological at one of the six leading causes of death. And I, I felt like how I felt like I was gonna die and it turned out I probably actually was well on my wave to setting myself up for a problem. Wade Lightheart: So one of the key elements that I did, obviously I had to change to make some lifestyle changes, but I had to start addressing some of the deficiencies that my, uh, desire or my excess type of lifestyle would contribute to. And the reality is, is one particular nutrient that was super deficient and was my road to recovery is I had to take massive doses of a, of a nutritional supplement that virtually 80% of Americans are deficient in. They don't have it. Uh, and almost everybody doesn't get enough that's deficient just for basic functions. We're not even talking about optimal functions. We're not talking about super optimal function. Matt Gallant: And let's face it, we're BiOptimizers all about like optimize levels, not normal levels, you know, cause again with bioptimization spectrum, yeah, most people, you know, people want to stay normal. That's cool. We're not into that. We're into becoming super humans as you know, in whatever shape, way or form that means for you. And in order to do that, you need to be at optimal levels. So it's very different than, than normal levels. Wade Lightheart: I want to talk about something really important and when we get into this and how important are key elements to a dietary facts. I'm going to share a story, uh, that might seem unrelated, but it is. And that is at the turn of the century, there is a variety of, uh, conditions in North America related to iodine. Remember, we're not talking about iodine today, but I'm going to tell you this story cause this is mindblowing. So there was an iodine deficiency ramping across North America. They started looking at it and they started adding iodine to salt. Here was the crazy result. The average IQ increase in America because of iodized salt increased by 15 points, 15 points just because people were deficient in iodine. I was deficient in this element that we're going to talk about today. And I've come full circle from the moments of hell to the moments of super optimization. I'm so grateful for it and that's why I'm so excited and that's why we're here to talk about this today because I don't know what the potential results are free people out there, but I think it might be the biggest breakthrough in nutrient. Uh, I would say optimization that I've seen in the industry and it doesn't cost that much. That's the best part. It and, and its effects are not only short lasting, but I think it's certainly something that's gonna have a big impact for people over the long term, maybe as effective as what iodine did a hundred years ago. Matt Gallant: So as Wade was going through that experience, um, simultaneously I went through my own, you know, we'll just call it if Wade was, you know, at 12,000 RPM in the red in the, you know, the engine's about to blow. I was probably in the yellow, you know, and the symptoms of that. For an example, I remember I had to give up coffee because I would drink coffee. I would instantly feel fried, like frazzled, like my nerves, my nerves were raw and my nerves felt, you know, frazzles the most accurate description I can come up with. So, and then three different help experts, including Charles Paul, Dr. Joseph Mercola and a friend of mine, all revealed a protocol that we're gonna share with you today that's inspired me to go hog wild. So this was like three months, I think before Wade kind of hit rock bottom. Matt Gallant: And so I get on this protocol and I go hog wild with it, which we're going to reveal. And it was probably you, you know, like there's a lot of supplements, especially when it comes to minerals and vitamins. You don't feel them right? Like, you know, it makes sense. The, the science makes sense and theoretically makes sense. So you, you take them. But this, in terms of feeling it, I just, I was feeling it heal my nervous system. I was feeling myself a shift from fight or flight. And again, when I did a great podcast on healing the nervous system, the parasympathetic and sympathetic. So I was feeling myself shift over from being trapped in sympathetic and certain moving into the healing mode. My sleep improved, my mood improved and I just became like super chill, you know, like just relaxed, which was, you know, it's a sign that you're in a parasympathetic versus when you're, you know, intense and angry and frustrated and irritated and discontent. Matt Gallant: That's, you know, you're in fight or flight. So all of that happened relatively fast. I think it was around two months and you know, it kept getting even better the third month. And then that's when you kinda hit bottom and I said, Hey man, this, you know, this has worked really wonders. And then Wade, you got on this protocol and then you, you know, healed in, in a relatively short amount of time, especially considering how fried you are at that time. Um, you, you made a very quick comeback. Wade Lightheart: Yeah. And that I was really grateful for it. Now it's hard to believe that this one thing could make such a big difference. I mean I did a bunch of things, but we did the testing and stuff in that, the one factor that that changed everything was this particular, um, element, this ingredient. Matt Gallant: I think we've teased them enough I think. I think right now, you know, there's, there's a lot, I feel like we're strippers, just this keep teasing here. They were ready to, to reveal the goods. Um, but before we do, you know, it's this, this nutrient, I got to say when the deeper I went into the research, the more my mind blow and what we're talking about is magnesium. So you've probably heard of magnesium. I mean, you know, it's been something you heard in school and chemistry class and you know, the importance of it. I remember hearing a long time ago. Okay, those 300 different things in the body. But yeah, it's, it's just incredible what it does. Now going back to Wade's story and my story, there's something that I had learned relatively recently about magnesium that blew my own mind. I didn't know this, which is that when you're stressed, okay, you start leaking magnesium at an accelerated rate, your body starts expelling and losing magnesium. Matt Gallant: Now what then does this, there's a numbness, a second order of a consequence, the less magnesium that you have, the more stressed you feel, and then you lose more magnesium. So it's this vicious cycle that Wade went through and I went through that, you know, leads to some level of burnout, of feeling stressed out, feeling overwhelmed. So you know, the antidote, the answer is, you know, taking enough of the right magnesiums and that's what we're going to be talking about. Uh, today is really about the right blends of magnesium, how much to take, how long to take it, and what you can expect. Wade, thoughts? Wade Lightheart: Well, you know, it's funny cause when I went through that piece in diagnose I was all turned on and I had a recollection of a lecture I went to at uh, Bulletproof the Bulletproof conference with Charles Poliquin and Charles Poliquin was a strength coach and he died not that long ago. Matt Gallant: Probably the greatest strike coach. Wade Lightheart: Yeah. He coached gold medalist and I think in, it's over 28 different sports. Matt Gallant: 400 Olympians, I think 400 metal winners. I don't know these guys. Wade Lightheart: Yeah. Professional athletes of all different fields. He was really far ahead. He used to read all these different research journals and you learn different languages to learn a different biases of cultures. It was a very interesting person. He looked amazing and it's unfortunate he died so soon. However, one of the things that made him unique is he athletes undergrowth a disproportionate amount of stress than the regular population. They are continually red line, especially to think about an Olympic athlete or a professional athlete. And one of the things that he talked about is even at a professional athlete and Olympic athlete is another level beyond a professional athlete on, on, on their ability to perform on demand because of professionals doing it over, over, over at an Olympic athlete. And he, one of the things that he said that he was using it's like specifically and in massive quantities was was magnesium but not just one magnesium. Wade Lightheart: He was using different magnesiums for different components of the brain. There were things for brain, things for your heart, things for uh, energy production inside the body, things for recovery, things for cramping, all of these issues. And he had actually broken down magnesium into a bunch of different types and was using supplementation because it's virtually impossible. It is virtually impossible regardless of any diet that you're following to get all of the magnesiums. And one of the things that's happening today in the world of testing and stuff is we're now able to drill down a little deeper instead of just protein, fats and carbohydrates. Well, it's now we've taken minerals and vitamins and supplements nce and we're able to drill down to the different components of those, which ones are more utilizable by the body, which ones are more available to the body, which ones have performed different functions inside the body. Matt Gallant: It's a great segue into talking about like the different types of magnesiums and what they do. Um, and the essence is this. Different magnesiums tend to go to different parts of the body and affect them. So if you just taking one type or even two types of magnesium, there's a lot of your organs in different parts of your body, including maybe your brain or your heart that are deficient. So what's the answer is to have a wide variety of different types of magnesium. So magnesium chelate is really important for muscle building recovery and health. Magnesium citrate helps with some of, you know, counteracting some of the obesity issues and it can help with arterial stiffness with healthy, even overweight individuals, magnesium biglycinate or glycinate, essentially the same thing. Um, that's a great one for sleep, and sometimes it also helps with, you know, stomach acid. So on the digestive side it can have some positive benefits. Wade Lightheart: It's, it's also used for heart disease type 2 diabetes to assist in breaking down sugars. And it's a key component in osteoporosis as well. Matt Gallant: Yeah, magnesium malate - some people believe it's the most bioavailable and it can help with migraines, chronic pain and depression and just, just the research there that we're going to get into around magnesium and anxiety and depression is just, it's just mind blowing. Wade Lightheart: Last thing, one thing on the, on the, on the malate, it's also good for removing aluminum from the body. So if you're looking for detoxification, it's a, it's a, it's a great one for that as well. Matt Gallant: Magnesium L-threonate. Um, L-threonate, which is the one you use for brain. I've used a lot of it. It's one of my favorites. Uh, it seems to help with working memory, mental ability, functioning capability, long and short term. Wade Lightheart: And in my, in my own situation that was the, that was the one that was really a big game changer for me on the cognitive side, on the sleep side. I was so stressed out, I wasn't sleeping. It was part of the reason why I was getting so, uh, reduced. And my naturopathic doctor, she recommended that I take massive quantities of this in particular because of the brain. And one of the things that I noticed if you're struggling with memory, that's, that was the one I couldn't remember anything. And when you're, and that one literally my, my memory came back cause I generally have an extraordinary memory and uh, it really made a big difference for me when I was taking L-threonate. Matt Gallant: Well what happens when you're stressed out? It blows out your hippocampus, which destroys your short term memory. So you know, that was just another side effect of the vicious cycle that you were trapped in. And you know, I might as well reveal this right now. I'm the best stack that like, cause I'm about four and a half years ago, I was noticing that my short term memory was starting to decline. And you know, at the time I'm 38, I'm like, you know, this, this is not good. So I started taking um, magnesium and fish oil, which we're going to get back into, you know, uh, you on DHA essentially you can get it from plant-based as well from the allergies. We'll get back to that. But that and Lion's Mane, which is a mushroom that helps increase BDNF in the brain, brain drive and trophic factors that stack from memory. Matt Gallant: And again, it's, it's one of those things that it builds up and it gets better and better. Like you'll notice it in about 30 days and then 90 days it gets better in six months. And now, I mean, it feels like my short term, just my memory in general is as good as I was probably as a, as a teenager before I started using drugs. So there you go. You know, definitely works. Um, next is magnesium Taurates, which is probably the best one for the heart. And one study noted this complex magnesium Taurate made us have considerable potential as a vascular protective nutritional supplement. So that's a really good one for your vascular system. Wade Lightheart: It's also, it's also for people who suffer from migraines. Um, that one is a really great one. And for women who are suffering from PMs, cramping. So I have a lot of women that reach out to me and that my naturopathic doctor who happens to be a female, she's like, this is the one that females typically respond best to. Or also athletes who are dealing with a lot of cramping issues. Matt Gallant: Yeah, that's awesome. And uh, the last one we recommend is magnesium Orotate, which is very helpful for the heart, but the, it's really the number one use magnesium for metabolic improvements. So far on the athletic side, if you're working on hard, uh, you want better performance, better recovery energy, and that'll help because magnesium is involved and helps the mitochondria produce more ATP, which is where your energy comes from. So this magnesium seems to hit that pathway significantly. Like you know, and I remember that. I think the first time I heard about magnesium was back in our body building days Wade and you know, we had the big stack magazines, you know, they were talking about magnesium for, for strife and for working out. And I remember when I did my loading phase of magnesium, like I added two, three, four reps on everything. I think in like two weeks. I, you know, it was, it was a huge jump in performance in the gym. So I mean, what have you noticed in terms of the benefits from an athletic side in terms of working out or recovery? Wade Lightheart: Well, you know, particularly with Orotate as well, um, it's really good for blood sugar. It's, I find it's great for handling food, uh, food cravings or sugar cravings if my magnesium levels are high. If I'm taking math, like I actually, cause I eat a lot of carbs, but I notice when I take my magnesium in the mornings, uh, my first milk, cause sometimes I'll, I'll have tea, any caffeine subject can diminish your magnesium supply. Just so you know, and I, and I, and I also, because I eat such a rich of vegetable diet, I tend to get a lot of calcium and calcium and magnesium work in a ratio. So if I take my magnesium, I don't have the sweet sugar cravings. When I, when I don't take my magnesium, if I forget for what he was on or I'm on the road and I forgot my magnesium, okay, uh, I get those sugar cravings. Wade Lightheart: But the other thing is what I find, I don't get cramping either. A, I that the tightness in the muscles, uh, firing as well is if I get, if you're sweating, one of the things for athletes who are sweating, particularly, you know, people who are on quarter the field for hours at a time, the drop in magnesium is one of the reasons why they start losing the pop. They start, they start to, you know, slow down. It's, and if you see those fourth quarters in the NFL, often times it's not just dehydration, it's the key loss of magnesium in those cases. And in a worst case situation and you see this with a long distance runners and endurance people or athletes that get heart rhythms like a, they get the heart rhythm gets disrupted or they have an irregular heartbeat. You're seeing it more and more in athletic performance that's directly related to magnesium and Orotate as the probably the best one to deal with those things. Matt Gallant: Yeah. So you know, and just to kind of add to what you've said, like in terms of athletic performance, um, in terms of moving beyond just magnesium, your magnesium, we just highlight how critical it is. Couple of things you are there, things you want. One is potassium, um, which I, I don't think I've shared in this podcast, but what I do, I have this pitcher of, of water and I put about a quarter teaspoon of cream of tartar inside of it with salt so I can absorb more. And it just got my blood work done and my potassium was like kiddo, really up there where you want it. Um, I mean you don't, you don't want it too high but quarter teaspoon and they'll give you the dose. And then enough calcium, cause you know, if you're cramping or your muscles not firing, you're either missing your calcium, the potassium or the magnesium and calcium. Matt Gallant: You don't need that much. Like, you know, eating cheese, like a little bit of cheese twice a week. Most people just have an overload of calcium in their body. And in what way? To share really cool story in a second. But like I said, right now there's kind of an overdose of calcium and most people's diet you don't need that much. So I don't think people need to be concerned too much with that. I think it's more to the magnesium that people are really deficient in. And then again, the potassium. So you know, using salt, especially like Himalayan salt, sea salt, I mean they just load it in your food unless you have really, really high blood pressure. Um, but you want to be able to, to retain water. Okay. If I don't, especially like I'm on keto, so if I'm not eating enough salt, I just lose water like crazy cause I don't have the carbs to hold it in. So that's one of the things. But Wade, why don't you share your story about when you went to Bali and you did the intravenous magnesium because I've done it too, but I think think it's a really powerful, um, story, Wade and I have a really powerful theory or an exciting theory about magnesium and calcium. So Wade, go ahead. Wade Lightheart: So one, so as being, the radical experiment is there, once I've found out that I had magnesium deficiency, I was like, okay, what else can I do? And I found out there is a way that you can do it intravenously. And so I happened to have, I went to Bali and had a naturopathic physician who would use this actually, he was a special forces person and they used to do a magnesium for, for special forces people who are in extreme cases of stress and distress. They would do this. And so what they did, you kind of dose up and obviously don't do this at home, get a doctor to supervisor. You could really mess yourself up if you took too much. But basically you take this, you put an intravenously and they start dripping it into your system. Now what starts to happen? First off, there's a general sense of regular like relaxation and then it kinda hits pretty much. Wade Lightheart: It gets, you get so relaxed, it kind of gets hard to move around if you have to go to the bathroom or something. You're getting kind of feel a little jelly. Uh, I mean this is super physiological doses of magnesium. But then what happens is where you've got little alleys or calcium buildups in the body, it starts to burn. And I literally started to get burning inside my brain where I had calcium deposits built up in the brain tissue. I had like cold shoulder injuries from way back in the day when I was benching too much weight, too fast, um, that would literally start to burn. Uh, and so what I believe is that the, and this is theory theoretical, is that the magnesium as it went through the body, was finding these places where the calcium was up, bonding with the calcium and dissipating the calcium in those particular pieces. And I've done that a whole bunch of times ever since. And I can tell you every single time I get burning in some area of my body. Matt Gallant: Yeah. And the last in the last hardcore brain optimization brain training we did, we were doing, it was a blend of different vitamins and amino acids, but there was a very high dose of magnesium and the doctor that was injecting that says, uh, that's going to hit you right in the genitals. And yeah. You know, I don't think I did as high a dose as you did. Um, I mean it was kind of a nice warm, uh, pleasant feelings. So that was my experience injecting my knees. Matt Gallant: You know, I am the extreme optimizer, the mad scientist. So it, it, I wouldn't be doing myself a service. I wouldn't be authentic Matt Gallant: unless I've revealed another way to load magnesium, which, you know, only the crazies will be excited about. And I haven't done this yet. I have researched it. Um, there is a doctor that uses a protocol and again, you know, try to set your own risks, make sure you talk to your doctor, if you're doing crazy experiments, but it's rectal magnesium loads. And the, the issue with like doing a crazy amount, uh, orally is that the magnesium pulls water. That's not a big problem. You know, you get just a flushing effect and you go to the bathroom and you know, it ends there. In fact, some of them, there's, there's other magnesium's yeah. That I've used for flushing. Like let's say you're doing a fast and you really want to do kind of an intestinal cleanse. There's, there's special magnesiums that like really pulled the water in. Matt Gallant: And you know, we've, we're a fan of minimizing that. But when you start getting past like two grams at a time, that's typically when you start getting some flushing effects. So let's say you want to load like five grams at a time, then that's when, um, you would basically prepare the magnesium with water and basically do an enema and your body's just going to absorb it. So it was probably the second best way after injections. And again, I haven't done this yet but probably will very soon. So anyways, again, just wanted to share that cause I know some people like crazy experiments. Wade Lightheart: I know another thing that you were a big fan of is floating in magnesium, salt pools and one of the big things, Joe Rogan is a big fan of that as well. And the magnesium is a great way just lying in a pool of mags, which has been known for a long time. Wade Lightheart: Magnesium salts also as a way of get it externally. It doesn't have the internal benefits but it does have a general relaxation effect. Matt Gallant: Yeah, I'm a huge fan. Um, I mean and again for those of us that don't have float tanks at home, you can buy like Epson salts, get in, get into the bathtub or you know, hot tub or whatever you have and throw it in there and, and get, you know, cause you will absorb some, uh, through the skin and it will have some effects. So yeah, I'm a huge fan. It's a great thing to do before bed to relax or yeah, floating to me is still my, like my number one favorite. Biohacks so to speak, uh, to, to, to relax and to heal the nervous system and get me out of fight or flight. So anyways, let's jump into some mindblowing research on magnesium. Matt Gallant: Um, so on the aquatic side, there was athletes supplementing with magnesium for four weeks. They had faster running, cycling, swimming times during a triathlon and they experienced reductions in insulin, which, you know, when your insulin goes down it, there's almost every part of the body. There's this, uh, you know, yin and yang. So the yin and yang would insulin is glucagon. And when you release glucagon, you burn, you're in fat burning mode periods. So anything you can do to reduce insulin is a, also reduction in stress hormone levels. Um, now on the mood side, this is where, and I experienced the effects of this. Like I really did. Um, I went from kind of being kind of stressed out to being a level of chill that, you know, you know, haven't smoked weed in a long time, but when I used to, um, you know, that it was almost like that level of chill, you know, and it was like all the time. Matt Gallant: It wasn't, I wasn't high after taking pills. I was like in a permit chill zone. So in terms of magnesium, um, it's been linked to like magnesium deficiencies have been linked to depression, increased risk of depression, uh, and then supplementing with the mineral, there's been a lot of reduction in the symptoms of depression. Sometimes in some cases it can be dramatic. Um, now in randomized controlled trials in depressed older adults, 450 milligrams improved mood as effectively as an antidepressant drug. I mean, think about that. That's, that's incredible. So, and that's, that's a relatively low dose in our opinion. So four 50 can replace antidepressants. That's pretty exciting. One study follows 4,000 people for 20 years and found that the ones with the highest magnesium intake were 47% less likely to develop diabetes. So we're talking massive beneficial effects on blood sugar and insulin. I mean that, that alone in terms of weight loss in terms of health is again, incredible. Matt Gallant: Then there was one study that found that 450 milligrams per day increased, experienced a significant decrease in blood pressure in both the systolic and diastolic. Um, again, more research on prevailing insulin resistance and many people would, metabolic syndrome are deficient. So metabolic syndrome is a term for people that you know, don't seem to be responding to normal weight loss parameters. Like the, maths not making sense, you know, they're, they're not eating that much or direct resizing. They're, they're not, um, you know, they're insulin resistant. Like there's, there's a whole set of things that makes up metabolic syndrome, but again, people that are deficient in magnesium seem to, to show that another study shoot insulin, uh, improvements in insulin resistance. But another study found that it reduced insulin resistance and blood sugar levels even in people with normal blood levels, which means that it will help you again burn more body fat. And we'd mentioned this earlier, that magnesium has been shown to improve mood, reduce water retention, aka bloating and other symptoms in women with PMs. So, I mean that's just a quick, quick overview of, you know, there's hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of studies, but I just wanted to highlight that, you know, this is the mineral that can drop your stress, improve your blood sugar, improve your brain, improve your athletic performance, improve your sleep, improve your PMs symptoms. I mean, there's almost no part of your body that it doesn't have a positive impact on. Wade Lightheart: And also just increase your capacity to handle things like caffeine because pretty much everybody is pounding caffeine these days. It's a big trend. And you know, I think one of the things that's really important is now you're able to enjoy a coffee or a caffeinated beverage without any of that, that edginess that kind of comes associated with it or the, you know, the frying feeling, if you will. Matt Gallant: Yeah. So let's talk about the protocol. Um, so I want to share, I'm going to share again, it was, you know, in three people that you trust and respect. Tell you more or less the same thing. I always think that is a sign from the universe. So Poliquin's protocol was around five grams of magnesium a day and 20 grams of fish oil. You know, uh, Mercola was very similar. Now Mercola hit his, what he's saying is that the magnesium can help counter counteract a lot of the negative consequences of the EMF cause the electromagnetic frequency pollution from cell phones and wifi. What we know now is that it opens up what's called the calcium gates in the cells. So you're basically like leaking calcium. And if you think about aging, aging, like most of the negative consequences, whether you're talking about heart disease or arthritis, is that calcification of the body, right? Matt Gallant: The body's hardening in all the wrong places. So you don't want to be, you don't want your cells to be leaking calcium. So he's a big proponent of magnesium to help counteract a lot of those side effects. And then the other guy, uh, it was, uh, a mutual friend of Wade's. His, his approach was to heal the nervous system. So that's where he was coming from. So all three guys again had a very similar protocol which was around three to five grams of magnesium a day with a big essential oil loading protocol. Now if Wade is vegetarian, and Wade I want you to share your favorite vegetarian oil sources because I think there's some synergy between the magnesium and again, essential fatty acids. Wade Lightheart: Yeah, I do believe that's true. Um, for those of you who have checked out some of our podcasts, there's two particular ones. I'm going to refer you to dr Udo Erasmus, "Fats that heal, fats that kill", he's kind of the guy that put fats back on the map. He's a friend of mine here in Vancouver, world renowned guy, great guy. He talks about the relationship and how important that is and and providing, you know, your three sixes and nines, you can get them from plant sources. You just, the threes are a little bit tough, so you've got to watch that and make sure that you get an a balances. The other one is Ian Clark's Activation oils. I think some of the best liquid oils I've ever taken. I, I was always someone that struggled with oils, taking oils probably from my bodybuilding days where we had to, I'm a literally cut fats out of my diet for about 10 years and got to super physiological low body fat levels, which depleted my myelin sheath and nervous system. Wade Lightheart: So again, on the extreme side, again, you know, feeling the burn. But yeah, I use those oils. I like to, I like to take my magnesium with my essential oils in the morning. Uh, they're great. And again, with oils, I mean it like everything cheaper is cheaper. Like go with the best stuff, go with the products are out, you can and if you're a vegetarian, uh, definitely you want to supplement your diet with a, you know, either the Udo's oil or the Activation oil inside it. There's a, uh, there's another company out there. It's, I think it's an MLM company called doTERRA. They have an essential, and I, I'm not getting anything from any of these, just so you know, they have an essential, uh, a plant based essential fatty acid, which is a combination of a bunch of different essential oils. That's really good as well. So the vegetarian one from those guys is fantastic and I've, I felt benefits on all of those products and I use them. Uh, I stack, I take a little bit of each one, uh, every day. Matt Gallant: Yeah. And another great source for vegetarians that want the DHA, which is really the key one for the brain is Algae, right? So either, you know, E3Live is a great one and they have BrainON, which is specifically, it's an Algae that these spin to remove the cell walls that crosses the blood brain brain barrier. I'm a, I'm a fan of that product as well, even though I am a, I'm not vegetarian, but um, yeah, so the Algae, another good service. Now, if you're not vegetarian, I'm a fan of krill oils. Probably. Um, my favorite source and you know, I'll, I'll usually stack that with the fish oil, but curls my go-to and uh, again, I'll sack that official. Now let's talk about dosage. Um, in my opinion, you start with 500 milligrams, maybe two or three times a day, which will give you about one and a half grams a day. Matt Gallant: And that's a really, you know, it's a good dose. Uh, and it's a tolerable dose. Yeah. I'd be surprised if you have any digestive distress. Um, you can also start with about five grams of fish oil and then you start ramping it up. So you go from, you know, half a gram to a gram. Um, where I went the highest was six grams a day. That was a little too high. Yes. You know, I was, I was definitely having watery stools at that point. So for me, if I'm really pushing the dose, it's around, you know, four or five grams. And the thing is we recommend you do a loading phase of 60 to 90 days and once you're loaded then you go back to like a gram, a gram and a half, maybe two grams a day, depending how intense your life is. Cause you know, keep in mind like if you're training hard, you need more minerals, you're burning up more things, you know, you're, you're, you're using up, um, you're sweating minerals, you're sweating salt through sweating, magnesium, you're sweating, all of these things, you're burning them up at a higher rate. So what have you found works for you in terms of dosage? Wade Lightheart: Orthomolecular nutrition, um, which was developed by Abram Hoffer and um, Linus Pauling and Hawkins way back in the 70s, they developed a way of doing things. It was kind of what Matt's referring to. This isn't something that we've just cooked up at a, our ideas, what they did is they would always keep titrating up, bringing up the dosage until you break what's called the gastrointestinal barrier. That's where you get the runs. That's where you get the watery stools. So start at that half gram. And what I did is when I first started out get this [inaudible], I went to eight and a half grams per day before I started getting stills. That's how deficient I was. My body just started stacking. And then after about three weeks, I got the runs one morning on my, on my dosage, and I was like, okay. So at that point, what I did is I tapered down to six. Wade Lightheart: I went about another month. And keep in mind though, I did do the intro. I, I, during that time I went and did the, uh, the, um, IV drip of magnesium. And when I did that in combination, I went from six down to four and I've stayed around for ever since. And I take it every single day. And, uh, if I go for a long, like sometimes I do these long walks or I do an intense, like I'll do like a four hour work, four hour walk in the heat or whatever. I'll, up it a little bit and I don't get any, uh, digestive stuff. Now that's me in particular. Um, each person is going to different, you can do what's called a SpectraCell analysis. So we talked about this on another podcast with dr Maximus and everybody should do this test. Wade Lightheart: Um, it's a test where they spin your blood and they can tell how well you absorb a particular, uh, nutrients. So for example, Matt, myself, and let's say you the listener, we could all take the same amount of magnesium, but we will not absorb the same amount of magnesium. And we're also, Matt and I are taking, uh, we're taking one of our, you know, well-known products, which is Masszymes, which in order for you to get your minerals, you need minerals to get your proteins, proteins to get your minerals, minerals to get your vitamin. And most people are deficient in enzymes. So I would recommend also adding in enzymes or Masszymes product. And on top of that, because that's going to also assist an absorbent. And if you can take it with a meal or, Wade Lightheart: or, or with the protein drink or, you know, breakfast and stuff like that, I usually have it with my breakfast every morning. And I like it that way. And then also for my lunch.. Matt Gallant: So Wade and I, we, we were kind of guys that just follow our passion and, and we, you know, we, we, I'm passionate about things that work and from the beginning of BiOptimizers, you know, just to give you some backstory, and I don't think we've ever shared this publicly, so if we share bits of it, but Wade and I were doing this, this incredible protocol with very high dose enzymes, very high dose probiotics. This is before we ever created any products. And we were so blown away by the results that we said, you know what, let's create a better version of those products because they work, they're incredible. Let's build a better version and share it with the world. Matt Gallant: And that's what we've done with magnesium. So again, Wade and I, I've been using magnesium now for about two years. Um, again, using these protocols and you know, like I, I've got to think like five different types of mag, like five different types of magnesium downstairs that I have to pop in and, and take and you know, and one of them as three and you don't want, as you know, that's just what I have to do to get all the magnesiums that I want. Um, the other issue too with a lot of magnesium blends, and I don't know why they don't do this, but they don't put the cofactors. There's a couple of things that you can put into magnesium that will actually help absorption. So what way did I have done? We have a combined all seven magnesiums that we talked about earlier along with the cofactors and we've created a product called Magnesium Breakthrough. So we're really excited to share this with you. I think it's going to become the magnesium of the health industry. We haven't seen anything like it. There's some magnesium of act three, some have four, but I haven't seen any with all seven. So we're super excited to be bringing this to you. I think that's going to be one of the most impactful supplements you've ever felt, specially if you're stressed out. And again, it's one of these things too. If you're training hard, you'll see some incredible results in the gym. Wade Lightheart: Yeah, pretty exciting. The other thing I also want to add to that is like all of our products, we have the 365 day your Money Back guarantee. If you don't, if you don't feel the difference taking this, if you don't say, this is awesome, I feel awesome, I can feel the difference. You just reach out to us and call us and we just give you your money back. We, there's nothing more expensive than a product that doesn't work and then there's nothing that feels better than a product that delivers on what you want. And one of the things that we represented by optimizers is over delivering on the promises that we make and removing all the risk of purchasing with us because we were not in the business of selling products. We're in the business of creating relationships with people who want to optimize their health, live long, live strong for a long period of time. Wade Lightheart: So, you know, I simple sale or something like that. That's not what we're interested in. We're interested in being your GoTo advisors, your health advocates, to bring you the latest research. What we've been doing, what we've blown up on, what we've learned as well as the experts who can, who are influencing us and our decisions. And if we can make a product that will enhance people's lives better than other people, we do it. If we can't make a product that's better than anything on the market, we refer you to the people that, that we do check our podcasts. That's what we're into. We don't make everything, but what we do make is absolutely fantastic. And for those of you who have tried our products and are with us, we want to thank you and enjoy it. And I think this is going to be another element that you're going to add to your repertoire that's going to make a big difference for you and your family over the decades. Matt Gallant: Yeah. So the website is a magnesiumbreakthrough.com. And you know what's really nice about magnesium is even if you're on a tight budget, uh, you know, you can get a really positive effect for around a dollar a day. So, you know, even if, again, if you're cash strapped, I think it's probably one of the biggest bang for the bucks in terms of cost to benefit ratio. And you know, going back to the BiOptimizers triangle, which is the aesthetics, the performance in health, um, everything that we do is moving, you know, one, two or all three of those such triangles sides further out. And you know, for those of you that are into high-performance and whether that's, you know, business pushing your brain or at why I performance, um, you have to make sure, and again listen to our nervous system projects cause we went pretty deep, but you have to make sure that you're, you're balancing or managing the fight or flight response. Matt Gallant: If you're just trapped in that side and you're going to burn out and really your performance then starts dropping and your help starts dropping. So that's why the magnesium blend, Magnesium Breakthrough, you know, you're keeping yourself out of fight or flight, you're, you're, you're pushing your body into parasympathetic, just using this miserable. So that allows you to keep training harder without burning out or working harder without burning out. I think, you know, way you would have had this product back when you were in your, you know, super intense work zone, you probably would have avoided, you know, being almost clinically brain dead on a EEG machine. Wade Lightheart: Yeah. And that's a, that's the thing, you know, um, you always have to be kind of humble enough to say, well, what if maybe I should give it a shot? Um, the reality is is I'm probably not gonna change my hard wiring. I've, you know, I've been an extreme athlete virtually all my life. I was, you know, from hockey and violence, sports like that, and then that transit into kind of extreme levels of bodybuilding at the high levels. And now we're at extreme business building and, and as you age, things happen in your body, changes happen. And sometimes deficiencies can kind of go undetected too. You kind of fall off the cliff or life changes. You go through a divorce, you go through a business stress, um, maybe someone in your family gets sick, maybe you end up traveling a lot, and there's these little points, these spikes that are the pieces that puts you over the top. Matt Gallant: And oftentimes it's for those high performers out there, you kind of think that you can gut it out. Um, so I do recommend, uh, getting a net naturopathic doctor. Do your regularly regular testing, look at your, your blood, look at your results. And what's interesting when you add products like magnesium, like are digestive enzymes. Everything else just seems to work better. So a, we're pumped and we're excited about this. I think it's a, we're for all those guys that are like us who have been, you know, we've got half a dozen bottles of magnesium in our cupboard. Uh, it's nice to just be able to throw all of those in, you know, uh, in the garbage and just have one bottle. And I've got that covered every day. And that's, that's one of the beauties, you know, it's also about efficiency. And effectiveness. And so when you look at the price invested for your magnesium, instead of buying five bottles of all these different ones, you can just buy one bottle or three bottles and you're good to go. Matt Gallant: Yeah. Our philosophy when we create products and Wade alluded to it, we're either the first in class meaning you know, we're creating a new type of product or we're the best in class. And you know, magnesium was a lot of magnesiums out there. But again, you will not find one that has seven magnesiums plus the cofactors in this ratio. Cause you know, one of the things we did, we optimize it to minimize the water flushing. So the ratio of the magnesiums that we put in, we're again designed to minimize that water flushing so that you can push the dose if you want you to get. Again, there is a point where it'll happen, but it's, it's a lot higher than what you would normally experience. So again, the website's magnesium breakthrough. Uh, we want to thank you for spending your valuable time with Wade and I, and we'll be back soon with some more cutting edge bleeding edge information. Wade Lightheart: Thanks so much and have yourself an awesome day.

Funding for the Bojinka Plot came from Osama bin Laden and Hambali, and from front organizations operated by Mohammed Jamal Khalifa, bin Laden's brother-in-law. Wali Khan Amin Shah, an Afghan, was the financier of the plot. He funded the plot by laundering money through his girlfriend and other Manila women, several of whom were bar hostesses and one of whom was an employee at a KFC restaurant. They were bribed with gifts and holiday trips so that they would open bank accounts to stash funds. The transfers were small, equivalent to about 12,000 to 24,000 Philippine pesos ($500 to $1,000 US), and would be handed over each night at a Wendy's or a karaoke bar. The funds went to "Adam Sali", an alias used by Ramzi Yousef. The money came through a Filipino bank account owned by Jordanian Omar Abu Omar, who worked at International Relations and Information Centre, an Islamic organization run by Mohammed Jamal Khalifa. A company called Konsojaya also provided financial assistance to the Manila cell by laundering money to it. Konsojaya was a front company that was started by the head of the group Jemaah Islamiyah, an Indonesian named Riduan Isamuddin, also known as Hambali. Wali Khan Amin Shah was on the board of directors of the company. As soon as Yousef arrived in Manila along with other "Arab Afghans" who were making cells in Manila, he started to work on making bombs. Yousef had shown up in Singapore with Shah earlier in the fall of 1994. The two got their Philippine visas in Singapore. He left Manila for several days, but was met by Islamist emissaries upon his return to Metro Manila. They asked him to attack United States President Bill Clinton, who was due to arrive in the Philippines on November 12, 1994 as part of a five-day tour of Asia. Yousef thought of several ways to kill the president, including placing nuclear bombs on Clinton's motorcade route, firing a Stinger missile at Air Force One or the presidential limousine, launching theater ballistic missiles at Manila and or killing him with phosgene, a chemical weapon. He abandoned the idea, as it would be too difficult to kill the President. However, he incorporated his plan to kill the Pope into the Bojinka plot. In 1994, Yousef and Khalid Sheik Mohammed started testing airport security. Yousef booked a flight between Kai Tak International Airport in Hong Kong and Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport near Taipei. Mohammed booked a flight between Ninoy Aquino International Airport near Manila and Kimpo International Airport near Seoul. The two had already converted fourteen bottles of contact lens solution into bottles containing nitroglycerin, which was readily available in the Philippines. Yousef had taped a metal rod to the arch of his foot, which would serve as a detonator. The two wore jewelry and clothing with metal to confuse airport security. To support their claim that they were meeting women, they packed condoms in their bags. On December 8, Yousef moved into the Doña Josefa Apartments under the alias "Najy Awaita Haddad" and purported himself to be a Moroccan. Edith Guerrera, the manager, laughed with the receptionist after the two men asked for new registration forms. "Perhaps they have forgotten their names", she said as the first ones were torn up. Yousef had accidentally put his "real name" on the first form. He did not want to get discovered too early. Yousef had booked Room 603 in advance. He had made an Php 80,000 (Philippine peso) deposit, and added Php 40,000 more up front before taking the elevator to Room 603. A conspirator named Abdul Hakim Murad came to Manila with Yousef and stayed at the same apartment. The apartments are located in the Malate district, 200 meters away from the embassy of the Holy See in the Philippines, and 500 meters down the street from Manila Police Station No. 9 on Quirino Avenue. One of the windows of Room 603 looks down on the path that the Papal motorcade was to take. People were suspicious of the men in Room 603. The men renting the apartment were very secretive. According to Guerrera, "They gave me the impression that they were here to study", said Mrs. Guerrera. "They looked like students. They double locked the door when they were inside or out. They didn't ask the room boy to clear up the room." The men, who had chemical burns on their hands, were carrying boxes and never hired other people to carry them up. The boxes contained chemicals bought from suppliers in Manila and Quezon City in Metro Manila. Yousef would use these to make his bombs. Mohammed purported himself to be a Saudi or Qatari plywood exporter named "Abdul Majid." Yousef and Mohammed had already started planning Operation Bojinka. According to Abdul Hakim Murad, Yousef got an idea for crashing a plane into the CIA from Murad while at the apartments. According to Murad, Yousef replied, "OK, we will think about it", before heading off with Mohammed to Puerto Galera for scuba diving. Yousef's first operational test of his bomb was inside a mall in Cebu City. The bomb detonated several hours after he put it in a generator room. It caused minor damage, but it proved to Yousef that his bomb was workable. On December 1, Shah placed a bomb under a seat in the Greenbelt Theatre in Manila to test what would happen if a bomb exploded under an airline seat. The bomb went off, injuring several patrons. On December 11, 1994, Yousef built another bomb, which had one tenth of the power that his final bombs were planned to have, in the lavatory of an aircraft. He left it inside the life jacket under his seat (26 K) and got off the plane when it arrived in Cebu. Yousef had boarded the flight under the assumed name of Arnaldo Forlani, using a false Italian passport. The aircraft was Philippine Airlines Flight 434 on a Manila to Narita route, stopping partway at Cebu. Yousef had set the timer for four hours after he got off the aircraft. The bomb exploded while the aircraft was over Japan's Minamidaitō Island, part of Okinawa Prefecture. A Japanese businessman named Haruki Ikegami occupying the seat was killed and an additional 10 passengers were injured. The flight was carrying 273 passengers in total. The blast blew a hole in the floor and the cabin's rapid expansion severed several control cables in the ceiling, cutting off control of the plane's right aileron, as well as both the pilot and first officer's steering controls. Usually, 26K, the seat that Yousef chose to plant the bomb, would be positioned directly over the centre fuel tank, and the detonation of the bomb would have caused a crippling explosion, but on this particular airframe, a former Scandinavian Airlines aircraft, the seat was two rows forward from normal. The flight crew kept control of the Boeing 747-200 and brought it into an emergency landing at Okinawa's Naha Airport. Satisfied with the deadly results of the attack, Yousef then planned which flights to attack for "Phase II" of the plot. The first plan was to assassinate Pope John Paul II when he visited the Philippines during the World Youth Day 1995 celebrations. On January 15, 1995, a suicide bomber would dress up as a priest, while John Paul II passed in his motorcade on his way to the San Carlos Seminary in Makati City. The assassin planned to get close to the Pope, and detonate the bomb. The planned assassination of the Pope was intended to divert attention from the next phase of the operation. About 20 men had been trained by Yousef to carry out this act prior to January 1995. The details of Phase I were found in the evidence discovered in the investigation into Room 603 in the Doña Josefa. The next plan would have involved at least five terrorists, including Yousef, Shah, Murad and two more unknown operatives. Beginning on January 21, 1995, and ending on January 22, 1995, they would have placed bombs on 11 United States-bound airliners which had stopovers scattered throughout East Asia and Southeast Asia. All of the flights had two legs. The bombs would be planted inside life jackets under seats on the first leg, and each bomber would then disembark. He would then board one or two more flights and repeat. After all of the bombers had planted bombs on all of the flights, each man would then catch flights to Lahore, Pakistan. The men never needed U.S. visas, as they only would have been on the planes for their first legs in Asia. United States airlines had been chosen instead of Asian airlines so as to maximize the shock toward Americans. The flights targeted were listed under operatives with codenames: "Zyed", "Majbos", "Markoa", "Mirqas" and "Obaid". Obaid, who was really Abdul Hakim Murad, was to hit United Flight 80, and then he was to go back to Singapore on another United flight which he would bomb. Zyed, probably Ramzi Yousef, was to target Northwest Flight 30, a United Flight going from Taipei to Honolulu, and a United Flight going from Bangkok to Taipei to San Francisco. The explosions were to be timed by the operatives before they disembarked from the plane. The aircraft would have exploded over the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea almost simultaneously. If this plan worked, several thousand passengers would have perished, and air travel would likely have been shut down worldwide. The U.S. government estimated the prospective death toll to be about 4,000 if the plot had been executed. (For comparison, about 3,000 were killed during the September 11 attacks in the United States.) If Phase II of the plot had been successful, it would have been, in terms of casualties, the most devastating terrorist attack in recent history. The "Mark II" "microbombs" had Casio digital watches as the timers, stabilizers that looked like cotton wool balls, and an undetectable quantity of nitroglycerin as the explosive. Other ingredients included glycerin, nitrate, sulfuric acid, and minute concentrations of nitrobenzene, silver azide(silver trinitride), and liquid acetone. Two 9-volt batteries in each bomb were used as a power source. The batteries would be connected to light bulb filaments that would detonate the bomb. Murad and Yousef wired an SCR (silicon controlled rectifier) as the switch to trigger the filaments to detonate the bomb. There was an external socket hidden when the wires were pushed under the watch base as the bomber would wear it. The alteration was so small that the watch could still be worn in a normal manner. Yousef got batteries past airport security during his December 11 test bombing of Philippine Airlines Flight 434 by hiding them in hollowed-out heels of his shoes. Yousef smuggled the nitroglycerin on board by putting it inside a small container, reputedly containing contact lens cleaning solution. Abdul Hakim Murad's confession detailed Phase III in his interrogation by the Manila police after his capture. Phase three would have involved Murad either renting, buying, or hijacking a small airplane, preferably a Cessna. The airplane would be filled with explosives. He would then crash it into the Central Intelligence Agency headquarters in the Langley area in Fairfax County, Virginia. Murad had been trained as a pilot in North Carolina, and was slated to be a suicide pilot. There were alternate plans to hijack a 12th commercial airliner and use that instead of the small aircraft, probably due to the Manila cell's growing frustration with explosives. Testing explosives in a house or apartment is dangerous, and it can easily give away a terrorist plot. Khalid Sheik Mohammed probably made the alternate plan. A report from the Philippines to the United States on January 20, 1995 stated, "What the subject has in his mind is that he will board any American commercial aircraft pretending to be an ordinary passenger. Then he will hijack said aircraft, control its cockpit and dive it at the CIA headquarters." Another plot that was considered would have involved the hijacking of more airplanes. The World Trade Center (New York City, New York), The Pentagon (Arlington, Virginia), the United States Capitol (Washington, D.C.), the White House (Washington, D.C.), the Sears Tower (Chicago, Illinois), and the U.S Bank Tower (Los Angeles, California), would have been the likely targets. In his confession to Filipino investigators, prior to the foiling of Operation Bojinka, Abdul Hakim Murad said that this part of the plot was dropped since the Manila cell could not recruit enough people to implement other hijackings. This plot would eventually be the base plot for the September 11 attacks which involved hijacking commercial airliners, as opposed to small aircraft loaded with explosives, and crashing them into their intended targets. However, only the World Trade Center (which was destroyed) and The Pentagon (which suffered partial damage) were hit. The plot was abandoned after an apartment fire at the six-story Doña Josefa apartments occurred in Manila, Philippines, on the evening of Friday, January 6, 1995. The fire occurred before Pope John Paul II was scheduled to visit the Philippines on January 12. According to the initial accounts of the Philippine authorities, Abdul Hakim Murad started a chemical fire in the kitchen sink in Room 603 in the 6th floor of the Doña Josefa apartment by pouring water on a substance. The fire was spotted at about 11 pm after residents complained about a strange odour. Edith Guerrera, the owner of the apartments, called the fire brigade, but the fire went out unassisted. Yousef and Murad had told the firefighters to stay away before they fled. Police Major Francisco F. Bautista and his men, including watch commander Aida D. Fariscal, decided to investigate the situation and saw four hot plates in their packing crates, what looked like cotton batting soaked in a beige solution, and loops of green, red, blue, and yellow electrical wiring. The telephone rang, and the police ran downstairs, thinking that it was a trap.Fa riscal had been suspicious of the men in Room 603 due to the recent wave of bombings (committed by Yousef) that hit Metro Manila and Philippine Airlines Flight 434. Seeking a search warrant, they left and asked 11 judges before finding one that would grant a warrant. After police discovered the evidence, they arrested a man who called himself "Ahmed Saeed." "Saeed", who later proved to be Murad, claimed that he was a commercial pilot who was on his way to the precinct house to explain that what he claimed to be firecrackers had gone off. Murad initially tried to run away, but he was arrested after he tripped over a tree root. The arresting officer, having lost his handcuffs, improvised a solution by tying Murad's hands with the elastic cord taken from the officer's raincoat. Murad was hauled to the precinct in a taxi van with the help of two other people. He offered 110,740 Philippine pesos (US$2,000) to the policemen if they would agree to let him go, but the officers refused. At the precinct, Murad signed a statement saying that he was innocent and that he was a tourist visiting his friend in his chemical import/export business. He then mumbled about "two Satans that must be destroyed: the Pope and America." 55-year-old Fariscal was later depicted (although by a much younger actress) in the 2006 docudrama The Path to 9/11, in which US agencies in the script gave her much credit. An actress portrays her in the Mayday episode "Bomb on Board." The widow of a slain police officer, she had spent seventeen years as a homemaker before enrolling in the police department in 1977. She became well known in her home nation, which awarded her the equivalent of 33,222 pesos ($700) and a trip to Taiwan. The CIA awarded her a certificate reading "in recognition of your personal outstanding efforts and co-operation." Her decision to investigate the fire was key to disrupting the plot and forcing Yousef to flee. When the officers returned to Suite 603 at 2:30 am on January 7, they found: street maps of Manila with routes plotting the papal motorcade, a rosary, a photograph of the pontiff, bibles, crucifixes, papal confessions, and priest clothing, including robes and collars. This collection of objects, and a phone message from a tailor reminding the occupant that "the cassock was ready to be tried on", along with the fact of the Pope's impending visit, was enough for Police Major Francisco F. Bautista to infer that an assassination plot had been interrupted. A search warrant was granted by 4 am on January 7. The most conclusive piece of evidence found was a manual written in Arabic on how to build a liquid bomb. Stacks of 12 false passports, including Norwegian, Afghan, Saudi, and Pakistani were also found in the apartment. Investigators found a business card from Mohammed Jamal Khalifa; Saeed apparently possessed five telephone numbers from Khalifa. Investigators also found phone numbers for Rose Masquera, Mohammed's girlfriend. Yousef's project was discovered on four floppy disks and an off-white Toshiba laptop inside his apartment, two weeks before the plot would have been implemented. Several encrypted files on the hard drive contained flight schedules, calculations of detonation times, and other items. The first string of text in one of the files states, "All people who support the U.S. government are our targets in our future plans and that is because all those people are responsible for their government's actions and they support the U.S. foreign policy and are satisfied with it. We will hit all U.S. nuclear targets. If the U.S. government keeps supporting Israel, then we will continue to carry out operations inside and outside the United States to include..." and the text ends. A file named "Bojinka" lists the 11 flights between Asia and the United States, which were grouped under five codenames. Strings were found, such as "SETTING: 9:30 pm to 10:30 pm TIMER: 23HR. BOJINKA: 20:30-21:30 NRT Date 5" (for United flight 80), and "SETTING: 8:30-9:00. TIMER: 10HR. BOJINKA: 19:30-20:00 NRT Date 4" (for Northwest Flight 30).[7] The laptop had names of dozens of associates, including some photographs of a few of them and including contact information for Mohammed Jamal Khalifa. They contained records of information about five-star hotels, dealings with a London trading corporation, a meat market owner in Malaysia, and an Islamic center in Tucson, Arizona. Information about how money moved through an Abu Dhabi banking firm was found. A communication signed "Khalid Shaikh + Bojinka" was also found on Yousef's computer that threatened to attack targets "in response to the financial, political and military assistance given to the Jewish state in the occupied land of Palestine by the United States Government." The letter also said that the bombers claimed to have "ability to make and use chemicals and poisonous gas... for use against vital institutions and populations and the sources of drinking water." The letter also threatened to assassinate Fidel V. Ramos, the President of the Philippines at the time, as well as attack aircraft if the United States did not meet the group's demands. The letter said that the group claiming responsibility was the "Fifth Division of the Liberation Army".[7] The evidence found at the Doña Josefa filled three police vans. U.S. investigators did not find the connection with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed to al-Qaeda until several years later. The 9/11 attacks evolved from the original Bojinka plot Khalid Sheikh Mohammed decided that explosives were too risky to use in his next plot, and chose instead to use airplanes. The plot was later revised and executed during the September 11 attacks. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was arrested in Rawalpindi, Pakistan in 2003. Yousef filed a motion for a new trial in 2001. The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit heard the case on May 3, 2002, and announced on April 3, 2003 the decision that Yousef and his partners were to remain incarcerated.

Tommy and I recorded this interview in person at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging where we were attending Dr. Dale Bredesen’s training for reversing cognitive decline. If you’ve yet to discover Dr. Bredesen’s amazing work, I’d highly recommend his STEM-Talk interview. My attempt to capture the impressiveness of the Buck Institute leaves a lot to be desired, but since I promised a photo during the recording, here it is: We love our supplements at Nourish Balance Thrive, and we regularly recommend them to the people we work with, usually when indicated by a test result. What we’re less keen on is expensive nonsense with no human data or even plausible mechanism of action. Oxaloacetate falls into this category, and in this interview, you'll learn enough biochemistry to understand why you should save your money. As always, we reserve the right to be proven wrong! In the second part of this interview, you'll learn about why it's essential to eat to fuel for your activity. We're huge fans of a ketogenic diet for a handful of very specific applications, but not as a general recommendation, especially for athletes engaging in highly glycolytic activities like Crossfit and obstacle course racing. A 74-year-old man with metastatic renal cell carcinoma and a history of cardiac failure was treated with sunitinib malate. MUGA echocardiography could not detect a relevant change in the ejection fraction although the clinical situation of the patient worsened dramatically. The only parameter to hint at the deteriorated cardiac function was plasma N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (BNP). Finally, the patient died after only one cycle of sunitinib treatment. We propose to prospectively include BNP for the early detection of cardiovascular decompensation in high-risk patients. Future studies concerning the relevance of BNP in drug-related cardiotoxicity are urgently needed. Copyright (C) 2010 S. Karger AG, Basel
