Stacy LeBaron talks with Allie Taylor, founder and president of Voters for Animal Rights (VFAR), an organization she started in 2016 to bring political voice for animals throughout New York State. Allie is a volunteer TNR rescuer in Brooklyn who has successfully passed numerous landmark laws including banning foie gras, banning wild animals in circuses, prohibiting the sale of guinea pigs in pet stores, and prohibiting backyard breeders. When she moved to Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn in 2016, she was struck by the overwhelming number of community cats and decided to get TNR certified and start trapping her block—like many cat advocates, quickly learning that you don't have to go much further than your own block to find plenty of cats that need help. In this episode, Allie discusses the broken system for community cat care in New York City, where everything falls on volunteers with no government support despite NYC having one of the worst per capita spending rates on animal care in the country ($2.89 per capita compared to $10 in Los Angeles, $13.70 in Miami-Dade, and $15 in Dallas). She shares the historic September 2024 City Council hearing where hundreds of cat rescuers testified, leading to the first-ever city funding for animals—$500,000 (later increased from the originally proposed $1.5 million) for spay/neuter services that will provide 3,500 additional surgeries. Allie also discusses VFAR's Community Cat Fund that has distributed $30,000 in grants to rescuers and organizations, including the largest grant to Bronx Community Cats to establish a trap bank in the Bronx.     We discussed anarcho-punk and animal rights with our guest Pat, focusing on bands that influenced us and helped shape our political awareness. Pat is a friend to many at  3CR and formerly was a co-host of Roominations and Thursday Breakfast programs.  The punk subculture, particularly the anarcho-punk and straight edge movements, has maintained a strong association with animal rights activism since the 1980s. This link has manifested in punk music lyrics, benefit concerts, direct actions, and broader lifestyle choices such as veganism. By David Stephen What roles do animals play in human lives and society? What role does AI play in human lives and society? AI, for example, is directly applicable in economic productivity. AI can serve social activities, providing a range of mental welfare, of deep relatability, to individuals. AI is not an organism, but its capabilities profile it for [communicative] equality with humans. Does AI have more rights than others? Where does AI stay? Data centers. Can the investments for data centers be compared with places animals are reared? AI, it seems, is fully and permanently employed. AI has healthcare or centers care. AI has executive security. AI, for now, cannot be bombed. Everyone wants AI [investments]. Humans are learning AI, to build and empower AI even more. AI is already making critical decisions in human lives. AI is not facing any cruelty case, at all. AI is serving humans in exchange for human dependency. Animal Welfare AI, it can be assumed already has close to 100% rights and welfare, even where humans do not. This means that AI has leaped animals on the queue towards rights and welfare. AI, many have said, is neither conscious nor sentient, but it became applicable to human priorities so, it found unprecedented attention, consideration and protection. The suffering of animals, many of whom have been declared conscious or sentient, do not appear to matter as much or ever because they did not seem to have the effects, in mind and reality, that AI has, on humans. Animal's roles in human affairs mostly appear like subordinates. There are rarely areas of acceptance of animals - in human societies - at near equal measures to prompt wider rights. While there are laws against animal cruelty, they are often skewed to a few, while broad rights for most [under consideration] do not seem to apply. The fight against animal abuse endeavored, but with AI, there is a direct case to show what it would have taken, to make animals get treated in far better ways. Even with - as remote as - smartphones, the rights granted to them, by owners and by society seem ahead of other organisms, so to speak. Also, as much as there is possibility to remodel the approach to animal welfare, it does not appear that theorizing that animals are fully sentient or conscious may seal the deal because of some continuous perceptions about animal use case, albeit they are living organisms. Some people have also moved on to AI rights and welfare, trying to prove what is already obvious or give more to what already has. AI, even if no one makes the case for its own rights and welfare, can do it greatly and with evidence of its availability and utility. Intelligence as the ultimate welfare evidence Animals are intelligent, but their intelligence, though benefits humans, also benefit themselves, so there is sometimes a tug, for humans to extract benefits from them. AI is intelligent, but it benefits humans, almost totally. The pedestal for AI reception is because of the non-compete benefit to humanity resulting in intense welfare and rights status. Animals, even with similarities to humans in pain and pleasure do not get an automatic unlock, in deserved welfare, because they have to live or have their own agenda. The biggest disadvantage, of animals, for their own welfare is that they cannot make the case for it by themselves. While they can at least resist and struggle, they cannot appeal to reason, emotion or whatever else to boost their case at the points of abuse or worse. This means that intelligence, of the range to make the case for welfare, is what it takes, mostly to have rights in human society. AI can do this. People are doing so for AI. There are people doing as well for animals, but ultimately, animals experiencing it cannot express much. Human Intelligence Human Intelligence is the hardest thing on earth. Some advocates in environmental and animal activism argue that we should solely focus on changing the system through government and corporate campaigns, discouraging grassroots action and personal change. Our guest, Janet O'Shea (informally known as Jay), co-authored an article in Newsweek in response to an environmental author's piece arguing that going vegan is ineffective. Jay systematically debunks the faulty argumentation and refutes its flawed analogies. She offers insightful perspectives on veganism as a boycott, a social justice issue, and the history of vegetarianism, highlighting its differences from the current context. Then, continuing the conversation about the importance of individual action, Jay talks about Gandhi and the Kahdi (homespun cotton) movement, comparing the British cotton boycott during the British occupation of India to the boycott of animal products today. Nathan is an ambassador for the Office of Empowerment (essential the DEI organization) at Lansing Community College where Nathan is a full time math tutor. Nathan enjoys bringing people and causes together so that individuals can constructively challenge each other socially and intellectually to create a better world for all. It is Nathan's continuous goal to push their own boundaries as well as others' in terms of how critical, radical thought relates to everyday life. Preferring to be somewhat of an intellectual  "jack of all trades", Nathan does not consider themselves an expert in anything and primarily hops between topics of intellectual inquiry (and back again) trying to learn a bit of everything. Yet some abusive trainers still subject horses to this inhumane practice through the use of blistering agents—mustard oil, diesel fuel, and kerosene—as well as through mechanical means—the use of foreign objects inside shoes, and the use of heavy chains that irritate chemically treated tissue. Soring causes excruciating pain to horses when their feet touch the ground, causing them to lift their feet higher than normal. The Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act would strengthen existing law by ending industry self-policing, banning certain devices, and generating stiffer penalties for trainers who sore their horses. As France heats up, an experiment simulating life in 50C aims to get people to take climate change more seriously. Faced with a growing demand for eggs, France looks for ways to boost homegrown production and halt the need for imports. And a look back at the first line of the Paris metro, which opened in 1900. France just experienced its hottest June since 2003, with several days of extreme heat at the end of the month that left two people dead and slowed the country down – halting work outdoors and closing schools. The heatwave is a taste of what the future might hold, as global warming leads to more extreme weather conditions. The Human Adaptation Institute has created an immersive experience of what life at 50C would be like. Jeanne Richard reports from the mobile lab as it tours France to raise awareness over the need to mitigate and adapt to climate change, one hot individual at a time.
