The International Monetary Fund yesterday revised upward its global growth projections for the year, after better-than-expected data on spending by American households and businesses, and in other countries, and Europe's handling of its energy crisis, CNBC reports. Also in this report, pet fish apparently changed their owner's Nintendo username, downloaded a new avatar, set up a PayPal account and even charged his credit card, CNN reports. And, after getting an MBA, ChatGPT is now fixing software bugs. Notes: The International Monetary Fund yesterday revised upward its global growth projections for the year, after better-than-expected data on spending by American households and businesses, and in other countries, and Europe's handling of its energy crisis, CNBC reports. The fund warned that higher interest rates and Russia's invasion of Ukraine were still reasons for worry. In its latest economic update, the IMF said the global economy will grow 2.9 percent this year — which represents a 0.2 percentage point improvement from its previous forecast in October. However, it said that number would still mean a fall from an expansion of 3.4 percent in 2022. It also revised its projection for 2024 down to 3.1 percent. “Growth will remain weak by historical standards, as the fight against inflation and Russia's war in Ukraine weigh on activity,” Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, director of the research department at the IMF, said in a blog post. Apple is working on a foldable iPad for 2024, CNBC reported yesterday, citing well-known Apple watcher Ming-Chi Kuo. The analyst had previously predicted a foldable iPhone for 2024. Facebook can secretly drain its users' cellphone batteries, a former employee contends in a lawsuit, New York Post reports. The practice, known as “negative testing,” allows tech companies to “surreptitiously” run down a phone's battery in the name of testing features or issues such as how fast their app runs or how an image might load, according to data scientist George Hayward, the New York Post reports. Hayward said in a Manhattan Federal Court lawsuit that he was fired in November for refusing to participate in negative testing. The lawsuit, which sought unspecified damages, has since been withdrawn because Hayward is required to go to arbitration, according to New York Post. Computer science researchers from Johannes Gutenberg University and University College London, have found that ChatGPT can fix bugs in software code quite well. In fact, it can outperform existing bug-fixing programs, because of its ability to ask for more information and learn from that. Mercedes-Benz says it is the world's first automotive company to introduce SAE Level-3 conditionally automated driving. SAE previously for the Society of Automotive Engineers, an organisation developing automotive standards in the US. It is not called SAE International. And Level-3 autonomy refers to a stage where the car can take over certain driving functions although the driver is expected to be always ready to take back control. Pet fish playing a video game in Japan managed to log on to the Nintendo Switch store, change their owner's avatar, set up a Pay Pal account and rack up a credit card bill, CNN reports. And it was all live-streamed on the internet.

Cathy Dixon is the Sr. Director of Global Human Resources at Automation Anywhere, a leading software company that specializes in providing robotic process automation software that helps businesses systematize their processes. In this role, Cathy serves as the HR Business Partner for all international locations and the central point of contact for all management and employees. Before Automation Anywhere, Cathy worked in HR and Administrative roles for companies like HotChalk, Inc., Silicon Image, Harrah’s Entertainment, and many others. She was also an early employee of Apple in the 1970s and 1980s, where she served as the Manager of Compensation and Benefits. In this episode… Have you ever realized with awe that you are participating in something legendary? Do you ever wonder what it would be like to go back in time and work for one of the giants of the tech industry in the ‘80s and ‘90s? If so, you’re in luck—Cathy Dixon is here to share her experience with you. Cathy Dixon began her career serendipitously. As a young professional with little experience, Cathy got the opportunity to work for a new tech startup: Apple. Though working as an early employee at Apple might sound dreamy, the reality of Apple’s workplace culture was complicated, to say the least. So, how did Cathy land a job at Apple, navigate its heightening interpersonal complexities, and pave a successful career for herself after leaving Apple in 1987? In this episode of Next Wave Leadership, Cathy Dixon, Sr. Director of Global Human Resources at Automation Anywhere, sits down with Dov Pollack to talk about her storied career in the tech industry. Listen in as Cathy discusses working as an early employee at Apple, living in Hawaii for 12 years after leaving Silicon Valley, and the work she is doing today with Nancy Hauge to cultivate high-quality workplace cultures everywhere. Stay tuned!

The timing of Disney's announcement that Bob Iger was stepping down from the CEO role flies in the face of everything we know about Bob Iger. Iger is meticulous in planning and process-oriented. To announce a CEO change intra-quarter does not make sense from a timing standpoint. It suggests an outside catalyst in our view. Our best guess would be that Apple reached out to negotiate an acquisition of the Walt Disney Corporation, specifically the direct-to-consumer and content-related assets. This episode is sponsored by Colorist Society International and Mixinglight.com. Director, writer, and colorist, Alexis Van Hurkman joins me on this episode of the Colorist Podcast. There’s been many twists and turns in the career of Alexis Van Hurkman. He bounced around from audio, editorial, graphics, and visual effects. Ultimately, each of those steps in his journey contributed to his skills as a colorist. Along with grading his own projects, he’s finished programs for The History Channel, The Learning Channel, BBC Four, and WNET. Many listeners will recognize Alexis’s book titles, “The Color Correction Handbook” and “The Color Correction Look Book,” as well as the manuals for Apple Color, Final Cut Pro, and DaVinci Resolve. He’s also created several training titles with Ripple Training, featuring the newest features in Resolve. This epic podcast was one of the longest I’ve recorded yet. So long, in fact, that I’ve decided to split it up into two separate episodes. There’s a ton of great info and I didn’t want to lose any of it. In the first part, we talk about: The complicated path in becoming a colorist How writing increased his color knowledge and skills How he ended up working at Apple Working with and without a color control panel How the Fairlight page effects colorists Parallels between audio and color Learning to work in a client driven environment Visual Effects and how it contributes to a colorist’s skills Starting his own one man boutique grading facility Alexis Van Hurkman Blog Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Ripple Training Amazon: Titles by Alexis Van Hurkman This episode is sponsored by: Colorist Society International For more information on how you can become a member, visit, www.coloristsociety.com.
