Hakan Yilmaz is an airline management and operations consultant, and a longtime listener to the show. He returns to the podcast to share everything relevant in aviation today, what he sees through his work and travels.Notably, we discuss the trend of the enhancement (and increase) of the premium part of the flying experience, as opposed to an apparent worsening of flying in economy, including what is the perceived value of premium versus the actual value (including the hiccups of seat certification). We also debate whether low cost airlines' glory years are behind them (Ryanair being the exception), whether AI is more than a buzzword for airlines (besides those pesky chat bots), how narrow bodies are creating new opportunities for medium to long haul travel (is United the de facto third Japanese carrier?! Will they ever have a Pokemon livery then??), and what is the future global outlook for air travel.Does Finnair have the best business seat there is? Can Kirby make United an Emirates? Other good questions we touch on (plus quoting Sir Tim Clark, the Emirates Almighty, is often a good idea).Hakan can be found on Twitter:https://x.com/LAflyrThe Lufthansa book we mention:https://www.amazon.com/Lufthansa-First-Years-Hartmut-Berghoff/dp/3791393898The seat map site that is taking over the world:https://www.aerolopa.comHakan appeared in episodes 124 in 2023, and 140 in 2024. Like Bond, he will return. Happy flying!_____A show created and hosted by Paul Papadimitriou: Instagram - LinkedInThe show is on Instagram - Facebook - Bluesky - more links on the websiteVideo and audio on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube and wherever you podcast.

Marine One & Passenger Jet Near Miss at Reagan National NTSB Report Out - Episode 345

Flight Safety Detectives

Marine One. A departing passenger jet. A communications failure. And a safety system that didn't work as intended. What really happened on August 4, 2026, when President Trump's Marine One helicopter departed the White House area at almost the same time an Envoy Air Embraer E170 was taking off from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport? In this episode of Flight Safety Detectives, Todd Curtis and John Goglia take a close look at the NTSB's preliminary report and what it reveals about one of the most closely watched aviation incidents of the year. Marine One flights are supposed to receive special handling: air traffic controllers should get a three-minute warning before the helicopter departs, allowing departing traffic at National Airport to be stopped. But on August 4, that warning never reached the controllers. The result? Marine One and the regional jet were airborne in the same area at the same time. Todd and John break down the communications failure, the unique challenges of operating around Reagan National, and why meeting the FAA's minimum separation requirements isn't necessarily enough when special procedures are supposed to protect a presidential helicopter. Todd also revisits several assumptions he and John made immediately after the incident. John brings a unique perspective from his years at the NTSB, explaining just how difficult it can be to manage the extraordinarily complex airspace around National Airport and why he believes more needs to be done to address the underlying safety challenges. And there's an even bigger reason to pay attention: another Marine One communications problem occurred on August 27—just after the NTSB released its preliminary findings from the August 4 incident. What does this second communications problem tell us about whether the underlying safety issues have really been fixed? Watch this episode for Todd and John's detailed analysis of the NTSB findings, the communication breakdown, the challenges of protecting the airspace around Reagan National, and the lessons aviation safety professionals should take from this incident. They discuss how brokers and underwriters evaluate pilots, aircraft, and operations—and why the best outcomes come from communication, preparation, and understanding the bigger picture.Ryan and Michael explain the difference between shopping for insurance and choosing the right broker, the role curiosity plays in building a strong application, and how underwriters work with clients to find solutions instead of simply saying no.From navigating changing insurance markets to understanding how career paths can take unexpected turns, this conversation offers valuable insight into one of the most important parts of aviation that often happens behind the scenes.Thank you to this episode's sponsors, Enstrom, Hillsboro Heli Academy and Robinson Helicopter.

In this powerful episode (176) of the Psychosocial Safety USA Podcast, Dr. I. David Daniels sits down with aviation safety expert and cross‑disciplinary researcher Dr. Angeline Ram for a conversation that reshapes how we think about safety in one of the world's most regulated industries.Aviation is known for precision, discipline, and near‑flawless physical safety. But beneath the checklists and compliance culture lies a deeper truth: psychological health and safety is the missing link in the aviation safety ecosystem.Dr. Ram shares her lived experience across global aviation operations — from the Middle East to Canada — and reveals how incivility, identity‑based stressors, and inequitable workplace structures quietly undermine reporting cultures, weaken engagement, and increase risk. She explains why workers often stay silent, how power and occupational status shape who gets heard, and why even safety managers can feel unsafe speaking up.Together, Dr. Daniels and Dr. Ram explore:Why aviation's safety systems overlook the human experienceHow identity, status, and culture shape reporting behaviorThe hidden cost of incivility and everyday disrespectWhy workers choose coping over reportingHow grassroots movements are pushing psychological safety forwardWhat the next decade of aviation safety must includeThis episode is a must‑listen for leaders, safety professionals, and anyone who believes that true safety requires more than procedures — it requires people who feel safe, respected, and empowered.Tune in and learn how psychosocial safety is becoming aviation's new frontier.

In June 1979, a group of U.S. Forest Service employees and volunteers boarded a routine flight into the remote Idaho backcountry to begin another summer season at the Moose Creek Ranger District. They never arrived. When both engines of their DC-3 failed over the narrow Selway River canyon, the pilots fought to keep the powerless aircraft in the air as the passengers prepared for the worst. What followed was a remarkable story of survival, an enormous wilderness rescue effort, and an investigation that uncovered the failures behind the deadliest aviation disaster in U.S. Forest Service history. Send us Fan MailA decade before Amelia Earhart became a household name, Harriet Quimby made aviation history. In 1911, Quimby became the first woman in the United States to earn a pilot's license. The following year, she became the first woman to fly solo across the English Channel—a dangerous and extraordinary achievement at a time when aviation itself was still in its infancy. And then history largely forgot her.In this episode I talk with longtime television journalist and author Don Dahler about his biography Fearless: Harriet Quimby, a Life Without Limit. He shares Quimby's beginnings on a struggling Michigan farm; her successful career as a journalist, critic, and travel writer; her determination to learn to fly despite widespread resistance to women in aviation; her ingenious plum-colored flying suit; and the extraordinary 1912 English Channel flight whose moment in the headlines was eclipsed by the sinking of the Titanic. And Harriet was much more than a pilot. Don describes a fiercely independent woman who traveled the world, wrote fearlessly, resisted the limitations society placed on women, supported her family, wrote screenplays, and imagined an eventual career as a novelist—a future cut short when she died in an aviation accident at just 37.We also wander into Don's own fascinating story. A former CBS News correspondent and war reporter, Don is the author of the memoir Souvenirs from an Absurd Life. We talk about journalism, adventure, writing, encounters from Ethiopia to Grenada, retirement, curiosity, and what a lifetime spent deliberately seeking out the wider world has taught him.And near the end, our conversation circles back to the word at the heart of Harriet's story: fearless. Is anyone really fearless? Or is courage something more interesting—the ability to acknowledge fear, accept the risk, and keep doing the thing that matters anyway?Did you know you can support your local independent bookshop and me by shopping through my Bookshop.org affiliate links on my website? In 1999, a handful of people gathered at a dusty Namibian airfield to meet two men flying weight-shift microlights around the world. One of them was Mike Blyth. Watching from the crowd was a boy who had never left the country, whose family couldn't afford much flying, and who had no real concept of where these men had come from — only that whatever they were doing, he wanted to do it too.Twenty-five years later, JP Schulze has flown around the world himself, built the first Sling High Wing off the line — designed by the same Mike Blyth — and become one of the most distinctive filmmakers in aviation. This one took a while to make happen. We finally met at Oshkosh this year, and JP is candid about being a naturally shy person who ended up with a career in front of a camera. He grew up in Namibia with no art classes and no creative outlets, thinking in German and Afrikaans, teaching himself English from the Discovery Channel at eight years old. He was taking the controls of his dad's microlight at ten. He funded his first licence by free-diving for crayfish, selling snake venom, and restringing tennis rackets. The around-the-world trip nearly didn't happen twice. Sponsors walked after a Cirrus ditched near Hawaii and the CAPS pull ran on every news channel — nobody wanted their logo on a small plane over an ocean. So JP and Louis Cole self-funded it, and JP is honest about what that cost: the fourteen-hour legs, the multi-hour shouting match somewhere between Fiji and Kiribati, and the weight of being responsible for a non-pilot's life for the first time.In this episode:Meeting Mike Blyth in 1999 — and building his airplane twenty years laterGrowing up flying "sketchy" weight-shift trikes over the African bushWhy Southern Africa has a GA scene almost nobody expectsMoving to New Zealand at seventeen and rebuilding from scratch in a third languageMeeting Louis Cole on a sand dune and having his life change in a daySigning with Discovery, then watching the money disappearWhat flying around the world actually took — and why he'd do it againInsisting on being the first to build the Sling High Wing, then helping write the manualWhy he refuses to post weekly, and what that has cost himThe sunglasses he built because a $350 pair costs $10 to makeWhy print still matters, and what we both think is at stakeWe also recorded a second conversation about the around-the-world flight itself — that one is exclusive to the magazine, with the audio released free a year after publication.Happy Flying,JustinSupport JP - otavi.co best sunglasses for pilotsPilot to Pilot Magazine — Volume 003 is out now. Can you verify that a private charter is legal and safe before you board—and before your money moves? CoachAir founder and CEO Jacob Baumler joins Dr. Wayne Pernell to reveal a largely hidden problem within private aviation: passengers may have no simple way to confirm an operator's authority, aircraft status, pilot qualifications, insurance, and trip legality. Jacob's mission began after he personally experienced an illegal charter and fraud. In response, he and his wife founded CoachAir to help replace aviation's fragmented, trust-based processes with connected verification and protected transactions. In this episode: The personal experience that inspired CoachAir• What makes a private charter legal or illegal• Why Part 135 certification matters• How passengers can verify before they fly• Why aviation still relies on paper, spreadsheets, and phone calls• How protected payments can serve passengers and operators• How better aircraft visibility could improve emergency response• What FBOs and vertiports do• How air taxis will change transportation• Why advanced air mobility needs verified trust• Jacob's leadership vision for scaling CoachAir• The future of safer, frictionless aviation Jacob also explains why this issue extends beyond today's private travelers. As air taxis, electric aircraft, drones, and other new forms of mobility become more accessible, the industry will need a safety and trust infrastructure capable of scaling with them. Mission aviation is opening doors for the gospel in places where traditional ministry can be difficult to reach. In this episode of Truth Talk Live, Pius Guthrie shares his journey from being afraid of flying to discovering a passion for aviation and a calling to serve God through it. He discusses his training at Liberty University, the importance of Christian education, and his desire to follow God wherever He leads. The conversation also highlights the impact mission pilots can have in bringing the gospel, Bibles, and hope to remote communities around the world. Pius challenges listeners to put Jesus first every morning, throughout the day, and every night, pointing to Matthew 22:37 as a guiding verse.

What can a few grains of asteroid dust tell us about the origins of life on Earth? In this episode, Host Rick Crandall talks with NASA astrochemist José C. Aponte about the organic chemistry preserved inside asteroid Bennu. From NASA's OSIRIS-REx sample-return mission to amino acids, nucleobases, and the mystery of life's left-handed molecules, Aponte explains how scientists search for clues to our chemical origins. This one is going to be cool! What you'll hear:Why NASA traveled to Bennu: Pristine asteroid material offers evidence that meteorites altered by Earth's environment cannot. How scientists prevent contamination: A fingerprint can contain more organic material than the tiny Bennu samples researchers analyze. What researchers discovered: Bennu contains 14 of the 20 amino acids used to build proteins and all five nucleobases found in DNA and RNA.Why molecular diversity matters: Thousands of nitrogen-bearing compounds reveal the complex chemical environment of the early solar system. How a mass spectrometer works: Aponte explains how scientists use molecular fragments to identify compounds inside asteroid material. The mystery of left-handed amino acids: Life uses almost exclusively one mirror-image form, but scientists still do not know why.The search for tryptophan: Researchers found tentative evidence that could represent the first extraterrestrial detection of this complex amino acid. What Bennu's salts reveal: Minerals formed through evaporating water suggest Bennu's material originated in a different part of the solar system.Learn More:Read the full show notes on the Wings Over the Rockies websiteDonate to Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space MuseumSubscribe and leave a review to support the showThis episode is supported in part by United Airlines.

Aviation News Talk podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 20, 2026 60:33

In Episode 425 of Aviation News Talk, Max talks with retired Air Force General David Brubaker about STEM Flights, a nonprofit organization that pairs middle- and high-school students with volunteer pilot mentors for free, one-on-one aviation experiences designed to introduce them to careers in aviation, aerospace, engineering, and other STEM fields. STEM Flights grew out of Brubaker's own experience after retiring from the Air Force in 2005. During his military career, he flew aircraft including the F-4 and F-16 and finished his career with an assignment at the Pentagon. After retiring, he became active in general aviation and began taking young people flying. But Brubaker didn't simply give them airplane rides. He expected them to participate. They helped with navigation, looked at the instrumentation, worked with the radios, and often took the controls themselves. Years later, he began hearing back from some of those young people. Several had gone on to study aviation, aerospace, engineering, and other technical subjects. One young woman eventually earned her ratings, joined the West Virginia Air National Guard, and became a C-130 pilot. Those experiences helped Brubaker recognize that pilots could have an enormous influence on the career choices of young people simply by sharing aviation with them in a meaningful way. His children encouraged him to turn what he was doing informally into a nonprofit, and STEM Flights was launched in 2018. Today, STEM Flights connects students with volunteer pilot mentors around the country. Students don't simply show up at an airport for a free ride. They apply to the program, receive a recommendation, select a mission based on their interests, and complete homework before being paired with a pilot. That preparation is part of what makes STEM Flights different. Brubaker describes the program as a more intensive, personal experience than a typical introductory airplane ride. A student is paired one-on-one with a pilot mentor, and the pilot learns about the student's interests before the flight. On the day of the mission, they discuss safety and learning objectives, preflight the airplane, and then head into the air. Once they reach a safe altitude, the student usually gets the controls. They may learn about navigation, aircraft instrumentation and communications, and Brubaker says he likes to have each student make at least one radio call. But the most powerful moment often comes when the student realizes that he or she is actually flying the airplane. Brubaker tells the story of one reluctant young man whose mother encouraged him to participate. On the ground, the student appeared completely uninterested, and Brubaker wondered whether the flight would accomplish anything. Then they took off. Within minutes of taking the controls, the boy came alive. He started participating, asking questions, and enthusiastically flying the airplane. A couple of weeks later, Brubaker received a letter from the boy's mother. She explained that her son had approached life believing it was better not to try than to try and fail. Flying an airplane—something he never imagined he could possibly do—changed his perception of what he might be capable of accomplishing. That experience illustrates why STEM Flights is about more than simply recruiting future pilots. Students have gone on to pursue aircraft maintenance, avionics, aerospace engineering, military aviation, and other technical fields. Brubaker says dozens have attended universities with aviation or engineering programs, and STEM Flights continues supporting students after their flights through a program called Flight Following. Flight Following connects participants with information about scholarships, flight schools, grants, Civil Air Patrol, and other organizations and programs that can help them continue toward aviation and STEM careers. For pilots listening to Aviation News Talk, one of the most important parts of the conversation is how they can participate. STEM Flights calls its volunteers "pilot mentors," and you don't need to be a flight instructor. Brubaker says pilots generally need a private pilot certificate, at least 250 hours of flight time, appropriate medical and aircraft qualifications, and a background check. You don't necessarily need to own an airplane either. Some pilot mentors rent aircraft or belong to flying clubs, and in some areas STEM Flights has arrangements with local flight schools. The organization has pilot mentors in 49 states, but matching students with available pilots remains a constant challenge. At the time of the interview, Brubaker said roughly 115 young people were waiting to be paired with pilots. After a career that included fighter jets, simulated air combat and pulling nine Gs, Brubaker says mentoring young people offers a different kind of satisfaction. Military flying was intensely focused on accomplishing a mission. STEM Flights provides an opportunity to give something back. And for a general aviation pilot wondering how to help strengthen the future of aviation, the concept is remarkably simple. Share your airplane. Share your experience. Put a young person at the controls. And you may help launch an aviation career that otherwise never would have begun. Todd is a true aviation professional with more than 10,000 hours of rotorcraft flight time, over 1,000 hours in fixed-wing aircraft, and more than 4,100 hours as a Tactical Flight Officer.Throughout his remarkable career, Todd played a pivotal role in training both pilots and Tactical Flight Officers. Alongside his longtime partner, Kevin Means, he helped develop many of the FLIR tactics, techniques, Crew Resource Management principles, and operational procedures that have become standard practice for law enforcement aviation units around the world. In this first episode, we discuss the importance of recording airborne incidents, how that capability evolved within the San Diego Police Department's Air Support Unit, and why those recordings have become such valuable tools for training, accountability, and learning. We also take an in-depth look at aviation safety within a law enforcement aviation unit, with Todd sharing the lessons he's learned from decades of operational flying and leadership.Todd takes us behind the scenes of the legendary San Diego tank pursuit. As the Tactical Flight Officer during the incident, he captured the entire 30-minute pursuit on video and shares the complete story—from what was happening in the aircraft to the critical decisions being made in real time.Whether you're a pilot, Tactical Flight Officer, or simply fascinated by aviation and police operations, these are conversations you won't want to miss.YouTube video clips courtesy of CBS 8 San Diego Evening News.  The full video can be watched here.Thank you to our sponsors Onboard Systems Hoist and Winch, Robinson Helicopter and Spectrolab.
