In this episode, we speak with Suzanne Neufang, CEO of the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA), who shares how the world's leading business travel association is transforming corporate travel to accelerate aviation decarbonisation through industry collaboration.Neufang discusses:How sustainability priorities amongst travel managers more than doubled from 8% in 2023 to 19% in 2024, though the industry baseline remains at just 1.3 out of 5 on GBTA's sustainability maturity scale. Why sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is the most promising decarbonisation pathway for aviation today, and how corporate customers must play an active role in stimulating market demand through SAF certificate purchases. How GBTA's Sustainability Acceleration Challenge mobilised over 240 companies to benchmark their decarbonisation efforts and identify best practices. Why GBTA takes a pragmatic rather than activist approach, focusing on harmonising standards across the complex corporate travel ecosystem to eliminate inefficiencies. How artificial intelligence holds great promise for optimising travel decisions and emissions tracking, with potential for 10-15% emissions reductions through more efficient air routing alone. Why business travel serves as a catalyst for broader aviation sustainability, given that corporate travellers are the frequent flyers responsible for most airline profits and emissions.Neufang also explains GBTA's three-pronged strategy of bringing the industry together, rallying players around common standards, and building capacity at scale to move the entire travel industry towards more sustainable practices. If you LOVED this episode, you'll also love the conversation we had with Sally Davey, CEO of Travalyst, who shares how the not-for-profit coalition is transforming the travel industry through collaborative data initiatives. Todd Curtis and John Goglia share the unfolding information surrounding a October 20, 2024 crash of an air tour R44 helicopter into a radio tower in Houston. The NTSB investigation continues. The air tour helicopter apparently crashed into the radio tower while the pilot in command was reading back a traffic advisory about a second helicopter in the vicinity. The second helicopter was operated by the same air tour company. The preliminary NTSB report issued less than a month after the accident. Details in the preliminary report and additional information from security cameras show that the pilot of the accident helicopter had the second helicopter in sight and made no major heading changes to avoid hitting the radio tower. Hear Todd's assessment of the alignment of the tower and the helicopters.John and Todd discuss general safety issues of air tour aircraft, including the fact that the ones involved in this crash often lack voice and data recorders. John notes that in his experience the NTSB might not be able to determine a probable cause due to the lack of data.  Don't miss what's to come from the Flight Safety Detectives - subscribe to the Flight Safety Detectives YouTube channel, listen at your favorite podcast service and visit the Flight Safety Detectives website. Kim Becker, President and CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, is leading a bold transformation at the San Diego International Airport—starting from the inside out. We explored how she's intentionally cultivating a culture that supports change, empowers leaders at every level, and aligns with a fast-evolving environment. Coming out of the pandemic, Kim knew the way they worked had shifted. Rather than revert to what was, she saw the opportunity to design something stronger. We heard how she started with the executive team and expanded the conversation across directors and managers—uncovering surprising gaps and building a shared culture statement together. We've seen how she uses everyday team meetings and real-life moments to embed new leadership mindsets, from listening to thoughtful decision-making. It's not a program. It's a way of thinking and working that's now infused into coaching conversations, strategy sessions, and hallway chats. Her story reminds us that culture change doesn't require sweeping declarations—it starts with intention, consistency, and the courage to have real conversations.Key Takeaways:1. Culture Grows from the Inside - Start with leadership alignment but let the full team help shape and own the culture.2. Empowerment Changes Everything - When mid-level leaders are trusted and included, they bring energy and clarity that transforms the whole.3. Real Conversations Matter - Culture shifts happen when we're brave enough to name gaps, share reactions, and stay at the table.4. Make Mindsets Practical - Embedding culture happens when values become part of everyday language, meetings, and habits.5. Start with You - Culture change begins with modeling what you want others to adopt—even before you announce it.Resources MentionedThe Inspire Your Team to Greatness assessment (the Courage Assessment)How can you inspire our team to be more proactive, take ownership and get more done? You demonstrate and empower The Courage of a Leader. Welcome to the Part Time Pilot Audio Ground School Podcast! This podcast takes our free podcast to a whole new level by providing students with every single lesson included in the Part Time Pilot Private Pilot & IFR Ground Schools without a single Ad! On top of that, VIP podcast students get BONUS episodes like Mock Checkrides, Checkride Prep, Expert Interviews and more!   The #1 reason student pilots never end up becoming a private pilot is NOT due to money. The real reason is actually deeper than that. Yes, flight training is expensive. But every student pilot knows this and budgets for it when they decide to do it.   The actual #1 reason a student pilot fails is because they do not have a good, fundamental understanding of the private pilot knowledge they are meant to learn in ground school.   You see when a student does not have a good grasp of this knowledge they get to a point in their flight training where their mind just can't keep up. They start making mistakes and having to redo lessons. And THAT is when it starts getting too expensive.   This audio ground school is meant for the modern day student pilot... aka the part time student pilot. Let's face it, the majority of us have full time responsibilities on top of flight training. Whether it is a job, kids, family, school, etc. we all keep ourselves busy with the things that are important to us. And with today's economy we have to maintain that job just to pay for the training. The modern day student pilot is busy, on the go and always trying to find time throughout his or her day to stay up on their studies. The audio ground school allows them to consume high quality content while walking, running, working out, sitting in traffic, traveling, or even just a break from the boring FAR/AIM or ground school lecture.   Did I meant high quality content? The audio ground school is taken straight out of the 5-star rated Part Time Pilot Online Ground School that has had over 2000 students take and pass their Private Pilot & IFR exams with only 2 total students failing the written. That's a 99.9% success rate! And the 2 that failed? We refunded their cost of ground school and helped them pass on their second attempt. We do this by keeping ground school engaging, fun, light and consumable. We have written lessons, videos, audio lessons, live video lessons, community chats, quizzes, practice tests, flash cards, study guides, eBooks and much more.   Part Time Pilot was created to be a breath of fresh air for student pilots. To be that flight training provider that looks out for them and their needs. So that is just what we are doing with this podcast.     IFR Section 4 Lesson 15: In this Free IFR Ground School lesson we talk about weather forecasts pilots can get from aviationweather.gov and how to navigate the site. Susie gives a tribute to her beloved Brian Wilson. We find out why Amelia Earhart wasn't actually a great pilot (seems like the disappearance should've tipped us off), but instead was just ahead of her time in...influencing. Susie explains how Amelia's famous flight has disturbing similarities to the Titan submersible tragedy. Paul and Alex compare notes on their transatlantic British Airways experiences — from the really bad, to the truly great, the airline needs to dig for those latter gems, its future foundation is here (the IT bugs don't help however, trust ground staff). The cot strategy of the bulkhead seat (not if you're lucky to get a double upgrade though). Do not use the US mobile passport (well, do, but we don't want more people in those queues haha). Alex sees himself at the airport, watches a Hong Kong movie and stares at sad packet of crisps and an old banana (the pantry!). Paul says adieu to an old aircraft seat, celebrates a captaincy, and smiles at a pilot with fat fingers ("Ground, do you copy?"). Do not speculate on the causes of that Air India tragedy, please (or at least, do it in private). Island hopping with Hoper (on a Ferrari-red Robinson R66), and the wonders of high-speed crafts, the super fast ferries of Greece (think of a 747 on water). We mentioned:https://flyhoper.comhttps://www.welcomepickups.com —Follow us, and comment on: Instagram - Bluesky - Threads - Mastodon - Twitter/XComment on each episode, and rate us, on SpotifyReview, and rate us, on Apple PodcastsComment, like, review, and rate us, on FacebookComment on YouTube (there's no video, just audio!)Search for "Layovers" on any podcast service (some direct links are on our website)If we're missing one, or if you have any feedback, let Paul know on Instagram - Threads - Mastodon - Bluesky - Twitter/X

Aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart became the first woman to cross the Atlantic by air on June 18th, 1928… but on this occasion didn't actually fly the plane; she was a passenger aboard the Friendship, a three-engine seaplane piloted by Wilmer Stultz and co-piloted by Louis Gordon.  Originally, a wealthy heiress was meant to take the flight, but her family vetoed it as too dangerous. So Earhart, smart, skilled, and camera-ready, was chosen to be “Lady Lindy”, and that one journey launched her into the stratosphere of fame. She wrote a book, became a Cosmopolitan editor, endorsed everything from cigarettes to watches, and even launched her own fashion line.  In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly revisit Earhart's iconic joyrides, including the one alongside Eleanor Roosevelt; consider the impact of her work to elevate women pilots, given that 95% of pilots are still men; and speculate about one of aviation's greatest mysteries: what happened to her plane on the day she went missing? Almost 40 years after its rebranding as Australian Airlines – and just over 30 years after its merger with Qantas – a consortium is planning to bring back Trans Australia Airlines, or TAA, with an ambitious plan that would see Rex become the resurrected airline's regional arm. While Rex's administrator has knocked back Renaissance Partners' dark-horse bid a second time, the firm is not yet giving up on its goal of turning Darwin into a hub for incoming flights from Australia's north – but could it actually work? Adam and Jake discuss the plan for the new TAA, what it might do for passengers, and whether it could avoid Australia's ever-growing airline graveyard. Plus, Virgin's IPO finally hits the runway next week, big milestones at Western Sydney International Airport, and why the Air India crash doesn't necessarily spell doom for the Dreamliner.

While crashing airplanes have been in the news a lot lately, there's another major problem currently plaguing aviation: the precipitous increase in ground damage incidents, along with their associated costs. Ground damage events occur when the aircraft is not flying, during taxi, aircraft repositioning, loading/unloading, fueling, and maintenance tasks. Our news story and resulting discussion come from the article, “From the Hangar to the Tarmac: Rising Trends in Ground Incidents,” published in the 2025 issue of Jetstream from the insurer Global Aerospace. Special Guest Jermaine Cadogan is the Lead Instructor for a revolutionary training program called the “Aviation Maintenance Never Events,” which was developed by Convergent Performance to provide maintainers and other support personnel effective methods to prevent ground damage events like those described in the article. Tony and “Caddy” discuss the root causes behind this rise in ground damage, the ways rising costs will impact the industry and passengers, how the industry and regulators might try to tackle this critical issue, and why the “Never Events” program is the solution, garnering support from aviation professionals in both the public and private sectors in the decade since its inception.

“If he is lost it will be the most universally regretted single loss we ever had. But that kid ain't going to fail.” This is the story of the high-fliers in early twentieth-century American aviation.  Wright brothers Orville and Wilbur stunned the nation and the world with their pioneering flight in 1903, and since then, aviation has spread its wings, so to speak. The Wright Brothers and other innovators like Glenn Curtiss are innovating and pushing the limit while the Great War takes aviation to new heights altogether.  But when the guns fall silent in Europe, the roar of its plane engines doesn't. Former doughboy pilots and an upcoming generation of postwar aviators have all sorts of uses for these aircraft: crop dusting, photography, high-flying “barnstorming” stunts, and, of course, mail delivery. And as planes get faster and flights get longer; as daring pilots like Charlie “Lucky Lindy” Lindbergh, Howard Hughes, and Amelia Earhart refuse to accept anything short of the “sky's the limit”; as postage and fine-dining passengers take to the skies; the United States will never the be the same. ____ Connect with us on HTDSpodcast.com and go deep into episode bibliographies and book recommendations join discussions in our Facebook community get news and discounts from The HTDS Gazette  come see a live show get HTDS merch or become an HTDS premium member for bonus episodes and other perks.
