The Trawl opens with some festive cheer as Marina shares the daily advent calendar struggles in her house and Jemma enlightens us with her pre-Christmas clog. Then it's onto Farage's 38th BBC Question Time appearance where the ladies discuss motives behind why the BBC politics panel show may as well be called: Farage and Friends. Then onto the shocking events unfolding in the US, where United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson was murdered in broad daylight in what appears to be a protest killing against the ruthlessly for-profit industry. What's most shocking of all, is that the vast public response and sentiment to this brazen and targeted murder seems to be far from sympathetic. Jemma and Marina discuss some of the alleged horror stories from the US healthcare system and the perceived martyrdom of murder suspect Luigi Maglione and what it means, as well as the now famous smile that gave him away to the NYPD. The episode ends with some joyous underrated tweets about 'scientits' and a Christmas flavoured pud from new Trawl fave, Cody Dahler. This week's guest is one of those who understands the nuts and bolts - the iniquities - of the current system - and has ideas of how we can shape something better from the hot mess of corruption and greed in which we're mired. Grace Blakeley is a staff writer at Tribune Magazine and author of several books, including 'Vulture Capitalism: Corporate Crimes, Backdoor Bailouts and the Death of Freedom' in which she  peels back the layers of our economic system, exposing the stark realities hidden beneath the veneer of 'free markets' and 'democratic' institutions.Grace's journey from the New Statesman to the frontlines of political commentary has equipped her with a unique vantage point to critique the fusion of state and corporate power, illuminating the dark corners of corporate greed and government complicity. With a narrative as gripping as a thriller, she exposes the corruption that led to tragedies like the Boeing 737 MAX crashes and the grim theatre of financial crises. In our conversation, Grace challenges the notion that some are born to rule while others to be ruled, advocating for a new democratic settlement that truly empowers people. She shares inspiring examples from Blaenau Ffestiniog to Cooperation Jackson, highlighting communities that are redefining resilience and self-governance. Her call to action is clear: it's time to question, to demand, and to actively participate in shaping a future that is just, equitable, and truly democratic. As we navigate the most critical moment in human history, Grace's insights are not a roadmap toward a world where the many, not the few, hold the power. For anyone feeling the weight of our current system's failures, this episode is a clarion call to join hands, make your voice heard, and be part of the collective effort to weave a future we can all be proud of.For those ready to dive into the mechanics of Grace's analysis and to explore the potential of a society reimagined, visit her website for links to her other books and to upcoming events. Grace's Bio: Grace Blakeley is a staff writer at Tribune magazine, author, and a prominent voice in economic and political commentary. Her work has taken her from the New Statesman to BBC Question Time, and now to the forefront of the movement challenging the entrenched powers of capitalism. With a sharp wit and a clear vision, Grace is not only dissecting the present but also sowing the seeds for a future where democracy and economic justice are not just ideals but realities.https://graceblakeley.co.uk/

Humza Yousaf's using the phrase “Tory-free” umpteen times  when addressing SNP activists, and telling Scottish Tory MPs: “The SNP is coming for you.” seems to have set off a political storm not just among the usual suspects but such SNP luminaries as Pete Wishart and the Aberdeen Independence Movement. Unwarranted pearl clutching? We discuss.Last Wednesday's PMQs saw the unedifying spectacle of Sir Lindsay Hoyle ignoring Dianne Abbott on no less 46 occasions as she tried to speak on the Frank Hester racist comments about Dianne Abbott. Stephen Flynn, yet again, as on BBC Question Time , was an outstanding performer. Lesley asked in her most recent article if performance is all the SNP's presence at Westminster can be?The Hester Tory donations issue, " He was racist but it was half a decade ago and we're keeping the cash", set us thinking about the murky world of UK political party funding. And murky it certainly is.In stark contrast to PMQs, no question is ever answered, Scottish FMQs is an entirely more rigorous affair. Vulture Capitalism Corporate Crimes, Backdoor Bailouts, and the Death of Freedom By Grace Blakeley https://amzn.to/3TxZcV2 Longlisted for the 2024 Women's Prize for Nonfiction A Next Big Idea Book Club Must-Read for March 2024 In the vein of The Shock Doctrine and Evil Geniuses, this timely manifesto from an acclaimed journalist illustrates how corporate and political power brokers have used planned capitalism to advance their own interests at the expense of the rest of us—and how we can take back our economy for all. It's easy to look at the state of the world around us and feel hopeless. We live in an era marked by war, climate crisis, political polarization, and acute inequality—and yet many of us feel powerless to do anything about these profound issues. We've been assured that unfettered capitalism is necessary to ensure our freedom and prosperity, even as we see its corrosive effects proliferating daily. Why, in our age of unchecked corporate power, are most of us living paycheck to paycheck? When the economy falters, why do governments bail out corporations and shareholders but leave everyday people in the dust? Now, economic and political journalist and progressive star on the rise Grace Blakeley exposes the corrupt system that is failing all around us, pulling back the curtain on the free market mythology we have been sold, and showing how, as corporate interests have taken hold, governments have historically been shifting away from competition and democracy and towards monopoly and oligarchy. Tracing over a century of neoliberal planning and backdoor bailouts, Blakeley takes us on a deeply reported tour of the corporate crimes, political maneuvering, and economic manipulation that elites have used to enshrine a global system of “vulture capitalism”—planned capitalist economies that benefit corporations and the uber-wealthy at the expense of the rest of us—at every level, from states to empires. Blakeley exposes the cracks already emerging within capitalism, lighting a path forward for how we can democratize our economy, not just our politics, to ensure true freedom for all.About the author Grace Blakeley, one of the fiercest anti-capitalist advocates of her generation, is an author, journalist, and commentator. She graduated from the University of Oxford with a first-class honors degree in philosophy, economics, and politics. Her writing has appeared in Tribune and the New Statesman, and she regularly appears in the media - from BBC Question Time to MTV News. She is the author of Stolen, The Corona Crash, and Vulture Capitalism, and edited Futures of Socialism.

Why are Gen Z so valuable to solving current problems? What is wrong with so many social mobility initiatives? How do you collaborate when you're an introvert?   In this week's 5 Big Questions interview we talk to playwright, novelist and broadcaster, BONNIE GREER OBE FRSL   Known for: Vice-President - The Shaw Society Former Deputy Chair - British Museum Former Trustee - Royal Opera House Former Trustee - London Film School Former Chancellor - Kingston University Author - Langston Hughes: The Value of Contradiction Author - Obama Music Librettist - Yes Author - Hanging By Her Teeth   The Big 5 Questions: How do you measure the impact of what you do? How should people/businesses be preparing for the future? How do we build the workforce we need for that future? How do you use creativity to solve problems? How do you collaborate?   Key quotes: “I like people, even though I'm actually quite shy. I don't go out in public. I stopped going to dinner parties because I couldn't stand the small talk. I don't really go anywhere.” “I don't know my phone number, on purpose.” “I'm really excited about Gen Z and all those generations afterwards, who are going to be making new consciousness for us, so that's who I want to talk to and who I want to try to dialogue with.” “The metaverse is a complex conglomeration of different IT systems that create another reality.” “We have to get rid of elitist education, we can't keep doing that. You know, Stormzy talking about sending kids to Oxford, that makes me vomit! What is he doing? Why doesn't he build some schools? I mean, Oxford isn't a great place for a black kid to go to, is he crazy? Well, he's a capitalist, it's a commodity thing.” “If we make education as long as it is, it should really be of use, not only academic, for intellect but also the community. Kids should be sent out to just stack shelves. I don't care what kind of degree you're getting, encounter ordinary people in the aisles at Tesco.” “We've got, in the Conservative Party, a cohort of people in their forties who've had no encounter with human beings. And it's a bad, bad thing.” “We're going to have to get off this planet, just to let people breathe. These are questions your children are going to grapple with.” "The last pay-check I ever had was when they found John Belushi dead at the Marmont hotel.” “We need each other in order to expand our brain, so I'm always up for working with other people.” “We're in an era where people are open about their trauma. We carry institutional trauma, we carry inter-generational trauma, I think we're trying to reclaim, not the trauma but our sense of survival and transcendence.” “We are a survivor species and we've survived because we co-operated with each-other. And the other way we survived is that the women moved out. We moved around quite a bit.”   Useful links: Bonnie Greer OBE FRSL (Wikipedia) Bonnie Greer writer profile in The Guardian Cuban Missile Crisis (Wikipedia) Premiership of Liz Truss (Wikipedia) Metaverse (Wikipedia) Bonnie Greer takes on Nick Griffin (BNP) on BBC Question Time (via YouTube) Jean-François Champollion, lexicographer (Wikipedia) Stormzy Scholarships (BBC News) John Belushi death (Wikipedia) British Museum — Bonnie Greer: The Era Of Reclamation The Little Boy and the Robot: A Tale of Our Time - Bonnie Greer TEDx talk (YouTube)   This episode was recorded in October 2022 Interviewer: Richard Freeman for always possible Editor: CJ Thorpe-Tracey for Lo Fi Arts

Paul Mason is a journalist, writer, film-maker and public speaker.  He is the author of six books, including Postcapitalism. Mason writes a weekly column for the New Statesman, and contributes to the Guardian, Freitag and Le Monde Diplomatique. He is a frequent guest on opinion-forming TV and radio shows, including BBC Newsnight, DemocracyNow! BBC Politics Live and BBC Question Time. Mason was also economics editor at both BBC Newsnight and Channel 4 News.  Paul Mason warns that the Democratic Party and the country's “left” and “progressives” in the United States are not equipped to resist Trump and the Republican's fascist assault on democracy because they are still in denial about the intractable levels of hostility and violence being marshaled against them.    Mason also explains the role of libido, violence, and other emotions in fascism and why such an ideology is so appealing to Trumpists and other fascist-authoritarians. As diagnosed by Paul Mason, the West is ill-equipped to confront Trumpism and the Global Right because of a naïve commitment to normal politics and a belief – contrary to the facts and realities of Realpolitik – that compromise is somehow possible with fascists and other authoritarians. Chauncey DeVega shares new polling data and research about Trump's hidden voters and how there has been a large increase these last few weeks in registration among white “working-class” male voters – his most important base of support. Chauncey also highlights the power of “unreason”, which compels Trump's voters to support him and the danger such a delusional way of thinking represents for democracy and the country's future -- whatever the outcome on Election Day next week. And Chauncey DeVega also reviews Borat 2. Laurence Fox first appeared on "So What You're Saying Is..." a few weeks before his celebrated -- to some, controversial -- appearance on BBC Question Time. He now returns to the #SWYSI sofa to tell us what impact the subsequent storm of controversy has had on his life, his family & career and, indeed, on his own outlook on life & society. Disturbed by both Black Lives Matter & Extinction Rebellion, Laurence discusses the damage woke ideology is causing to British institutions (including RADA, from which he graduated), the nation and its heritage. He dismisses the fragility, narrow mindedness & arrogance of the progressive woke extremists but believes they & their religious fervour shall become increasingly irrelevant to society as the public switch to multi-platformed new media. Laurence & Peter Whittle also discuss our reaction to Covid-19, whether the lockdown, fear & continuing measures are an over-reaction and when or if we shall ever return to a state of normality. --------------- To join or support the New Culture Forum's SOS: SAVE OUR STATUES campaign click here: https://saveourstatues.org.uk --------------- SUBSCRIBE: If you are enjoying the show, please subscribe to our channel on YouTube (click the Subscribe Button underneath the video and then Click on the Bell icon next to it to make sure you Receive All Notifications) AUDIO: If you prefer Audio you can subscribe on itunes or Soundcloud. How you getting on TQBP listeners? I hope you're all well this week. This episode, I had the pleasure of playwright and screenwriter James Graham's company on FaceTime. We recorded hours after he appeared on BBC Question Time (seek out it on BBC iPlayer) where he talked about the battle to save theatre and the arts amid huge funding gaps due closure and shutdown. It's a subject very close to my heart, and he expands on what he said on the show brilliantly here. This is a wide-ranging conversation. We talk about the challenge to creativity and toxic productivity. James shares his theory why we've all turned to quizzes in lockdown (as well as their shortcomings). We talk digital theatre and his play THIS HOUSE, which will be shown on YouTube as part of National Theatre At Home on May 28. And, of course, we talk about ITV's Quiz, which James wrote and is now officially the biggest television drama of the year. Listen for loads of great secrets about the show, as well as the usual lockdown TV recommendations.James also talks passionately about the ways in which you can help theatre in this time. Please search for your local venue and try to pre-book tickets for future shows where you can. Many theatres, including The Globe, National Theatre and more are also accepting donations. There is also a list of resources for helping the arts and artists here: https://theatresupport.info. As one of Britain’s best known and loved poets, Benjamin Zephaniah's work has long been featured on the school curriculum. Lately he’s also become a familiar face on television, not least in Peaky Blinders, set in his home city of Birmingham, as well as appearing as a regular panelist on BBC Question Time. But his journey to national literary figure and Professor of Poetry and Creative Writing at Brunel University has been a remarkable one. There was the relentless racism he faced as in childhood in the 1960s; there was violence within his family, and repeatedly from the police. Zephaniah was involved in crime as a young man. But he knew from an early age that he wanted to be a poet. And he found his voice in a fusion of dub style improvisation and West Indian Music, pioneering live performance poetry on television. Benjamin Zephaniah joins Front Row from his home in rural Lincolnshire for an extended interview with presenter Samira Ahmed which explores his roots as a poet, his throughts on the Coronavirus crisis and its impact on frontline workers, and to premiere a new poem he's written in praise of the NHS entitled Praise the Saviour.
