The ranger's journey from level 5 to 20 is a majestic tale of growth, survival, and discovering that Hunter's Mark may not actually deserve permanent custody of your concentration. Randall's Gloom Stalker becomes an invisible crossbow machine, Ash's Drakewarden takes to the skies aboard a fire-breathing murder lizard, and Tyler spends sixteen levels converting every available feat, spell slot, and medical supply into increasingly desperate attempts to keep one flying snake alive. By level 20, two of these characters are legendary hunters. The third is still shouting, "Don't worry, buddy, I have Cure Wounds!" while filling out another pet insurance claim. Show Notes In this episode, we continue building our 2014 DnD 5e rangers, taking Randall's Gloom Stalker, Ash's Drakewarden, and Tyler's original Player's Handbook Beast Master from level 5 all the way to level 20. Meanwhile, Tyler's Beast Master slowly crawls toward competence, eventually allowing his snake to attack twice and share spells, assuming it survives long enough to enjoy either feature. At the highest levels, the ranger's progression becomes much less exciting. Fifth-level spells offer a few useful options, Feral Senses arrives with awkward limitations, and the class gives players several excellent reasons to multiclass after level 15. The journey concludes with Foe Slayer, a capstone so underwhelming that the group proposes replacing it with a legendary death arrow capable of instantly killing enemies, because a level-20 ranger should receive something more exciting than occasionally adding Wisdom to one attack. Finally, the Question of the Week examines why players reacted differently to the DnD 2024 rules and the Pathfinder 2e Remaster. In this episode, we explore Favored Enemies nobody tracks, terrain nobody visits, spells competing for the same concentration slot, and the revolutionary discovery that the Ranger becomes significantly better when you replace most of the Ranger. Commanding the companion to attack consumes the Ranger's action, leaving the character watching their pet play D&D on their behalf. Modern companion subclasses demonstrate what Beast Master should have been. The Drake can act through a bonus action, contribute extra damage with its reaction, support the front line, and survive encounters without requiring constant emotional and medical supervision. Your build should have a recognizable combat loop by level 4. Randall attacks rapidly from hiding, Ash fires from range while the Drake fights up front, and Tyler commands a snake while quietly reconsidering every decision that brought him here. I am honored to have sat down with a true icon of 1980s genre cinema: Marc Singer. Join me and Marc Singer as we travel back to 1982 to discuss the legendary sword-and-sorcery epic The Beastmaster. Portraying the heroic Dar, a warrior with the extraordinary ability to communicate telepathically with animals, Marc defined the fantasy hero archetype for an entire generation. Being a movie that was brought into existence during the Golden Era, I feel that this set the tone for a lot of fantasy and action movies (and some remakes). The intense energy that was delivered for the role of Dar is immense and genuine given that this movie was filmed during the times of practical special effects. Over forty years later, the film's message of harmony with nature and standing up against tyranny remains as powerful as ever—and Kodo and Podo still hold a very special place in all of our hearts.

Our small band of adventurers is trapped in Barovia, a mist locked valley ruled by Strahd von Zarovich, an ancient vampire lord with the patience of a spider and the manners of a king. We have been trying to protect Ireena Kolyana from him, recover the Amulet of Ravenkind, and stay alive long enough to do something that matters. Recently we failed to retrieve that amulet in Vallaki, lied to Ireena's brother Ismark to keep him from charging into a suicide mission, and then finally had to admit the truth. Ireena was taken by Strahd.So when the invitation arrives, we accept it. Dinner at Ravenloft. Polite. Civilized. Completely insane.On the road, Barovia reminds us that travel is never just travel. Revenants on a skeletal horse ambush the party and an ogre zombie joins the slaughter. Ismark is dropped in the chaos and only survives because Urihorn rides in on his mountain lion and drags him back from the edge. The undead die laughing with a promise that they will meet us again.Then the castle welcomes us. An unmanned coach. A swaying drawbridge over a gorge. Doors opening by themselves. Rahadin, Strahd's chamberlain, arriving with a choir of invisible screams. A banquet hall glittering with chandeliers and a feast laid out like a joke.Strahd plays the gracious host and then reveals the knife. Ireena enters. So does Yeska, a young altar boy we once tried to keep safe. Both are vampires now. And Ireena is wearing the Amulet of Ravenkind, the holy artifact we lost and desperately needed. The room goes cold in the way only a story can go cold when you realize the villain has been moving pieces you did not even know were on the board.From there, we start exploring Ravenloft and the castle starts teaching us its rules. Vampire spawn watch from the walls. A ruined chapel dares us to touch what should not be touched. Secret passages lead to trapped rooms. A captive accountant named Lief sits chained to a desk keeping Strahd's books like bureaucracy is also immortal. A maid begs to be rescued. A centuries old portrait shows Ireena as if she has always been here.And then the traps get personal. A coffer releases a green gas that drops party members without a fair fight. An animated suit of red armor hunts like a machine and kills Ismark. When we wake later, the castle has rearranged the scene. Bodies are missing. The fire relights itself. Evidence disappears. A bell summons spiders. Burning webs threatens to burn the whole structure down. A tub of blood erupts with a screaming figure and then the blood is gone like it never existed.Finally, a dusty dining room offers one last bait. A wedding cake explodes. Since we just did Don Coscarelli's 1979 debut, Phantasm, a movie made on tiny, sub-500k budget, we thought it made a lot of sense to see what happens when you break through and Hollywood heaps cash on you to make a proper movie. The result is... very Coscarelli-ish. There's no question whatsoever that Don is well-read on matters of fantasy and science fiction and these being the days before Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies mandated that all fantasy features be epic, high-fantasy blow-outs, Coscarelli reaches back into the pool of gritty sword and sorcery for something as characteristically weird as you'd expect from authors like Poul Anderson, Fritz Lieber, and Robert E. Howard. Is it good, though? Well...The story concerns the hunky, flaxen-haired Dar, the last of his people, who sets out across a dusty landscape seeking vengeance on Maax, the head of a wicked cult in the city of Aruk who will be killed by the son of King Zed. By some unexplainable power, Dar can speak to animals and forms a party of two ferrets, a tiger, and a hawk to have his revenge.
