Brooklyn-based goth-folk duo Charming Disaster's upcoming album The Double—their seventh full-length release—explores the world that exists behind the one we know, featuring songs inspired by nature, mortality, magic, ritual, and literary genres ranging from science fiction to Victorian horror. The new album was co-produced by band members Ellia Bisker and Jeff Morris with longtime collaborator, recording engineer Don Godwin. All but one of the ten tracks were recorded at Tonal Park in Takoma Park, MD, with one song recorded by circus music composer Peter Bufano in Boston, MA. The Double will be released on CD, as a 12-inch colored vinyl LP, and on all digital platforms on May 16, 2025. The vinyl will be released in a 2-disc package that also includes Charming Disaster's 2024 compilation Time Ghost, a collection of singles released over the last decade.   The Double invites listeners to step across the border of an alternate reality, where spells are cast, time travel is possible, plants are taking over civilization, and vampires lurk in the shadows. Adventures in the darkness lie beyond the threshold.   The album's ten songs include “Black Locust,” a lullaby about mortality; “New Moon,” a magical nature ritual; “Trick of the Light,” a reimagining of Bram Stoker's Dracula; “Time Machine,” in which Charming Disaster change the past and start over again; “Scavengers,” a walk in the woods with vultures and bones; “Beautiful Night,” a defiant response to struggles with depression; “Vitriol,” a tribute to artist Thomas Little, who turns guns into ink; “Haunted Lighthouse,” a swashbuckling sea voyage; “Gang of Two,” a true crime adventure; and “Green Things,” a love letter to what grows between the cracks (and its inevitable takeover).   The album features an array of talented collaborators. Co-producer Don Godwin, who has worked on Charming Disaster's entire discography, contributed bass, drums, and horns as well as engineering and mixing. “Haunted Lighthouse” features Broadway percussionist Mike Dobson along with circus composer Peter Bufano, who played piano and accordion and engineered the track at Cirkestra World Headquarters in Boston, MA (with additional tracking at Tonal Park). “Scavengers” features cello recorded by Kate Wakefield of the duo Lung, who also created the string arrangement for “Beautiful Night.” Stefan Zeniuk of Gato Logo contributed saxophone to “Green Things.”   In conjunction with The Double, Charming Disaster is releasing the second edition of their “oracle deck” (similar to a Tarot deck). The Charming Disaster Oracle Deck contains 72 cards (including 12 new cards for the second edition), each representing one of the songs from Charming Disaster's discography. The cards feature illustrations commissioned from more than thirty different artists. The deck can be used as a divination tool, or as a visual accompaniment to Charming Disaster's music. The duo themselves use these cards in their live performances to determine the set through the element of chance.   Charming Disaster was formed by Bisker and Morris in 2012, inspired by the gothic humor of Edward Gorey and Tim Burton, the murder ballads of the American Folk tradition, and the dramatic flair of the cabaret. Together the duo write songs that tell stories about myth, magic, and mortality, using two voices to explore dark narratives and characters with a playfully macabre sensibility.   On their critically acclaimed albums Love, Crime & Other Trouble (2015), Cautionary Tales (2017), and SPELLS + RITUALS (2019), Charming Disaster explored death, crime, folklore, and the occult. On Our Lady of Radium (2022), they turned their attention to science and explored the life and discoveries of pioneering scientist Marie Curie. On Super Natural History (2023), they united the natural world and the metaphysical realm in a musical cabinet of curiosities.   The duo put out two releases in 2024: Time Ghost, an album-length collection of songs released as singles between 2013 and 2024; and Dance Me to the End of Bela Lugosi's Lovesong, an EP of covers paying tribute to a few of the band's influences: Leonard Cohen's “Dance Me to the End of Love,” “Bela Lugosi's Dead” by Bauhaus, and The Cure's “Lovesong.”   In Charming Disaster's live shows, the duo combine vocal harmonies and clever lyrics with ukulele, guitar, and foot percussion, with a cabaret-influenced performance style that straddles the line between concert and theatre and has been described as “haunted vaudeville” (Splice Magazine). Charming Disaster's music has been featured on the spooky hit podcast Welcome to Night Vale. They have opened for legendary cello-rock ensemble Rasputina, Goth icon Voltaire, and Amanda Palmer's punk cabaret duo The Dresden Dolls. Their concerts have captivated audiences across the United States and in Europe. They have appeared alongside storytellers, comedians, fire eaters, puppets, burlesque artists, poets, and circus performers. Recent appearances have included Joe's Pub in NYC, Atlanta's massive pop culture convention Dragon Con, Brooklyn's historic Green-Wood Cemetery, the Rochester Fringe Festival, Philadelphia's Science History Institute, the Edgar Allan Poe Museum in Richmond, VA, Cleveland's WizbangCircus Theatre, and the Coney Island Sideshow stage, as well as sundry bars, art galleries, theatres, bookstores, libraries, train cars, mausoleums, and museums.   LINKS: Website: www.charmingdisaster.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/charmingdisaster Instagram: http://instagram.com/charmingdisasterband YouTube: http://youtube.com/charmingdisasterband Bandcamp: http://charmingdisaster.bandcamp.com Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/artist/1RjkfhamohczSXjFy5WcZh   The Double preorder link: charmingdisaster.bandcamp.com/album/the-double     Tickets : Charming Disaster at The Foundry Cleveland June 5th with Cowboy Princess Brigade https://www.ticketweb.com/event/charming-disaster-cowboy-princess-brigade-the-foundry-tickets/14325923?utm_medium=affiliate&irgwc=1&clickid=yKYzFM2SwxycTOrRPc1Gt0d7UksRjjwhTXGA2E0&camefrom=CFC_BUYAT_219208&impradid=219208&REFERRAL_ID=tmfeedbuyat219208&wt.mc_id=aff_BUYAT_219208&utm_source=219208-Bandsintown&impradname=Bandsintown&ircid=4272   C-Level Pete Francis Tickets : https://www.ticketweb.com/event/peter-francis-of-dispatch-the-winchester-tickets/14338833?utm_source=AllEvents.in&utm_medium=event-discovery-platform&utm_campaign=lakewood-events

Walk Boldly With Jesus
Witness Wednesday #87 Eucharistic Procession

Walk Boldly With Jesus

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 22, 2023 11:43

Today's witness Wednesday will be a bit different than usual. Today I am going to read you two blog posts written by Father David Barnes.  He was the Spiritual Director at St. John's Seminary in Boston in 2014 when these posts were written. He was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Boston in 1997. The two blog posts were written about a Eucharist procession that took place in 2014 from MIT to Harvard. It was in response to a “black mass” which was to be held that same night and the administration at the college refused to intervene. There are a few reasons I wanted to talk with you about this today. First, there is a Eucharist Procession this weekend right here in Lowell, MA, for anyone who is listening to this and who lives locally. It is on November 26th at 11 am at St. Rita's Parish. The other one is because I have heard this story at least twice over the last month, and I feel it is one that should be repeated. We tend to get scared watching the news. We feel as though evil is taking over, and we can sometimes feel helpless. This story shows us we are not helpless. It shows us good defeats evil. The Lord has already won the war of good vs. evil. He will always be victorious! The First Blog article is titled A Beautiful Night to be Catholic in the Archdiocese of Boston and was written by Father David Barnes on Tuesday, May 13, 2014.  CLICK HERE to go to Father David Barnes' BlogIt's a little after Midnight, and I am just getting in after participating in a magnificent evening.  Hundreds of Catholics joined in a Eucharistic Procession down Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge from the MIT chapel to St. Paul's in Harvard Square.  There, we spent a period of time in prayer.  The purpose of the evening was to pray in reparation for a planned Satanic Mass on the campus of Harvard University.  The procession, which passed MIT and Central Square, was a site to behold.  People were coming out of restaurants--some kneeling on the sidewalks, others blessing themselves, and some just staring in bewilderment.  Many of the servers who organized the procession were from Juventutem Boston.  That is the Traditional Latin Mass Community of young people.  They did an impressive job.  It's not easy to keep us priests organized.  The procession ended at St. Paul's in Harvard Square. When we arrived, the church--which I suppose holds about 1000 people--was already filled to capacity. So hundreds of those who walked in procession were left standing on the street outside of St. Paul's. As I looked out at the congregation, I saw many people from my previous assignment in Beverly.  They traveled a good distance to be there.  It makes me proud to have been in a parish of people who love the Eucharist so much that they would come to this event.  In the procession, I saw many students from Boston University (where I serve as Chaplain).  It was so inspiring to see their witness.  The unsung hero of the event, in my opinion, was Fr. Richard Clancy, who is the Chaplain at MIT and who is the Director for Catholic Campus Ministry in the Archdiocese of Boston. He was the one who came up with the idea of a Eucharistic Procession.  Although he doesn't look for accolades, he deserves some today. Tonight, I spent several hours with Catholics from all over the Archdiocese of Boston--young and old, students, married people, priests, seminarians, religious men and women, lay people--who all love the Eucharist.  That's what being a Catholic is.  I'm grateful to have experienced their powerful witness tonight. The second blog article is titled The Harvard Eucharistic Procession Was Beautiful . . . But Now What? This was written on Tuesday, May 13, 2014.  CLICK HERE to go to Father David Barnes' BlogThe decision of a student group at Harvard University to host a "black mass" on its campus precipitated a massive response from Catholics around Boston, the United States, and even the world.  I've heard of parishes all over the United States that held Holy Hours at the time of the scheduled event at Harvard.  As I mentioned previously, I participated in a magnificent Eucharistic Procession from the campus of MIT to St. Paul's in Harvard Square.  Hundreds of Catholics followed the Eucharistic Lord down the main street in Cambridge, where thousands of onlookers witnessed the flock following the Eucharistic Good Shepherd.I'm not always a huge fan of "big events" because I feel like those things can be used as a substitute for true faith.  Sometimes, they feel as though the effort that goes into planning and executing them far outweighs the benefits.  They sometimes feel designed as a publicity stunt or as a way of evoking a strong emotional reaction, but the effects seem short-lived.  Last night's Eucharistic Procession had a different feel.  As I looked about and saw the many young college students from area universities participating, I was touched by their love for the Eucharist and their sincere desire to follow Christ. During the past year, one thing that has really struck me about the college students whom I encounter every day is their Eucharistic Faith.  Quite often, as I am standing outside of church on a Sunday before Mass, I am asked, "Father, do you have time for a quick confession?"  Similarly, for thirty minutes each day before Daily Mass, I hear confessions.  It is rare for there to be a day that nobody comes.  I also noticed this at Mass itself.  At every Sunday Mass, there are young people who come up in the communion line and ask for a blessing rather than receive the Eucharist.  Presumably, having examined their conscience, they do not want to receive the Eucharist until they have received the Sacrament of Penance.I find all of this very striking.  These young people are not scrupulous or legalistic.  They are not tied up in knots.  Instead, they strike me as being young people who simply love the Lord and who want to approach Him and receive Him with devotion and love.  Their love for the Eucharist and the ease with which they approach the Sacrament of Penance is a beautiful witness to Christ and His Grace.  I benefit from their example. All of this comes to mind for me today as I think about the "big event" of the Eucharistic Procession and the blasphemous "satanic mass" that precipitated it.  I am reminded of my own need to deepen continually my devotion to the Eucharist.  These events beckon all of us to examine ourselves and to renew our love for the Blessed Sacrament.  Do I love the Eucharist?  Do I live a life that is coherent with the Eucharist that I receive?  Do I humbly examine myself before approaching to receive the Eucharist?  Do I spend time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament and make visits to be with the Lord in the Eucharist?  Do I receive the Eucharist with reverence, or am I distracted, careless, or even willful?  In this instance, the "big event" ought to cause all of us who are Catholic to become more coherent in our lives.  While we were rightly outraged at the intended sacrilege of the Eucharist by others, we ought to make certain that we do not simply become "protesters" in our relationship to the Eucharist. Instead, we ought to become more Eucharistic in our daily life.  This "big event" ought to deepen our desire to grow in Eucharistic intimacy.  We want to make sure that we ourselves are not sacrilegious, blasphemous, or careless.  I think the "big event" of the Eucharistic Procession will bear the most fruit if it is followed by Catholics everywhere examining our own consciences and humbly confessing our sins and receiving absolution.  For me, the Eucharist Procession was an amazing witness of people showing their love for the Eucharist.  In my life, however, the far more powerful and convincing witness of Eucharistic Faith is seeing the daily procession of college students making their way to the confessional. Both of these articles demonstrate how powerful the Eucharist is and also the power of taking Jesus, in Eucharistic Form, to the streets. People recognize and can feel His presence even if they don't know what they are feeling. If you have not participated in a Eucharistic Procession, I recommend you try to find one. They are so powerful, and it is so beautiful to see Jesus processing down the streets. It is one thing to love Jesus in the comfort and security of our churches. It is quite another to love Him out on the streets. I have placed a link to a video of the procession in the show notes. CLICK HERE FOR VIDEO If you have a few minutes, I know you will be blessed by watching it. I hope you enjoyed hearing about this amazing event and the effect it had on so many!

The Yankees finally won a laugher, scoring double-digit runs for just the fourth time in 106 games and winning their fourth game by more than two runs since the end of June with a 13-1 win over the Orioles. The offense exploded, Luis Gil looked like the Yankees' ace in place of him and Stephen Ridings came out throwing the way Dellin Betances used to. In addition to the Yankees' all-around performance, the Rays, Red Sox and A's all lost. After the recap, Eric Arditti of Barstool Sports joined me to talk about the state of the Orioles in another lost season for the team.

8 Tips to Naturally Fall Asleep Fast and Stay Asleep!

I HAVE TODAY with Diane Forster

Intention:  I HAVE TODAY...to Sleep Peacefully Through The Night!   While doing some research on insomnia and why many of my clients can’t seem to fall asleep or stay asleep all night, I read an article that stated about 1 in 4 Americans suffer from INSOMNIA.  I used to be one of them!  For many, many years, I would fall asleep early...between 9 to 11 pm, sleep for a few hours, wake up between 1am to 2am, be wide awake for 3-4 hours, fall asleep around 5am, then wake up to the alarm clock feeling completely exhausted and unmotivated to get out of bed.     Our sleeptime is so essential to our physical and emotional health and well being.  The healing and regeneration of cells happens while we sleep.   It was so frustrating!  After many years of doing that, I got intentional and I made some changes to my sleeping habits.  Once I did, I began getting 7 solid hours of uninterrupted sleep ever since!   Here are 8 Secrets (plus a bonus secret) to help you to not only fall asleep fast, but stay asleep all night!     Your bed is for sex and sleep!     There are only two things you should be doing in your bed, and that’s having sex or sleeping.  Nothing else should be done in there! Do not watch TV, eat, work on your laptop, talk on the phone, or anything else that’s not related to sleeping.  If you honor and treat your bed for what it’s designed to do for you, whenever you climb into it, one of those two things will happen for you! (Reading in bed because it relaxes you, and listening to meditations is allowed, too.  Those are things that get you to your end goal of sleep.)     Make sure your bed is clear of any clutter!     The only thing that should be on your bed are your sheets, blankets and pillows, and of course, you (and your partner.)  Don’t get into bed with clothes on the end of it, books, your laptop, folded laundry, etc. Not even your bathrobe should be on the edge of your bed!  A cluttered bed creates cluttered energy, which will create clutter in your mind. Your bed should be clean and pristine!     Use Lavender Essential Oil or Spray.     Lavender is calming and relaxing and helps you to sleep.  You can put Lavender Essential Oil or Lavender Bubbles in the bath.  Use the oil to dab some on your temples, behind your ears, under your nose, on your third eye chakra.  You can also purchase Lavender Spray and spray your pillowcase with it. Keep some on your bedside table.     PICK A BEDTIME AND STICK TO IT!     Of all the tips, this may be the most important tip of all!  Be committed to getting to bed at the same time every night! Make it a non-negotiable habit.  Just like you set your alarm clock for the same time every morning, you need to set a time to be in bed, lights out.  You want to command your body to adhere to this routine. The memory muscle will strengthen, and when that time approaches, you’ll look forward to going to bed because you know you’re about to get a great night’s sleep.  If you fall asleep on the couch, watching TV, or stay out too late, and you don’t give your body the bedtime command, it gets confused and out of alignment.     No TV or Devices 30 Minutes Before Bed.     Your mind needs time to calm down and prepare for the “alpha” state, which is the brain wave state you enter as you begin to fall asleep.  Give it time to “un”process the stimulation from the TV show you were watching, or the internet and social media surfing you were doing. If you go to bed, or fall asleep while being engaged with your devices, there’s a good chance you will have a restless night sleep and wake up feeling that same frenetic energy that you went to bed with.  This “down” time can be used for sitting in meditation, writing in your journal, taking a bath or shower, enjoying a cup of herbal tea while listening to light music.       Create a List of Gratitude About Your Day.     Either just before getting into bed, or immediately after you get into bed, think about your day and all the things you are grateful for that happened during the day.  You can either write them in a journal, think about them in your mind, say them aloud, and be sure to add “Thank You.” You can NEVER express too much gratitude.  The more grateful you are, the more you receive to be grateful for!     Set the Intention for a Beautiful Night’s Sleep!     Your body will do whatever you tell it to do!  So, tell your body what you want!!! Say aloud, “I set the intention to have a beautiful night’s sleep, have vivid dreams with answers to my questions and have my prayers answered, to get a solid 6, 7, or 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep, and wake up feeling refreshed, well rested and full of energy!   Try this, and watch how effectively it works! If you give your body the specific instructions, it can’t help but follow your commands.   Be Cognizant of Daily Habits That Cause Insomnia.     It’s a good rule to make sure you don’t have any caffeine after 12 Noon.  If you typically get tired and sluggish mid-afternoon, try taking a 10 minute power nap, a quick and brisk walk, or do some deep breathing (I do my “Rainbow Breath Meditation” from my book, “I HAVE TODAY...Find Your Passion, Purpose & Smile...Finally!”.  It oxygenates the body quickly, and in 4 short breaths, you feel amazing!)  You may also want to avoid wine and any other alcoholic beverages because the sugar content will wake you up and keep you up in the middle of the night.     BONUS TIP:  Stop drinking water by 6pm at night to avoid bathroom trips.       Do your best to get your liquids (especially water) in you during the day and to stop drinking large quantities after 6pm.  That helped me so much! What I do is set an alarm on my phone every two hours beginning at 10am and end at 6pm, with a “WATER” reminder.  That way, I get my daily required water early in the day. Another tip can do is sleep with a glass of water next to the bed, only sip on it if necessary, but wait until the morning to drink it.  When you first awake, drink the whole glass, which also boosts your metabolism.   These tips can help you get the solid sleep you need and will have you looking and feeling better!     If you like these tips, you may also like my “30 Day Challenge On How To Have a Better TODAY.”  Click here to learn more.

After Stugs return to the group, they were quite alarmed. As Stugs appearances have changed into more feline characteristics. After some time convincing the group, they are able to quit questioning the changes and banter on about if they should take the mansion or not. Gailic decides to make food as the group makes a decision. Eventually they decide to leave the mansion behind in Zeebo's, uh, capable hands? But he is happy in doing so reassuring the group that he will take care of the villagers and waves them off. Daryl decides it is time to take form of a Dragon. Everyone decides they will climb on Daryls back. Stug calls out Ursa to ride as well. As they can tell there is not enough room for everyone. So after playing musical chairs the group decides who will ride who and Volkorn will be whisked away in Stugs strong champion arms. They fly until night starts to fall as they overpass a small quarry of Boulders and rubble. Dranas heads out to get items for a fire to cook outdoors. Daryl scoffs at the idea of living like a peasant and creates his mansion door in aboulder. The rest follow but Dranas is stubborn and stays outside. Making sweet bread to eat and a good peaceful night to himself in his tent. The group inside the mansion was having a great time. Food and drinks. Gailic dances with the mansions servants. Volkorn is perched on the couch watching the show and having a good time with the vibes. Stug decides to sleep, and eventually Daryl as well. As the party goes on in the living room something outside has a scent of something sweet in the air. Back outside to Dranas as he sleeps, there is a spike that drops through his tent! Almost piercing his head! He rolls to his side. Then another spike comes down, narrowly missing his torso. Dranas leaves his belonging to run inside, naked. Gailic dancing with flour coated unseen servants and Volkorn just watching, Dranas bursts through the door! Yelling about how there is giant scorpions! They are battling 2 giant earth elemental's too! Trying to catch his breath. He is invited to dance but refuses. Stating that his stuff is out there and maybe they might want to fight them? Volkorn does not care for this. Neither does Gailic. Stug and Daryl wake up from the commotion, and head to the window to see out the door. Sure enough there was giant beasts battling it out! After long talks about fighting or not the group takes a step outside, only for there to no longer be any fight going on and the two gargantuan sized scorpions are lifeless on the ground. Gailic starts to break away the tail plating to reach its poison sack to harvest. He is able to do this cleanly. Volkorn decides he will try the other but cracks at the shell. He eventually asks Gailic for help. To which he complies and gives him some nice tips on harvesting poison a bit safer. Dranas is stabbing at the shell of the scorpion and it is quite durable. He asks Gailic if he can have the Scarab that he broke off earlier. He complies. After harvesting the group Decides the trek onward to their chosen destination. What awaits then? Only time can tell. Jen and Linz talk about: Jay Park (surprise!); PSY's song “Daddy”; Zico's new EP, “Gallery"; the new Zico Rule that we have created; a song by Wa$$up; as much as we've talked about Epik High, we haven't talked much about Tablo's solo stuff; the story of how Linz came to like KARA's song “Step”; IU's “Sogyeokdong”; Jen busts out one of her first K-Pop purchases ever; “Beautiful Night” by BEAST; BOA's attempt at an American release; a song by EXO that never gets talked about; Linz enjoyed the G.I. song “Beatles” without the video; the same could be said about LC9's “MaMa Beat”, even if it is a really cool song; M.I.B.'s breakout song, “Men In Black”; Linz doesn't know why she didn't check out Nu'est sooner; TVXQ's “Humanoids”; and Remi sent us a question about Jessi's performance on King of Masked Singer. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/kpopandbeer/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/kpopandbeer/support
