My guest on this episode is Peter Darbyshire. Peter is an author, journalist, and communications professional whose debut novel, Please, won the KM Hunter Award for Best Emerging Artist and the ReLit Award for Best Novel. He is also the author of the novel The Warhol Gang and the story collection Has the World Ended Yet? He works as Communications Officer for BC's Provincial Health Services Authority. I'm doing something slightly different in this episode, because Peter actually has three books that are about to be published: The Mona Lisa Sacrifice, The Dead Hamlets and The Apocalypse Ark, which are all part of his Cross series of supernatural thrillers. All three books are being published in October by Wolsak & Wynn. However, all three were previously published by another indie press in 2013, 2015, and 2016, respectively. The Vancouver Sun said, in its review of the Cross series, that Darbyshire “writes with the unfettered delight of a gluttonous reader trapped in a library in his own mind, drawing promiscuously from myth, folk tale, religious texts and apocrypha, literature, music and philosophy.” Peter and I talk about how running the COVID-19 social media response for a provincial health authority gave him a new perspective on the apocalypse, about the process of getting the Cross series reprinted—and why it needed to be—and about how the stretch of time since his last new work of fiction speaks to something of a crisis of faith when it comes to his own writing‑but also a sense of liberation. The sisters visit with Austin Thompson of the Way Down Wanderers. Often referred to by fans as one of the hardest-working, hardest-touring bands on the circuit today, the 5-piece Illinois-based act not only proves that classification with their jam-packed tour schedule but also on stage every night, with youthful exuberance and a lively stage show, asreliable as it is infectious. High energy percussion, mandolin, guitar, bass, banjo, and fiddle weave seamlessly together to create an experience for fans that has sold out shows across the UK and the United States, filling the front rows with fans not just singing along to one tune, but singing along to all of them. “Everybody says it. We'd be nothing without our supporters. Yeah, they buy tickets and of course we love that, but when we've been on the road for 10hours and walk onto a stage road weary and we see familiar faces singing along, it's hard to describe. It's everything, really. There's a whole lot of love there.” Music enthusiasts are not the only ones taking note. Critics and tastemakers alikehave awarded the young artists an impressive number of accolades ranging fromofficial showcases at AmericanaFest (2018) and International Bluegrass MusicAssociation (2016) to Whitstable UK Session of the Year (2017), a BBC ScotlandSession (2017) as well as Finalist, International Song Writing Competition(2015 & 2016), Chicago's Best Emerging Artist, Deli Magazine (2014) andSongpickr's Best Songs Spotify Playlist (2016) among others. The young men areno strangers to the festival circuit either, having played major National andRegional Festivals such as Merlefest, Summer Camp, Red Wing Roots MusicFestival and Saskatchewan Jazz Fest all across the United States, Canada andthe UK. The band has also graced the stage of coveted venues such as BluegrassUnderground (TN), The Fox Theater (CO), Park West (IL), The Vogue (IN) TheStation Inn (TN) The Gramercy Theater (NYC), and countless others. She grew up in Madden as Danielle Carragher, but since reaching back in time and taking her maternal great grandmother's long lost surname as her stage name, Dani Larkin was born. And it's not just the name that Dani has adopted from the past. The Armagh singer/songwriter and musician's songs also transcend time, steeped in Irelands ancient landscape, mythologies and folklore. Dani began writing at the age of 11 with a poem and since then years of working hard and performing , eventually saw her become the quintessential overnight success. Her debut album, ‘Notes For A Maiden Warrior' was released in to 2021 to rave reviews. ‘striking debut,' ‘stunning,' ‘otherworldly,' ‘powerful,' ‘you can feel the music in your bones,' are just a few accolades from the critics. A whirlwind year of touring home and abroad followed, amidst nominations for ‘Best Album' at this year's Northern Ireland Music Prize and ‘Best Emerging Artist' at the RTE Folk Awards. She opened for Snow Patrol at sold-out London Palladium Theatre and Belfast's Waterfront, and after performing at SXSW festival in Austin Texas, it was off to Vancouver before coming home to tour with Declan O'Rourke. Armagh I caught up with Dani, after she took a short breather in Galway, and she spoke about her life, her music and her philosophies on both. While she's inspired by where she comes from and the legacies of the land, Dani, who has a degree in history and sociology and a masters in international conflict and cooperation, has also used her music to unite, working in places as far afield as Palestine, Indonesia and Columbia. It's back on the road again closer to home in the coming months however, with Dani's next tour kicking off on April 29 at the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival in Belfast, followed by a UK tour with Ye Vagabonds and some shows of her own. About This Episode Shakey Graves's 2018 show at Big Top was so good, we're bringing you the whole thing! This week's Tent Show Radio is the second half of his performance. Shakey Graves has been categorized as an Americana singer/songwriter, thanks to his traditionally rooted songs, fluent acoustic-guitar picking, and Texas roots. He was named Best Emerging Artist at the 2015 Americana Music Awards. But that tag will undoubtedly be dismissed as restrictive and irrelevant when his radical new album “Can’t Wake Up” is released and performed for live show audiences. About Michael Perry Michael Perry is a New York Times bestselling author, humorist and radio show host from New Auburn, Wisconsin. Perry's bestselling memoirs include Population 485, Truck: A Love Story, Coop, and Visiting Tom, and his latest, Montaigne in Barn Boots: An Amateur Ambles Through Philosophy. His first book for young readers, The Scavengers, was published in 2014 and first novel for adult readers, The Jesus Cow, was published in May of 2015. Raised on a small Midwestern dairy farm, Perry put himself through nursing school while working on a ranch in Wyoming, then wandered into writing. He lives with his wife and two daughters in rural Wisconsin, where he serves on the local volunteer fire and rescue service and is an intermittent pig farmer. He hosts the nationally-syndicated "Tent Show Radio," performs widely as a humorist, and tours with his band the Long Beds (currently recording their third album for Amble Down Records). He has recorded three live humor albums including Never Stand Behind A Sneezing Cow and The Clodhopper Monologues. Learn more about Michael and where to get his publications at www.sneezingcow.com. The problem of ticketing and celebrating with songwriter/artist Mindy Smith (@mindysmithmusic) and Stephen Glicken, CEO of Project Admission. Armed with IMDB credits, running a record label, and working from the ground floor of CrowdSurge and Songkick. Stephen's latest venture is building an improved experience for the buying, selling, and distribution of digital tickets to increase data and revenue. Then Mindy Smith and I sat down not long after the re-release of her record One Moment More on vinyl and the release of Kenny Chesney's, "Better Boat". Mindy Smith, artist and songwriter, is celebrating 15 years of her first record, One Moment More. You've heard Mindy's songs recorded or heard her voice with Kenny Chesney, Dolly Parton, Amy Grant, Vince Gill, Olivia Newton John, John Prine and more. Originally from New York, Mindy made her way to Tennessee after her foster mother passed from breast cancer where she had her first taste of bluegrass music. Soon she started writing her original music and made her way to Nashville, TN where she was quickly discovered. A cover song by a legendary artist perked the ears of a producer which eventually led to her debut record, One Moment More. "Come to Jesus" was her biggest commercial hit, receiving airplay on country, adult album alternative and adult contemporary radio. The song charted at No. 32 on the Adult Top 40 chart of Billboard Magazine. In 2004, Smith appeared at the Cambridge Folk Festival in the U.K., which was broadcast nationally on BBC Radio. That same year, Smith was nominated for and won The Americana Music Association’s prestigious, Best Emerging Artist of the Year award. One Moment More is now available and can be bought from and she's hitting the road. Stephen Glicken's career starts in 2000 as an audio engineer in Miami, working with artists such as P. Diddy, Toni Braxton, Nas, Whitney Houston, No Doubt, and more. After Circle House, he connected with the Wu Tang Clan, becoming Ghostface Killah’s exclusive engineer on ‘The Pretty Toney Album’ and ‘Fishscale’. In 2004, Glicken moved to Puerto Rico to produce a couple of records and ended up living there for almost 3 years and being a part of the crew that brought Reggaeton music to the mainstream. These days, Stephen and Project Admission creates a more connected experience for the management, distribution, and exchange of event tickets. With a focus on user experience, the company’s custom technology tracks the chain of ownership for every ticket through its lifecycle, from purchase to event. Project Admission also knows that behind every ticket, there is a fan – someone who deserves to be protected from fraud and guaranteed the legitimacy of a ticket. By tracking the ticket, not only does Project Admission help fans, but it also helps venues and artists by providing valuable data for security and marketing purposes. Welcome to the first show of 2019! Happy New Year to all our listeners. We have some fantastic music and review for you this week. Tremendous Taste Dave from Preston, UK sends us his Listener Recommendation - The Decemberists with Carolina Low. Listen on to hear what we think of this. We also have another Listener Suggestion from Jamie - the quite unique one man band Shakey Graves with the track Roll the Bones. Unknown Mortal Orchestra from New Zealand give us quite a diverse bookend for the show. In addition, we have a Record Box Classic from Art of Noise and more from the truly wonderful Jenny Lewis (of Rilo Kiley fame). Let's bring in 2019 together. Shakey Graves (Alejandro Rose-Garcia) is a very interesting character and musician hailing from Austin, Texas. We discussed in the show how Shakey Graves came about his performing name. In 2007 at the Old Settlers Music Festival in Texas, he and friends gave each other Indian guide names whilst sat around a campfire. As a result of a memorable evening performing music he decided to keep his. Unfortunately, we don't know what any of the other names were. He became increasingly known for his one man band set up, and played mainly solo on his self-released debut album (Roll the Bones). He was becoming increasingly frustrated at having to borrow high hats and kick drums to perform. Consequently, a close friend devised the solution of a modified suitcase that acts as a kick drum and tambourine stand. Shakey Graves Day He won Best Emerging Artist award at the 2105 Americana Music Awards. However, previous to this Mayor of Austin, Lee Leffingwell proclaimed Shakey Graves Day. Every year on September 9th through 11th Shakey offers his recordings, including unreleased albums, for pay-what-you-want prices on Bandcamp. Remembering Manchester's most famous busking son After listening to Shakey Graves we had a flashback of listening to Little Big Band in Manchester in the 1980's. Because of this, we decided to look up Little Big Band (Rob Gray) and were delighted to find he is still knocking out his amazing music. Firstly, Rob performs in more towns than just Manchester now. Secondly, his music is still as fresh and driven sounding as I remember it. I used to travel into Manchester as a 13 year old boy just to stare up at Rob on the steps of the Royal Exchange theatre in Manchester. Consequently, I learnt to play harmonica. Thanks for being such an inspiration Rob. Here are a couple of my favourite performances from you. Happy New Year to our listeners around the globe Yes! A Happy New Year to you all. Thank you for staying with us throughout the year. We really appreciate you being there. Remember - keep those listener suggestions coming in. So where are your listeners based? It's a question we get asked a lot. At the time of January 2019, here's a list of countries that are listeners to From the Bottom of the Record Box. While others may be afraid of what lurks in the dark, multimedia artist Jen Clay chooses to dive into it. Informed by horror and science fiction stories, H.P. Lovecraft, hallucinations and supernatural sightings, Jen navigates themes of the unknown, otherness, the uncanny and the inhuman. She contrasts these themes with a sense of childhood friendliness and constructs encounters with the “dark” through claymation, interactive performance, costume, video and installation. Jen was included in the Girls’ Club Collection’s Off Site Performance Series, has shown at the SuperFine Art Fair during Art Basel Miami Beach and was voted “Best Emerging Artist” in 2016 by the New Times of Broward and Palm Beach. In this episode, we talked about Jen’s performance Nearing, questioning how clearly one’s ideas are communicated in art, seeking validation as an artist, the things that can limit one’s work, the challenges of saying no, how to embrace the things that scare us and much more.

In any given setting, a striking performance can expected from singer-songwriter Jordan Harris who’s on his way to achieving a reputation as a first class musician. Showing strong self-motivation to effectively build his name, Harris breezed into Portland, OR as a breath of fresh air freed from his small town youth. His dedication to the pop-rock sound began at age ten with the drums when the guitar and his voice soon followed and have continued to push him forward. Since first writing and recording his own songs in his late teens, he’s embarked on a journey that’s certain to present a wide range of opportunities. As a charismatic performer he’s gathered a noble following both on his own and as lead singer for The Gentleman’s Club, one of Portland’s premier cover bands. Harris has received nominations as “Best Male Artist” of the Portland Music Awards, “Best Emerging Artist” of Deli Music Magazine and was selected for televised performances on ABC’s “AM Northwest” and “America’s Got Talent” filmed before a sold-out Paramount Theater in Seattle. Currently in pre-production with award winning producer Josh Schroder is Harris’ debut EP, Young, chalked for a September 2011 release with a sixteen city west coast tour. Hailing from Shetland, Jenna grew up immersed in the islands rich fiddle tradition. At the age of nine, she began to learn the fiddle, and was taught by the late Dr Tom Anderson. When fiddle tuition became available in schools, Jenna studied with the late Willie Hunter and was under his direction until the age of 13; during that time she was a prominent prize-winner in the 'Shetlands Young Fiddler of the Year Competition' and by the age of 14 had won both the intermediate and open sections of this annual competition. Through this success she was subsequently invited to compete in the Glennfiddich Fiddle Competition. Whilst still at school Jenna also took lessons from Trevor Hunter and Margaret Scollay. In addition to playing the fiddle, Jenna also studied classical piano. On leaving school, Jenna went on to study a BA in Traditional Scottish Music at the Royal Academy of Music & Drama in Glasgow. Whilst studying fiddle, she also played piano and piano accordion, as well as being introduced to singing. Julie Fowlis is from North Uist, a small island in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, now based in the mainland Highlands of Scotland. She was recently awarded the BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award 2006 for Best Emerging Artist and was also voted Gaelic Singer of the Year 2005 at the Scots Trad Music Awards.
