In this episode of the Journey of My Mother's Son podcast, I talk with, Jon Sexton. This is the first interview that I've recorded with a guest that wasn't Sandy or Alex since late May of this year. I have to tell you – Alaska and Canada were incredible, but it sure is good to be back sharing the stories of the many little people in many little places that are doing all of those many little things that make the whole world change! It started on the tennis and basketball courts and other athletic venues of Visalia, California and has now landed him as the host of the TV show, Selling Nashville. Arica was born and raised in Huerfano County and has a deep sense of respect for the land and the way of life in Southern Colorado. Arica graduated from John Mall High School in Walsenburg and then moved to Boulder, where she obtained a BA in Business Management with an emphasis in Real Estate from the University of Colorado. Throughout college, she worked as a mortgage broker assistant, and upon graduation in 2007, she became a licensed broker associate at Coldwell Banker, one of the leading real estate brokerages in Boulder, CO.Although Arica was fortunate enough to have a great deal of success as a realtor in Denver and Boulder, she felt something was missing. She decided to take a leap of faith and move back to Southern Colorado, as this is where her heart resided. Upon her return, she worked as a manager for a large corporation that offered durable medical equipment throughout Southern Colorado. Arica learned a great deal about managing other employees, financial accounting, human resources, marketing, and the overall skills necessary to operate a successful business. Arica immediately found great success, as she was the top producer in the company and among the top 10 producers in Huerfano County in 2015, closing over $4.7 million in sales with 34 successful transactions. With this success, she decided to spread her wings and open her own brokerage firm and has steadily continued her success, which was shown in 2016 when she was named “The Broker of the Year” and in 2017 when she was given the title of “The Top Producer” in Huerfano County with over $11,000,000 in personal sales and $21,000,000 as a company.In 2018, Arica was named one of the “10 Best Real Estate Agents in Colorado” by the American Institute of Real Estate Agents. In 2019, Arica served as the Spanish Peaks MLS President. From 2019-2021, Arica served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Pueblo Association of Realtors. In 2020, Arica received the prestigious designation of ALC (Accredited Land Consultant) which places her amongst the elite 44 brokers in the State of Colorado to hold this designation out of the 44,0000 licensed brokers in the state.In 2021 Arica served as a member of the Colorado Association of Realtors Grievance Committee amongst a variety of other county boards, committees, and volunteer efforts. In early 2022, Arica received recognition from USA TODAY as one of the “Top 10 Real Estate experts to follow in 2022”. Arica was born and raised in Huerfano County and has a deep sense of respect for the land and the way of life in Southern Colorado. Arica graduated from John Mall High School in Walsenburg and then moved to Boulder, where she obtained a BA in Business Management with an emphasis in Real Estate from the University of Colorado. Throughout college, she worked as a mortgage broker assistant, and upon graduation in 2007, she became a licensed broker associate at Coldwell Banker, one of the leading real estate brokerages in Boulder, CO.Although Arica was fortunate enough to have a great deal of success as a realtor in Denver and Boulder, she felt something was missing. She decided to take a leap of faith and move back to Southern Colorado, as this is where her heart resided. Upon her return, she worked as a manager for a large corporation that offered durable medical equipment throughout Southern Colorado. Arica learned a great deal about managing other employees, financial accounting, human resources, marketing, and the overall skills necessary to operate a successful business. She was then promoted to a Sales Representative position, where she traveled all over Southern Colorado, meeting with physicians and promoting the business and equipment offered. Through these travels, Arica often thought about real estate and how passionate she was about helping others find their little piece of heaven, just as she had found her serenity in the quaint town of La Veta, Colorado.Arica then decided to join the fine group at Capture Colorado, where she learned about Real Estate in Southern Colorado and how it differs from Northern Colorado. Arica immediately found great success, as she was the top producer in the company and among the top 10 producers in Huerfano County in 2015, closing over $4.7 million in sales with 34 successful transactions. With this success, she decided to spread her wings and open her own brokerage firm and has steadily continued her success, which was shown in 2016 when she was named “The Broker of the Year” and in 2017 when she was given the title of “The Top Producer” in Huerfano County with over $11,000,000 in personal sales and $21,000,000 as a company.In 2018, Arica was named one of the “10 Best Real Estate Agents in Colorado” by the American Institute of Real Estate Agents. In 2019, Arica served as the Spanish Peaks MLS President. From 2019-2021, Arica served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Pueblo Association of Realtors. Marty Dulworth is a dedicated individual who has served his country and community with distinction. With a background as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, specializing as an 0331 Heavy Machine Gunner, he demonstrated leadership, bravery, and a commitment to excellence. Transitioning to civilian life, he continued to serve, this time as a vital member of the Anderson Police Department. Over a 20-year career, he spent 8 years on the SWAT team and 13 years as a K9 handler, primarily on the night shift, showcasing his unwavering dedication to public safety. In year 12 of his police career, He received catastrophic gun shot wounds to both legs where after several attempts to save his left leg he ended up losing it and became an amputee. During that shooting his K9 partner gave the ultimate sacrifice and lost his life. He returned to full duty after 3 months and 6 days after the amputation where he went on to work another k9 until he retired. After retiring from the police department, he seamlessly transitioned into a new role as a real estate agent with RE/MAX Real Estate Solutions. Recruiting is a sales process, but it's not the same as a listing presentation. In many cases, a top real estate agent isn't even thinking about leaving their brokerage. We have to point out a pain they don't even know they have, and then show that we're the solution. This current market will create a ton of movement. In a space where less buyers are buying and less sellers are selling, many agents are a flight risk, and we're going to see a lot of them flee the industry. Even experienced agents are going to be willing to make the move to a team because they need help navigating the challenges of this market. 2. Commit to teaching in your marketplace. Most people think that sharing all we're doing is giving information to our competitors, but the “shock and awe approach” actually shows people they can do better by joining us. It also lowers people's resistance to us, and gets them open to working with us in some capacity. 3. If we want to attract top agents, we have to speak the language of real estate. We can't just say our team is great, we actually have to show them with the numbers. Remember agents have lots of options of places they can go, and we have to show them with empirical data that we're the ones that can get them to their desired destination the fastest.
