The Catechism in a Year (with Fr. Mike Schmitz)

Together, with Fr. Mike, we continue our examination of the second commandment. Fr. Mike emphasizes that an oath engages the Lord's name, and the Lord is the Lord of truth. We, therefore, have a duty as Christians to respect God's name in matters of truth. He also emphasizes that everything we say is either in conformity to truth or in opposition to truth. Today's readings are paragraphs 2150-2155. This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/ciy Please note: The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.

Do you ever feel like Bible reading has become routine? Maybe life’s distractions, spiritual fatigue, or lack of inspiration have dulled your passion for God’s Word. But Scripture reminds us that “the word of God is living and active” (Hebrews 4:12)—it’s not just words on a page, but a divine conversation meant to transform our hearts. Joe Navarro, known online as @joechristianguy encourages us in today's prayer and devotional to approach the Bible not as a chore, but as a gift from our loving Father. By asking God to renew our desire for His Word, experimenting with new ways of study, and remembering that Scripture is for transformation, not just information, we can rediscover joy in meeting God daily through His truth. Main Takeaways God’s Word is living and active—it has power to refresh our weary souls. Prayer is the starting point: ask God to rekindle your hunger for Scripture. Changing your approach—like trying a new translation, using audio Bible, or joining a group—can spark renewed excitement. Bible study is not just about knowledge, but about transformation. Delight, not obligation, is what God desires for us as we engage His Word. Bible Verse References Hebrews 4:12 – God’s Word is living and active. Guest Bio: As an atheist transformed by the Word of God, Mariel Davenport knows the power of seeking God through Scripture. She is passionate about equipping ladies of all ages to tend their souls with the Word through her TEND method. As a trained Bible teacher with Precepts Ministries and Community Bible Study and a mentor for Florish Writers and Hope Writers, Mariel currently has a Bible study contract with Our Daily Bread Publishers. Married for over 25 years to her college sweetheart, and a retired homeschool mom of two grown sons, Mariel enjoys salsa from her garden as she pursues the Gardener who tends her soul.   Show Summary: What has been your experience in your personal Bible study time? Do you often follow a study or just open your Bible? Soon after she gave her life to Christ, Mariel Davenport found herself focusing on Bible studies more than the actual Word of God. As she turned her attention back to Scripture and spent time in her salsa garden, she developed a method of Bible study called the TEND method, based on her gardening habits. Join hosts Elisa Morgan and Vivian Mabuni as they learn Mariel's testimony and the TEND method during this insightful God Hears Her conversation.   Notes and Quotes:  “I was tending to my salsa garden that summer, and I really felt like the Lord was reminding me that is how He tends to me. It's just little by little by little. It can just be slow and methodical and intentional.” —Mariel Davenport  “If we can lean in and look at just a few verses at a time and ask ‘what is this teaching about God?' it is amazing how He [the Holy Spirit] will illuminate that to us.” —Mariel Davenport  “We serve a triune God. He Himself is community, and He created us for community.” —Mariel Davenport  “God is pursuing the heart of every single one of us if we would just come to Him. Even in my skepticism, anger, and pride, God was still willing to reveal Himself to me when I got into His Word. He saw my need and met me right there.” —Mariel Davenport  “I really think that the more we say 'I don't know what I'm doing,' the more He'll say, ‘That's exactly where you need to be.' Because it is in our weakness that His power is made perfect.” —Mariel Davenport  “Our need of Jesus is really the whole point.” —Mariel Davenport  “Be careful that you don't believe the lies that you can't understand Scripture. No matter who you are, if the Holy Spirit lives in you then you can, by the power and grace of God, understand His Word. Don't let culture and the distractions tell you otherwise, because God is faithful to His Word and He will accomplish what He set out to do with it.” —Mariel Davenport  Verses:  Ephesians 4   Mark 13 – Jesus talking about His second coming; being on guard and awake. Deuteronomy 29:29  Related Episodes: GHH Ep 146 – Reading Truth with Amanda Williams: https://godhearsher.org/podcast/reading-truth/  Links:  Mariel Davenport's Website: https://marieldavenport.com/ Ruth: Finding Grace in the Unexpected: https://a.co/d/64UKS7T God Hears Her website: https://go.odb.org/ghh191  Subscribe to the God Hears Her YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@GodHearsHerODBM God Hears Her Survey: http://godhearsher.org/survey

Romans 8:3-4 — According to Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones in this sermon on Romans 8:3–4, the Christian life is about trusting in God. Salvation comes not through works, but as a free gift in Christ Jesus. All attempts to seek God on one's own are doomed to fail for it is God that reveals Himself and gives the gospel. What is the gospel? It is the message that Christ has died for sinners in order that they would not have to suffer for their own sin. For under the law, there is condemnation but Jesus died in order to fulfil the law. Christians are to live now in the power of Christ and seek holiness and righteousness. Yet, the Bible never says that humanity will be completely free from sin in this life. Nevertheless, Christians are still free from the power of the flesh and sin. By trusting in Jesus, they are made right with God and though they sin, their hope remains in Christ and not themselves. Dr. Lloyd-Jones preaches the most important message because it concerns the eternal destiny of everyone: “do you believe in Jesus?”

How Is the Word of God Living and Active? (Hebrews 4:12)

    Your Daily Bible Verse

Bible Verse of the Day: "For the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart." – Hebrews 4:12 How Is the Word of God Living and Active? (Hebrews 4:12) Hebrews 4:12 reminds us that Scripture is not just ink on a page but a living, active force in the lives of believers. Unlike human words or philosophies, God’s Word is constantly at work—penetrating, discerning, and transforming us. The imagery of a “two-edged sword” underscores Scripture’s precision. It cuts deep, revealing hidden motivations and exposing the true state of our hearts. Nothing is beyond its reach—not our thoughts, not our intentions, not even the parts of us we try to keep hidden. This verse also carries both comfort and challenge. Comfort, because God’s Word brings life, direction, and encouragement. Challenge, because it confronts us with truth, reminding us that nothing is hidden from God’s gaze. The call is clear: approach His Word with humility, letting it shape us into people who live in step with His will. Daily Meditation God’s Word is alive, speaking across all times and cultures. It penetrates beyond outward behavior, reaching our deepest thoughts and motives. Scripture is an instrument of both encouragement and correction. Through the Word, we encounter God’s presence and align with His purposes. Let’s Pray Father, I come to You honestly—sometimes my heart feels distant, and my excitement for Your Word fades beneath the weight of life’s distractions. But I know Your Word is living and powerful, and I long for that closeness again. Please rekindle a deep passion within me to seek You through Scripture. Open my eyes to see the beauty, truth, and life in every page. Stir my spirit with fresh hunger to know You more and to treasure Your voice above all else. Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve treated Your Word casually or out of routine. Help me approach it with awe and expectation, knowing that You are ready to speak each time I open my Bible. Let my heart burn with joy and wonder as I encounter You in new ways. Teach me to delight in Your truth and to let it transform me daily. In Jesus’ name, Amen. There is a difference between memorizing different facts about God and Scripture and actually meditating on the truth we find in Scripture so that it makes a difference in our lives. When we read the Bible we need to chew on the things that it says, thinking deeply and praying about how we can apply it.

When we face uncertainty, when life gets hard, when things happen that we can’t explain, we’ll often ask: Where is God? But every Christian should realize they are never alone. Jesus is with you. Pastor Greg Laurie shares more in this message. Notes: Focus verse - Genesis 22 Matthew 28:20 (NKJV)“Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Psalm 23:4 (NKJV)“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,I will fear no evil; For You are with me;Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” Sometimes our feelings need to catch up with our faith. #1 Joseph was in a prison cell. He probably felt all alone and abandoned. He was there, not because he broke a law, but because he kept one—God’s law. God was in the prison cell with Joseph. Genesis 50:20 (NKJV)"You meant it for evil; but God meant it for good—to save many people alive.” #2 Let’s go from a prison to a palace and think of Esther. Queen Vashti, to her credit, refused. She would not be humiliated or objectified, not even by the king. Vashti is a role model for young girls and women today.Don’t ever let some guy reduce you to a mere object. You are a woman made in the image God. If you present yourself cheaply, don’t expect to be valued royally. A man needs to value you for who you are on the inside, not only the outside. The most attractive thing is to be a godly and principled woman. Through the providence of God, Esther became the queen of Persia. God is always at work in the life of the believer, every hour of every day. God is now here! Providence comes from the Latin prōvidentia; “pro” meaning "before" or "ahead of time” and “videntia” meaning “to see.” God is in control. #3 The story of Israel at the Red Sea.They were between a rock and a hard place. Exodus 14:13–14 (NLT) Exodus 14:13–14 (NLT) Colossians 1:16–17 Exodus 14:19 A Christophany is an appearance of Jesus in the Old Testament. John 8:56–58 (NKJV)"Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad." John 8:56–58 (NKJV)Then the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?" John 8:56–58 (NKJV)Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM!" Luke 24:27 The disciples on the Emmaus Road were literally listening to God incarnate describe His Old Testament appearances. Jesus didn’t begin in Bethlehem; He has always been. The story of redemption started a long time ago in a garden. The Christmas story begins with a tree: the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Adam and Eve sinned and lost that sweet fellowship with God. Genesis 3:8 (NLT)“When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the LORD God walking about in the garden.” We can never escape the presence of God. When you walk with God, it is a source of comfort. 1 John 1:9 (NKJV)“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us.” James 1:14–15 (NLT)“Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow,it gives birth to death.” The Bible says, “Christ was slain from the foundation of the world.” Genesis 3:15 Pharaoh tried to exterminate the Jews starting with the Hebrew baby boys. Wicked Haman tried to have the Jews wiped off the face of the earth. King Herod hearing that one was born, “King of the Jews,”tried to kill Jesus, but that too failed. Nothing would stop Messiah from coming.Nothing will stop Christ from coming again either. #4 The story of Abraham and Isaac on Mount Moriah. Read Genesis 22 The two of them went together.Genesis 22:8 That is exactly what happened when Jesus went to the cross for us. This gives a glimpse of Calvary from the Father’s perspective, sacrificing His Son, His only Son. Genesis 22:11 Christ died in our place and absorbed the wrath of God. --- Learn more about Greg Laurie and Harvest Ministries at harvest.org. In this Bible Story, Jesus speaks of generosity through the story of a glutinous rich man and a poor beggar. The rich man gorged on his wealth with no attention to the sick and cold beggar right at his door. As a result, the rich man suffered when he died, but the poor man was restored. This story is inspired by Luke 16:19-31. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.Today's Bible verse is Luke 16:25 from the King James Version.Episode 199: Another time as Jesus was teaching His disciples He told them the story of an ignorant rich man and a pitiable beggar. The rich man was selfish and indifferent to the suffering of the poor beggar that lived in front of his gate. When they died, it was Lazarus, the poor beggar, that was in the home of Abraham enjoying the good things he missed out on in life, while the rich man was in Hades tormented by hunger and thirst. Though the rich man begged Abraham to send Lazarus to warn his family about this, he refused saying they have The Word of God already to warn them, if they don't listen to this, they won't listen to anything else.Hear the Bible come to life as Pastor Jack Graham leads you through the official BibleinaYear.com podcast. Romans 8:3-4 — Just how does Christ's death condemn sin? In this sermon from Romans 8:3–4 titled “Christ's Sacrifice Condemns Sin,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones says that the death of Christ is not only the foundation of justification before God, but it is the source of sanctification. Sin can only be fully and finally overcome by Jesus's death on the cross in humanity's place. While the Bible is clear that no one can ever be perfect in this life, this does not mean that Christians are not always being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. Those who say that they are Christians while living a life totally devoid of the fruits of the Spirit are living a lie. For all those that are justified by Christ are sanctified by his Holy Spirit. This sermon brings the timeless message of the need of salvation and Jesus Christ the Savior. It not only tells of sin, but also of God's grace in giving His only Son that Christians might be justified. This sermon asks all the questions: “do I believe in Christ for my justification? Am I trusting in him alone?”

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Are small Bible colleges on life support in America? In this week's episode, Alex and Scott welcome Dr. Jim Lytle, former president of Clarks Summit University and former ABWE missionary to South Africa, to discuss the enduring importance of Christian institutions and the plight facing Bible colleges today. They explore how Bible colleges have historically served as crucial training grounds for mobilizing missionaries, shaping young believers' worldviews, and fostering a heart for cross-cultural ministry. Lytle emphasizes that the purpose of these schools was not only theological education but also defining reality for students—helping them see their lives in the context of God's global mission. They also address the challenges facing Christian higher education today, including declining enrollment, rising costs, parental hesitancy toward missions, and cultural changes that have shifted students' perspectives. They discuss the growing need for local churches to take on a greater role in developing and sending workers, the later age at which many missionaries are now mobilized, and the unique openness of Gen Z to purpose-driven and clearly defined callings. Key Topics The role of Christian institutions like Bible colleges in missions mobilization and shaping students' worldview and calling Challenges for Christian higher education (enrollment, finances, cultural shifts) Trends in mobilizing Gen Z for missions and ministry Need for clearly defined, purpose-driven calls to action Explore your calling to global missions at ABWE's 24-Hour DEMO event.
