On this episode of The Jon Gordon Podcast, I sit down with Rafi Kohan, author, cultural observer, and the mind behind Trash Talk: The Only Book About Destroying Your Rivals That Isn't Total Garbage.   What started as a casual Zoom between new friends quickly turned into a lively deep dive into the world of competitive banter, all captured here in real time. Together, Rafi and I explore the fascinating, untold science and history of trash talk. He breaks down why trash talk is more than just gamesmanship on the field, it's a fundamental part of human behavior, threaded through ancient stories from the Bible to the Homeric poems, and alive in everything from politics to playgrounds. We get into how trash talk manipulates attention, anxiety, motivation, and even performance, and why some of the world's greatest athletes and public figures use it to their advantage.   Rafi shares wild stories, including some next-level antics from a soccer goalie who turned mental distraction into an art form, reveals why even the most positive folks can't resist a little friendly ribbing (looking at you, Ken Blanchard), and reflects on how the lessons of trash talking stretch far beyond sports, touching on politics, performance, resilience, and even moral character. We also riff on modern-day masters of the craft (think Muhammad Ali to Donald Trump) and the fine line between competition that lifts us up versus rivalry that tears us down. If you've ever wondered why we talk smack, how to handle it when it happens, or what it really says about us, you'll find insight and plenty of laughs in this episode.   Whether you're a serious competitor, a sports fan, or someone who's just curious about why people do what they do, this conversation brings fresh perspective, energy, and practical takeaways on embracing pressure, building grit, and becoming the kind of rival that makes everyone better. And yes, there's a little trash talk between us too. If you want to rethink the way you handle challenges, on the court, at work, or in life, this episode is for you.   Rafi Kohan is an award-winning sports journalist and dynamic keynote speaker. He is the author, most recently, of Trash Talk: The Only Book About Destroying Your Rivals That Isn't Total Garbage, which explores the phenomenon of verbal gamesmanship in sports, and everywhere, and what it reveals about our ability to perform under pressure.    About Rafi,   Kohan's first book, The Arena, is a wide-ranging examination of the modern American sports stadium and was a finalist for the 2018 PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sports Writing. Previously, Kohan has served as deputy editor at the New York Observer and as executive editorial director for the Atlantic's creative marketing studio. His writing has appeared in numerous publications, including GQ, the New York Times, Men's Journal, Rolling Stone, and the Wall Street Journal, among many others, and his thought leadership on the surprising benefits of trash talk has been featured on Fast Company, Scientific American, NPR's Science Friday, BBC's Unexpected Elements, and Re:Thinking with Adam Grant.   Here's a few additional resources for you… Follow me on Instagram: @JonGordon11 Order my new book 'The 7 Commitments of a Great Team' today! In this episode of the Mind Shift Podcast, Aaron McManus and his father, Erwin Raphael McManus, dive into the turbulence in Los Angeles, reflecting on the city's long history of unrest and social disorder. From the 1992 riots to recent immigration protests and political tensions, they describe LA as a city in constant flux. Erwin contrasts this with his recent travel experiences across the country, while Aaron reflects on the emotional impact of ongoing chaos and the deep gratitude he feels for the people anchoring his life. The episode opens by framing these reflections as a backdrop for a deeper exploration of meaning, purpose, and faith.Aaron introduces a new chapter in the podcast: a scriptural series beginning with the book of Genesis. Drawing from Erwin's decades of theological teaching, they set the tone for a thoughtful and disruptive exploration of the Bible. They discuss the relevance of Genesis in both literal and metaphorical terms, highlighting the importance of mythology in shaping belief systems. Erwin pushes back against rigid interpretations, inviting listeners into a conversation that values mystery, imagination, and the power of narrative in uncovering spiritual truths.Focusing on Genesis 1:1–3, Erwin breaks down the creation story by emphasizing the symbolic roles of the four elements—earth, wind, fire, and water—and their resonance with modern scientific ideas. He draws parallels between Genesis and concepts in quantum physics, like energy and light, suggesting that the ancient text contains insights consistent with contemporary science. The discussion highlights the phrase “formless and empty,” with Erwin urging listeners to view it through a symbolic lens rather than a strictly physical one. This segment reveals how scripture and science can coexist as complementary frameworks for understanding our origins. The episode then turns to the sequence of creation, specifically the importance of water and the emergence of light. Erwin explains that water's presence before light speaks to its foundational role in life, while the delayed creation of the sun reshapes how we interpret biblical time. He critiques the literal seven-day creation view, arguing that “days” in Genesis don't equate to modern 24-hour periods. This opens a discussion on energy, light, and the gradual unfolding of creation, presenting a more layered and expansive view of Genesis that bridges faith and physics.Toward the end, Aaron and Erwin explore the creation of stars and the concept of time, leading into a conversation about astrology and sacred signs. They emphasize that the stars are not meant to predict fate but to signal the rhythm of sacred time. The episode closes with reflections on humanity being made in God's image—imbued with purpose and interconnected with all creation—setting the stage for future episodes that will continue unpacking Genesis as both a spiritual and cosmic roadmap.

In this Bible Story, we watch the fragile kingdom of Jeroboam descend into idolatry and pride. Jeroboam erects altars of golden calves and establishes pagan priests. The Lord sends a man from Judah to rebuke him, but his disobedience does not cease. This story is inspired by 1 Kings 12:25-13:8 & 13:33-34. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.Today's Bible verse is 1 Kings 12:28 from the King James Version.Episode 118: Jeroboam, Israel's new king, built a new capital in Shechem to separate themselves from Judah. However, because the temple of God was in Judah, people would still travel from his kingdom to worship in Judah. Jeroboam feared this would lead to the loss of his kingdom and his life. So he, like Aaron so many years before, made two golden calves and introduced them as Israel's new gods. Slowly Jeroboam added more and more idols into Israel's public worship. God would not stand for the corruption of His people and sent a prophet to let him know what would become of his idolatrous altar.Hear the Bible come to life as Pastor Jack Graham leads you through the official BibleinaYear.com podcast. Welcome to Day 2651 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom – Theology Thursday – “The Unseen Realm: God and the Gods” – Supernatural Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2651 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2651 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Today, we begin a new focus on this 2nd of 16 segments of our Theology Thursday lessons. I will read through the book Supernatural, written by Hebrew Bible scholar, professor, and mentor, the late Dr. Michael S. Heiser. Supernatural is a condensed version of his comprehensive book ‘The Unseen Realm.' If these readings pique your interest, I would recommend that you read ‘The Unseen Realm.' Today, we will read through chapter two: ‘The Unseen Realm: God and the Gods.' People are fascinated by the supernatural and the superhuman. Just think about the entertainment industry in recent years. Thousands of books, television shows, and movies from the past decade have explored themes such as angels, aliens, monsters, demons, ghosts, witches, magic, vampires, werewolves, and superheroes. Many of Hollywood's blockbuster franchises feature the supernatural: the X-Men, the Avengers, the Harry Potter series, Superman, and the Twilight Saga. Television shows like Fringe, and, of course, Supernatural and The X-Files, have dedicated followings even long after filming new episodes ends. And really, haven't these things always been popular—in tales, in books, in art? Why? One answer is that they're an escape from the ordinary. They offer us a world that's more interesting and exciting than our own. There's something about good versus evil, magnified on a cosmic scale, that thrills us. The epic struggle by the heroes of Middle-earth (Gandalf, Frodo, and company) against the Dark Lord Sauron in The Lord of the Rings trilogy has captivated readers (and now moviegoers) for over half a century now. The more otherworldly the villain, the more spectacular the triumph. On another level, people are drawn to other worlds because, as the book of Ecclesiastes puts it, God has “put eternity into [our] hearts” (Eccl. 3:11). There's something about the human condition that longs for something beyond human experience—something divine. The Apostle Paul also wrote about this yearning. He taught that it comes from just being alive in the world God has made. The creation bears witness to a creator, and, therefore, to a realm beyond our own (Rom. 1:18–23). Paul said this impulse was so powerful that it had to be willfully suppressed (v. 18). And yet we don't seem to think of the epic story of the Bible in the same way we think of our own tales of the supernatural in books, movies, and legend. There are reasons for that, and they go beyond the lack of special effects. For some, the Bible's characters are too ordinary or grandfatherly. They don't feel dynamic or heroic. After all, these are the same people and the same stories we've been hearing since Sunday school as kids. Then there's the cultural barrier. It's hard for us to identify with what seems like an endless parade of ancient shepherds and men wearing robes, like so many actors in your church's nativity play. But I think an even bigger factor in why science fiction or supernatural fantasy captures our imagination more...
