I was keen to interview him for the Business of Hearing Podcast to hear his thoughts and understand exactly how more clinics can improve their sales performance.
Always a blast to talk with my friends, Brad Stewart and Bobby Amaru from Saliva. If you're in the SE Michigan area, swing by District 142 on Monday, September 25th to see the show. Their new record dropped a couple weeks back called Revelations. It was an album written and recorded before the passing of original guitarist, Wayne Swinny. Bobby said they put the album out to honor Wayne. They even redid some of the artwork to pay tribute to the late ax slinger. They talked about the backdrop they're playing in front of each night. "Everybody knows, when you see it, that Raiders logo." Their was a lot of Wayne talk. That dude was so nice. "No ego, one of a kind" is how Brad described him. As Booby recalled "He was always honest, a great person." Bobby said he hasn't watched their latest video for "Come Back Stronger" that they recorded just days before Wayne's death. You can see the video below. We talked a lot about the writing and recording process for the album. We always talked about the split in the band with Saliva, and original singers Josey Scott's Saliva. "It's an interesting situation that we're to be quit honest." "It's an awesome thing!" Bobby added about Josey also being out on tour singing these songs. They went on to talk more on this topic. There was the usual talk of football. These guys love their NFL. If you follow Bobby on Instagram with his daughter. If you haven't seen it, him and his daughter cover some of the biggest songs in rock. He told me how it started, about some bands that have asked them to cover their songs and more. Some people may or may not know, but Brad was a writing partner with Wes Scantlin from Puddle Of Mudd before joining Shinedown. He told the story of writing "Control" and how he met Brent Smith and became a member of Shinedown. LOVE talking to my buds from Saliva....can't wait to see them Monday at District 142.

Dr. Brad Stewart is the Founder of AudCoach, his consultancy that helps audiologists improve their practices. He built his own clinic up to seven figures of annual revenue in under 8 years before exiting. Since then, he has assisted almost 400 clinics and more than 200 practice owners achieve greater profits and more efficient treatment. Dr. Stewart is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of North Texas and a Chief Audiology Consultant at Audflow. In this episode… Many audiology practices are operating much less efficiently than they should be. More specifically, some clinics are completely dependent on the head audiologist to make any and all decisions. This leads to a clunky, unoptimized system that fails to help patients and generate more revenue. Dr. Brad Stewart is an audiologist who built up his practice and automated the majority of the clinic's operations. The result was a profitable location that he exited within 8 years of starting. He now lends that same experience to other audiology clinics looking to improve. In this episode of the ListenUp! Podcast, Dr. Mark Syms interviews Dr. Brad Stewart, the Founder of AudCoach, to discuss the best ways to automate and optimize your audiology practice. They start with Dr. Stewart's own experience with his clinic and how he advises his clients. The two go into more detail on how to perform initial consultations, leaving a lasting impression, and what's holding back most practices.
STOP Selling, Start HELPING: Why Motivational Interviewing is Essential The one word that describes Dr. Brad Stewart is simple - passionate. Brad believes that better hearing is served through motivational interviewing techniques to ensure trust is built between the provider and the patient. Think back to the last time you went to the doctor and didn't "jive" with the provider. Did they lack empathy? Were they just having an "off" day? Were they rushing through the appointment? Chances are, you got home and said to yourself, "Well, I think I am going to get a second opinion." In hearing healthcare, we really only have one shot to make sure that the new patients that come to our office for the first time have the BEST experience possible. Why? Because said patient waited 7-10 years to see you, the hearing healthcare provider. If they have a lackluster experience, they may just hang up their hearing cleats and say, "I'll try again in another 7 years." This is not what we want! What is Motivational Interviewing? The most current version of MI is described in detail in Miller and Rollnick (2013) Motivational Interviewing: Helping people to change (3rd edition). Key qualities include:MI is a guiding style of communication, that sits between following (good listening) and directing (giving information and advice).MI is designed to empower people to change by drawing out their own meaning, importance and capacity for change.MI is based on a respectful and curious way of being with people that facilitates the natural process of change and honors client autonomy. The In-Office Hearing Aid DemoDuring this episode, Blaise and Brad discuss the importance of demoing hearing technology during the patient's office visit. The in-office hearing aid demo is an essential element of a patient's first visit. One of the reasons office's should implement the in-office demo is because patient's have been waiting YEARS to hear with increased clarity, you want your new patient to leave your office excited about their new hearing world! (Disclaimer: of course, the in-office demo depends on the patients type and degree of hearing loss.) Brad has strong opinions about the in-office demo and states, "We have the ability during a 90 minute consultation to change that and to let them experience what hearing is like again. And for a lot of these people, it's been half a decade, a decade, 20 years since they've heard normally. And so that's like such an experience, such a light bulb moment. It's a peak experience. It's something they will remember throughout their life this time when they heard well again. And that we would just like for the sake of efficiency or time just wouldn't do that, and wouldn't allow them to experience such a transformative moment, seems crazy to me. And I have a really hard time rationalizing why you wouldn't do that." Bobby joined Saliva in 2011 and has released 3 albums with the band. From the official Saliva website: After acquiring front man Bobby Amaru in 2011, Saliva became infused with new blood, energy, and spirit. The same energy launched Saliva's career in 2001 with the release, Every Six Seconds – a certified Double Platinum-selling album, containing the hits, “Click Click Boom” and 2002 Grammy nominated, “Your Disease.” Saliva's in-your-face, anthemic writing style continued with a certified Gold-selling album Back in to Your System with hits: “Always,” “Raise Up,” and the Nikki Sixx co-written, “Rest In Pieces.” Saliva has toured the USA and world with bands including (but not limited to), Sevendust, Aerosmith, and KISS. They've also appeared on the main stage at countless fairs, festivals and bike rallies – Sturgis, Rockin The Rivers, Daytona Bike Week, Rock on the Range, Welcome to Rockville to name a few. Saliva has become a unified team that will not be rushed or pushed into deals that are not advantageous toward the growth and expansion of Saliva as a whole. If anyone knows how to build a mobile audiology practice, it's Dr. Brad Stewart! The buzz word in audiology today is "access." But, what does that mean and how does mobile audiology address this problem? Simple. Hearing care providers are hitting the road and bringing their services to patients in nursing homes, independent living centers, and the like. Gearing Up to Hit the Road When Brad graduated with his Doctorate of Audiology, he knew he wanted to build a business model that implemented best practices and resulted in positive patient outcomes. What attracted Brad to mobile audiology was the low overheard costs and the ability to make a difference in the lives of the hearing impaired on a personal level. Brad talks about the importance of letting go of the ego and practicing empathy. When he first started his mobile audiology practice, he reported that he was calling bingo at a few of the nursing homes. You see, Brad didn't care about his title. He cared about reconnecting his patients to their family members and friends. Making Adjustments in Real Time to the Patient's Hearing Aids Brad had a patient who had a really challenging hearing loss. She wanted to be able to go to different social hours at her senior living community, hang out with her friends, and have conversations while live music was going on, which is a tough situation. The environment she wanted to be in had high ceilings, echo, overall, the room had poor acoustics. Brad visited her community after hours one evening when one of the social gatherings were being hosted. He brought his laptop, connected to her hearing aids, and made adjustments to her hearing aids in real time! During this "appointment," they had a little audience - a little crowd of people that were all curious what they were doing. They were all gathered around watching Brad make adjustments to this woman's hearing aids, and then seeing her reaction in real time as she was hearing better! The residents that were watching them made statements line, "Oh my goodness, this is incredible!" Brad reports this was a very powerful experience for him and his patient. The Mobile Practice You're a skilled hearing care expert who gets great results for your patients.BUT you're understandably concerned about third party "insurance" companies who don't pay even close to what you're worth, media that portrays you as the greedy middleman, and ongoing disruption and commoditization from outside forces. You entered this profession to provide patient care at the highest level, but now you're feeling the pressure to make compromises. You're looking for something different. Something that lets you provide that extravagant, world-class, ear-to-ear grin level of care...and get paid accordingly.A good mobile audiology practice with a steady stream of patients consists of 5 simple business systems: Marketing, Education, Conversion, Treatment, and Follow-Up System. Ready to hit the road and become that hearing care rockstar you know you can be? Apply now and connect with Dr. Brad Stewart. No seriously, start now! Your patients are waiting for you! Musical acts currently filling arenas fall into a few categories: pop, electronic, country, and legacy. The notion of modern or contemporary rock bands packing enormo-domes feels like a fossil, but don't tell that to platinum-selling Shinedown, who's been packing thousands-of-seats houses for years. The group was founded by vocalist Brent Smith in 2001, after his previous band, Dreve, disbanded). He enlisted Jasin Todd (guitarist), Brad Stewart (bass), and Barry Kerch (drums). Zach Myers joined the fold in 2005 (as a touring member). He and current bassist Eric Bass (no joke) first earned album credits with 2008's smash The Sound of Madness. (Rig Rundown alumnus https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-nick-perri (Nick Perri) was a short-time member of Shinedown and earned lead guitar credits on TSOM before fully handing over the 6-string reins to Myers.) The quartet's ability to fuse post-grunge pyrotechnics, four-on-the-floor rockers, and glossy, arms-in-the-air anthems, and their dynamic acoustic performances, have earned them 17 No. 1 hits on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart. (If you include the other Billboard charts, they've got three more.) They also have three platinum albums (three more are certified gold in the U.S.), and six additional platinum singles. If guitar truly is in a slump in pop culture and the mainstream, somebody forgot to tell Shinedown. When PG's Chris Kies first talked tone tools with Myers and Bass in https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundowns/shinedown (2013), they had some gear, and even some cool signature stuff. But this time, the war chest was on another level. Before their May 4 headline show at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena, supporting their new, seventh album, Planet Zero, the duo flexed their rockstar credentials and carted out 40-plus instruments. Myers contends he uses every one of his guitars on a nightly basis. And Bass details his signature line of Prestige basses, which incorporate an ingenious thumb rest. Myers also shows off an irreplaceable PRS created by the late American fashion designer and entrepreneur Virgil Abloh (Off-White), and he explains how a custom-painted https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/prs-silver-sky-john-mayer-review (Silver Sky) earned him some serious eye rolls and scoffs. Plus, their techs break down the power and might that help them rock the rafters. Brought to you by https://ddar.io/XSE.RR (D'Addario XS Electric Strings).

Brad Stewart has a very unique career story that I am excited to share with you today. Brad left school and went into the tattoo industry where he spent roughly the next 10 years. He lived and breathed the lifestyle – gangsters, parties, drugs, you name it! Then he decided his life needed to change, and he did a complete ‘180' – He started to have his tattoos (hands, throat, neck) removed, and moved into Real Estate, before making his way into the corporate arena where he is now a marketing manager at a superannuation fund in Sydney. He has done this within 3 years of turning corporate, and has no university degree or formal education. He has knuckled down and done the hard work. His experience might be valuable to you if you are out there stuck in a rut at the moment and feel there is no way out of what you're doing, or that you'll never get to where you want to go. Or, to those who want to change careers and are too scared, or don't want to leave their comfort zone - Brad's story will inspire you and instill hope. Guest: Brad Stewart, AuD - Owner of ClearLife Hearing Care; Co-Founder of AuDflow Topic: Leveling Up the Hearing Care Experience Brad joins Dave this week to share his experience of working in private practice audiology for the last 10 years and how he views the evolution underway in the hearing health industry. They discuss Brad's hearing care consulting company, AuDflow, which is designed to help practices re-think their total patient experience - physical & digital - using a variety of innovative tools and services. For independent private practitioners competing against a slew of new competitors, from an increasing amount of big-box retailers to online sellers, it's important to match parity when it comes to the things that the new competition does well, such as digital marketing and automation. As the two discuss, the key to success into the future might be a combination of blending the things that are appealing of the new competition, with the non-commodifiable expertise inherent from one's education. It's then a matter of properly fusing the two together to create an overall patient experience that's harder and harder for the new competition to replicate or differentiate from themselves. I've often said on this podcast that some of the truest tests of leadership happen during a crisis. But even if you're someone who thrives in high-stakes situations, there is inevitably what I'll call, “the drop.” You can only run at full steam for so long … Trust me. So, what would you do if your job was to manage a crisis that was never-ending? That kind of leadership is unique and it's something my guest, Brad Stewart, has in spades. Brad is the Chief Operating Officer of the North Texas Food Bank, which last year alone provided nearly 100 Million meals for people experiencing food insecurity. They have been on the frontline of the hunger crisis for almost 40 years, but even they were surprised by the scale of need we would experience in our communities. And still, they persevered. Brad and I discuss his journey to servant leadership, the lessons to be learned by taking risks, and the resilience that can be built when a team steps up together. Brad Stewart, Minister of Discipleship, preached his sermon "Jesus in Jerusalem," based out of Luke 2:25-40, on Sunday morning, December 29, 2019 as part of the Smile in the Mystery sermon series.
It was November 2010. While hosting a conference in Ft. Worth, I reconnected with my dear friend, Brad Stewart. After dinner, he invited me to a rehearsal for his church choir. When we arrived at the small church in Arlington, he asked me to come and sit in the choir. I said, “Brad, I don't sing.” He said, “You don't have to. Just sit with us.” As they began to sing, I closed my eyes and there, in the middle of the choir, I felt “surrounded” by the voices of angels. The voices of God. This became the inspiration for the song, Surround, on Brad's new album, “Saved From The Fire.” It is one of a handful, I've had the honor of co-writing with my longtime friend. It is with great pleasure that Bradley Jay Stewart is my guest on this week's radio show. I know you'll be inspired by his story, as we premiere “Surround.” ~Sonny Melendrez Show notes: https://SonnyRadio.com/Bradley-Jay-Stewart

In this episode we talk about just going for it, how we are often our biggest roadblocks, how we get true connection with people when we drop the stories we tell and so much more!

We talked about numerous things.... *What the band has going on * New drummer Tosha Jones * Wayne keeping the band going * Thoughts on Wes Scatlin on this tour and how he's doing * The highlights of each of their careers * How Brad co-wrote Puddle Of Mudd's "Control" * What major artist Brad was almost joined * A great Eddie Van Halen/Shinedown story * Heroes in this business * Dumbest questions they've been asked Al Beck gives us updates on Woodstock, Aerosmith, Ozzy and Jack White in today's Rock News. Brad Stewart of Stewart Mountain Lodging in Sundance, Utah is one of my best buddies in the industry. I think it’s fair to say that I admire his work as much as he appreciates mine. More specifically, I really admire how Brad thinks in systems and processes. And as a property manager, one of Brad’s big turning points was with regards to his owners: like we’d strengthen any good relationship, he and Vicky created a way to close the communication gap with a conduit of communication. This is a great lesson for anyone in the vacation rental industry looking to improve clarity with their team: think in benchmarks, standards, and common metrics: use technology to channel your voices into a central path. What are you passionate about? In the outdoor markets, and especially as entrepreneurs, passion is such an important asset. But it can also, sometimes, get in the way of our own clear thinking about the ideas and projects we're so in love with. This is why I'm so excited to be talking with Al Tabor, tech worker and market forecaster extraordinaire about what we in the outdoor markets can learn from tech start-ups. He's translating what he knows about how tech startups get going and making it applicable to outdoor startups. And it's working – Al has worked wonders with Sierra Designs, Mountain Headwear and recent visitors to the Intrepid Entrepreneur Podcast, Martin Zemitis of Slingfin, and Brad Stewart of Caravan Outpost. Al and I both know that the outdoor markets are a completely different animal than tech start-ups, but something Al says every entrepreneur should read is The Lean Start-up, by Eric Ries. Al is admittedly not a business book person, so if he says it's good, you better believe him! The Lean Startup mentality is all about learning. You need to learn what path your business is on, and if this path will lead to success! And, you need to learn it as fast and cheaply as possible, to save yourself a lot of time and heartache. This sounds overwhelming, but Al's talking me through the steps on how to evaluate your startup idea and find your minimum value product, your MVP! Something else that we entrepreneurs in the outdoor markets can also learn from tech—and from basketball!—is to pivot! If you find out your idea isn't working, keep one foot in it, and spin until you find a new opening. This is where passion can be a challenge to us outdoor market entrepreneurs. We're so in love with our project, we don't want to change anything. But Al says, you have to keep one foot in that passion, and use the other to pivot to a new way forward. Who knows what you'll find! Al's giving some great examples of what it looks like to pivot in the outdoor markets by talking about his work with Slingfin and Caravan Outpost. He's also discussing using the Root Cause Analysis system to hit the hard reality of any problem – in business or in your personal life. Bravery in Business Quote “The job of a startup is to learn. More than anything else, you have to figure out if you're on a path that's going to lead to some sort of success” - Al Tabor (click to tweet) Cliff Notes Tech and outdoor markets are different animals, but can still both learn from Lean Startup Methodology Definition of a startup (from Reis) a human endeavor that's trying to deliver a product or a service under conditions of extreme uncertainty. The job of a startup is to learn what path it's on and if this will lead to success. Important to attract and reward investors. Try to make explicit your assumptions. Who are target customers, assumptions about distribution, etc. Once you have made all of this explicit, test it. Find sales or feedback or metrics to validate the assumptions supporting the value of your proposition. If you can't support your proposition value, it's time to pivot (like in basketball). Keep one foot in what you know and spin to find a new opening. Passion can sometimes get in the way of a pivot, because you constrain yourself and are not willing to take one foot off the ground or experiment with an idea that you are in love with Pivoting is probably hard for most passion-driven founders. Need to keep one foot in the passion, and used the other to find a more viable way forward. Learn, Build, Measure cycle part of the Lean Startup. You want to find a way to shorten this cycle as much as possible for efficiency. 5 question approach (Reis calls it Root Cause Analysis, Tabor calls it Root Cause) / Six sigma methodology. Asking “why?” five times (or more!) until you get to the root causes, the “hard reality underpinning the situation” to find the corrective. Continuing to ask “why” can lead to finding an area in which you need to pivot. Leads to clarity. Passion is personal but you have to be clear about the business viability of the product. Minimum viable product (MVP): find the fastest, cheapest way to test your product viability/market to save yourself a lot of time and heartache. The sooner you know you need to pivot, the fast you can move. The Lean Start-Up: Step 1: Define your value of proposition Step 2: Validate this proposition. Step 3: If it's not going to work, pivot. Keep one foot in what you know, and spin around to find a new opening. “You've got to listen to everybody but you don't have to take anybody seriously.” - Al Tabor (click to tweet) Resources SlingFin.com CaravanOutpost.com/ IntrepidEntrepreneur.net/Brad-Steward (Past IE podcast w/ Caravan Outpost founder) IntrepidEntrepreneur.net/Martin-Zemitis (Past IE Podcast w/Martin Zemitis) IntrepidEntrepreneur.net/Dylan-Enright/ (WeFunder IE Podcast) PeakDesign.com/ TheLeanStartup.com/ (Lean Startup book website) YouTube.com/watch?v=fEvKo90qBns (Eric Reis google talk referenced) Show notes: IntrepidEntrepreneur.net/Al-Tabor
