Acclaimed poet and Guggenheim Foundation president Edward Hirsch joins us in an unforgettable episode to discuss his powerful memoir My Childhood in Pieces: A Stand-Up Comedy and a Skokie Elegy. Hirsch reflects on his chaotic upbringing in 1950s Jewish Chicago, his complicated relationships with his parents, and the wild characters who shaped his life. He opens up about the tragic loss of his son Gabriel, how grief became poetry, and why humor and heartbreak often walk hand in hand. From poetic craft and emotional truth to the role of art in a distracted world, this is a raw, funny, and deeply moving conversation about identity, creativity, and resilience. Today's episode is the introduction to phase 2 of the From Ashes to Destiny curriculum which deals with discovering, uncovering and healing our heart wounds which caused or fueled our addiction. Chapter 1 of phase 2 is entitled The Battle For a Heart and it opens with the poem, My Childhood, by Gregory Williams. The key of this moving poem is that the author is searching for someone who will truly see his childhood and understand what it's like being him as an adult. We touch on topics for discussion like abandonment, physical abuse, emotional abuse and the death of parents. The episode closes with the question, "Can we heal the confusion by finding one person who truly understands?" --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/a2d--from-addict-to-disci/support

It is about letting go of that external pressure that we feel on our shoulders every single day, and finally giving yourself permission to be yourself. It is about openly expressing your thoughts, needs, and desires. It is about standing up for what you believe and pursuing your dreams. It is about being in charge of your life, owning your life.In this episode, I'm sharing the story about the moment in my life when I was ready to reclaim my freedom, when I was ready to finally become who I am – who I have always been.EPISODE BREAKDOWN:[01:05] A frustrating incident from my childhood[04:02] My daughter and I moved back in with my parents[04:49] Feeling like a guest and like I didn't have a say in my life[06:49] My mom's disapproval of my sister's tattoo[07:31] When my daughter got sick and I got yelled at[09:21] The tipping point: deciding to reclaim my freedom[11:42] Getting a special tattoo and starting a new chapterOTHER EPISODES YOU MIGHT LIKE:The Page About the First Time I Put Myself First, ReallyHow To Actually Let Go Of Control And Take Charge Of Your Life InsteadMake Peace With Yourself To Create The Impact You Are Here In This World To CreateNavigating Pivotal Moments In Life: How To Get Unstuck and Discover Your Next Step When You Feel LostLife Design 101, Part 1: What Does It Really Mean to Thrive in LifeJOIN BREVERIE CIRCLE:Weekly newsletter for brave, multifaceted women that are ready to embrace who they are, maximize their time and energy, and shine in both career and motherhood (as well as any other life endeavor they choose to pursue) – SIGN UP.CONNECT WITH OLENA:Instagram: @thebreverieEmail: olena@thebreverie.comWebsite: thebreverie.com SUPPORT THE SHOW!Haven't left a review yet? In today's episode we hear a poem entitled My Childhood from my From Ashes to Destiny curriculum and three poems written by people I worked with in their addiction. Two of the poems deal with drug and alcohol addiction and two deal with porn and sexual addiction. All four poems have a common thread, where were or parents when we needed them in our childhood? Where do we turn when there is no one to help us process childhood hurts and wounds? Too often we have no one and find comfort in drugs, alcohol and pornography when we have no one to guide us. He's a former BBC World Service Kabul bureau chief who launched the acclaimed political debate program Open Jirga (a co-production between BBC Media Action and BBC World Service). Shoaib is one of the few Afghan journalists who decided to stay on after the Taliban took power in August, 2021, and he's currently the country director for BBC Media Action, the BBC's international development organisation. Award-winning producer Phil Grabsky joins the show to discuss his new film My Childhood, My Country: Twenty Years in Afghanistan. Phil talks about the continuing story of Mir the young man who he has tacked since he was a little boy growing up in Afghanistan. Phil's film, which just won best international film at the DC International Film Festival, traces Mir growing up under occupation and the strength, resilience, and commitment that is typical of the Afghan people. We get to see what life has been like through the eyes of MIR and we also get to hear Phil reflect on Afghanistan, the role of Nato/US, the comparisons to Ukraine/Russia. Phil points out the mistakes but also points out that the US war and occupation was NOT a total failure.
When trying to envision the bigger picture of one's life or career, the bumps and pains are not always realized on the journey of becoming an accomplished professional. Although most of us would prefer that we coast through life on easy street, the truth is that no one accomplishes anything in this world without the scars to prove it. This is the case for inspirational domestic violence advocate Latosha Barnes of Chicago, IL. The founder and director of Patricia's Place domestic violence shelter serves Chicago's west side and south suburban communities. She knows firsthand what it is like to endure the pain and scars of domestic violence. “My first experience with abuse occurred when I was a young girl. I experienced my mother being beaten and introduced to drugs by her ex-husband. Despite my grandmother attempting to shield me from this violence, it would not take long before I realized what was going on.” Although Latosha hoped never to endure the kind of life that her mother chose to overcome, it would not take long before her family's history caught up with her. At the age of 20, four months after marrying her first husband and now a mother of two young children, Latosha began to experience the trauma of spousal abuse. Latosha shares how she, her mother, and grandmother stuck out relationships that would lead to broken bones, hospital stays, and multiple calls to local police. She even watched her ex-husband go after one of her daughters while she attempted to protect Latosha from yet another attack. Enough became enough, and Latosha finally got the courage to file for divorce. “I knew that this was going to be the hardest thing I had ever done. I realized that I was stuck in a pattern started by my grandmother, and now seeing one of my kids endure her first form of abuse, God made it clear that it was time for me to walk away." After walking away, Latosha's future of success would begin to take shape. Beginning with a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies and master's degrees in criminal justice and addiction studies, she also started to put her efforts into helping other women, men, and children escape abusive situations. Along with opening a safe home for other abuse victims, Latosha is quickly becoming a voice for the voiceless through her recently published book, Un-Veil: Surviving Domestic Violence, a memoir and 10-step self-help activity and resource guide for surviving spousal abuse. She is also in the process of publishing her second book entitled, Pieces of My Childhood, which will share an in-depth journey of her life and will be available through She Publishing, LLC. She has begun several domestic violence teaching and counseling programs through Patricia's Place such as the S.T.A.R. Program (Surviving Traumatic Abusive Relationships) and Purple Power. These tools allow women to learn what resources and support systems are available. She has also started a program for kids who have lived in a family of domestic violence. The BBC Today programme presenter, Justin Webb, is known for mixing forensic journalistic skills with being a true gentleman. But he had a difficult childhood, brought up by a complex mother with lots of issues and a step-father with a severe mental illness. When he was eight, his mother told him the presenter he was watching on the news was his father Peter Woods, a man he would never meet. He talks openly about all of this in his fascinating new memoir, “The Gift of Radio, My Childhood and other Trainwrecks.”

With her easy to listen to voice, and her subtly changing accents and rhythm for the Indian and British characters, Mathan performs the third in the Perveen Mistry series. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Robin Whitten discuss this series that evokes the feel of the heat of Bombay. Mistry, the only female lawyer in India, seeks justice for a female Parsi student found dead on the day of Prince Edward VIII's arrival in Bombay, November 1921. Massey paints detailed pictures of a city divided by religions and dominated by British rule. Listeners will find themselves engaged with the well-written and well-performed invitation into Mistry's complex world. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. Published by Recorded Books. Find more audiobook recommendations at audiofilemagazine.com Support for Behind the Mic comes from Naxos AudioBooks. Read by Nicholas Boulton, MY CHILDHOOD is the first in an autobiographical trilogy by the Russian writer and five-time Nobel Prize-nominee Maxim Gorky. Gorky's depiction of 19th-century Russia through the eyes of his younger self is remarkable. As he recalls memories of his youth, contrasting themes and emotions are revealed, from barbaric joy to dark gloom, genuine cruelty and saint-like forbearance. Learn more about your ad choices.

Visit queenofpeaches.com for show notes! Today, I’m incredibly pleased to be speaking with my friend, neighbor, and former bandmate, the poet Tony Trigilio. Tony is the author and editor of 13 books, including, most recently, Ghosts of the Upper Floor (published by BlazeVOX [books] in 2019), which is the third installment in his multivolume poem, The Complete Dark Shadows (of My Childhood). His selected poems, Fuera del Taller del Cosmos, was published in Guatemala by Editorial Poe (translated by Bony Hernández). He is editor of Elise Cowen: Poems and Fragments (published by Ahsahta Press in 2014), and the author of Allen Ginsberg’s Buddhist Poetics (published by Southern Illinois University Press in 2012). Tony coedits the poetry journal Court Green and is an associate editor for Tupelo Quarterly. He is a Professor of English and Creative Writing at Columbia College Chicago. Today we discuss his origin story as a poet, the possibilities that get unlocked by asking a student “tell me more of what you mean by that,” building bridges between the hemispheres of the brain, how playing drums professionally helped Tony unite his practice as a writer with his work as a scholar, and why the best art feels like a friend saying to you, “I’m going to tell you something but it’s hard to say.” For more information about Tony, you can find him online at starve.org.

"Once again, Ahmad Alkhatat uses his excellent writing talents to create sorrowful but beautiful images, this time as he visits the place of his birth, Baghdad, Iraq. The book begins with poems that describe his feelings about the visit and what he sees. “The Cost of Cigarettes,” “In A Random Street in Baghdad,” “Wounds From Iraq,” “At the Airport” and “Baghdad Taxi.” all denote images of the flavor and culture of Baghdad itself. Ahmad also shows his heart and sympathy for what is happening or has happened within Iraq and Syria with such poems as “Flooding in Aleppo,” “The Crying Girl on the Border” and “My Colorful Sorrows In Iraq.” We expect poets to show emotion within their work, but not all do it with such heartbreaking ‘hit on the mark.’ Mr. Alkhatat always has a wish for peace that can be seen in the form of a prayer in his books. This book contains at least two prayers for peace and comfort for Iraq and neighboring countries, “Send My Salutations” and “Will the Gate of Mesopotamia open for us?” (Will someone wake us up and give the key so that our dreams can come true.) “If Santa Clause Was In…” is stunning and worthy of much thought. (If Santa Clause was in Syria, he would never forgive himself, Knowing that all the children waiting in tombs in the dying gardens.) The book ends with “My Childhood” as he reminds those of us in safer places that there is horror and loss going on in other places in the world. While I enjoyed the entire book and gave each poem several reads, there are two that I could return to read every single day for the foreseeable future. The first is the beautifully penned, “The Beautiful Dream of Baghdad.” The other worthy of many reads is “Grief and Palm Trees in Iraq.” -Linda Imbler-
