Between natural disasters, economic volatility, and political chaos, there is a lot to respond to these days. It's important for credit unions to create contingency plans and prepare for crisis. It's equally important to escape the reactivity trap by proactively creating opportunities for joy and connection. That's precisely what Abilene Teachers Federal Credit Union has done with 325 Day, an event with a name that refers both to its date and the credit union's local area code. The idea is to celebrate local businesses, gather community members, and most importantly, have fun! This month, we're joined by Abilene Teacher FCU's Community Development Officer, Elizabeth Gray, and Marketing Director, Kathy Mayer, to talk about the evolution of the event and its growing impact. We also address this month's BIG question: During an era when so much is moving online, why is a sense of place still important and how does your credit union benefit by bringing people together in real life?

(note, this was recorded on Saturday Nov 27th for tortoise shack members) On Saturday a small anti-Trans protest took place in Dublin, in what looks like a continuation of a tiny section of the country intent on importing UK/US style culture wars to Ireland. Rather than dwell on their nonsense, we decided to talk with activist, Community Development Officer with TENI and friend of the shack, Lilith Ferreyra-Carroll. We discuss the real crisis facing Trans people when trying to access healthcare, the fact that 'coming out' as Trans can make you fell like less of a person and more like a case study, and the barriers the State put in front of people who just want to live as themselves. We also chat, thankfully, how Ireland, despite the some mainstream elements rushing to embrace it, is not like the US or UK when it comes to these divisive voices. Many thanks to Lilith for joining us on what was a difficult day. Solidarity. To Help checkout HERE And for more on TENI see: @Teni_Tweets and HERE

A cab is like a confessional: passengers tell drivers things they wouldn't tell a priest. And now you can join a ride through Southport, from one dawn to the next, hearing what the cabbie hears, seeing what the cabbie sees. From candyfloss to clubbers, and businesswomen to bartenders, Southport is a place of contrasts. Its culture and character shifts with the sun. We hear from night-shift nurses and go behind the scenes at Beales. We discover how a fast food restaurant feeds a hungry town. We hear from tourists who return year by year. And then, when the sun sets and the shutters go down, we hear from clubbers and bartenders while the music throbs. This piece's creator, Joseph Rynhart, also looks into the history of Southport, from its Victorian pomp to its contemporary renewal. He talks to Jane Little-Smith, Community Development Officer at King's Gardens, about their re-development and symbiotic relationship with the town. And then meets Mark Catherall, dubbed Sefton Council's 'tourism boss' by the Southport Visiter, to hear about the tourist economy and efforts towards retail renaissance. Forget Delta, forget Uber: this is 24 Hours in Southport. Part of the Coastlands project: six documentaries about the Sefton coast. Created by Joseph Rynhart. Supported by Arts Council England and The Hemby Trust.
