October 1st, 1997 is known as END DAY. A great war encircles the globe and brings about an end to civilization. The surviving humans concluded that they could never repeat their mistakes and build a great tower in the sky to watch over the world and act accordingly to combat "evil". One hundred years have passed since then and a hidden cryogenic chamber in the mountains springs to life... It's our first Off-Topic episode of our 90s PC Game season, as well as our first game from the Every Wheel of this season. Whitebush has generously suggested to us Crystalis for the NES, and I think they're on to something! This is an action RPG that feels like Zelda meets Dragon Quest with a delightful little story and a wonderful use of color and art. It's such a good NES game, Matt even liked it! Editor Extraordinaire Ashton Ruby joins us to review what might be considered one of the first true action RPGs: Crystalis for the NES! In this episode, we travel forward in time to the year 2097 to defend humanity from terrible mutant monsters. It's our review of CRYSTALIS! There's absolutely no reason why I should like this game. It's a JRPG, and it has random encounters, tons of grinding, practically no story, and it'll kill you without blinking, and you won't have been able to save for at least the last hour. I should despise this game. But y'know what? I love it. I don't know what it is about the original Dragon Warrior that wets my whistle. Maybe it's just the heavy layer of nostalgia sauce. But whatever it is, it's a powerful drug. I adore this game. It's almost beautiful in it's simplicity, and while diehard modern day JRPG fans might find it a little bland for their tastes, I'll always prefer it to some of the fancier, deeper, funking role playing games of today. Making his return to the show this week is my buddy and fellow comedian, podcaster, and NES geek, the gentleman of RTG, David Rae, and we had a nice beefy chat about how boring this game is, and why (for the most part) it works really well. Minus losing half your gold when you die. Fuck that. And before we talk slime(s), I get into another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! This week, I give a few of my must play Game Pass picks to someone that's new to Xbox. We also sing the praises of the PlayStation 5 controller. And if I could instantly be a pro-level player of any game genre, what would it be? This is an episode about Crystalis...sort of...this week the Spindash hosts find themselves very distracted by midlife crisis purchases, arcade machines, Mark Zuckerberg, obscure movies, and random game lists. Yes, we do talk about Crystalis, but it always serves as a jumping point for some other wild tangent. This should not come as any shock to regular listeners. As requested by "Joe" on our Patreon, we're talking about SNK's action RPG, Crystalis, for the NES! This game combines RPG elements with a very Zelda-like gameplay, but does it work? And how well does it play now? We share our thoughts. Also discussed, games within games, games that just don't work for us, and Jeremy P finally doesn't really talk about Monster Hunter Rise- at least not too much. Want to get right to 2097? This week we added Crystalis to the Endless List. This inventive action RPG brought a new twist on the genre when it debuted in 1990. You take the role of a hero out of time who needs to save the world from the evil land of Draygonia. Where did the game land on our Endless List? We have learned from our mistake and we'll be moving onward and upward on future episodes.
Crystalis is, first and foremost, a pretty good game. There are fun details about its story, and why they still honor the American dollar, but mostly it serves as a good launching point for talking about the absurdities of NextDoor.

In the first episode of The Retro Breakdown, Dean and Tom discuss oft-overlooked SNK classic Crystalis, but disagree on how to pronounce it. How do we go from killing dragons to killing robots and computers? INSTANTAEOUSLY, APPARENTLY. Also, every gaming company has a Direct for marketing now, even Stadia, even though they had nothing to announce. Attempts to discuss the Ubisoft "Forward" were met with tangents on talking about literally anything else. There's a Lego NES set and it seems pretty dope, though. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/retrobreakdown/support
So it's halfway through our playthrough of The Last of Us: Part II, and how do we feel? Misguided optimism comes to mind. Michael asks if Grand Theft Auto Online is the best multiplayer game (spoilers, it aint) but we talk about what we want in a multiplayer game in general. Like, what would the perfect Soulslike game be? And if you want to go to our kickstarter for Soulsbound, too bad, you can't. Demon Souls, look out, Dark Souls is here. Speaking of threats, The Legend of Zelda is up against Crystalis and StarTropics, biding for Michael's attention between his days in seattle, and Adrian grieves on his experience's with Obsidian's Outer Worlds (and a little bit of joy with Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order). Originally released in 1990 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Crystalis was not a smash hit upon release. It was considered just another action rpg, another zelda-clone. But in the years that followed, it slowly developed a cult following, many of who now believe it to be one of the strongest titles that was ever released for the NES.Join Pat and James as they travel further back in time than ever before in their quest to separate the all time classics from titles that have aged like milk. Does Crystalis still have what it takes 30 years later or has modern game design left it in the dust?In order to answer this question, Pat and James dive deep on the following topics:Does Crystalis’ story hold up to the hype? Post-apocalyptic settings have evolved greatly since its release and videogame writing even moreso. Can a strong sense of progression fill the void of fun left by the simplistic and repetitive gameplay of the NES era?Grinding: The good, the bad and the extremely ugly. Just how much is too much?We discuss these topics, and many more, on the 30th episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast! If you enjoyed the episode then come and join us on our discord server! This week on Uncontained I am joined by vocalist, guitarist, audio engineer, and personal trainer Ari Mihalopoulos! Ari was one of my first interviews ever, back in 2004 when I was working at my old college radio station KBVU the Edge. He was promoting his band Destrophy's new album Crystalis. A lot has happened since then, Destrophy got signed to Victory records, he and his band mates became the backing band for the national touring metal band Otep for 9 years, and is still recording bands at his studio Inner Light Records. We talk about what the music industry is really like, some of the musicians he toured with including the late Peter Steele from Type O Negative, and get some great advice for musicians along with some physical fitness advice as well. To kick off the third, and possibly final Deep Space Wine session, the RTW crew is joined by two very special guests! The ebullient Mike Greenan, childhood friend of Sam/former boss of Kevin/former bullying victim of Jack and his gal pal, the warm and witty wine expert Kashmir Loveless! We’re cracking open several bottles of wine that have increasingly less to do with Star Trek as we settle in to discuss season seven’s Chrysalis! As the wine flows and spirits loosen, we also find ourselves cracking wise about Bashir’s do-ability, the best Adam Sandler movies, gangster Odie, Borgs, Porgs, NES classic Crystalis, the dangers of Franzia box wine, and so much more, culminating in the reading of a thrilling passage from a classic Star Trek book. Like Bashir and his buds, this podcast has been genetically engineered to provide maximum satisfaction.
Don't touch that dial! Because today we've got James Pelster, Alex Jedraszczak, and Joseph Martin here to bring GameCola back to its early days where childhood television shows often superseded videogame discussion. But don't worry, because we met in the middle and took a critical look at how videogames in TV have changed over the years. Check channel 3 below to see your local listings of discussion topics, including... - Joe gives us his thoughts on the newly released Mega Man: Fully Charged - Why are cartoons about videogames so bad? - Why are live action shows about videogames so bad? - Old GameCola staffers have been making some cool videogames - Director's Cuts, Deluxe Editions, and Extra Darkness - How many videogames could you buy with a million dollars? - How would we fix the canons of our favorite games? - Jeddy's translating Crystalis for The END DAY! - In times that are recent, what videogames have been played by us?

To celebrate another anniversary of The END DAY—the apocalypse of October 1, 1997, which I'm sure we all remember—GameCola staff members Alex "Zebu" Jedraszczak, Christian "Tornel" Porter, Vangie "Asina" Ridgaway, and Mike "Kensu" Ridgaway have taken on the personas of the four wise men (or "wise persons") of Crystalis for this, the first and longest installment of a D&D campaign that we swear was only supposed to run for one or two sessions. In this part, you'll hear... - A superb editing job by Alex "Zebu" "Jeddy," who makes me sound like I know many more words than "like" and "um." - Six minutes of uninterrupted exposition that will cause you to fall irrevocably in love with my voice. Or writhe in pain. - Deliberations over such crucial decisions as whether or not to order dessert. - SHOPPING! Which always takes forever. - An amazing impression of a drunk person that goes completely unappreciated by the group, probably because it starts sounding like that guy from Kung Pow around the 35-minute mark. - Putting out a fire...with a sword. - A battle with a dragonsnake and a turtlepod, whatever the heck those are. - The first signs that Kensu is going to have way too much fun with that polymorph spell. ...and much, much more! But you've probably already skipped ahead and are listening to the podcast right now.
